  • Volkswagen Taigun Concept [video]

The entry-level crossover Volkswagen Taigun Concept is going to get in production not earlier than 2016.

The Taigun won’t be sold in United States because they believe Americans don’t want 3-cylinder gasoline or diesel engines and such compact dimensions. The Europeans don’t want it either, but somebody will buy it… eventually.

The Taigun Concept was presented back in October 2012 at the Sao Paolo Motor Show. The compact crossover is a direct rival of Ford EcoSoprt. The left-hand drive Taigun will be built in Sao Paolo, Brazil, while right-hand models are going to be assembled in Pune, India. Volkswagen is also analyzing the prospects of producing the car in Kaluga, Russia.

The three-cylinder engines will be connected to a manual gearbox (standard) or an optional dual-clutch transmission.

It seems Volkswagen is also planning an NG variant, while petrol-electric hybrid and full electric versions are under consideration.

  • Announced Pricing For The Volkswagen Beetle GSR Limited Edition

2013-Volkswagen-Beetle-GSR-LE-THUMbVolkswagen Beetle GSR Limited Edition was revealed to the world in May this year. Now the famous German brand is announcing the pricing of this special edition version of the iconic Beetle.

One of the reasons that make this Volkswagen unique is that only 3500 of it will be built globally. Secondly, the car is inspired by the GSR “Yellow Black Racer” which was famous in the 70s. This means that the new model will also include a yellow-and-black exterior.

To be more precise, the body and R-Line® bumpers are finished in yellow, while the hood is mainly black. The trunklid, roof, and the exterior mirror caps are also black.

In addition, the vehicle has yellow/black stripes with “GSR” lettering above the side skirts and a large rear spoiler. What completes the look of this GSR are the 19-inch “Tornado” aluminum-alloy wheels matched with 235/40 tires. They also feature black-painted brake calipers.

The interior of the Beetle is unique as the exterior and it is finished again in the same color scheme, visible in the sport seats and a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel. In fact, the black-trimmed leather seating surfaces and high-grip leather-wrapped steering wheel have contrasting yellow stitching.

Moreover, one can see inside the car a R-Line dash pad, a GSR shift lever, a leather-wrapped handbrake lever, and black floormats with contrasting yellow embroidery. A badge on the steering wheel is marked with the special-edition number which highlights the uniqueness of the car.

What is more, under the hood of this car is the EA888 turbocharged and direct-injection 2.0-liter TSI® engine. It is capable of generating 210 horsepower (155 kW) and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the limited edition car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in only 6.6 seconds and to reach a top track speed of 130 mph.

The unit is mated as a standard to a six-speed manual transmission. However, as an option Volkswagen offers a choice of a dual-clutch DSG six-speed automatic transmission.

The GSR is based on the R-Line with Sunroof and Sound with Navigation model, therefore it will offer to its customers wide range of technology features including the following: Fender® Premium Audio System, panoramic sunroof, RNS 315® navigation system, keyless access with push-button start, Bi-Xenon headlights with LED DRLs, LED license-plate lighting, heatable front seats, Bluetooth® connectivity, a Media Device Interface (MDI) with iPod® cable, three-color ambient lighting, aluminum-alloy-look pedals, clock with a stopwatch function and a boost gauge.

  • Volkswagen XL1 in London – 0.9 l per 100 km

Volkswagen has published a nice video showing the futuristic XL1 cruising across London. The manufacturers says that the XL1 is world’s most fuel-efficient production hybrid car capable of doing 313 mpg UK – 0.9 liters / 100 km.

While one XL1 made its way to the Goodwood Festival of Speed to take pride of place on the Volkswagen stand and make its way up the famous hill climb, another crossed the capital, heading to Buckingham Palace where it will be displayed as part of the Coronation Festival this weekend (for more details see below).

The XL1 is powered by a two-cylinder 800 cc diesel engine with an electric motor. To achieve the target fuel consumption figure the XL1 was aerodynamically optimised, adopting the classic ‘tear drop’ shape and utilising innovations such as removing traditional wing mirrors and replacing them with small cameras called e-Mirrors which transmit exterior images to interior displays.

The XL1 is ‘handcrafted’ using small series production processes.  An initial production run of 250 XL1 vehicles will be made.

Stay tuned for full specs and pricing!

  • Volkswagen 1.4 litre TSI – Engine of the Year for the 7th Consecutive Time

Volkswagen’s 1.4 liter TSI petrol engine managed to win Engine of the Year in its category (from 1.0 to 1.4 liter) for 7th consecutive time.

This makes the 1.4-litre TSI the most successful engine in the 15-year history of this international engine technology competition.

The manufacturer was the world’s first manufacturer to introduce active cylinder management (ACT) in the TSI four-cylinder last year – a technology that until then had been more familiar in large eight- or twelve-cylinder engines. Active cylinder management made its debut in the Polo and Golf 140HP (103 kW) 1.4 TSI. Temporary shutoff of the second and third cylinders – in conjunction with an economical style of driving – reduces fuel consumption by over 0.5 litres per 100 km.

Even with two cylinders the excellently balanced 1.4 TSI runs just as quietly and with low vibration as with four active combustion chambers. All mechanical switchover processes take place within one camshaft rotation; depending on engine speed this takes just 13 to 36 milliseconds. Accompanying interventions in ignition and throttle valve processes smooth the transitions.

Altogether, the components of active cylinder management weigh just 3 kg. Their actuators, the camshafts and their bearing frames are integrated in the cylinder head; two low-friction bearings reduce shaft friction. Important to know: only with the TSI concept – petrol direct injection plus turbocharging – is cylinder deactivation even conceivable in the form being implemented today.

Compared to its predecessor, fuel consumption and CO2 emission values of the TSI engines were reduced to 9% in part also by such measures as reducing internal friction, lowering weight and optimising thermal management. The savings potential is as much as 15%  in conjunction with the innovative active cylinder management (ACT) feature.

  • 6Vampir Volkswagen Golf Mark I – 1013HP [video]

Here is a very interesting drag vehicle. It is prepared by Boba Motoring, who are really fanatic in drag races. The project is based on Volkswagen Golf I and carries the name 16Vampir.

It is powered by a 1.8 liter 16V four-cylinder turbocharged engine with whopping 1,013HP (745 kW). The result is thanks to a really enormous Garrett GTX4202R turbo boosting the engine with 4.15 BAR pressure (60 psi).

The curb weight of the vehicle is just 900 kg (1,984 lbs), so it accelerates insanely. 0-100 km/h in 2.0 seconds and the top speed is unknown, but who will make more than 220 km/h in Volkswagen Golf I?

The engine is mated to a 6-speed DSG gearbox with a custom DSG ECU controller from AdrenalinTuning. The power is transferred on the road through 4Motion AWD and all four wheels have drag tires.

    Enjoy!
