The manufacturer is unveiling the 911 Cabriolet to a European audience right on cue for the open air season. The new model offers sporting drivers the option to enjoy the renowned dynamic qualities and iconic design of the 911 Coupe combined with the added versatility and driving pleasure offered by its folding convertible roof.

The roadster shares its new, high tech aluminium-steel body with the Coupe and extends this innovation to its all-new, unique hood. When raised, the design of the hood ensures the iconic 911 roof line is retained in its entirety. Intelligent lightweight design, including the use of magnesium in the hood frame, ensures reduced weight for increased responsiveness, lower fuel consumption and greater comfort. As is the case with the Coupe model, the new 911 Cabriolet is significantly lighter overall than its predecessor.

A tuned chassis boasting performance-oriented options is standard; with the air suspension at its normal level the Panamera GTS sits 10 mm lower than the other models in the Panamera range and its damping is designed to be tauter, reinforcing the sporting personality. Dynamic performance is further enhanced by the combination of 19-inch diameter Panamera Turbo wheels, 5 mm rear wheel spacers and larger brake discs from the Turbo – recognisable by their red brake callipers.

The appearance of the Panamera GTS is characterised by numerous black exterior styling details. The high-gloss black exterior package comprises the side window trim, the decorative trim on the rear lid, the headlight washer unit cover, the rear diffuser and the side air outlet panels which lend a particular sporting touch. In combination with the black side skirts, the tail end and the matt black tailpipes of the sports exhaust system the result is clear-cut and striking.

  • TechART and the New Porsche 911

TechArt-Porsche-Carrera-thumbLast week it was Vorsteiner who announced a Geneva Porsche Carrera and now we’ve got news from TechArt. They also have a program for the 911 but this one seems to be having a bad case of jaundice. Being that yellow, the car is certain to be noticed at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. It would be like staring into the sun. Just don’t squint your eyes too much or you won’t be able to see what’s new.

The TechArt 911 has a unique front bumper with an integrated splitter and two fins on the lower air intakes that probably don’t do much but they look cool. At the back, there seems to be too much downforce oriented features – a fixed rear spoiler, a rear wing, a diffuser? Other additions include the sideskirts, some new trim panels for the headlights and new mirror encasings.

Provided also are the TechArt Formula 5-spoke light alloy wheels in 20– and 21-inch sizes specially designed for the Carrera and Carrera S. Alternatively one can opt for the TechArt Formula III type of wheels which come in the same sizes. Either way, the 911 will be lighter and more dynamic when compared to a sibling with standard shoes. The five spokes on that particular Carrera are quite apart from each other and as a result we can see the callipers which are in what color?

All yellowishness aside, your hearing may also be provoked by the TechArt exhaust system that has remote valve control and dual oval pipes through which the car can sing its song.

The Carrera we have in our gallery will be at the show, but thankfully you can have the finish, inside and outside, custom made. Regardless of that, you get a lot of leather and Alcantra, carbon fiber, TechArt floor mats, TechArt steering wheel and paddle shifters. Let’s just hope, that there is some protective eyeware on the TechArt stand because my eyes are now hurting and I am not even close to the thing.

  • Where it All Started – BMW M1

BMW-M1-thumbThroughout the years, besides being utterly magnificent, M BMW cars have always been a statement. “I am the kind of person which has a an impressive annual income, a family, clout and an insatiable thirst for sideway buffoonery”. Whichever M car one might choose, the perks are always going to be the same – practicality and sensibility get you trough the mazes of society while sheer power and playfulness make for a great time at the countryside. Small wonder then, that today many well dressed men consider the M batch of BMW’s as a really, really good investment. But few people ask themselves, how and when did it all begin? Let’s just say, that the whole practical performance, 5-door saloonishness was definitely not the case at the beginning of the M odyssey. Enter the 1978 M1 – BMW’s first and only mid-engined road car.

    BMW M1 (1978-1981)
    BMW M1 (1978-1981)

Its birth hadn’t been easy. The company had to act quickly as, at the time, the Porsche 911 was becoming increasingly dominant in the field of motor sports. Believe it or not, BMW needed help. And that help came from Lamborghini. Sort of. The Italian company was assigned to do the design, engineering and production work. Without a doubt, that sounds like a recipe for success – BMW overseering the company that brought to the world the Lamborghini Miura and the Countasch. Probably one of the most talented designers ever, Giorgetto Giugiaro, sketched the lines of the M1 with a particular signature that can be seen in other works of his, such as the Lotus Esprit. Sadly, the times were tough, an oil crisis swept the world and Lamborghini went bust. That meant that BMW had to turn to someone else to finish the job. It was a painstaking process that consumed both time and money. The end result was an overpriced, plastic car of a thing that spawned only 455 times. On top of that, by the time everything was sorted out, most of the motor sport regulations moved on and the Bavarian was left trailing behind.

    Lotus Esprit S2 (1978-1981)
    Lotus Esprit S2 (1978-1981)

The real tragedy however, is that, for its time, the M1 was a really decent car. It had the looks, it had the quintessential supercar setup (2 seats, mid-engined, rear-wheel drive), it weighed like a super car (1400 kg) and it had a wonderful 3.5 liter straight six engine that developed 273 bhp. And it wasn’t some sort of an experiment power plant, but a proper one with a Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system and DOHC operating 24 valves in total. Later on the M635Csi and the first-generation M5 would get pretty much the same engine.

And that’s the thing about the M1. It died off quickly for a novel cause. Mercifully, the M badge stuck on, but now the BMW people were caught thinking – “Why don’t we shove such an engine in one of our own pefectly good saloons, beef up the brakes and suspensions and see what happens?” Today the results are evident. Almost every BMW car in the conteporary line up has an M counterpart which is hugely successful on the market and almost always highly valued by critics and automotive  journalists.

The performance and efficiency are even further improved through systems such as the Automatic Start/Stop function, engine and transmission thermal management, electrical system recuperation, the world’s first seven-speed manual transmission and the ability to ‘sail’ or coast. At last but not least the new electro-mechanical power steering offers the ultimate Porsche precision and helps to increase the efficiency and reduce the fuel consumption. • Awards of PORSCHE for 2011

It was a successful year for PORCSHE and it can prove it with the bunch of awards that it got!

The brand new Porsche 911 just has just “arrived” on the market and already has achieved a top motoring magazine award. With this award it adds a further one to the 2011 collection already awarded to the 911 GT3 RS 4.0, Cayman R and Boxster.

To start with the newest award, the new Porsche 911 has achieved the title Coupe of the Year 2011 by Top Gear magazine. In order to give the price, the well-known magazine has taken into consideration important data about the vehicle such as its price, its performance, its economy and its emissions.  As a world’s best sports car the new 911 model combines a powerful rear-mounted flat-six engine with the iconic 911 silhouette and adds more power and efficiency, less weight and a host of new technologies to improve more the sports car driving experience.

Next comes the award of the he iconic 911 GT3 RS 4.0. It was judged by EVO as Car of the Year. The reason to make this choice the selectors attribute to GT3 RS 4.0’s extraordinary and naturally aspirated engine. Another reason is that the 911 GT3 RS 4.0 brings together in a road car all the attributes that have made the Porsche 911 a regular winner on the race track. In addition it can produce the powerful 368 kW (500 hp), equivalent to 125 hp per litre. A further detail about the car is that it has a 4.0-litre engine, which is the largest and most powerful naturally aspirated engine ever featured in a 911!

The third award is given by Autocar and it is attributed to Porsche Cayman R. The latter one is declared as Britain’s Best Driver’s Car for 2011, after winning the yearly contest run by the magazine. In the run had taken part 11 of the year’s greatest new cars, and the aim was to figure out which one provides the greatest thrills for its driver. And without any hesitation Porsche Cayman R won it, delivering a pure satisfaction to the driver! With a weight of 1295 kg and its characteristic flat six 3.4-litre engine tuned to develop 243 kW (330 hp), the Cayman R is a representation of the lightweight, mid-engined sports car concept, and moreover it offers a precise and exciting driving experience.

The next award was also given to the Cayman R, which this time made a triumph as the ‘Best Sports Car 2011’ according to the opinion of CAR magazine. This time the comparison has been made between nine cars, and again the Porsche achieved the highest scores related to the tests made on road and track, and the responsiveness and chassis.

The last award goes to Porsche Boxer which was declared as the best among the “Used Sports Car of the Year”. The opinion is given by the professionals from What Car? Magazine, which states that over three-quarters of all Porsche sports cars ever built are still on the roads. Moreover in their opinion, if one wants to enter the world of Porsche then the perfect way probably is to get a pre-owned one. Of course for those who are willing to do so, there is The Porsche Approved program. It offers a wide choice of models in a variety of specifications to suit the personal taste, and in addition each is offered a two year warranty and the assurance of a thorough check-over by Porsche. What Car? Magazine commented that the mid-engined Porsche Boxster this great car can be accessible at not so great price. It is the perfect Used Sports Car because it combines fast drive with comfortability. With the super-stiff chassis Boxster remains rock solid with the roof down. On the other hand the 180 kW (245 hp) and the 2.7-litre engine, it brings joy and satisfaction to the driver!

  • Cars & Art Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

Cars & Art has introduced their tuned Porsche 997 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. The name of the project is “Pretty Boy” and you can see, why!

The mighty Porsche is completely foiled in matte-white colour, but it also features some nice light blue elements. The tuned Carrera stands on enormous 20” OZ Racing Ultraleggera HLT wheels finished in gold paint and fitted with performance Dunlop Sport Maxx GT tires. There are also front and tail covers and the GT3 spoiler.

The stance is unique thanks to H&R lowering suspension, which cut 35 mm of the ride height. Last, but not least, Cars & Art has installed a sports exhaust system with flap control.

    The Porsche 997 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S is powered by a 3.8 liter flat-six engine with 360PS (265 kW) at 6600RPM and 400Nm (295 lb-ft) at 4600RPM. The performance is brutal – from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 300 km/h (190 mph).

  • 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet

Great news for Porsche lovers: The new 911 Carrera Cabriolet with innovative folding roof makes a debut.

The latest convertible edition of 911 Carrera is on sale in March 2012. What’s new about this edition is that the new Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet offers sporting drivers the option to enjoy the renowned dynamic qualities and iconic design of the 911 Coupe combined with the added versatility and driving pleasure offered by its folding convertible roof.

The 911 Cabriolet has a high tech aluminium steel body with the Coupe, and the convertible extends this innovation to its all new, unique hood. This new Porsche offers an intelligent lightweight design, including the use of magnesium in the hood frame. It also ensures reduced weight for increased responsiveness, lower fuel consumption and greater comfort. The innovation here, and I am sure you’ll love it, is that the brand new Coupe model, is significantly lighter overall than it’s the former one.

And that is not all. The newbie 911 Cabriolet models have a longer wheelbase, wider front track and the new electro mechanical power. This of course is made to ensure the open-roofed models. The compact footprint on the other hand is accomplished by the shortening of the front and rear overhangs. Furthermore, there are additional standard or optional active control systems, for the overall improvement of the driving dynamics.

    2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet
    2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet

And for those who still like the classic look of the Porsche, I have to assure you that the new 911 Cabriolet models offer the same charismatic line-up of rear-mounted, flat-six engines as the Coupé equivalents of the benchmark sportscar. What is impressive is that the 911 Carrera Cabriolet features a 3.4-litre engine generating 350 hp (257 kW). With it the driving of the rear wheels are taken through a 7-speed manual transmission. More to come: you cannot underestimate the fact The Carrera S Cabriolet offers a 3.8-litre engine developing 400 hp (294 kW). It is also coupled to a 7-speed manual transmission as standard. Therefore the open-top 911 models share the characteristic efficiency for which the 911 is very well known!

And if you want to experience even lower fuel consumption and shorter acceleration time, the choice is only the new 911 Carrera Cabriolet (which for that sake offers the 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch transmission as an option).

The starting sale-date for the new 911 Carrera Cabriolet models is March 3 2012. But this goes only for the lucky people in the United Kingdom. There the 911 Carrera Cabriolet is priced from £79 947, and the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet – from £89 740.

All customers will have the opportunity to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone. And to make it even better Porsche has given a thought about the security of the automobile: fitted to every 911 Carrera Cabriolet is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), which is a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard.

  • dp Motorsport 1973 Porsche 911

1973 Porsche 911 is a stunningly beautiful car and what is more, it is fantastic to drive not only because it has magnificent engine, but it is super lightweight. Still, the dp Motorsport has “added” some additional equipment to the small Porsche or we should say “deleted”…

The rear-engined 911 is powered by a 3.6 litre flat-six with 310PS (228 kW). The car also comes with open air filters, a programmable advance curve double fuse combined with a G-50 Gearbox and limited slip differential are the decisive engine/transmission characteristics.

The tuned 911 also features a dp11 RS 2011 bodykit manufactured from carbon, including front bumper and hood, fenders, lightweight doors, rear fender flares, rear bumper and rear spoiler.

There are also green heated windscreen, a set of green-toned Plexiglas windows, as well as lightweight lamp lenses, were installed for the sake of weight saving. Reduced-weight tail light lamp holders, as well as air conditioner cover and underride protection from carbon, help chop the weight down to the desired figure. The carbon roof panel has been manufactured using the sandwich vacuum technique, and both hoods are equipped with quick release fasteners.

    dp Motorsport 1973 Porsche 911

dp Motorsport 911 stands on superwide 9J x 15” at the front and 13J x 15” Fuchs  alloy wheels fitted with 225/50-15 and 345/35-15 tires, respectively.

Apart from the dp coilovers, adjustable stabilizers, as well as head bearing, the spring plates and rear-axle independent arms with Uniball bushings are definitely worth a mention. A braking system originating from a 964 model and adjusted for the 911-G-Modell provides appropriate deceleration.

The interior boasts dp 935 bucket seats, the light carbon dashboard, a special knee bar set and the raised central tunnel catch the eye at first glance. In contrast to the body colour, the interior is dominated by black Alcantra. A welded safety cage, a varnished sports steering wheel with Porsche horn button, a lid instead of the clock and a carbon underbody are impossible to overlook. Finally, such specials are featured as a dp Clubsporttank with the capacity of 70 litres, a 25-amp gel battery starter, a smaller windshield cleaning liquid tank, light electric interior airing system, a middle oil cooler with front hood ventilation, as well as a brake cooling housing made of carbon.
