  • First Details Revealed: 2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet

2013 Volkswagen Golf R CabrioletThe first exclusive details around the new 2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet has just been revealed. Based on a concept study, the new cabrio is the first-ever open-top R model and the fastest-ever production open-top Golf.

At its core is a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine which generates up to 265 hp (195 kW). It is mated to a standard six-speed DSG gearbox which transmits power to the front wheels. The new car has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, and it needs only 6.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.

Some of the prominent design cues here include a bespoke front bumper with gloss-black grille and ‘R’ logo, LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlights with black housings, gloss-black door mirror casings and black-painted brake callipers with R logo. In addition, the visual appearance of the car is completed thanks to the side sill extensions, a gloss black rear diffuser framed by chrome-tipped exhausts either side and smoked LED tail lights.

Furthermore, bespoke ‘R’ suspension lowers the ride by 25 mm. This Volkswagen runs on 18- or 19-inch ‘Talladega’ alloy wheels in either ‘Sterling Silver’ or optionally ‘High-gloss Black’.

In terms of interior, this Golf includes four individual sports seats in ‘Vienna Cool Leather’ and ‘R’ logos in the head restraints, while the leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, handbrake grip and gear lever all have contrasting grey stitching.

In the coupe can be also seen pedals with brushed aluminium caps, while the doors and dashboard include ‘Silver Lane’ aluminium decorative inlays. As a standard is included RCD 310 DAB radio with MDI (multi-device interface) and Bluetooth telephone connectivity.

Being a true Golf Cabriolet, this model is equipped with fully electric insulated hood. The latter is operated by a switch in the centre console, and can be lowered in 9.5 seconds at speeds of up to 18 mph (and raised in 11.0 seconds).

  • Volkswagen Beetle GSR Limited-Edition Unveiled in Chicago

Volkswagen-Beetle-GSR-Limited-Edition-THUMBVolkswagen Beetle GSR Limited-Edition was just unveiled at this year’s Chicago Auto Show paying tribute to the 40-year old sporty version of the classic Volkswagen Beetle. The original one was named GSR (Gelb Schwarzer Renner or “Yellow Black Racer”) and was based on a 1303S.

Of course it was immediately recognized because of its striking colour. However, only 3500 units were produced and this fact makes them now collectors’ items.

Now, at the Chicago Auto Show, Volkswagen pays homage to that 1970s’ model with the world debut of the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR Limited Edition. The new version retains the striking yellow and black theme, but also includes an the award-winning EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder TSI® engine that generates 210 horsepower (155 kW).

As the historic model, the new one has a yellow bodyshell, while the hood, trunklid, and bumpers were finished in matte black. The look is rounded out by black trim strips underneath the side windows and black rocker panels.

The new version of this Volkswagen however adds black exterior mirror caps, new yellow/black stripes with “GSR” lettering above the side skirts and a large rear spoiler, 19-inch “Tornado” aluminum-alloy wheels shod with 235/40 tires, black-painted brake calipers.

Furthermore, the GSR includes unique interior with black-trimmed leather sport seats and high-grip leather steering wheel with contrasting yellow stitching, R-Line dash pad, a GSR shift lever, a leather handbrake lever, and black floormats with contrasting yellow embroidery. A badge on the steering wheel is marked with the special-edition number (1 through 3500) to emphasize the uniqueness of the car.

As mentioned already, the new GSR generates up to 210 horsepower (155 kW) and has 207 pound-feet (280 Nm) of torque. This enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in only 6.6 seconds and to reach an electronically limited Vmax of 130 mph. The engine is matched to a six-speed manual transmission, but a dual-clutch DSG® six-speed automatic transmission will be an option.

As a matter of fact, the GSR is based on the Beetle Turbo with Sunroof and Sound model. This means that it includes a wide range of equipment: Fender® Premium Audio System; a panoramic sunroof; Keyless access with push-button start; Bi-Xenon headlights with LED DRLs; LED license-plate lighting; heatable front seats; Bluetooth® connectivity; a Media Device Interface (MDI) with iPod® cable; three-color ambient lighting; aluminum-alloy pedals; and three auxiliary instruments that include a clock with a stopwatch function and a boost gauge.

Just like its predecessor, the new limited-edition model will be produced in only 3500 units. 2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR will go on sale this autumn and its pricing will be announced closer to launch.

  • Volkswagen Snowareg – The Best Winter Vehicle

What is the best winter vehicle? Subaru, Mitsubishi or Audi Quattro? You may think so, but none of them can be even close to the ultimate winter vehicle – Volkswagen Snowareg. The Snowareg is produced for Volkswagen Sweden in 2011. It is based on the latest version of the big SUV. It features tank-like tracks that work “perfect” on all surfaces. In other words, it is suitable not only for going in deep snow, but on mud, grass, ice or tarmac. Still, we doubt  a little for the last one.The Snowareg has a mighty 4.2 liter V8 TDI with 340HP (250 kW) and 800Nm (590 lb-ft), which is just enough to pull almost everything out of deep snow-drift, except a real tank of course. 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and an average fuel consumption of just 9.1 liters per 100 km (25.8 mpg US) with CO2 emissions of 239 g/km.So the Snowareg is not only the best vehicle for winter conditions, but it is very “green” and suitable for everyday driving. Luckily, only test drivers will do that and the company won’t put it into series production.

Some of the special features included as an equipment here are the Climatronic automatic climate control, a winter pack (including heated front seats and windscreen washer jets), the RCD 310 radio, ParkPilot, the Light and Sight pack and the multifunction Plus display.

In addition, other standard features include high-comfort seats in the ‘Matrixline’ seat fabric and a central armrest. There is also added a multi-function leather steering wheel. Chrome rims on the air inlet grilles, an LED registration plate light, fog lights and tinted rear and side windows are also something worth the attention.

The engines can be mated to either a six or seven-speed DSG transmission. As an add-on there is also the LIFE Plus pack which improves the specification with extra features.
