  • Ford Ranger Raptors

    2020 Ford Ranger Raptors1

Christmas has come early for the animals at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, which has taken delivery of two Ford Ranger Raptors.

The tiger-liveried Raptors are being put to good use across the UK’s largest zoo, tasked with feeding some of its 3,500 animals, many of which are Endangered or Extinct in the wild.

Duties for the Raptors include helping keepers transport food, bedding and feeding or activity toys around across the 600-acre nature haven. The other vehicle is currently spreading Christmas joy as a stand-in for Santa’s sleigh, entertaining visitors who returned on 2nd December after a second enforced closure due to COVID-19. More than one million people visit Whipsnade and London Zoo combined each year.

Ford is also loaning ZSL London Zoo a congestion charge and low emission zone-exempt Transit Custom plug-in Hybrid in the new year to assist with inner-city logistics and transporting goods to and from each site.

Owen Craft, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Chief Operating Officer, said: ““As an international conservation charity this year has been challenging for us. We have keenly felt the pressures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we and our sister site ZSL London Zoo, were forced to close for a total of 16 weeks each, putting us under huge financial strain and impacting our global conservation efforts. We are grateful to Ford for this loan, which is helping our keepers to care for some of the worlds most endangered animals.”

The Ranger Raptor’s Quickclear windscreen will prove useful for the early morning starts, while the heated seats will help to keep keepers warm during winter.

Mike Laird, Ranger Product Manager, Ford of Europe, said: “The Ranger Raptor is a workhorse, but on this occasion it’s working alongside the horses. These visually striking pick-up trucks will become as much of a visitor attraction as the animals themselves, not least because Ranger Raptors stay still for photos!”

Raptor is built to withstand high-impact, off-road events, thanks to its unique, super-strong reinforced chassis frame, which uses high-strength, low-alloy steels to endure the high-performance off-road driving. FOX shock absorbers with Position Sensitive Damping provide higher damping forces for unparalleled off-road capability. Its 1,560 by 1,575mm load tray has been designed with the weekend explorer in mind, able to carry dirt bikes or jet-skis, but will happily accommodate hay bales, too.

ZSL’s keepers will also be able to choose from six Terrain Management System modes to tackle a wide range of terrain and driving scenarios, including:

    • Normal mode – emphasising comfort, fuel economy and driveability

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee two-row and its 4xe electrified version are scheduled to start production at the Mack Assembly Plant later in 2021.

    Jeep legendary 4×4 capability
The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L delivers improved unrivalled capability along with composed on-road driving dynamics. Legendary off-road capability begins courtesy of three 4×4 systems – Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with rear electronic limited slip-differential (eLSD). All three systems are equipped with an active transfer case to improve traction by moving torque to work with the wheel with the most grip.

Quadra-Trac I is a single-speed active transfer case that uses input from multiple sensors in the vehicle to pre-emptively adjust torque distribution and will continue to reactively make corrections if tyre slip occurs. When wheel slippage is detected, as much as 100 percent of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction.

The Quadra-Trac II’s two-speed active transfer case with low-range gear reduction uses input from multiple sensors in the vehicle to pre-emptively adjust torque distribution and will continue to reactively make corrections if tyre slip occurs. When wheel slippage is detected, as much as 100 percent of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction. Active 4-Low torque control with 2.72:1 gear ratio improves off-road manoeuvrability and delivers uncompromised performance.

Quadra-Drive II, with a two-speed active transfer case and rear eLSD, delivers industry-leading tractive capability. The system instantly detects tyre slip and smoothly reacts distributing engine torque to tyres with traction. In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and pre-emptively adjust in order to limit or eliminate tyre slip. Quadra-Drive II is available on the Overland 4×4 model when equipped with the Off-Road Group and is standard on Summit models.

    Quadra-Lift
The class-exclusive Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension, now with electronic adaptive damping, delivers class-leading ground clearance and water fording. The system automatically adjusts the shock tuning to changing road conditions for enhanced comfort, stability and control.

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L’s Quadra-Lift system operates automatically, or may be controlled manually with console controls, and features five height settings for optimum ride performance:

    • Normal Ride Height (NRH): 212mm of clearance offers improved fuel economy, as well as improved aerodynamics during on-road driving
    • Off-road 1: Lifts the vehicle an additional 40mm from NRH for added height in clearing obstacles
    • Off-road 2: Delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability and provides an additional 60mm (nine percent more range than previous generation) from NRH for increased, best-in-class ground clearance of 276.8mm and up to 609mm of water fording depth (improvement of 101mm over previous generation)
    • Park Mode: Lowers 46mm from NRH for easy ingress/egress, which levels down the vehicle twice as fast over the previous generation. NRH and Park Mode are driver selectable, giving the driver full control over vehicle ride height. Air suspension improvements include a dual tank design to enable more controlled and quicker functionality
    • Aero Mode: Lowers the vehicle 21mm from NRH. Aero Mode is controlled by vehicle speed and adjusts for optimal performance and fuel economy. The vehicle will also lower to Aero Mode when in Sport Mode

Quadra-Lift adds up to 106mm of lift span supported by four-corner air springs that provide an air cushioned, premium ride. The crawl ratio on the Grand Cherokee L is 44:1.

With the available Quadra-Lift air suspension, the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L features a 30.1 degree approach angle, a 23.6 degree departure angle and 22.6 degree breakover angle.

    Selec-Terrain
The 2021 Grand Cherokee L’s class-leading Selec–Terrain traction management system lets customers choose the on and off-road setting for optimum 4×4 performance. This feature electronically coordinates up to six different powertrains, 4×4 torque split, braking and handling, steering and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case and traction control, stability control, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and steering feel.

The Selec-Terrain system offers five available terrain modes (Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud/Sand) to provide optimised calibrations for any given driving scenario.

Hill-Descent Control allows drivers to control Grand Cherokee L’s speed down steep, rugged grades with electronic paddle shifters standard on all models, without the need for throttle or brake pedals. Hill-descent Control is standard on Overland and Summit models and works both in forward and reverse.

When equipped with the available Off-Road Group, the Trail Rated Overland 4×4 model benefits from class-leading traction, ground clearance, manoeuvrability, articulation and improved water fording. The Off-Road Group also includes high-strength steel skid plates, electronic limited slip differential rear axle, 18-inch aluminium wheels and rugged, all-season performance tyres.

All-new architecture delivers world-class driving dynamics and durability
The all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L receives a multitude of improvements to optimise ride, handling and quiet sound, while also reducing weight and improving fuel economy. A new unibody design along with three available 4×4 systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II), an available Quadra-Lift air suspension and standard Selec-Terrain traction management system improve on the Grand Cherokee’s legendary 4×4 capability.

The use of lightweight, high-strength aluminium closures, including the bonnet and boot, help reduce weight and boost fuel economy. The Jeep engineering team reduced weight by mounting the axle directly to the engine, along with a solid-mounted aluminium front cradle, aluminium engine mounts and steering gear, a magnesium cross-car beam, aluminium shock towers and an all-new electronic master brake booster system. To help meet weight, impact and to improve durability, the Grand Cherokee L body structure employs the latest grades of Generation 3 steel. The next-generation steel gave engineering and design teams the ability to cold stamp complex parts from higher strength materials, which was not possible in the past, creating a more robust and innovative body structure.

Jeep engineers put substantial emphasis on designing a body structure that is both strong and lightweight, balanced yet functional. To achieve this, Grand Cherokee L is composed of more than 60 percent advanced high-strength steel to aid in ductility, usability and energy absorption.

Jeep Grand Cherokee is widely known for its outstanding on-road driving dynamics and quietness, thanks in part to its front and rear independent suspension. For 2021, Grand Cherokee L employs a newly located front virtual ball joint to improve lateral control and a multi-link rear suspension that enables improvement in ride comfort and routine handling. An enhanced engine box with a shock-to-shock tower brace improves local lateral stiffness by 125 percent. A new variable-rate air spring suspension continuously adjusts stiffness to loading conditions to further compliment the vehicle’s legendary off-road capability. Premium manners are enhanced with approximately 6,500 welds in the body alone.

The Grand Cherokee L’s air suspension system boasts several enhancements to deliver a smooth, comfortable ride both on and off-road:

    • The closed loop air suspension system reuses clean air, resulting in improved compressor durability
    • To quickly change vehicle ride height, the Quick Down Levelling (QDL) feature uses an external valve block and secondary air reservoir, which allows for both axles to lower simultaneously compared with single axle lowering in previous generations. QDL enables faster easy entry setting from normal height
    • Electrically controlled, semi-active shocks on Grand Cherokee models equipped with air suspension continuously adjust to road conditions and driving styles to create the optimum ride comfort for all driving situations

For the first time ever on Grand Cherokee, the front axle is bolted directly to the engine to allow for better management of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and superior driving dynamics thanks in part to its lower centre of gravity. New active/electronic engine mounts absorb more vibration and movement when at idle, but stiffen at higher speeds to optimise ride glide. This is a new feature available on Grand Cherokee and offers a new level of comfort, versatility and performance. An enhanced active noise cancellation system, along with a double-dash body, door seals and acoustic glass round out the enhancements that bring NVH and wind noise down to a whisper.

Grand Cherokee’s electric power steering (EPS) has been carefully calibrated to deliver a superior driving feel and consume less energy. The electric motor works with an adaptive engine control unit (ECU) to monitor steering speed, steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This allows for varying levels of steering assistance to be applied, for example, when more is needed at low speeds, such as manoeuvring through a parking lot, or less when at highway speeds, to enhance overall driver confidence. The EPS system uses a variable-rate ratio to improve manoeuvrability while maintaining on-centre stability in all driving conditions.

    Award-winning powertrains
The all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers buyers a choice of two powerful, fuel-efficient and refined engines with proven performance for any driving situation.

Standard is the all-aluminium 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine, with 290hp and 348Nm of torque. Lauded for its power and refinement, the 60-degree angle between the Pentastar V6’s cylinder banks make it inherently smooth running, augmented by accessories that bolt directly to the engine block. The Pentastar V6 engine is compact, with features such as exhaust manifolds integrated into the cylinder heads.

Chain-driven dual overhead camshafts include two-step variable valve lift and variable-valve timing (VVT). This combination quickly tailors engine output to the demands of the driver for the best balance of performance and fuel economy.

Fuel-saving engine start-stop (ESS) technology is standard on the Pentastar V6. The ESS system has been upgraded and refined for the Grand Cherokee L. Changes include a pressure reserve element in the eight-speed transmission, which provides dedicated transmission fluid to the shift elements at engine restart for a quick launch. Refined powertrain controls and new starter technology minimise early engine restarts from minor movements of the driver’s foot on the brake pedal. Restart noise, vibration and harshness have been reduced via revised controls and switchable engine mounts.

The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine is rated for a towing capacity of up to 2,812kg and an estimated class-leading driving range of nearly 500 miles.

VVT with dual-independent cam phasing enables better fuel efficiency across a wide torque band in the Pentastar V6. Nearly 90 percent of the engine’s peak torque is available from 1,800 to 6,400 rpm – an important consideration when towing.

Buyers who want more power can opt for the award-winning 5.7-litre V8, with 357hp and 528Nm torque delivered over a broad power band and has a class-leading towing capacity of up to 3,265kg

The V8, with a foundation of a cast-iron block and aluminium cylinder heads, delivers performance and efficiency with VVT and Fuel Saver Technology (cylinder deactivation). With Fuel Saver Technology, the engine control computer turns off fuel and spark and closes the valves to four of the engine’s cylinders during light-load operation, such as highway cruising, when full power is not needed. The system immediately re-engages the deactivated cylinders when the driver presses on the accelerator pedal. The system is active in an expanded region with respect to the previous generations and is unnoticeable to the driver. Depending on the driving scenario, cylinder shutoff can increase fuel economy from five to 20 percent.

Fuel economy is further enhanced with VVT technology that reduces the engine’s pumping work by closing the intake valve later and by increasing the expansion process of the combustion event. This allows more energy to be transferred to the wheels instead of being lost out of the exhaust as heat. VVT also improves engine breathing, which improves engine efficiency and power.

Each engine mates to the durable, robust TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, which enhances fuel economy and delivers crisp and smooth gear changes. The widespread of gear ratios helps keep the engine rpm in the ideal range for the task. On-the-fly shift-map changing enables the transmission to quickly adjust its shift strategy to match the driver’s demands based on inputs, such as engine torque changes, hill detection, temperature and longitudinal and lateral acceleration.

New for the 2021 Grand Cherokee L 4×4 is front axle disconnect. If the vehicle senses that road conditions do not require all-wheel drive, the front axle disconnect automatically and places the Grand Cherokee L in two-wheel drive, reducing drag on the driveline and improving fuel economy. Four-wheel drive automatically re-engages when the vehicle senses it is needed.

    Design: Unparalleled refinement, uncompromising craftsmanship
    Exterior
From the moment Jeep introduced the Grand Cherokee in 1992, it presented the world something it had never seen before and set a new industry benchmark as it quickly became synonymous with upscale design and uncompromised capability. Fast forward decades later, the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L continues to build on its proud legacy, while raising the bar in luxury and performance.

“The Jeep design team envisioned a modern aesthetic for the all-new 2021 Grand Cherokee L – they worked to sculpt it down and gave it a clean and updated premium appearance tailored for today’s customer,” said Mark Allen, head of Jeep exterior design. “The design for the first-ever three-row Grand Cherokee pays respect to its heritage and honours its utilitarian roots. The results reflect its premium characteristics, contemporary style and legendary capability that has defined the Grand Cherokee since its inception.”

The proportion of the all-new Grand Cherokee L was inspired by the original Wagoneer, Jeep’s first full-size luxury SUV. Grand Cherokee L’s lean profile features a longer bonnet and cab, which shifts the vehicle rearward to give a sense of motion with a ready to react response. A forward-tipped grille further enhances the length of the bonnet and gives a respectful nod to Wagoneer’s iconic design. A lowered, tapered roof improves aerodynamic performance and efficiency without sacrificing its cargo spaciousness and utility.

Most notably transformed is the face of the Grand Cherokee L. All-new slim LED headlights are the primary focal point and accentuate the technical character of the vehicle. The signature seven-slot grille has been updated to be wider with larger individual openings and is outlined in elegant trim that underscores its advanced lighting and emphasises the width of the vehicle. Below the grille, the new front fascia is proportionally larger than previous generations, designed for function while keeping the competitive approach angle for which the Grand Cherokee is known. Its geometric shape conveys purpose while adding a slight formality to the overall front theme. The larger opening with textural elements conceals a long-range radar and other advanced technology features, including active grille shutters, to help improve on-road performance and efficiency.

From the side, a lowered beltline and expansive glass allow for a more spacious cabin and increased visibility. The roofline appears to float courtesy of a new window moulding design that begins at the base of the side mirror and travels continuously to the rear quarter window and to the base of the back light. This trim treatment stands out even more when selecting the Gloss Black roof, which is available for the first time on Overland models and comes as standard on Summit models. A new roof rack design consists of a singular side rail cap to create a seamless appearance. Body cladding and bright work have been kept to a minimum to align with the vehicle’s modern tailored aesthetic.

A widened track (36mm increase) gives the Grand Cherokee L’s stance a quiet confidence. The wheel flares are pulled tautly around the tyres to strengthen the Grand Cherokee L’s stature. The tyres are flush with the body side to showcase signature trapezoidal wheel arches and, for the first time on a Grand Cherokee, 21-inch wheels come standard with the Summit Reserve Package.

Continuing with its modern theme, the rear of the vehicle is tailored, and the lowered beltline contributes to the expansive rear window. Sleek, high-set LEDrear lights are designed to visually distribute the rear proportions and reinforce the technical aspect of the vehicle. A unique character line directly below the rear lights provides a visual break and carries around to the side of the vehicle to unite the rear and body side in a harmonious way. A new rear fascia and LED fog lamps are underscored by accent trim that corresponds with the front and provides visual width to the rear.

New vertical-pillar spoilers added to the tailgate help reduce on-road drag. A rear-view camera with washer has been tucked neatly into the tailgate spoiler, which also features a new LED centre high-mounted stop lamp. Other rear elements, including a standard integrated tow hitch cover and fascia-mounted exhaust tips, provide a finished, custom look. Overland and Summit models come as standard with a hands-free, foot-activated power tailgate.

For the first time, a premium, full suite of LED lighting is standard on all Jeep Grand Cherokee trim levels, which allowed for design flexibility and helped to shape the identity of the vehicle.

Ultra slim headlamps with unique signature lighting set into Gloss Black bezels, along with slim horizontal fog lamps, express the serious nature of the front end and allow the Grand Cherokee L to be instantly recognisable both during the day and at night.

In the rear, ultra slim rear lights with unique lit signatures complete the lighting story. Additional elements include approach-lit door handles and puddle lighting projected from the rear-view mirror, which are standard on the Overland and Summit models.

    Interior
When it came to the interior design of 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, the team’s objective was to create one of the most exquisite and technically advanced interiors in the industry. The next-generation interior evolves to create a more refined expression, featuring handcrafted materials with an attention to detail and modern amenities that pair seamlessly with its new lean and tailored exterior.

“The objective for the interior design team was to create a unique statement for 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. We viewed the overall design process through a wide lens that allowed us to use a new generation of Jeep interiors,” said Chris Benjamin, head of Jeep, Chrysler and advanced interior design. “While the Jeep Grand Cherokee interior has been synonymous with sophistication, our approach to the three-row version was to showcase distinguished details, handcrafted materials and modern amenities that pair seamlessly with its tailored exterior.”

Immediately upon entry, the driver and front passenger will notice how the Grand Cherokee L’s new layout adds dimension and symmetry. The instrument panel has been proportioned and angled to create spaciousness that is celebrated through an expressive contrast of warm authentic materials and sleek modern technologies.

Harmonious surface language is conveyed by a sculpted, horizontal applique that runs the entire length of the front panel. Focus is drawn to a structural metal trim that stretches the length of the panel and sweeps upward to offset new slim HVAC vents. The sleek trim frames the sculpted natural wood accent, which is offered in open-pore Absolute Oak on Summit and open-pore Waxed Walnut on the Summit Reserve Package. The layering of the wood, leather and metal materials emphasises the horizontal theme and surrounds passengers with a visual masterpiece.

The rich mix of materials are contrasted by the sophisticated execution of the centre stack, which has been realigned and is now even more accessible to the driver. A bright, structural element neatly frames the next-generation, 10.1-inch display for the new Uconnect 5 system. Also new is a 10.25-inch frameless digital gauge cluster with nearly two dozen different menus from which the user can select, including driver-assist technologies such as adaptive cruise control, highway assist, night vision, drowsy driver detection and speed limit traffic signs display (if equipped). To control the digital cluster, the Grand Cherokee L features an all-new multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters. Summit models come as standard with a leather-wrapped Absolute Oak steering wheel, and the Summit Reserve Package adds Waxed Walnut wood accents.

The console has been reimagined and now boasts an all-new layout featuring a glossy Piano Black finish. The centre console is highlighted by an all-new drive control centre with a backlit, metal rotary shifter that delivers haptic feedback when engaged. To emphasise its authentic Jeep character, the gear lever is flanked by the ride height and Selec-Terrain switches. New streamlined cup holders allow for more space and storage in the front bin, which can hold two wireless devices and features an optional wireless charger that can charge two devices simultaneously.

An all-new Jeep seating architecture has been introduced on the Grand Cherokee L, featuring a length-adjustable cushion for the front row in Overland and Summit models, which is an FCA first. First-row seats with power 16-way adjustable position with memory and lumbar are available on Overland and standard on Summit. Seat back massage, that includes five customisable profiles with three levels of pressure intensity, is available on Overland and standard on Summit models. Heated seats in the first two rows, with three-level configurable controls for personalised passenger comfort, are standard on Limited models and above. Ventilated front-row seats are available on Limited and standard on Overland and Summit models. Ventilated seats in the second row come standard on the Summit Reserve Package.

In the rear cabin of Summit models, standard captain’s chairs flank a new second-row console that provides generous storage and cup holders. The console was designed similarly to the front console, while sculpted for functionality and uncompromised leg and foot room for third-row occupants. For all models, the rear cabin features soft armrests colour-keyed to the leather seats, additional storage and cup holders, plus a class-leading 12 USB Type A and Type C ports for wireless devices.

A full suite of all-new customisable interior LED lighting with daytime/night-time settings is now standard on all models. True ambient lighting with a five-colour selection, an FCA first, casts an inviting glow along the entire instrument panel, as well as the front and rear doors. This feature is standard on the Overland and Summit models for a personalised sensory experience.

Passenger comfort is elevated in Summit models with four-zone automatic temperature control, which has the capability to select different fan levels and modes for individual passengers in the first and second rows. The system also offers four different temperature settings. For the first time in an FCA vehicle, the second and third-row vents, now wider and slimmer, are placed in the pillars, as opposed to overhead, to better target passenger comfort zones without compromising headroom or visibility.

Grand Cherokee L introduces a new premium package, Summit Reserve, that sets the benchmark for luxury in the full-size SUV segment. Premium hand-wrapped, quilted Palermo leather, ventilated front and second-row seats, memory and massage front seats and choice of a new Tupelo interior color add distinguishable details to the model. Also unique to the Summit Reserve Package is genuine open-pore Waxed Walnut wood and premium, wrapped, suede-like fabric on the A-pillars and headliner.

Available first in the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, FCA is currently the only automotive manufacturer in the world to carry a McIntosh audio sound system. The premium McIntosh audio system is available on Overland and Summit models and comes standard with the Summit Reserve Package. The advanced, high-performance audio system features a 17-channel amplifier with a maximum output of 950 watts and 19 speakers, including a 10-inch subwoofer, to envelope vehicle occupants in high-definition sound. The shared vision between FCA and McIntosh design teams resulted in a Jeep audio system with the same level of authenticity and design quality found on McIntosh home audio products. The system accentuates the updated and premium feel of the vehicle’s new interior design. Metal accents on Piano Black surfaces, illuminated branding and McIntosh’s signature blue-glowing power meter further exemplify the modern touches of luxury within the cabin’s interior.

Overland and Summit models include the CommandView dual-pane sunroof with a power sunshade (optionally available on Limited). The Laredo model features an available single-pane sunroof.

    New levels of dimensionality
Designed to maximise overall passenger comfort, the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L delivers unsurpassed third-row capacity and increased cargo volume. The vehicle’s 3,091mm wheelbase creates generous interior room and offers passengers class-leading legroom in the second row.

For improved vehicle access, Grand Cherokee L features larger second-row door openings than previous generations. They open 64 degrees with an ingress/egress exterior side step.

Inside, premium seating includes room for six or seven passengers. The second row comes with standard “tip and slide” bucket seats (optional bench), 180mm of fore/aft travel and an available power-folding third row. Second-row bucket seats can be easily moved to create expansive passage to the third row. Child safety seats installed in the second row do not have to be removed to access the third row. Designed with passenger comfort in mind, the spacious third row provides 947mm of head room.

For added driver comfort and convenience, a driver footrest and integrated side-door storage bin for a wireless device come standard on all models. To make passengers more comfortable, the second-row seats recline 18 degrees.

Grand Cherokee L delivers increased rear cargo volume behind the second row (1,328 litres). The third-row seat features a 50/50 split and is easily folded from the rear of the vehicle. For even more utility, both the second and third-row seats fold forward into a flat-load floor. When the second and third-row seats are folded flat, the maximum cargo space is 2,395 litres.

The design of Grand Cherokee L allows increased visibility compared with previous generations, delivering best-in-class side-window visibility for all seating rows. Noticeable improvements were made to address and minimise side and rear-view pillar obscuration’s (visibility improvement of seven degrees). The use of expansive glass allows for a more spacious cabin and also contributes to greater visibility.

The Grand Cherokee L is the first FCA vehicle to feature an electronic remote release in the rear cargo area to quickly and effortlessly fold the second row flat (standard captain’s chairs and optional bench). The feature is standard on Overland and Summit.

A programmable height feature that allows the boot opening to be set at a chosen degree is standard on Limited, Overland and Summit models and available on Laredo. Overland and Summit models come as standard with a hands-free, foot-activated power tailgate.

Most advanced, high-tech safety and security features in its class
The all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers more than 110 safety and security features, including innovative technologies that refine the connection between driver, vehicle and the road.

    Segment-leading innovation
The Grand Cherokee L arrives with a class-leading suite of features that deliver on the promise of driving confidence, for which the Jeep brand is renowned. These features enhance a driver’s field of vision, help make instrumentation easier to see and enable driver-assist capabilities that accommodate collision avoidance.

Active Driving Assist is FCA’s name for Level 2 (L2) automated driving capability and the technology affirms the company’s march toward an autonomous future. The Grand Cherokee L is available with Active Driving Assist for hands-on-wheel and eyes-on-road automated driving, using lane-centering with adaptive cruise control. The system uses multiple sensors, including radars and cameras to dictate appropriate roads for the technology. Active Driving Assist is available on Overland and is standard on Summit models.

Hands-free Active Driving Assist is FCA’s name for hands-free L2 assisted driving and will be available in late 2021 for 2022 model-year Grand Cherokee L Overland and Summit models. It offers hands-free driving at all speeds and lane centering on approved roadways for even greater driving convenience. The system also will predictively slow the vehicle down in tight curves and automatically resume control after the driver overrides and verifies that he or she is paying attention to the road.

Night Vision Camera, available on Overland and Summit models, uses thermographic technology to augment the reach of the Grand Cherokee L’s headlights. Infrared sensors search for the heat signatures of pedestrians and animals in the road ahead, at distances up to 200m. When located, an alert with their positions relative to the vehicle are outlined in the instrument cluster directly in front of the driver.

Ergonomics are a key benefit of the available, full-colour Head-up Display (HUD). Available on Overland and Summit models, the system provides the driver with up to five different information elements, including Active Lane Management, adaptive cruise control, turn-by-turn navigation, current speed, current gear and speed limit.

Intersection Collision Assist helps detect vehicles approaching from the driver’s left and right when nearing a crossroad. Four radar sensors and one camera determine if a collision appears imminent, prompting the system to provide audible and visual alerts. If the driver does not respond, the system automatically activates the vehicle’s brakes. The feature is standard on Summit models.

Drowsy Driver Detection tracks vehicle movement, such as lane deviation, and interaction, such as steering-wheel input over time, for driving behaviour consistent with that of a drowsy driver. When certain thresholds are reached, the system responds with audio and/or visual cautions for the driver to pull over. The feature comes standard on Summit models.

The Digital Rear-view Camera system, optional on Limited models and above, replaces the conventional rear-view mirror with a 9.2-inch-wide Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) that shows real-time video from a rear-facing camera. Unlike a conventional rear-view mirror, the new digital camera system offers a view that is unobstructed by the D-pillars or rear seats. When not in use as a display, the screen reverts back to a reflective mirror.

Traffic Sign Recognition, standard on Summit models, uses a forward-facing camera to identify speed limit and related traffic signs, such as those denoting school and construction zones.

An additional safety and security feature on Grand Cherokee L is Surround View Camera. Available on Limited and Overland, standard on Summit models, the system offers 360-degree, bird’s-eye views of the vehicle and its surroundings, enhanced by dynamic gridlines displayed on a 10.1-inch digital touchscreen. With front and rear lens washers, the system is enhanced by ParkSense front park assist, which helps the driver orient the vehicle.

Equipment levels on the Summit model are elevated even further with standard Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist, which uses ultrasonic sensors to guide the driver into parking spaces. Manufacturing: Proudly built in the Motor City
The all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is built at the new Detroit Assembly Complex – Mack Plant, the city’s first new manufacturing facility in nearly three decades. FCA invested $1.6 billion to build a 790,000-square-foot paint shop and to convert the two original Mack Avenue engine plants into an entirely new assembly site. The investment also added 3,850 new jobs to support production of the first ever three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as the new two-row version and future electrified models. The plant is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2021.

    Intricate route to superior quality
It’s one thing to reimagine the world’s most-awarded SUV on paper; it’s quite another to ensure it looks and performs the way it should on (and off) the road.

To launch the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, FCA engineers leveraged decades of intellectual capital and allowed themselves to be guided by the adventurous spirit of Jeep customers.

“There’s a reason Jeep customers are so demanding,” says Mark Champine, head of quality, FCA – North America. “They’ve grown accustomed to going wherever they want, whenever they want, with a spirit that’s unique to Jeep. It’s our job to deliver on those expectations.”

    Gap and flush
While the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee L leads its competitors by a wide gap, FCA is laser focused – literally – on minimising gaps. The newly constructed Detroit Assembly Complex – Mack, which is home to the Grand Cherokee L, features a measurement cell that combines laser light with radar to check body-panel geometry. Every vehicle built at the new site passes through this cell, which helps ensure fit and finish that is precise and uniform.

Previously employed by FCA in a body-shop application, the cell at Detroit Assembly Complex – Mack marks the first application of “gap and flush” technology at the end of a production line. The technology affords greater repeatability and accuracy than conventional camera-based measuring systems. As a result, the distinctive silhouette of each and every Grand Cherokee L mirrors the thoughtful vision of Jeep designers.

    More Chalma
FCA’s new manufacturing site also boasts a track where specially trained workers conduct confirmatory testing for high-priority attributes, such as cabin-quiet. But the 2021 Grand Cherokee L’s road to superior quality actually started inside a microprocessor and wound its way to Detroit from central Mexico, via FCA’s proving grounds in nearby Chelsea, Michigan.

Usage data was collected from owners of previous-generation Grand Cherokee vehicles. Once analysed, the direction was clear: To further boost body/chassis durability, another key customer demand, FCA engineers called for “more Chalma.”

The name honours a route just south of Mexico City that was once so rugged as to be nearly impassable. Recreated in unforgiving concrete at FCA’s Chelsea Proving Grounds, “Chalma Road” is pocked with potholes, killer cobblestones and two kinds of treacherous trenches – diagonal and transverse.

The Grand Cherokee L’s design benefits from 1,000 hours of tortuous testing on this hostile highway. Which is only fitting, Champine says, because “the only things tougher than Jeep brand vehicles are their owners.”

Establishedlegacy of luxurious, capable Jeep SUVs
Built on 80 years of legendary heritage, every Jeep has a remarkable lineage and unique personality. Each is authentic with class-leading capability and versatility. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is no exception. The initial debut of the Grand Cherokee set a new industry benchmark for luxury and capability and ushered in four celebrated generations that would lead to it becoming the most awarded SUV in history.

First and second-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ/WJ): 1993-2004
The Jeep Grand Cherokee made its infamous debut by crashing through the convention centre glass at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 7 January, 1992. The first SUV equipped with a driver-side air bag, it set new standards for on-road ride, handling and comfort in an SUV. The 2,690mm-wheelbase Grand Cherokee took refinement to a new level. A new Quadra-Coil suspension featured a coil/multilink configuration. A 5.2-litre V8 engine was offered as an option and a Dana 44 rear axle was available for some models.

Third-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK): 2005-2010
A complete redesign of the ZJ/WJ, the all-new Grand Cherokee combined power, luxury and a significantly quieter, more comfortable ride. Jeep engineers worked hard to improve on-road refinement by adding a short/long-arm independent front suspension. The ground-up transformation continued with a choice of three power plants, including the mighty 330hp 5.7-litre HEMI® V8 engine. The 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 featured a 6.1-litre HEMI V8 with 420hp and 569Nm, 20-inch lightweight forged wheels and four-piston Brembo brakes. The available full-time Quadra-Drive II 4×4 system featured front and rear limited slip differentials and a centre differential-lock that operated in low-range.

    Fourth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2): 2011-present
All-new for 2011 and more than 4 million sales after the introduction of the first Grand Cherokee, Jeep improved the formula to deliver the perfect blend of on-road refinement and off-road capability, with improved fuel economy, a world-class interior, a sleek new exterior design and a host of safety and technology features. A Trailhawk model was introduced in 2017 with standard Quadra-Lift air suspension, the Quadra-Drive II 4×4 system, all-terrain tyres and a Skid Plate Package. The new Trackhawk was released as the quickest and most powerful SUV ever. It boasted a supercharged 6.2-litre HEMI V8 engine, modified engine cooling, high-performance Brembo brake system and Launch mode for an incredible track performance.

Introducing the very latest on-board technology and an even more cosseting cabin, the new Bentayga is significantly revised both inside and out from the previous generation.

Subtle exterior badging complements the new Bentayga’s exterior design now prevalent across the entire model range, giving Bentley the freshest and most modern product family of any luxury car company.

Chairman and Chief Executive of Bentley Motors, Adrian Hallmark, comments:

“The Bentayga Hybrid is the next step on our journey to becoming the world’s leading sustainable luxury mobility company. Bentley will transform from a 100-year-old luxury car company to a new, sustainable, wholly ethical role model for luxury, and the Bentayga Hybrid is the first model to pioneer our company’s recently announced Beyond100 strategy.”

Bentley’s research shows over 90 per cent of customers use their first-generation Bentayga Hybrid on a daily basis or several times a week, and nearly 100 per cent of customers use EV mode, with half of them consistently undertaking journeys of less than 30 miles.

During previous retailer training, 78 per cent zero emissions journeys were achieved regularly over a 500 mile activity. In a more urban environment, one of Bentley’s development drivers achieved 67 per cent zero emissions over 672 miles around San Francisco, and in the UK, Chris Cole – Project Leader for the Bentayga Hybrid achieved 64 per cent zero emissions commuting to and from the factory.

In real world terms, the majority of journeys can be achieved completely in electric only, with zero emissions, delivering more benefits environmentally and building on Bentley’s new reputation for sustainability for the future.

Hybrid Powertrain Drives Further Technological Advancements

The Bentayga Hybrid’s electrified powertrain consists of 12 main components in three key areas. Firstly the distribution of electricity; the charge point is located on the left-hand side of the car, opposite the fuel flap and is specific to the region of the vehicle. An LED provides a visual indicator showing the state of charge of the battery, which can be charged at a rate of 7.2kW/h.

The 17.3 kWh lithium battery consist of 168 individual cells with an expected life of 100,000 miles or eight years, and can be charged to 100 per cent in as little as two and a half hours (region specific). The power electronics convert the energy stored from the high voltage battery to supply the E Motor or supplement the existing 12v vehicles electrical infrastructure.

Conversion of stored energy into smooth, effortless performance is via the 94 kW (126 bhp) E Motor which can produce up to 258 lb.ft (350 Nm) of torque. The E Motor is housed within the transmission between the gearbox and internal combustion engine and can deliver full torque instantaneously from stationary, providing silent and rapid vehicle acceleration.

A 3.0 litre twin turbocharged V6 engine supplements the E Motor when additional torque is required or when speeds above 84 mph are requested. To warn pedestrians of the vehicle’s near silent movement, a dedicated speaker emits an exterior sound at low speeds.

The Bentayga Hybrid not only has different drive modes but can also use the information stored via the Bentley Hybrid Efficiency Navigation system to achieve the very best efficiency, via feedback through the throttle pedal.

The Bentley Hybrid Efficiency Accelerator Pedal provides a pressure point when in EV Drive to denote the boundary between pure electric and hybrid power. This encourages the driver to stay in EV Drive for as long as possible but can also be disabled if required.

Bentley Hybrid Efficiency Braking blends seamless integration of braking between the E Motor and conventional hydraulic braking, to provide a conventional feel to the brake pedal for comfort and the driving experience while maximising recuperation of energy.

A dedicated button allows control over the three E Modes – EV Drive, Hybrid Mode and Hold Mode. These will enable the driver to manually manage battery usage during a journey – though this can also be managed automatically by the car.

EV Drive mode is engaged as soon as the car is switched on, and maximises the electric driving experience. This is ideal for city driving and for shorter journeys. The Bentley Hybrid Efficiency Accelerator Pedal provides feedback to the driver using a pressure point to denote the boundary between pure electric and hybrid power. Using predictive data from the Bentley Hybrid Efficiency Navigation database, the pedal will vibrate when approaching a junction or speed limit decrease, advising the driver to lift off the throttle, saving energy whilst also giving the maximum opportunity for regeneration. Haptic feedback through the throttle pedal of the transition between the E Motor disengaging and the internal combustion engine starting encourages the driver to stay in EV Drive for as long as possible, maximising efficiency. In pure electric drive, the E Motor continues to function up to speeds of up to 84mph.

Hybrid Mode maximises vehicle efficiency and range using data from the intelligent navigation system. This mode is suited for longer journeys and uses predictive E-Mode and engine coasting whilst following directions from the navigation system. Inputting a destination, the car will automatically engage the correct Drive Mode for each part of the journey, constantly calculating the most efficient use of battery charge and storing electrical energy for sections of the journey where it is most useful – such as when arriving in the city. The system will reduce on-board charge to zero just as the vehicle reaches its destination, maximising overall efficiency.

Hold Mode balances engine and electric power to hold high voltage battery charge for later use. This is the default mode when in Sport is to provide consistent boost and recuperation.

The new Bentayga Hybrid is delivered with all of the required market specific cables, facilitating charging of the vehicle at the home or via industrial charge points at work or in public car parks. In addition to the standard equipment supplied customers can also choose a Bentley branded wallbox available as a no cost option* providing an attractive solution housing the charge unit and neatly storing the charge cables.

The latest release of the My Bentley in-car and remote connected car services are available through the new Bentayga Hybrid. In-car services are now delivered through an embedded SIM, meaning they no longer require a data connection from a customer’s mobile device.

Remote services – subject to regional availability – are accessible through the My Bentley app and are further improved, including the technology levels and range of features. Four specific features for the new Bentayga Hybrid can be found in the convenient features and are as follows:

MY CAR STATISTICS – which provides an overview of vehicle data. You can view the time and date of recent trips as well as last trip distance, average speed, travel time and average fuel/electric consumption.

MY BATTERY CHARGE – allows you to remotely initiate vehicle charging as long as your vehicle is plugged in. You can select the time you plan to leave and the charging system will calculate a rate of charging to achieve the highest level of charge in line with your departure.

MY CABIN COMFORT – lets you remotely heat or cool the cabin to an optimum temperature of 22°C ahead of your journey.

E-CHARGING – identifies the nearest charging point locations in the area or at a destination of your choice, allowing you to navigate to the most convenient location. You can filter the results by distance, bay availability and charging rate.

Bentley Research Proves Effectiveness of Bentayga Hybrid

As part of Bentley’s journey towards electrification and the recently announced Beyond100 strategy (delivering a product range composed entirely of plug-in hybrids or battery electric vehicles by 2026), a research activity has been undertaken to understand customer usage of the Bentayga Hybrid in detail.

Over 90 per cent of customers use their first generation Bentayga Hybrid on a daily basis or several times a week and nearly 100 per cent of customers use EV mode, with half of them consistently undertaking journeys of less than 30 miles.

In real world terms, this means that the majority of the journeys, whether office commuting or school runs, can be achieved predominantly whilst producing zero emissions.

    New Bentayga Hybrid – Summary

The new Bentayga Hybrid builds upon the latest design and feature content offered by the newest iteration of the Bentayga product line.

Bentayga Adopts Bentleys New Design Language

The exterior design of the new Bentayga range has been completely refreshed from the previous generation to create an even more stylish and purposeful car. Every panel at the front and rear of the car has been altered to give it a cleaner and more modern look.

JP Gregory, Head of Exterior Design at Bentley Motors, comments:

“We spent a long time examining how to improve the proportions and character of the car. New Bentayga is still instantly recognisable as a Bentley but now has a much greater road presence, a more self-confident looking SUV from whatever angle you look at the car. The prouder grill and higher, more focused elliptical headlights give a much more modern expression.”

At the front, a larger and more upright new matrix grille allows the Bentayga’s elegant bonnet to sweep down to the very edge of the chrome work. This gives the car a more dominant, upright profile and pushes the new elliptical LED matrix headlamps further apart, raising them 30 mm higher leading to a more muscular aesthetic. The new headlamps also include the marque’s now-signature cut crystal design, which makes them appear to sparkle even when not lit.

Perhaps the most dramatic design changes have been reserved for the rear of the car, where the new Bentayga range is radically different from its predecessor. In line with the Continental GT, it features elliptical tail lamps for the first time.

The lights feature within an all-new, full-width tailgate, resulting in a cleaner, more contemporary look. The licence plate has moved down into the bumper, allowing for prominent Bentley lettering above.

The dynamic new looks are further accentuated with a breadth of individualisation possibilities, including the contemporary urban appeal of the Blackline Specification that replaces all exterior chrome with black versions.

    Craftsmanship Redesigned

The Bentayga’s fine handcrafted cabin has been reimagined for the new model. Already universally acclaimed as the benchmark for luxury SUV interiors, new Bentayga Hybrid now contains a modernised, unparalleled combination of luxury materials and exquisite, intricate craftsmanship.

Bentley designers have created an even more relaxing environment for passengers, wherever they travel. Among the major changes to Bentayga’s more contemporary interior are new door trims and steering wheel, plus a redesigned centre fascia and digital instrumentation cluster. These are complemented by new seats that further improve on the industry-recognised benchmark for seat comfort.

Two versatile seating configurations are available in the new Bentayga Hybrid. The standard five-seat benefits from an all-new seat frame, doubling the travel of the rear-seat recline angle, and the optional four-seat layout features two individual rear seats separated by a centre console.

The ergonomics of the four-seat configuration are further enhanced from a 30 mm increase in knee room in the upright seated position, with an improvement of almost 100 mm in the reclined position, helping to make luxury travel even more comfortable.

A new quilting design is included in Mulliner Driving Specification cars, while customers can choose from eight sustainably-sourced veneers including two straight grained options new to Bentayga – Koa and Crown Cut Walnut.

Information At The Press Of A Button

The new Bentayga range now has a fully digital driver’s information panel similar to the Continental GT and new Flying Spur. The display brings a contemporary look to the cockpit, can be customised to the driver’s requirements and features real-time lighting effects with elegant animations.

The standard Bentayga tachometer that displays engine speed is replaced with a dial showing when the car is operating in pure EV Drive, or engine speed if the combustion engine is operating for the Hybrid version. A battery status dial replaces the coolant temperature gauge.

Setting new standards in the sector for customer technology interfaces, the new Bentayga introduced a new, cutting-edge infotainment system. A bigger and brighter, high-resolution 10.9-inch touchscreen, with an anti-reflection and anti-glare coating and much improved touch functionality, now spans the entire width of the centre fascia for a more contemporary look.

The infotainment screen can display energy flow in each of the three E Modes, showing whether the vehicle is being powered by energy supplied by the battery, or the combustion engine – or whether energy is flowing back to the battery in order to charge it.

The Bentley Hybrid Efficiency Navigation system features free text, context-specific search entry, including an address or point of interest. Navigation is improved with a three-dimensional building display, satellite maps, content in the driver’s next generation Head-Up Display and several other useful features. The Head-Up Display can now project traffic information, street names and distance to destination too.

As well as the usual array of media sources, wireless Apple CarPlay is now standard in the new Bentayga range (in addition to the previous standard wired system), along with Android Auto for the first time in a Bentley. With a corresponding phone plugged in to one of the car’s USB-C sockets, the central infotainment screen mirrors the smartphone display.

  • Kia Stinger

State-of-the art technology with concert hall quality premium audio system

The upgraded Stinger is fitted as standard with Kia’s 10.25-inch touchscreen display. The infotainment system also allows Bluetooth smartphone pairing for two phones concurrently, enabling separate phones to be used for phone calls and music, for instance. Its advanced split-screen display lets users control or monitor different vehicle features at the same time, customising the screen with a series of different widgets. Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ are standard, with intuitive voice control for many of the car’s features, such as heating and ventilation, audio and navigation. A wireless charger allows smartphones to be topped up without wires trapsing across the cabin.

The standard touchscreen navigation system has full European mapping and a Traffic Messaging Channel. Stinger also has Kia Connected Services with TomTom™ and UVO Connect, giving access to traffic, speed camera and weather information plus local search details in a number of categories, from the location of Kia dealerships to nearby restaurants.

A concert hall quality 15-speaker harman/Kardon® premium system with subwoofer, external amplifier and front centre speaker is featured as standard on the latest Stinger. It features Clari-Fi, which restores the sound often lost when digital music files are heavily compressed, and QuantumLogic Surround Sound, which redistributes signals from the original recording to deliver multi-dimensional playback.

The upgraded model includes a high-resolution 7.0-inch digital display within the instrument cluster. This full-colour display with vivid graphics for different driving modes delivers crystal-clear information to the driver between the speedometer and tachometer. It is also fitted with a customisable head-up display, which projects driving information onto the base of the windscreen in the driver’s line of sight. The system shows alerts from the car’s numerous driver assistance technologies, details of vehicle speed, and turn-by-turn navigation instructions.

The new Stinger adds features such as a ‘connected car’ Remote Engine Start system, which allows owners to start their car remotely using the Stinger’s smart key. A 360-degree surround view camera system is fitted, as well as front and rear parking sensors, giving the driver a bird’s eye view when manoeuvring in tight spaces. A smart key with button start is standard, and a Smart Power Tailgate takes the effort out of opening and closing the boot when your arms are full with shopping.

Safety systems are enhanced for 2021

The upgraded Kia Stinger carries over the same Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that it offered previously, as well as a series of new features and updates to provide even better protection for the driver, their passengers and other road users.

The latest cutting-edge safety technology has been added to the new Stinger, including a new Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) that acts as a ‘second pair of eyes’ for drivers by eliminating a driver’s left- and right-side blind spots. It displays a high-resolution video feed within the instrument cluster’s digital display if the driver indicates to change lane with another vehicle in their blind spot. The video feed comes from discreet wide-angle lenses hidden beneath the door mirror housings, giving drivers a wider viewing angle of their blind spots.

Lane Following Assist (LFA) helps the vehicle stay in the centre of its lane, while Highway Driving Assist (HDA) maintains a set distance from the vehicle in front on a motorway or A-road, and also keeps the car in the centre of its lane, even on a curved road.

Safe Exit Warning (SEW) detects vehicles coming up from behind on either side of the Stinger when parked and stopped, alerting occupants with a sound and visual warning if they attempt to open the door into oncoming traffic. Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) provides a warning to the driver if they leave behind any pets or children when they exit the car.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) now offers protection when turning across the road into a junction by identifying oncoming traffic on the other side of the road. Furthermore, it offers increased activation range when detecting a vehicle, pedestrian or cyclist. The Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) is now able to detect the edge of a road, as well as the lines in the road, providing steering assistance to prevent the driver leaving their lane without signalling. Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) provides an enhancement over the existing Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW). Instead of simply warning drivers of cars in adjacent lanes, BCA helps drivers avoid a potential collision by applying differential braking.

Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA) is a new feature for the latest Stinger, with system based on traffic sign recognition. Driver Attention Warning (DAW) now has an increased operating speed of up to 130mph, and also alerts drivers if they fail to notice the car in front move off from a stop. The navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) helps drive around curved sections of a motorway or A-road, automatically reducing the vehicle’s speed to an appropriate level before entering the curve. It reverts to the original speed as the vehicle leaves the curve and returns to a straight road.

The Rear Cross-Traffic-Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) has been upgraded and now helps to prevent collisions with crossing vehicles while reversing by taking emergency action, whereas previously the system only warned the driver with a sound.

Stinger range focused on one halo ‘GT S’ edition

There is just one, high-specification version of the Stinger in the UK, powered by the tremendous 3.3-litre V6 T-GDi twin-turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine. Drive is sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The 3.3-litre, 3,342cc twin-turbo V6 T-GDi is a member of the Lambda II range of engines and produces 361bhp at 6,000rpm and a huge 510Nm of torque starting at 1,300rpm and continuing uninterrupted until 4,500rpm.

The twin-turbo V6 makes Stinger the fastest-accelerating Kia ever. From standstill to 60mph takes just 4.7 seconds, and the top speed is 167mph where permitted. • Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo SV

    2021-Jaguar-Vision-Gran-Turismo-SV1

A maximum speed of 255mph, an aerodynamic design honed to perfection and race-winning powertrain technology define the Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo SV – the latest all-electric virtual race car developed for Gran Turismo, and built in the real-world as full-scale design study.

The Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupé – the first all-electric Jaguar sports car created for the globally-renowned Gran Turismo series revealed in October 2019 – has already proved highly successful, attracting gamers with its radical, heritage-inspired design, driver-focused interior, and outstanding ride and handling.

Yet to the team from Jaguar Design, SV and Jaguar Racing, the Vision GT Coupé represented only the starting point for development of the Vision GT SV. It was an opportunity to re-evaluate everything that could improve performance and in doing so, re-think what an electric Jaguar endurance race car could be.

Fundamental to that process was detailed analysis of gamer feedback from online videos and forums. This ‘virtual world testing’ combined with many hours ‘behind the wheel’ enabled the design and engineering teams to determine exactly how to optimise the Vision GT SV to create the perfect electric gaming endurance race car.

Julian Thomson, Design Director, Jaguar, said: “Jaguars created for the race track and the road have always shared the same DNA – whether that’s the D-type and XKSS, or the I-PACE and the I-TYPE. So, when the design team behind the Vision GT Coupé were asked to create the ultimate electric gaming endurance racer for Gran Turismo, they worked with engineers from SV and Jaguar Racing to create something really special.

“The Vision GT SV is a dramatic and visually arresting car which showcases what’s possible when the traditional boundaries governing real-world car design are completely removed. In bringing this car to life with a full-size design study we’ve been able to showcase the most extreme version of an electric Jaguar race car that is inspired by the past but looks fearlessly to the future.”

Designed as the ultimate virtual endurance racer, the Jaguar Vision GT SV pays homage to its illustrious forebears not only in a host of styling and surfacing references but in its unique circuit board livery which nods to milestones such as the Le Mans debuts of the C-type and D-type in 1951 and 1954 respectively.

    Engineered by experts:

The streamlined, lightweight composite body structure now houses four Jaguar Racing and SV-designed electric motors to the Coupé’s three, generating a combined output of 1,903PS (1,400kW) and 3,360Nm of instant torque with the traction and dynamics benefits of intelligent all-wheel drive and torque vectoring. Acceleration from 0-60mph takes just 1.65 seconds, on the way to a maximum speed of 255mph.

The task of harnessing the Gran Turismo SV’s power to deliver an even more exhilarating racing experience for gamers fell to Jaguar’s SV engineering team.

Jamal Hameedi, Engineering Director, Jaguar SV, said: “We were given one objective: take everything that makes the Jaguar Vision GT Coupé so special – the performance, the handling and the soundtrack – and take it to another level.

“The team didn’t just achieve that target – they exceeded it, developing a virtual electric car which really could compete successfully in the extremes of 24-hour endurance racing. Not only that, they were able to see their work in the virtual world, turned into reality with the production of the stunning full-scale model which will no doubt excite gamers about what’s to come in Gran Turismo.”

The Vision GT Coupé’s elegant silhouette is still clearly recognisable in the GT SV, including the curvature of the C-type and D-type-inspired fenders, and – even with the additional motor driving the front axle – the wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,721mm.

Measuring 5,540mm from nose to tail, the GT SV is 861mm longer overall – a change driven entirely by aerodynamics. To deliver the increased downforce needed for greater traction for faster cornering and increased high speed stability on long straights, the GT SV has a new front splitter and a new deployable rear wing.

To solve the often conflicting requirements of increasing downforce while also minimising drag, the SV team worked with Jaguar’s designers to develop a full suite of features which work together to improve dynamics, stability, performance and efficiency.

In addition to the larger, more effective splitter – which produces downforce over the front axle – apertures in the front valance channel air across the face of the front wheels to reduce turbulence and help air to flow cleanly towards the rear of the car. Air passing through the wheel wells is also smoothed towards the rear via exit vents in the fenders.

The completely enclosed, sculpted underbody – which includes a keel element behind the front axle to aid high-speed stability – accelerates airflow, reducing its pressure and therefore helping to reduce lift, before it exits at the rear via a large venturi.

The single most effective aero feature developed for the GT SV is its deployable rear wing, inspired by endurance racing cars from Jaguar’s rich lineage, including the XJR-14. Meticulously developed from concept to final design through many iterations, the wing’s main, fixed, section wraps over and around the back of the car, blending smoothly into the rear haunches.

The wing is designed as an integral element of the sculpted bodywork while also providing the aerodynamic performance required for endurance racing: two moveable sections automatically rise at speed to deliver extra downforce when needed but drop back to their nominal positions to minimise drag.

As a result, the GT SV has a drag coefficient of Cd 0.398 – remarkably low for a race car – but also generates 483kg of downforce at 200mph.

Micheal O’Regan, Aerodynamics Senior Engineer, Jaguar SV, said: “All the aerodynamic features have been painstakingly optimised through cutting-edge computational fluid dynamics analysis – in exactly the same way we do with real-world projects such as the Jaguar I-TYPE Formula E race cars.

“What I’m most proud of is how we’ve developed the GT SV into a credible electric race car with performance on a par with current endurance race cars – and in such a short space of time.”

    Electrifying performance:

Jaguar Racing engineers developed the GT SV’s extraordinary quad-motor all-electric propulsion system. They also designed the system for the first Jaguar Vision GT car, applying all of their knowledge and experience from developing the Jaguar I-TYPE over six successive seasons.

The work was split into two main projects: A second 407PS (300kW) motor to the front axle to deliver the higher power and torque ratings required. Then the thermal management system was further improved to cope with the higher loads and to ensure that sustained high speeds and extreme acceleration could be maintained throughout an endurance race.

With one motor driving each wheel, the GT SV’s propulsion system generates a combined output of 1,903PS (1,400kW) and 3,360Nm torque. Each motor has its own single-speed transmission: these are designed to give the strength and robustness needed for the high torque ratings, together with minimal mass and friction for optimum efficiency, and the capability to deliver the car’s 255mph top speed.

As well as electric all-wheel drive the one motor per wheel configuration also enables infinite control of lateral and longitudinal torque distribution, delivering a step-change in torque vectoring capability for even greater traction, agility, and control.

Power comes from a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery pack which is housed low down in the GT SV’s light, stiff body structure, delivering a low centre of gravity, a low roll centre and near-perfect weight distribution.

James Barclay, Team Director, Jaguar Racing, said: “Working on the development of Jaguar’s Formula E I-TYPE race cars in parallel with the Vision Gran Turismo SV has given the Jaguar Racing engineers an unprecedented opportunity to apply their expertise to two incredible electric race cars – our most advanced Formula E car yet, and an endurance racer for the virtual world.

“Both have been designed and developed using state-of-the-art simulation tools to push all-electric powertrain and software technology to the limit, and we can’t wait to see them perform in Season 7 and Gran Turismo.”

The thermal management system is enhanced by an additional liquid nitrogen circuit which provides extra capacity to enable the battery to provide maximum power for longer while remaining within its ideal temperature range. The nitrogen cooling is also linked to the boost button within the cabin to ensure that even during the most demanding operating conditions the battery will not exceed its upper temperature limit.

    The ultimate virtual driving experience:

The unique, powertrain soundscape so fundamental to the visceral driving experience of the Jaguar Vision GT Coupé has been further enhanced for the GT SV version. Reflecting the increase in power and torque from the four electric motors to its precursor’s three, the GT SV generates a sound that is even more purposeful and distinctive, and is authentically yet futuristically Jaguar. Building to a crescendo at the 40,000rpm redline, it reflects the GT SV’s true racing DNA and delivers unrivalled driver reward.

The experience is heightened by an interior designed for racing. The pure, sweeping surfaces within the cockpit truly envelop the driver and position the instruments and perfectly weighted controls exactly where they need to be. Every component is beautifully crafted with absolute precision from advanced lightweight materials, including the new TYPEFIBRE fabrics used to cover the two sculpted composite seats. TYPEFIBRE is an innovative system of performance materials being developed by Jaguar to deliver a lighter alternative to leather with outstanding comfort and durability. TYPEFIBRE fabrics will be tested by Jaguar Racing in the I-TYPE 5 during season 7 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

  • Hybrid drive finds another new home at Audi as Q3 SUV joins the TFSI e family

    Audi Q3 Sportback 45 TFSI e / Audi Q3 45 TFSI e

Another convert to the zero local emissions movement is confirmed today as the new Q3 45 TFSI e stakes its claim as the first ever plug-in hybrid Audi model in the compact SUV class. The eighth member of the flourishing electrified TFSI e family will be available to order in the UK next spring in Q3 and coupé-inspired Q3 Sportback forms, the former featuring Technik, S line, Black Edition and particularly sumptuous Vorsprung specification options and the latter starting at S line level. In both a 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine and an 85 kW electric motor generate a system output of 245PS to enable travel without tailpipe emisions for up to 31 miles* between charges.

“TFSI e models are a perfect stepping stone on the path to electrification for Audi customers who are keen to play their part in the decarbonisation of our environment, but who are perhaps delaying making the leap of faith to a full EV due to lingering concerns about charging and range,“ says Director of Audi UK Andrew Doyle. “Like our other PHEV models, the new Q3 TFSI e can help to allay those concerns by proving how easily an EV can be assimilated into life, while also offering the safety net of an economical combustion engine which can greatly expand its range and refuelling possibilities if required. It’s a great way to begin gradually embracing the future of mobility.“

245 PS of system output, 13 kWh of energy capacity: the drive and the battery
The four-cylinder 1.4 TFSI petrol engine powering both new Q3 models contributes a healthy 150PS output, and this is supplemented by the 85 kW of power delivered by the permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM). Together, they generate 180 kW of system power (245 PS) and system torque of 400 Nm (295.02 lb-ft), on the strength of which both variants can reach 62mph from a standing start in 7.3 seconds and top out at 130mph.

The PSM is integrated into the housing of the six-speed S tronic transmission together with the separating clutch. This dual-clutch transmission transfers the power to the front wheels, and integrates an electric oil pump which maintains supply even when the TFSI engine is switched off to enable normal functioning and gear selection to continue.

The high-voltage battery is located under the vehicle floor in front of the rear axle and belongs to a new generation of compact and relatively lightweight units with enhanced storage capacity. Its 96 prismatic cells store 13.0 kWh of energy and maintain optimal performance with help from their own cooling circuit, which can also be coupled to the circuit used by the air conditioning system to ensure effective cooling even when requirements are at their highest.

Focus on efficiency: the drive management system
Optimal efficiency at every stage of a journey and in every scenario is naturally the overriding aim of the drive management system, so both new SUVs are always started in electric mode, except in extremely cold conditions.  At low speeds, their AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alert System) emits an e-sound to warn other road users of their presence. Both versions can cover up to 31 miles* at speeds of up to 87mph in electric-only mode with zero local emissions according to the WLTP test.

In “Auto-Hybrid” mode, the main operating mode, the drive management system divides the tasks between the 1.4 TFSI and the electric motor intelligently and efficiently. The electric motor supports the four-cylinder engine in a wide range of situations, such as when overtaking or when accelerating from low speeds, when it uses its strong and rapidly produced torque to imperceptibly bridge the few tenths of a second needed by the turbocharger to build up pressure.

Drivers can prioritise electric drive at a touch of the EV button. The drive management system constantly evaluates data from numerous sources, including the route information from the navigation system and feedback on the immediate surroundings from the vehicle sensors, to enable it to identify when the car is approaching a town sign, a speed limit or a roundabout, or is getting too close to the vehicle ahead. When the accelerator pedal is released, the Audi Q3 45 TFSI e and the Q3 Sportback 45 TFSI e start to coast with the TFSI engine switched off in most situations.

The right mode for the right requirements: “Hold”, “Charge” and dynamic
While the drive management system intelligently exerts its influence in the background, the driver always remains in control. Pushing the EV button determines which of the auto hybrid and electric-powered driving modes is active, and at the same time provides access to others  –  “Battery Hold” and “Battery Charge” – offered by menus that open up in the MMI operating system at the same time. These serve to keep the battery charge at the current level or to increase the state of charge. The driver can also fine tune the response of elements including the steering, engine and transmission using the Audi drive select dynamic handling system. It offers Comfort, Auto , Dynamic and Individual profiles, and in the Dynamic setting can make the full 330Nm (243.4 lb-ft) torque reserve of the electric motor available to the driver for up to 10 seconds if the S tronic is set to “S” mode and the accelerator is fully depressed. As soon as the pedal is released again, the electric motor switches to recuperation and recovers energy in generator mode. In this way, the vehicle can also decelerate quickly thanks to its electric motor.

Irrespective of the driving profile, both models always recuperate when the driver applies the brakes. Up to around 0.3 g – i.e. in the vast majority of braking situations encountered in everyday driving – the electric motor performs the deceleration alone. It is only when the brake pedal is applied more heavily that the hydraulic wheel brakes come into play, activated by an electric brake servo. Thanks to the precise blending, the transition is practically undetectable, and the recuperation remains active. During braking, the system can recover up to 40 kW of power through the electric motor and store this in the battery.

Conveniently versatile: charging at home and on the go
The Audi Q3 45 TFSI e and the Q3 Sportback 45 TFSI e can be charged using alternating current via a domestic AC wallbox using the Type 2 cable supplied. The process can be completed in 3h 45 minutes, and can be remotely controlled using the free myAudi app, which enables the driver to define activation and deactivation times and also to remotely activate the climate control via a smartphone or tablet to pre-heat or cool the cabin before a journey begins. A mode 3 cable is also supplied for charging at public AC charging terminals, a process which can be expedited through the use of the e-tron Charging Service, which gives TFSI e drivers the opportunity to recharge at more than 155,000 charging points across Europe with just a tap of a single RFID card that generates one convenient monthly invoice.

To make light work of long journeys the comfort suspension that is standard for Technik (Q3 only), S line and Black Edition versions of the Q3 45 TFSI e and Q3 Sportback 45 TFSI e provides suppleness and absorbency for smooth, serene electric-only travel but also a good degree of agility for more press-on driving. Vorsprung versions are equipped with an electronically controlled suspension system with adaptive damping which smoothes surfaces and straightens out corners even more impressively. The standalone Q3 Technik model rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, while the SUV and Sportback move up to 19-inch rims when equipped to S line and Black Edition level, and to a 20-inch design in Vorsprung form.

From S line level upwards all models benefit from privacy glass and the exclusive S line design for the bumpers, sill trims and diffuser, while Black Edition and Vorsprung versions add a black styling pack which darkens elements such as the grille surround, window cappings, roof rails (SUV only) and door mirror housings. LED lighting is standard across the board, with Vorsprung versions upgrading to Matrix LED units for even more precisely targeted illumination. S line interior detailing is common to all specification options bar the entry level Technik, with Piano Black inlays and a flat-bottomed multifunction steering wheel setting apart the Black Editions.

True to form in the Q3 range the seats offer excellent comfort, and the rear bench is notable for offering forward and backward adjustability to prioritise luggage or passengers. Its backrests are also divided into three sections and recline at seven different angles. The luggage compartment has a basic volume of 380 litres which increases to 1,375 litres in the Q3 45 TFSI e and 1,250 litres in the Q3 Sportback 45 TFSI e when the seats are folded down.

Experts in networking: Infotainment and Connectivity
Two displays form the basis of the operating and display concept in the new TFSI e models. Centrally positioned in the instrument panel, the MMI touch unit with its 10.1 inch screen shows the operating status of the hybrid drive system and is the access point for the top-of-the-line MMI navigation plus, which is a standard feature of all UK versions. Its functions are displayed on the MMI Touch display and in the instrument binnacle by the Audi virtual cockpit with its 10.25-inch screen, which is also standard. An expanded version with additional functions – the 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus – is fitted to Vorsprung models. In both formats a powermeter can be called up to show the drive system’s operating status, output and recuperation phases, the battery’s state of charge, and the range. Functions can be activated via the central touch screen, through the multi-function steering wheel or using natural-language voice control, which can source information stored in the cloud when formulating its responses to commands.

Access to the Audi connect portfolio is included for all versions on a three-year subscription basis and supplements the navigation with Google Earth mapping, traffic information online, points-of-interest search functionality and Car-to-X services based on the principle of swarm intelligence. These include updates on available roadside parking spaces in the vicinity and notifications of upcoming hazards and speed limits sourced through the networking of the Audi fleet. Audi connect also includes media streaming, online news and access to e-mail.

The Audi smartphone interface is standard, and enables a handset‘s Apple Car Play or Android Auto environment to be reproduced on the MMI display. Vorsprung versions also feature upgrades including the Audi phone box for inductive wireless charging of mobile handsets and the Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System with virtual 3D sound, as well as enhancements such as a panoramic glass sunroof, Alcantara and Twin leather-upholstery, front electric seat adjustment and heating and a host of additional driver assistance aids. A particular highlight among these is adaptive cruise assist, which supports the driver with acceleration, steering and braking within the limits of what is currently legally permissible, substantially enhancing comfort on long journeys in particular. These features add to a core package of assistance features for all models that includes Audi pre sense basic, pre sense front, Audi side assist blindspot monitoring and lane departure warning.

The new version builds on this success, by making numerous detailed improvements that combine to raise the bar in the high-performance SUV segment. With a wide range of technological enhancements from our team of expert engineers and a comprehensively improved exterior and interior finish, the new F-PACE SVR is more focused, inspires more confidence and is even more captivating than ever before.”

    Pinnacle of performance
The new F-PACE SVR is available exclusively with Jaguar’s 550PS 5.0-litre V8 Supercharged petrol engine, now with 700Nm torque – an increase of 20Nm. This uplift in torque delivers enhanced performance, with the F-PACE SVR capable of 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.0 seconds), three-tenths of a second faster than before, and a top speed of 178mph (286km/h), an increase of 2mph. The powertrain now features the same torque converter used in the record-breaking Jaguar XE SV Project 8 sedan, to withstand the higher loads produced. As well as the improved torque and acceleration, CO2 emissions are also reduced from 281g/km to 275g/km with fuel economy now up to 23.1mpg (12.2l/100km)**.

Enabled by Jaguar’s advanced new Electronic Vehicle Architecture, dubbed EVA 2.0, the transmission and dynamics systems have also benefitted from incremental tweaks. The uprated Dynamic mode features unique tuning, delivering a focused and honed driving experience. Jaguar SV’s engineers have recalibrated the software to provide sharper throttle response, stiffen the suspension set up, optimise steering weighting and enhance the exhaust mapping. A new Dynamic Launch feature also uses driveline inertia to maintain power to the wheels during gear changes, contributing to the SVR’s sharper acceleration from a standstill. At the same time, F-PACE SVR is now more comfortable and enjoyable to drive at a relaxed pace, without compromising its high-speed dynamics, further underlining the new model’s duality of purpose.

The steering system is enhanced with a new electronic power-assistance system delivering greater immediacy, providing a heightened connection between the vehicle and driver. There is a more defined difference to the steering feel between Comfort and Dynamic modes, to give these settings more focus.

Modified tuning of the adaptive damping provides a more refined ride at low speeds, which is further improved by revised chassis bushes. This tuning change has again allowed for greater definition of the ride between Comfort and Dynamic drive settings, demonstrating the F-PACE SVR’s dual capabilities as a luxurious and refined SUV with exceptional performance available in an instant.

Drivers also benefit from improved brake feel in the new F-PACE SVR. The 395mm (front) and 396mm (rear) two-piece disc brakes are now supported by a new Integrated Power Booster which, along with a recalibration of the system, delivers a sportier and shorter brake pedal. This tuning is specific to the SVR performance flagship, while the brake system uses an electric booster, rather than a vacuum system. The improved cooling and aerodynamics of the vehicle also improve the performance of the brakes, giving the driver even greater confidence.

The 5.0-litre V8 Supercharged petrol engine is paired with Jaguar’s ultra-responsive, smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission which delivers rapid gearshifts for effortless performance, while adapting the way power is delivered to suit the driving situations.

Paul Barritt, F-PACE SVR Chief Programme Engineer, Jaguar SV, said:“As a team, we’re incredibly proud of the F-PACE SVR, so trying to improve on the original was always going to be a difficult task. The move to Jaguar’s new Electrical Vehicle Architecture gave us the opportunity revisit the calibration of every single component, so we took the chance to fine-tune the driving experience to make it feel even more focused and even more refined. Those thousands of detail changes take the F-PACE SVR to the next level.”

Jaguar’s All-Wheel Drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics is fitted as standard. The technology has a rear-wheel drive bias for enhanced driver engagement and performance, with predictive and reactive software that can distribute torque to the front and rear axles independently, and almost instantly, to provide greater control and stability in low traction conditions. The retuned rear Electronic Active Differential delivers enhanced performance and greater confidence when required.

Adaptive Dynamics suspension technology ensures a precise, dynamic set-up coupled with a supple ride. In order to achieve this, the technology constantly analyses acceleration, steering, throttle and brake pedal inputs. Height sensors at each corner of the vehicle measure the vertical body movement, roll and pitch 100 times a second, while steering inputs are measured 500 times a second. Adaptive Dynamics uses these inputs to continually adjust the damper stiffness to maximise comfort and control.

Configurable Dynamics provides enhanced driver appeal by enabling the driver to set up the vehicle to suit their personal preferences, with a choice of Comfort or Dynamic settings applied to the throttle mapping, gear shift points, steering effort and suspension. A stopwatch, G-Meter and pedal graph also help the driver to monitor performance in Dynamic mode while Adaptive Dynamics continuously adjusts the dampers for enhanced comfort and refinement depending on road and driving conditions.

The new F-PACE chassis now supports the introduction of the latest JaguarDrive Control and new Auto Vehicle Hold function. JaguarDrive Control features Comfort, Eco, Rain-Ice-Snow and Dynamic modes, which can be chosen manually by the driver based on the road conditions. The settings, selected through a new rotary dial next to the all-new Drive Selector, optimise the F-PACE SVR’s steering, transmission, throttle and (when specified) Adaptive Dynamics settings accordingly.

Auto Vehicle Hold provides added convenience and smoother operation than conventional Automatic Hill Hold. The new technology holds the brakes for an unlimited period of time when stationary on a gradient, only releasing the brakes when the driver depresses the accelerator to drive away.

    Purposeful race-inspired exterior
The design of the new F-PACE SVR is inspired by SV’s motorsport experience, with enhanced airflow and aerodynamic benefits delivered through new apertures and vents for improved powertrain and brake cooling. The changes deliver superior aerodynamic performance including 35 per cent reduced lift and drag reduced from 0.37Cd to 0.36Cd. As well as the performance enhancements, these elements also provide a more purposeful aesthetic.

Surrounding the new SVR-badged grille, the revised bumper design features X-shape and blade-like elements intersecting the lower side air vents and intakes. An enlarged lower intake improves airflow, to cool the F-PACE SVR’s 550PS powertrain. While the new-look design delivers performance benefits, it also provides a more athletic appearance by visually lowering the front of the vehicle.

The larger aperture is framed by enlarged side vents, which help to direct air to the wheelarches for enhanced brake cooling. The openings are finished with a grille mesh design inspired by the record-breaking Jaguar XE SV Project 8, reflecting the lineage of high-performance Jaguar SV models. A new stretched diagonal blade element feeds further airflow to the brakes and engine, and adds to the dynamic stature of the vehicle, giving the F-PACE SVR a wider and lower stance.

New diagonal blades below the lower bumper, shaped in partnership with the SV aerodynamics team, ensure every design detail has a functional purpose, while also helping to visually plant the F-PACE SVR closer to the road.

The super-slim all-LED quad headlights with ‘Double J’ Daytime Running Light (DRL) signatures are available with optional Pixel LED technology* and deliver increased resolution and brightness. Adaptive Driving Beam capability* evaluates the road ahead and automatically adapts the high beam light to mask oncoming traffic or traffic signs, the system can create varying light beam patterns by selecting different LED segments to optimise visibility and minimise risk of distracting other drivers.

The new front-end design is finished by a longer bonnet design which features a wider power bulge flanked by air vents to help extract hot air from the engine bay.

New slimline rear lights feature Jaguar’s trademark double chicane graphic – first seen on the all-electric I-PACE – which accentuate the width of the vehicle. The new look is completed with the addition of the updated SVR logo, while quad tailpipes feature in the lower bumper, giving a visual reminder of the performance potential on offer.

The new F-PACE SVR is also available with a new 22-inch forged alloy wheel design. The five-spoke design is finished in Gloss Black with Satin Grey inserts, with the grey tone matching other exterior finishes on elements such as the side air vents and wheel arch trim, for a stealth-like appearance. This is all finished off with the new SVR logo printed on the wheel.

    Precision crafted interior
The interior of the new F-PACE SVR is comprehensively redesigned, with materials enhanced to heighten the dynamic character of the revised cabin and its controls.

Seat and door inserts are finished in Alcantara, with elements such as the central cubby and leather midroll wrapped in luxurious Windsor leather. The 12.3-inch HD Interactive Driver Display is wrapped in Alcantara with ebony stitching, while aluminium patterned finishers feature as standard with open-pore carbon fibre available as an option.

Optional slimline semi-aniline leather sports seats with heritage logo-inspired diamond embroidery across the front shoulder section, feature a unique perforation across the backrest, while the same pattern is used on the leather on the seatbacks An embossed SVR logo on the headrests adds a final flourish.

Jaguar’s new Drive Selector has a more performance-focused feel for the F-PACE SVR, finished in dimpled leather with heritage logo-inspired detailing and debossed SVR logo underlining the new model’s attention to detail. The outer rim of the bespoke SVR split-rim steering wheel wears the same leather finish, while the inside of the wheel features a unique Mars Red SVR stitch detail. Tactile zinc-alloy shift paddles provide heightened driver engagement when making manual gear changes.

Beside the Drive Selector sits the Start button and a new metallic rotary dial – for the JaguarDrive Control settings – which features knurled edging for a premium look and feel.

At the heart of the precision crafted and luxurious interior, with its new sporty centre console, incorporating an optional wireless device charger and improved console stowage, is the seamlessly integrated centrally-mounted 11.4-inch curved-glass HD touchscreen, which sits within an elegant magnesium alloy casing and provides access to the intuitive new Pivi Pro infotainment.

A series of advanced technologies ensure the health and wellbeing of all occupants. Cabin Air Ionisation improves interior air quality through Nanoe technology, which removes allergens and unpleasant odours. The system now also features PM2.5 filtration, which captures ultra-fine particles to improve occupant health and wellbeing. Customers activate the system simply by pressing the ‘Purify’ button within the infotainment.

    Cutting-edge connected technologies
The new F-PACE SVR features Jaguar’s advanced Electronic Vehicle Architecture, dubbed EVA 2.0, which supports a range of new technologies to ensure the future-ready vehicle is connected and up to date.

The latest Pivi Pro infotainment technology is accessed through the all-new 11.4-inch curved glass HD touchscreen. Key benefits include enhanced clarity – the display is three times brighter and 48% larger – and the simplified menu structures allow drivers to access or view up to 90 per cent of common tasks from the homescreen in two taps or less.

    2021 Renault Clio E-TECH1

Renault has introduced an advanced E-TECH powertrain to one of its most successful models ever, giving buyers of the best-selling Clio more choice than ever with a broad spectrum of engine and powertrain options.

The Clio, Renault’s popular supermini, is the definition of a success story with 30 years of providing excellent value, comfort and enjoyment. More than 650,000 Clios have been sold in the UK in the last 30 years, and the latest All-New Clio is the most advanced yet with a choice of efficient petrol, diesel and hybrid engines, a five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating and a broad range of well-equipped specifications.

The first Renault to be built on the modular CMF-B platform, the All-New Clio boasts evolutionary exterior design with a revolutionary interior featuring premium materials and the latest technology – including 9.3-inch EASY LINK touchscreen and crisp TFT Driver Information Display.

Further enhancing the appeal of the Clio is the advanced new E-TECH powertrain, introducing hybrid power to the Renault range for the first time. Debuting technology inspired by the Renault F1 team for energy optimisation and brake regeneration, all models fitted with E-TECH technology offer customers strong performance with low running costs, enhancing the driving experience and refinement of existing Clio models.

    Powertrain
The All-New Clio range has expanded with the new E-TECH hybrid powertrain, making full use of the expertise gained from the Renault Formula 1 Team in its application.

Available across all Clio trim levels, the E-TECH hybrid powertrain offers a flexible option to customers looking for both efficiency and performance.

Technology that’s found in an E-TECH powertrain can be broken down into two categories; the first is the way in which energy use and recovery can be optimised, while the other is the application of an innovative multi-mode dog gearbox for the first time in a production vehicle.

The electrification of Clio has been easy thanks to the versatile CMF-B modular architecture that was designed from the start to accept electric capabilities. In addition, the compact E-TECH powertrain can also be mounted in the engine compartment of the Clio E-TECH Hybrid, ensuring there’s no compromise in practicality elsewhere.

The hybrid series-parallel architecture ensures there’s a wide range of combinations relating to engine operations and the most effective CO2 gains while in use on the road. All E-TECH powertrains offer three levels of energy regeneration and regenerative braking.

The Clio E-TECH Hybrid makes use of a new-generation 1.6-litre petrol engine accompanied by two electric motors – an “e-motor” and a High-voltage Starter Generator (HSG) with aninnovative multi-mode clutchless gearbox. This revolutionary combination provides smoother gear changes that results in superior fuel efficiency.

A 1.2kWh (230V) lithium-ion battery also features, allowing significant reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, delivering the ability to complete 80 per cent of urban journeys in 100 per cent electric mode – selected via the MULTI-SENSE driving modes or a dedicated ‘EV’ button positioned on the dashboard.

The E-TECH powertrain automatically starts the car in electric mode, as the gearbox is clutchless – this means the engine does not need to be engaged when starting the vehicle. On start-up, the All-New Clio E-TECH Hybrid is responsive and refined with maximum torque but also maximum efficiency operating in electric mode.

The All-New Clio E-TECH Hybrid’s powertrain automatically adapts to the driving conditions and the way in which it is being driven – managing its power supply accordingly, as well as the battery regeneration opportunities.

The change from one mode to another is barely noticeable and requires no input from the driver – the E-TECH powertrain automatically decides the most appropriate mode for the situation to optimise efficiency and emissions, while continuing to deliver responsive and enjoyable driving.

    Performance, economy and driving
Compared with an internal combustion engine, the All-New Clio E-TECH Hybrid saves up to 40 per cent in fuel and is capable of travelling up to 80 per cent of the time in electric mode.

This makes it an ideal companion for urban journeys as it will travel at speeds of up to around 27mph in electric mode. Emitting as little as 98g/km of CO2 (WLTP), the All-New Clio E-TECH Hybrid returns fuel economy of up to 64.2mpg.

A total output of 140hp makes this the most powerful All-New Clio in the range, completing the 0-62mph sprint in 9.9 seconds. A choice of modes selectable via the MULTI-SENSE menus, or buttons on the centre console, allow the driver to tweak the driving experience to one of the following modes:

    • MySense: Best for everyday use, My Sense offers the best compromise in terms of performance and economy, using as much electric power as possible, but in the most efficient way.
    • Eco: Uses a more measured mapping of the accelerator pedal and adapted gear changing for the most economical drive.
    • Sport: Engages the full system’s potential all the time for faster responses and the most rapid performance.

Information is constantly fed back to the driver via the main EASY LINK touchscreen display as well as the instrument panel showing the energy flow to the drive system. A power meter on the driver display shows how aggressively the power is being requested – and by what means – while the battery meter on the other side shows the charge level in real time along with consumption figures.

All-New Clio retains the model’s trademark agility and driving fun. For starters, the steering has been made more responsive thanks to a reduction in ratio from 15.2 to 14.4, while the electrical assistance has been calibrated to provide more natural feedback. There’s also a more solid and stable mounting of the front suspension that helps boost steering accuracy, while a reduction in the turning circle from 10.8 to 10.5 metres improves agility around town.

What’s more, the overall chassis balance and location of the torsion beam rear axle have been improved for greater high-speed stability, promoting agile and assured handling. At the same time, optimised suspension travel means a more controlled ride with less bouncing around for passengers. Brake pedal travel has also been reduced for improved vehicle response.

    Exterior
The All-New Clio E-TECH Hybrid is available across all main trim levels: Play, Iconic, S Edition and R.S. Line, plus an exclusive Launch Edition. That means buyers have ultimate choice over the level of equipment they desire.

However, all Clio E-TECH Hybrid models offer some unique features to mark it out from the rest of the range.

On top of the Clio’s distinctive, evolutionary exterior, features specific to those with an E-TECH powertrain under the bonnet include E-TECH badging on the B-pillar and boot-lid, plus the option of a Hybrid Blue pack that features blue detailing to exterior – such as across the front grille, on the lower edges of the doors and rear bumper and the centre of the alloy wheels. A unique graphic below the front fog lights distinguishes the E-TECH Launch Edition models.

    Interior
E-TECH-specific features extend to the interior of Clio models fitted with the new hybrid powertrain, with subtle blue detailing running the width of the cabin in the air vents, around the gearlever, plus E-TECH badging. A unique light cabin environment is also available on S Edition and Launch Edition spec.

As with the rest of the Clio range, E-TECH Hybrid comes with the revolutionary interior that sets new standards in the supermini class with large, crisp display screens and premium finishes.

The Clio strikes a fine balance of comfort, technology and practicality, with eye-catching features. These include the large 9.3-inch EASY LINK touchscreen display, enveloping seats and striking ambient lighting in a choice of eight colours, with an ergonomic layout and driving position, enabling the driver to benefit from the superior refinement on offer.

All-New Clio E-TECH Hybrid models also come with a 7.0-inch TFT Driver Information Display, complemented by a 7.0- or 9.3-inch EASY LINK touchscreen display, dependent on trim level. The digital instrument cluster is unique to Clio E-TECH Hybrid models, displaying specific hybrid animations such as battery levels and energy flow, with a larger 10-inch version available. Everything from economy information to the full navigation map function can be displayed, giving the driver various options to personalise the interior experience.

The quality of materials is the best ever in the Clio, with a soft-touch dashboard top with a customisable centre panel that can be selected in a choice of colour packs. Premium materials for the heating and ventilation controls are found with satin finishes, while piano key buttons running along the bottom of the touchscreen give an upmarket lift and ease of access to key functions. A floating centre console gives the Clio’s interior a modern look with practicality benefits, housing a wireless smartphone charger and storage areas beneath.

The advanced hybrid’s clever packaging does not impede on the car’s overall practicality. The boot remains a versatile 300 litres, the rear bench folds flat and there’s room for a spare wheel too.

    Technologies
For the best part of three decades the Renault Clio has been leading the way for high specification and cutting-edge technology. More often than not the Clio has been the first car in its class to include features that had previously been the preserve of larger and more expensive models.

All-New Clio is no exception in this regard, delivering a raft of technologies aimed at making driving safer, simpler and more enjoyable. From advanced driver assistance systems through to three different infotainment options and a powerful BOSE hi-fi system, All-New Clio is packed with premium touches rarely seen on a B-segment model.

Renault is committed to delivering the latest connectivity and online services to its vehicles, and on Play models All-New Clio benefits from its tried and tested R&GO infotainment system, which allows drivers a straightforward and intuitive link between their smartphone and the car.

Using a universal cradle and a free-to-download app, owners can quickly access the four most frequently used functions – navigation, phone, multimedia and trip computer functions. In addition, there’s Bluetooth connectivity for phone and music streaming, plus both USB and aux-in sockets.

For All-New Clio Iconic, S-Edition and R.S. Line versions there’s the latest EASY LINK infotainment system. Boasting a seven-inch touchscreen display on the Iconic, and an even larger 9.3-inch portrait screen on the other versions, the EASY LINK screen is mounted centrally on the dashboard, within easy reach of both the driver and front seat passenger.

Grouping a number of connected services, platforms and apps, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the system simplifies connected mobility by offering remote vehicle management, more precise and easily configurable sat-nav routes, and simpler in-car integration of the connected worlds of the driver and passengers.

At its heart is an all-new smartphone-inspired interface that is user-friendly and functional, users are able to customise various screens using widgets to directly access their favourite functions. Crisp and clear graphics make it easy to view information at a glance, while intuitive pinch and swipe functionality offers quick and simple operation on the move. Of course, there’s always the voice control option for some of the programmes, allowing drivers to keep both hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.

There’s also 3D sat-nav mapping for even clearer route-finding. It works in conjunction with the seven-inch TFT display in the instrument cluster to beam useful information, such as sat-nav directions, directly into the eye line of the driver for even safer use on the move. The optional 10-inch Smart Cockpit instrument pack offers even greater opportunities for customisation of the data the driver can access.

On top of this the EASY LINK platform offers 4G connection to directly integrate services, including an automatic emergency call in the event of an accident. It also allows for a constantly refreshed platform of automatic updates, navigation integrating real-time information on traffic and danger areas provided by TomTom, as well as new functions such as Google Places. There’s also an electronic ecosystem of familiar services that are updated and continually enhanced by our partners including Google, TomTom and Coyote.

    Safety and driver assistance
Once again All-New Clio leads the way for pioneering safety, with both a five-star Euro NCAP rating and a range of hi-tech driver assistance systems that are more usually seen on bigger and far more expensive models. With everything from semi-autonomous driving functionality to a simple speed limiter, All-New Clio puts the safety of its occupants and other road users front and centre.

Leading the charge is the Traffic and Motorway Assistance Pack – a Level 2 autonomous driving aid, which is a first in this sector. This system combines adaptive cruise control (with Stop & Go) and lane centering. Active from 0 to 100 mph, the system controls the speed of the vehicle and maintains safe distances with vehicles ahead while keeping the vehicle centred in its lane. Particularly useful in heavy traffic, the driver assistance system also stops and starts All-New Clio automatically if the driver does not respond within three seconds.

Across the rest of the range the level of standard safety equipment is incredibly high. All models get lane departure warning and lane keep assist, plus traffic sign recognition with speed alert is also included, as is cruise control with a speed limiter function. Active Emergency Braking is also featured and is bolstered by the latest cyclist and pedestrian detection functionality.

Front, rear and side parking assist is standard on S Edition and R.S. Line models, as is a rear-view camera and automatic high and low beam for the LED headlamps. R.S. Line versions can be ordered with a Techno Pack that includes a 360-degree camera, wireless smartphone charging and Easy Park Assist, which automatically scans the side of the road for a parking space then takes control of the wheel for stress-free parking.

    Warranty
All new Renault cars are covered by a five-year warranty. It features an unlimited mileage limit in the first two years and up to 100,000 miles in the remaining three. E-TECH models are covered by an additional eight-year and 100,000-mile traction battery warranty for extra peace of mind.

    Manufacturing
The Clio is manufactured at the cutting-edge factory in Bursa, Turkey and was the first Renault model to benefit from new processes that make the company the number one large scale manufacturer for quality. Advanced computer modelling enabled prototypes to be closer to production form than ever before, while new technologies were introduced to improve the quality of the vehicle, including invisible chassis welds and extensive use of lasers for greater attention to detail and more accurate measurements. There were more validation tests for electronic components than previous Clios, while over 930,000 development miles ensure a rigorous and extensive development programme.

    30 Years of Clio
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the iconic Renault Clio supermini, the company’s most successful model and best-selling French car of all time.

The Clio was first shown in 1990 at the Paris Motor Show as the replacement to the successful and popular Renault 5. Light, efficient, spacious and comfortable, the Clio’s arrival marked a pivotal moment for Renault and would go on to become a multiple award-winner spanning five generations.

More than 15 million Clios have left production lines around the world over the last 30 years, with more than 1.2 million making their way to UK roads and into the hearts of drivers and passengers alike. It’s not just the UK, though – the Clio is the second
best-selling car in Europe and has been France’s most popular car for 21 of its years on sale.

Over the last 30 years, the Clio has been enhanced with every generation delivering greater comfort, more space, stronger performance, improved efficiency and the latest advanced technology. What’s remained consistent is the Clio’s distinct identity – providing the kind of refinement and appeal of a larger car but delivered in a small package.

The first-generation Clio will bring back memories for many of the iconic Papa and Nicole TV adverts. The first ever Clio brought a new level of French flair and sophistication to small car buyers, and immediately became a hit thanks to its clever packaging and the kind of comfort many would expect from a much larger vehicle. It – along with every model that has followed it – reached such a large number of drivers, passengers, individuals and families who would all go on to have some kind of Clio experience or memory. It’s a story that our latest Clio advert explored with a hugely emotional response as a result.

The second-generation Clio arrived a more rounded design that was befitting the late 1990s. It grew in size and continued to offer all Clio hallmarks of comfort, space and refinement.

Of particular note for this model were power steering and fingertip controls for the stereo, while a range of airbags made it safer too. It had its work cut out as the previous model was a sales hit. No problem, the second-generation model received several updates and had its biggest sales year of any Clio in 2002 with more than 86,000 sales in the UK alone.

By the Clio III, there were high standards to maintain. The previous Clio II went through several updates and was a huge success. Luckily, the same approach was made as last time with a new look, a more spacious interior and advances in technology and interior quality. Another hit, the third-generation Clio was awarded European Car of the Year in 2006, 15 years after the original Clio received the same award. In fact, the Clio was the first car to ever drive off with the prestigious title twice.

The Clio IV was a striking departure for Clio design, inspired by the DeZir concept car which stole the show at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, introducing a new design language to the brand. The fourth-gen model featured attractive styling and majored on personalisation – owners could specify a range of colour packs for the interior and exterior. Inside, an entirely new interior layout debuted with Renault’s R-Link touchscreen media system and a world-first bass reflex sound system.

Such was the success of the Clio IV’s design; its replacement features an evolutionary style that adds Renault’s latest design touches with C-shaped lights and full LED lighting for even more emotion. Inside, a revolution has taken place with a new digital experience including a large 9.3-inch portrait screen complemented by the availability of a 10-inch Driver Information Display. As always, the Clio’s refinement and interior quality has been enhanced for the new generation, bringing higher levels of driver comfort and advanced technology to supermini buyers, with all the makings of a great vehicle – just like the original.

Lotus is celebrating the all-electric Evija hypercar’s latest award win with a gallery of new images taken during a unique and inspiring collaboration with some of the UK’s most creative photographic talent.

The celebrations mark the results of the prestigious 2020 MUSE Global Design Awards, where the Lotus Evija took overall victory in the Automotive Transportation category.

The eight exclusive photoshoots took place in and around Duke of London, a former 1930s soap factory in West London transformed into a stunning motoring venue and tribute to all things automotive. Lotus invited each photographer to attend for one-on-one private access to the Evija, allowing them to choose how and where to shoot the hypercar – in their own style – in any location around the site. The results are now available at their respective Instagram feeds.
