  • 2013 Hyundai i30 Three-Door to Debut in Paris

2013-Hyundai-i30-Three-Door-THUMB2013 Hyundai i30 Three-Door is set to debut at this year’s Paris Motor Show in the end of the month. The new generation i30 is the third member of the i30 family, which up until now consisted only of its siblings – the five-door hatchback and the Tourer.

What’s different here is that the three doors give this Hyundai more sporty styling. The exterior of course incorporating Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” and shows sharply-raked beltline, more angular glasshouse silhouette and longer front doors. All this gives more dynamic profile.

What’s new here is the black-finished mesh insert and central bar, which accentuate the hexagonal grille, now flanked by new, sportier fog lamp clusters consisting of the spots connected to LED daytime running light strips. The same design approach is continued in the clusters, and the front-end design is completed by a newly-profiled lower bumper.

At the rear, one can see an updated lower bumper area with new horizontal, sculpted fog lamps. They contrast the upright units of the five-door. These lights combined with the new black insert at the bottom of the bumper create the impression of a wider, sportier rear design. Exclusive 16-inch alloy wheels complete the visual appearance.

In addition to this the new i30 includes a wide range of standard equipment. The ride and handling were updated as well, and in addition to this the settings of the FLEX STEER system will help them change the steering assistance depending on their preference and prevailing conditions.

More importantly, the new generation i30 is offered with a choice of four engines and five power outputs, mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. At the top of the powertrain range is the ‘U-II’ 1.6-litre diesel engine, generating 128 hp (94 kW).

2013 Hyundai i30 Three-Door will be officially unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show on 27th of September.

  • Hyundai Elantra Coupe: Good for Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse

Hyundai-Elantra-Zombie-Survival-thumbComic-con is happening right now in San Diego and people are not the only ones who indulge in cospaly (short for costume play). Here’s a Hyundai Elantra Coupe which stems from one of the world’s favorite apocalyptic scenarios – how to protect ourselves in times of a zombie attack?

Robert Kirkman, who designed this “Zombie Survival Machine” Elantra might have the answer. He also happens to be the creator/writer of the popular franchise “The Walking Dead”… which, much to our relief, is about zombies. No need to know that however, as that front plow with spikes on it is obviously not for clearing up snow from the streets (those can be found at the nuclear winter scenario booth). Nope, this one is for dicing your way through hoards of slow-walking, brain hungry ghouls. As a good measure, the glassy bits of the car are also barred and there’s a hatch on the roof in case of emergency. Powerful floodlights at the front and back are good for your awareness and rather road illegal but let’s face it, how many oncoming cars will be blinded by the light in a zombie ridden Atalanta, Georgia. At the back, the trunk is supposedly full of various “electric and pneumatic weaponry”. The tires are a classic with those knee-choppers sticking out of them and inside you get a CB radio system. All of that and more can be found at HyundaiUndead.com and on Sktbound.com.

    Hyundai Elantra Zombie Survival
    Hyundai Elantra Zombie Survival

Being a Hyundai Elantra Coupe, the Zombie Survival Machine boasts 148 zhp (that’s zombie horsepower) from it’s 1.8-liter engine mated to a six-speed … say automatic because changing shifts and fending off clinging zombies is demanding work. On paper, it should an Elantra coupe does around 34 mpg on the combined cycle. Nor sure about this particular one though.

Another more generic looking Elantra GT also shares the spotlight as it has the cover of the 100th Walking Dead comic as its paint job. That’s the whole point of the Hyundai Undead line: To celebrate the release of the 100th issue of “The Walking Dead” comic. There will be a VIP Black Carpet Event on July 13 to mark the occasion.

  • 2013 Hyundai i30 Tourer Production Begins

2013-Hyundai-i30-Tourer-thumb2013 Hyundai i30 Tourer is going to join the i30 family as its production has already started. This Hyundai model will keep the characteristics which have made its hatchback sibling a great deal of success.

Not only will bring the Tourer the great quality, value, stylish design, efficiency and driving enjoyment, but also it will add greater load-carrying capability to the i30’s package.

The launch of the Tourer is the next phase of the New Generation i30’s introduction. The aim of Hyundai is to bring about more choice for their consumers. In addition the importance of quality and in terms of design, engineering and manufacturing will be retained.

The Tourer will come with a load capacity of 528-litres with the rear seats raised and 1,642-litres when the seats are folded. This means that the new i30 Tourer will add further practicality to the everyday life of its customers.

The design of the car was of course inspired by the new design philosophy of the company, and is in total coherence with Hyundai’s fluidic sculpture form language.

In addition it is important to highlight that the i30 has already achieved five-star rating from Euro NCAP in the organisation’s test programme. Here are included 90% score in the ‘child occupant’ assessment, with maximum points in the ‘18-month-old’ and ‘3-year-old’ tests.

Pricing and specification will be revealed shortly before launch.

  • 2013 Hyundai Equus

2013-Hyundai-Equus-thumbHyundai‘s flagship, executive battle cruiser is born again for the year 2013. Hyundai Equus – the biggest, most powerful, safest and most equipped car, the company has ever made. There will be two trim levels (Signature and Ultimate) but no matter how you look at it, both of them are bundled with mind-boggling technology and it’s hard to tell them apart.

Both will unconditionally get the bulky 5.0-liter Tau DOHC V8 that sends 429 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque through a Hyundai-developed 8-speed automatic gearbox. That power then is transferred to the rear wheels which is a big thing for Hyundai. Because of the Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing and the high-pressure direct injection system, the economy is good…ish as well – 15 mph city, 23 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined.

Weight distribution is said to be 52:48 and thanks to a Continuous (lots of continuity with the Equus) Damping Control unit, and road surface can be tackled with the exact level of stiffness and rigidity. Then there’s the Vehicle Stability Management which controls a full bag of features (the ESC, the electronic parking brake and the smart cruise control) thus keeping you out of the ditch. Don’t think however, that the Hyundai Equus engineers went easy on the occupant safety tech. Not even slightly. You get dual airbags at the front, side airbags for both the front and the back as well as curtain ones on the length of the roof and a driver’s knee airbag. The seat belts strap on tightly when the Equus senses an imminent collision while the headrests ensure your head is where it should be – on your shoulders. A camera on the front grille (Ultimate) monitors for objects when parking and sends the data to an LCD monitor inside. The bootlid camera at the back comes as standard.

    Hyundai Equus (2013)
    Hyundai Equus (2013)

As for luxuries, the Signature lists more than 40 features. Among them, there’s a 608-watt Lexicon 7.1 Discrete surround-sound audio system with 17 speakers, a massaging driver seat, a lane departure system, a set of 19-inch chromed alloy wheels and a Navigation system with DIS and multimedia controller.

The Ultimate actually looses an occupant space at the back but the remaining two get individual reclining and massaging seats, tinted rear windows an entertainment system for the back and….a refrigerator. This one is obviously for the more bossy type of people. The ones that plan to spend a great portion of their time being driven around rather than driving themselves. But then again, the concept behind the Equus is just that – being executive…at an affordable price (which is still undisclosed).

  • 2013 Hyundai Veloster Starting from $17,450

Hyundai-Veloster-Turbo-thumbThe massively popular Hyundai Veloster hits the US showrooms with a 2013 model year that’s pretty well priced – $17,450 for the 1.6 GDI, 6-speed manual. The one we are interested though, is the Veloster Turbo which has the same engine, but well… twin-scroll turbocharged. The prices for it start at $21,950 (6-speed stick) but what you get in return is a real treat – 201 hp, 195 lb-ft. of torque, 38 mpg of highway consumption, sporty looks, sporty notes and sporty equipment.

The 1.6L engine is swift in response, frugal and decently powerful thanks to it’s twin-scroll turbo technology and direct injection. Couple it with the 6-Speed SHIFTRONIC Automatic transmission and you’ll get the top of the line Veloster at the price of just $22, 950 – $1000 more than the manual.

The front grille is bigger, more pronounced and more hexagonal? LED’s and fog lights make sure the front has a premium luxury feel. The side skirts and the rear diffuser integrated rear bumper result in a more road-hugging stance when compared to the base Veloster. The exhaust pipes are now two round ones instead of a single trapezoidal module and all the while, 18-inch wheels with chrome inserts complete the looks.

Inside, you get “Turbo” embroiled on the headrests. The gauge cluster is quite 21st century with it’s two TFT displays between the dials, the pedals are from aluminum and the starter is a button. The only non-sporty thing are the standard heated seats – an unnecessary luxury which can only add weight.

  • 2013 Hyundai Elantra debuts as Langdong in China

2013-Hyundai-Elantra-Langdong-THUMB2013 Hyundai Elantra has been exclusively unveiled for the Chinese marks at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show. The new Hyundai model is exclusively designed for China and includes differentiated design and improved features.

  • Gemballa’s Diamond Finish: Sparkle, Sparkle

Gemballa-Diamond-Coating-thumbGemballa which are known for this and this, have now taken up a somewhat bonkers project. As far as we know, the first of April was a long time ago but, lo and behold, it’s the “world’s first diamond coating for the interior and exterior finish of vehicles”. So there you go. Now you can have soulless Hyundai look like a backstage prop from the Wizzard of Oz. And yes, we are talking about actual diamonds:

“When GEMBALLA speaks of diamonds, we really mean it”, explains CEO Andreas Schwarz. “Our complex process uses genuine diamonds as its key ingredient – not metal pigments, glass fragments, or crystals.”

We are dumbfounded in the search of what one might gain from that. As an argument, Gemballa suggest that diamonds have the strongest light refraction properties which in layman terms means sparkly. Very sparkly. We hate to think what happens when the car form the oncoming traffic bathes you in high-beams. Also, you wouldn’t want to leave your diamond-coated car in front of the grocer’s, would you? Of course not, shopping at the grocer’s is for mortals. A private helicopter supplies you with organic caviar from Spain.

Gemballa continue on saying that the diamond is one of the hardest naturally occurring substances known to man which is a comforting thought. Knowing that my interior is now seasoned with thousands of pieces of diamond, I would love to scrape off my face on them should an accident occur.

The tuners are confident that that is the right finish for their already carbon fiber abundant cars. We, on the other hand, are not.

  • 2013 Hyundai Sonata Tackles Other from its Segment

2013-Hyundai-Sonata-thumbDon’t you hate it when car manufacturers bash one another over which one is the leader in a segment? That’s exactly what Hyundai are now doing with their 2013 Sonata. We had to go trough bulks of comparisons between their car (the 2013 MY) and 2012 MY Altimas and Accords, Malibus and Fusions to actually get to some relevant information. Whichever table we looked at, the Sonata was one step ahead… but is that really the case?

It is cheap, we’ll give them that. At $21,720 you get a Sonata GLS complete with the “Popular Equipment Package”. That roughly means front heated seats and fog lights among other luxuries. Power comes from a Theta II GDI 2.4-liter unit which, judging by the acronym, one might think it’s a diesel. The thing is GDI stands for Gasoline Direct-Injection and that’s what the Sonata uses to spray fuel into the cylinders at pressure of 2,175 psi. Thus the compression ration stands at a high 11.3:1 and the pistons inside are dished so that they can handle the combustion process more efficiently. With all that in mind, we are being told that the Sonata achieves 24 mpg in an urban environment and 35 mpg on the highway. The transmission that comes as standard is a six-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC and has to deal with 198 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The SE trim also boasts a standard dual exhaust system which adds 2 more hp and 2 more lb.-ft. of torque.

While the 2.4 Theta II GDI is naturally aspirated, the 2.0-liter one is turbocharged. That means even more power and almost no compromises in terms of efficiency – 274 hp at 6000 rpm and 269 lb-ft of torque within the 1,750 – 4,500 rpm range.

On the Hyundai Sonata 2.0T SE trim you get a fully automatic temperature control unit which is convenient. What isn’t convenient, but rather exciting, is the sporty suspension – stiffer springs and larger stabilizer bars, resulting in a 20 percent increase in roll resistance. Add to that 18-inch, low profile tires and a constantly adapting electric power steering and you’ve got yourself a car that does not shy away from a corner.

Driver aids include the usual ABS and ESP systems but also Electronic Brake-force Distribution – depending on the place of load, braking power gets redirected. Six airbags and active front-seat head restrains keep you safe and sound.

It goes without saying, that inside, the connectivity is topnotch – XM Satellite Radio for three months, Bluetooth, a place to plug in your iPod or USB drive and a touch-screen navigation system that comes with the SE and Limited trim levels.

Overall, the Hyundai Sonata sounds like a decent car. The only thing the company needs to do is to stop jabbing the others and gain and focus on their product. The automotive industry should not tolerate dirty play.

Moreover, the 1.2-litre petrol i20 is now available in Style trim.

The Blue Variant of the i20 is powered by Hyundai’s ultra-efficient 1.1-litre “U-ll” three-cylinder diesel engine. The latter is combined with Intelligent Stop and Go and low rolling resistance tyres emits a mere 84g/km.
