  • Volkswagen Reveals New Golf R Estate at LA Auto Show

The big-booted version of Volkswagen’s superhatch VW Golf R is finally unveiled. It will make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, 2014. This is the first time when the Golf R model has been developed in an estate bodystyle.

Just like its hatchback predecessor, the new Golf R Estate takes its power from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged TSI petrol engine that is able to produce up to 300 ps from 5,500 to 6,200 rpm and 380 Nm of maximum torque available from just 1,800 rpm to 5,500 rpm. It is transmitted via a standard six-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) to the permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive. This is a certain recipe for maximum traction, excellent performance and active safety.

But how powerful is it? The manufacturer quotes a 0-50 mph, taking just 3.8 seconds, and 0-62 mph of 5.1 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Nevertheless, on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), the Golf R Estate consumes only 7.0 l/100 km or 40.4 mpg which is equal to average CO2 emissions of 163 g/km.

The design of the 2015 Golf R Estate is similar to that of the Golf hatchback up to the B-pillars. Yet, what really identifies and differentiates the car from the rest is the new R design bumper, a high-gloss black diffuser, four chrome-plated tailpipe trims, so-called ‘aero flaps’ on the D-pillars, cherry-red taillights and LED number plate illumination. There are also specific 18-inch ‘Cadiz’ alloy wheels and black-painted brake calipers with R logo which add finishing touches on the overall appearance. Optional 19-inch ‘Pretoria’ flow-formed wheels (exceptionally lightweight and sturdy) in motorsport design are available as well.

The interior of the Golf R Estate imitates the appeal of the hatchback version. It comes with Alcantara upholstery, R logos on the seats and steering wheel, a high level of standard equipment and blue highlights.

  • Volkswagen GTI Roadster Debuts at The Los Angeles International Auto Show

Volkswagen is going to depict its unconventional GTI Roadster concept car at the Los Angeles International Auto Show this week. The car was originally shown at the Wörthersee enthusiast festival in Austria in May. It clearly makes a statement which is able to blend in the virtual and the real world.

The GTI Roadster is a Golf GTI show car that is based on a CGI concept created to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Sony PlayStation®3 classic “Gran Turismo 6” (“GT6”). The two-seater generates its power from a 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbocharged TSI® engine that boosts 503 hp (375 kW)  and a mighty 559 Nm (413 pound-feet) of torque between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm; from just 2,000 revs, 369 lb-ft of that torque is available. The car benefits from a seven-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 4MOTION® all-wheel-drive system which transmit the power to 20-inch wheel-and-tire combination. To be precise, the 20-inch Golf GTI centerlock aluminum-alloy wheels have body-color elements and are 8.5J wide at the front and 9.5J at the back, with 235/35 ZR20 front and 275/30 ZR20 tires. This automotive monster accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in, approximately, 3.5 seconds and goes onto a top track speed of 192 mph.

The red exterior of the vehicle speaks for aggressiveness, provocativeness and looks into the future. The roadster body is aerodynamically optimized, with a chopped roofline and a massive rear wing being the most outstanding visual characteristic. Inside there is a carbonfiber monocoque and Alcantara seats as well as Alcantara four-spoke grip-style steering wheel.

The GTI Roadster, Vision Gran Turismo is available for download to owners of Gran Turismo 6 for the PlayStation 3 gaming console.

  • Tanner Foust Racing ENEOS RWB Volkswagen Beetle with SEMA Premiere

ENEOS-RAUH-Welt-Begriff-Volkswagen-Beetle-THUMBVolkswagen Beetle is conquering SEMA in a special form which is a result of the collaboration between Volkswagen rallycross driver Tanner Foust and famed Porsche tuners RAUH-Welt Begriff. As a basis they have used the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle R. The car has been subjected to customization and now is about eight inches of wider thanks to the distinctive RAUH-Welt Begriff wide body kit.

As a matter of fact both companies have been in talks over the past decade to do a project together. The result now is at hand, although this Beetle may seem like an unusual choice for a shop known worldwide for its work with Porsche 911s. However, the historic connections between the two cars made it a good fit … of course – through some innovation.

Starting with the wheels, this VW sits on custom Motegi Racing Traklite wheels. They come in the format of 18×10 inches at the front and 18×12 inches at the rear. They have been built specially with a one-off stepped lip.

The Tanner Foust Racing ENEOS RWB Beetle also includes brand’s R-Line accessories. This means that it gets upgraded shift knob and pedal set. What is more, additional accessories are in development.

There are no words on engine modification, but there sure are going to be some. At the top of the engine range of the production R-Line sits the 2.0 TSI, which produces 200 horsepower (147 kW) and we definitely expect to see this poweplant getting supercharged.

  • Volkswagen Golf R is the safest car on wet roads

    VW-Golf-R_thumbVW-Golf-R_651

Drivers in the Northern Hemisphere of the world now face winter, which always brings months of road challenges that include fog, ice, snow and rain. Most people will keep on driving even in these conditions so having a safe car for challenging roads is essential if you want to get from point A to point B with no problems at all. This is especially true if you own a performance car too.

Choosing one such car is now a bit easier thanks to the efforts of the British automobile magazine Autocar. According to it, the safest wet road performance car is the Volkswagen Golf R. The result was achieved after extensive testing that included various other models such as the MINI Cooper, Audi RS4, Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, Range Rover Sport, Toyota GT86 and Nissan GT-R. The safety test included five separate challenges at a manufacturer test facility at MIRA Proving Ground. We should also say that the cars tested used tires chosen by the vehicle manufacturer.

All cars underwent tests that included control over stopping from highway speeds of 70 mph (113 km/h), stability when accelerating, braking on ice-like conditions at lower speeds, level of lateral grip when cornering and precision around a circuit.

VW’s four-wheel-drive Golf R, which costs GBP 31,970 and produces 296 bhp (300 HP/220 kW), performed the best across all five tests, with the rear-wheel-drive GBP 24,995, 197 bhp (200 HP/147 kW) Toyota GT86 the worst. Running the VW Golf R close was the GBP 88,400 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S with exception for the Lateral Grip tests where it’s rear-biased weight distribution unsettled its handling.

“Driving conditions can become hugely challenging very quickly for drivers of sportier and higher performance vehicles. It is very easy to get caught out,” explains Chas Hallett, editor-in-chief of Autocar. “Advanced electronics certainly aid the driver, and winter tyres will improve grip, but drivers still need to drive within their limits and abilities, not the cars.”

The complete conversion costs no less than €20,000, which is a bit pricy considering you will drive a 15-year old Volkswagen Golf. However, the extreme petrolheads will really love it and there is no doubt that a lot of Mk4 R32 Golfs will get their additional punch.
