  • Jaguar unveils continuation E-Type vehicle

    Jaguar-Lightweight_thumbJaguar-Lightweight_651

The famous car maker Jaguar has unveiled the prototype of its continuation Lightweight E—Type vehicle, six of which will be built and sold.

Jaguar announced in May 2014 that it would create six continuation Lightweight E-Type vehicles, each built by Jaguar Heritage, part of Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Operations division. Each of the six cars will be built to the specification of the last Lightweight E-Type delivered in 1964 and will be hand-crafted at a new Heritage facility located at the spiritual home of the E-Type, Browns Lane in Coventry, England. The cars will be sold as competition vehicles and all will be suitable for FIA homologation for historic motorsport purposes.

These six cars are special – they are the “missing” six vehicles from the “Special GT E-Type” project, which originally started in February 1963 with the objective of building 18 cars. Only 12 of the aluminum-bodied Lightweight E-Type vehicles were eventually built and the remaining six designated chassis numbers have lain dormant, until now. The six new cars will carry these unused Lightweight E-Type chassis numbers. A race winner in the hands of a variety of famous drivers during its competitive career, the car achieved worldwide fame, and today, original examples are highly sought after.

The upcoming Lightweight E-Type will come with an aluminum body shell that reduces the car weight by 250 lbs (114 kg) versus the production steel bodywork. Although no modern materials and build methods will be used the new vehicles will have advanced technology applied to ensure the highest quality and most faithful rendition of the Lightweight E-Type. Using advanced scanning technology, the inner and outer surfaces of a Lightweight body shell were digitally mapped. The resulting detailed scan, which recorded dimensions and shape down to a fraction of a millimeter, was assessed to validate how the body was assembled in the 1960s. This also revealed how consistent the structure was side-to-side, and how it could be engineered today to produce the highest quality results.

There are 230 individual elements in the body of the continuation Lightweight E-Type. About 75 per cent of them are made in-house at Jaguar Land Rover but some of them are delivered by external partners of the company. The aluminum used is almost the same when compared to the material used for the first cars. The aluminum body will be completed with the addition of an aluminum hood, doors and trunk lid. An aluminum hard top is standard, just like in the original.

The new Lightweight E-Type will have an engine, based on the 3,868 cc (236 cu. in.) engine, which won Le Mans in 1957 in the D-Type. A similar cylinder head is used, but in place of the D-Type’s cast iron block, Jaguar introduced an aluminum block with steel liners for the Lightweight E-Type, which substantially reduced the amount of weight over the front wheels. A dry sump lubrication system reduces oil windage, maintains oil pressure during fast cornering and allows for higher oil capacity. The compression ratio is 10:1 and the car also comes with three 45 DCOE carburetors. This results in over 300 horsepower (221 kW) and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of torque at 4500 rpm. The power is transferred to the road via a lightweight, low inertia flywheel, a single-plate clutch, and a close-ratio, four-speed, fully-synchronized manual gearbox. The standard rear axle ratio is 3.31:1 and a variety of final drive ratios will be available. All Lightweight E-Type vehicles will be delivered with the Powr-Lok limited-slip differential.

The car will be built at the Jaguar Land Rover facility in Whitley, England where it is mated to its tubular engine sub-frame and then shipped to the JLR Gaydon facility for painting. It is then taken to Jaguar Heritage facility at Browns Lane where the car receives its’ powertrain, suspension, brakes, steering, electrical items, instrument panel and soft trim. This process takes place in a dedicated work area close to where the original Lightweight E-Type vehicles were assembled. No word on pricing and availability though.

  • Jaguar Land Rover to show three new models at 2014 Pebble Beach

    Jaguar-Range-Rover-Sport-SVR_thumbJaguar-Range-Rover-Sport-SVR_651

Jaguar Land Rover has announced three new product debuts that will happen at the Pebble Beach Automotive weekend – the company will present the new 550 horsepower (404 kW) Range Rover Sport SVR (global debut), the US version of the Jaguar F-TYPE Project 7 and the prototype of the new Jaguar Lightweight E-Type, of which just six cars will be built.

All three vehicles are from Jaguar Land Rover’s newly created Special Operations division which, under the leadership of Managing Director, John Edwards, will focus on designing and engineering high specification vehicles, bespoke commissions, heritage products and branded goods.

Perhaps, the most interesting model of the three is the F-TYPE Project 7, which is an all-aluminum, fully road-legal, two-seated roadster that features bespoke carbon-fiber aerodynamic aids. F-TYPE Project 7 is based on the 2014 Jaguar F-TYPE and features a Jaguar D-type inspired fairing, as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the iconic Jaguar D-type. The all-new Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe will also be on display at the Monterey Jet Center as part of the Petersen Automotive Museum’s World’s Greatest Sports Coupes Exhibit.

At Pebble Beach Jaguar Land Rover will also present its full model line-up including the high-performance Range Rover Sport SVR, the Range Rover Long-wheelbase and the Range Rover Evoque Autobiography Black. Some event guests will also have the chance to drive current model year lineups including the Range Rover Supercharged, the Range Rover Sport Supercharged and others.

  • Jaguar XE To Feature Lightweight Aluminum-Intensive Construction

Jaguar-XE-Preview-Infographic-THUMBJaguar XE is company’s upcoming premium sports sedan, which, as it was recently announced, will debut on 8th of September in London. Now, Jaguar is announcing that the car will also be built around aluminum-intensive construction. The new modular architecture was developed around the fifth-generation of bonded and riveted aluminum technology. This technology results not only in the lightweight of the car, but also delivers strength and rigidity to its body.

As a matter of fact the lightweight aluminum accounts for 75 percent of XE’s structure. This lightweight construction is one of the key elements in the design of Jaguar. For instance, around such are built the Jaguar XJ, XK and F-TYPE. They have all been developed with the utilization of the stiff bonded and riveted aluminum structures.

Another interesting fact around this technology is that it is aerospace-inspired. It is light and strong and has the capability of offering exceptional torsional stiffness. In addition, it will incorporate advanced suspension systems. What is more, the new XE model will sport world class driving dynamics – with supple ride and precise handling.

Jaguar XE will use new grade of high strength aluminum. It is named RC 5754 and includes high level of recycled material. This fact adds to Jaguar’s goal to use 75 percent recycled material by 2020. In addition, this aluminum also reduces energy consumption and lifecycle CO2.

  • 2015 Jaguar XE coming out in September

The 2015 Jaguar XE has been in the news for quite some time but until now no official release date has been mentioned. Well, we now know that the new vehicle will debut on September 8 this year.

In addition to the official release date Jaguar has treated fans and media-related people with some more details on the new car. The 2015 Jaguar XE will come out with an “aluminum-intensive architecture” that sports integral link rear suspension forged or hollow-cast from aluminum too. The construction is said to deliver “sharp response and handling while retaining a refined, luxurious ride”. The front suspension is a bit different though – it is based on the Jaguar F-Type with a double wishbone setup and XFR levels of stiffness thanks to changes in a few components. Jaguar again promises “agility and connected steering wheel” thanks to the integrated latest generation of electric power steering – a first for the company. The car will also come with “all surface progress control” that improves the Jaguar XE handling in difficult and slippery conditions.

As to engines the new Jaguar XE will offer a shiny new family of lightweight and turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. The so-called “Ingenium” line of engines that will be included in the new vehicle are some 80 kilograms lighter than the previous JLR units and will also include a 2.0-liter diesel engine. In addition the engines that will be used in the new XE line are built around 500cc cylinders, which means that Jaguar is likely to offer a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine as well as some more powerful 3.0-liter straight-six units.

There’s no word on the pricing of the new 2015 Jaguar XE but like we said the car will come out in less than two months time so we will have more information on the price by then for sure.
