  • Scala raises the bar for value as ŠKODA introduces fleet-focussed SE Technology model

    Scala SE1

Available to order now with a P11D from £18,625, the Scala SE Technology can be specified with five different petrol engine and gearbox combinations. The 1.0 TSI three-cylinder unit is available with outputs of 95PS and 110PS, with the higher-powered engine offered with the option a seven-speed DSG. For customers preferring more power, the 1.5 TSI engine develops 150PS and can also be specified with a seven-speed DSG.

In keeping with ŠKODA’s other SE Technology models, the Scala variant features an equipment list developed specifically to meet the needs of business drivers. Building on the already generous specification of the standard SE model, the new SE Technology adds 16-inch Alaris alloy wheels, chrome window surrounds and rear LED lights with dynamic indicators. Inside, all SE Technology models include silver haptic decorative inserts along with a significant infotainment upgrade in the form ŠKODA’s Amundsen satellite navigation system with 9.2-inch glass colour touchscreen. The system comes with web radio and traffic sign recognition, while Care Connect and Infotainment online for one year is also included. Further peace of mind is provided by standard front and rear parking sensors.

Despite significant boost in equipment, all Scala SE Technology models command a modest £400 premium over the standard SE model, making it remarkable value for company and fleet buyers.

The Scala is the latest model to join ŠKODA’s acclaimed range of SE Technology models. The arrival of the Scala SE Technology further highlights the brand’s ongoing commitment to serving fleet customers. SE Technology models are now available on four ŠKODA product lines – Scala, Karoq, Octavia and Superb – with each one specifically tailored to meet the needs of fleet and business users.

Such is the brand’s increased presence in the fleet sector that Business Car magazine recently awarded ŠKODA its Most Improved Manufacturer 2020 title. This was in recognition of both the brand’s SE Technology models and the support provided by ŠKODA’s dedicated fleet team.

  • ŠKODA AUTO launches series production of the Enyaq iV at its main plant in Mladá Boleslav

    ŠKODA ENYAQ, výroba

Michael Oeljeklaus, ŠKODA AUTO Board Member for Production and Logistics, emphasises: “The Enyaq iV is ŠKODA’s first series-production model that was designed as an all-electric vehicle from the outset. This means our new SUV also places entirely different demands on manufacturing processes and production sequences than models with combustion engines. This is also reflected in the extensive preparation and conversion measures that we have been implementing at our main plant in Mladá Boleslav since last summer. Today’s start of production of the ŠKODA Enyaq iV, on the only production line in the Group for vehicles based on the MEB and MQB, is a very special moment for our entire team.”

At its headquarters in Mladá Boleslav, ŠKODA has invested 32 million euros in the conversion work required to enable both MEB and MQB models to be produced on the same line. In future, the brand will be manufacturing up to 350 units of the Enyaq iV here every day in a fully flexible manner alongside the Octavia and Karoq series. The car manufacturer adapted the building’s statics and designed the technologies for transporting parts to accommodate the weight of the fully battery-electric vehicles and the installed components. In addition, ŠKODA has introduced safety measures in the area of battery handling, for example, by installing thermal imaging cameras. These monitor the temperature in the workshop around the clock and trigger an alarm if any deviation is detected.

Rear or four-wheel drive, sustainable materials in the interior and innovative assistance systems
The ŠKODA Enyaq iV’s two battery sizes and four performance variants (UK information) ensure a sustainable yet fun driving experience. In the two most powerful variants, a second electric motor on the front axle works in combination with the rear motor. Depending on the battery size, the range is up to 316 miles in the WLTP cycle. Design Selections have replaced the traditional equipment lines for the interior. The harmonised interior options are inspired by modern living environments and use sustainably processed and recycled materials such as wool and leather tanned with plant extracts. The Enyaq iV is also the first ŠKODA model to feature a Head-Up Display with Augmented Reality, which displays information on the speed and traffic signs in two areas of the driver’s primary field of vision.

In mid-2019, ŠKODA presented the first electric series models in its 125-year history with the fully battery electric ŠKODA Citigoe iV and ŠKODA Superb iV with plug-in hybrid drive. At its main plant in Mladá Boleslav ŠKODA produces high-voltage traction batteries that are also used by other Group brands in their models with plug-in hybrid drive. ŠKODA AUTO also emphasises the importance of targeted and comprehensive training in the area of electromobility for employees and apprentices as well as suppliers. To date, more than 16,000 team members have successfully completed the special training courses.

  • Electrifying new Skoda Octavia vRS iV charges

    2021 SKODA Octavia vRS iV1

    The first electrified vRS

At the heart of the new Octavia vRS – the first vRS to be offered with a plug-in drivetrain – is a petrol and electric power unit fine-tuned to deliver a sporty and engaging driving experience. A 1.4 TSI petrol engine delivers 150PS while a three-phase permanent magnet 85kW electric motor boosts combined power output up to 245PS. Maximum torque output is 400Nm – 30Nm more than the previous Octavia vRS model.

The vRS iV is fitted with a 13kWh lithium-ion battery pack which can provide up to 39 miles of pure electric drive (WLTP) in addition to boosting the performance of the petrol engine. Charging is via a Type 2 connection and port located on the passenger side front wing. When connected to a 3.6kW charger, the battery pack can be charged from empty to full in 3.5 hours. Using a domestic three-pin 2.3kW power source, the pack can be fully charged in five hours.

Such is the efficiency of the Octavia’s combined petrol and electric drivetrain that drivers can potentially make significant fuel cost savings – depending on driving habits. The hatch version has combined WLTP fuel consumption figures of 256.8 – 176.6mpg, while the estate has WLTP combined figures of 235.4 – 176.6mpg. WLTP weighted CO2 figures are 26-36g/km for the hatch and 27-36g/km for the estate version.

    Performance and charging

The vRS iV is equipped with a six-speed DSG transmission with shift-by-wire technology as standard and is front-wheel drive. Both vRS iV body variants accelerate from 0 to 62mph in just 7.3 seconds and have a top speed of 139mph. Thanks to the increased torque output over the petrol-only Octavia vRS, the iV model is more than 2.2 seconds quicker from 50-70mph.

Drivers have a number of options that allow them to fine-tune how the vRS’s hybrid system operates. In Hybrid mode, the electronic control unit continuously assesses the current driving situation. Hybrid mode also offers the option of charging the battery via recuperation or the engine whilst the car is moving. If the box marked ‘Auto’ in the central display is left unticked, the driver can set their own desired battery level. If the current charge is below the specified amount, the vehicle tops up the battery using the petrol engine and brake energy recovery until the desired mark is reached. If the current charge is higher than specified, the energy is used until the desired level is met, and this is then maintained. If ‘Auto’ is selected, the charging system operates completely autonomously. This means the control unit decides based on the current driving situation when to draw power from the battery and when to recharge it using recovered energy.

    Design and equipment

In terms of design, the new Octavia vRS iV is almost identical to its petrol-only sibling. Both hatch and estate models feature unique front and rear bumper designs that incorporate a host of black details.

These include the double-slat radiator grille, lower air diffuser and the distinctive air curtains above the front fog lights. The door mirror housings and window frames are also finished in gloss black, while the estate model is finished with black roof bars as standard.

At the rear, the hatch model adds gloss black aero flaps, diffuser and a subtle bootlid spoiler, while both models come with chrome exhaust tailpipes and bespoke vRS and iV badging as standard.

Inside, the new vRS iV combines sportiness with comfort and a generous quota of technology. The new multifunction three-spoke leather steering wheel is equipped with DSG paddles and new knurled wheels in a chrome design.

The heated front sports seats feature integrated headrests and are upholstered in black fabric while a black headlining further enhances the sophisticated interior ambience. The new seats, along with the steering wheel, armrests and Alcantara-padded instrument panel all bear the famous vRS logo and distinctive red stitching. Carbon optic decorative strips, LED ambient lighting and aluminium pedals complete the vRS’s interior design package.

vRS models have always showcased the latest technologies and the fourth-generation model is no exception. ŠKODA’s acclaimed Virtual Cockpit instrument panel is fitted as standard and offers an additional Sport layout. The iV model features a unique instrument panel while the infotainment screen has additional menus and driving data relating to the hybrid functions of the car.

  • Skoda continues its electric evolution as Octavia adds iv plug-in hybrid

    skoda1

ŠKODA is continuing its ambitious electrification programme with the addition of a new iV plug-in hybrid model to its award-winning Octavia range. Using the same petrol/electric drivetrain technology seen in the Superb iV and the Octavia vRS iV, the new Octavia iV is priced from £30,795 OTR and is available in hatch and estate forms.

Thanks to its plug-in hybrid drivetrain, the Octavia iV is the most fuel-efficient Octavia ever built with a WLTP fuel consumption as low as 282.5 -188.3mpg. CO2 outputs are equally impressive at just 22-33g/km on the combined cycle.

    Plug-in hybrid system
Key to the Octavia iV’s low fuel consumption is its advanced petrol/electric plug-in hybrid system that combines the strength and cruising ability of a four-cylinder 1.4 TSI petrol engine with a high-torque, zero emissions 85kW electric motor. The total power output of the hybrid system is 204PS while torque is a remarkable 350Nm.

Power for the electric motor comes from a 13kWh battery back located in the floor just ahead of the rear axle. The Octavia iV has an all-electric WLTP driving range of up to 43 miles and features a host of driving modes that owners can fine-tune to their needs. For example, selecting E-mode will keep the Octavia in electric drive only and is perfect for driving in urban areas or on short commutes.

In Hybrid mode, the car’s electronic control unit continuously assesses the current driving situation. As soon as the vehicle is in motion, interaction between the petrol engine and electric motor is automatically regulated. Either they complement one another when used simultaneously, or the electronics activate only one of them. Hybrid mode also offers the option of charging the battery via recuperation or the engine while the car is moving. This allows the driver to set their own desired battery level. If the current charge is below the specified amount, the vehicle tops up the battery using the petrol engine and brake energy recovery until the desired mark is reached. If the current charge is higher than specified, the energy is used until the desired level is met, and this is then maintained.

The system can also operate completely autonomously in Hybrid Auto mode. This means the control unit decides based on the current driving situation when to draw power from the battery and when to recharge it using recovered energy. In Hybrid mode, an output of 150PS is available at all times. This can be boosted to 204PS in kickdown by pressing the accelerator pedal down fully or selecting Sport mode.

    Charging
The Octavia iV’s plug-in hybrid system can be charged easily via an industry standard Type 2 connection (cables included as standard). The charging port is located on the passenger side front wing and is equipped with an LED light that shows the status of the charging system. The Octavia iV on-board charger is rated at 3.6kW, which means that a full charge on a standard domestic or workplace 16A supply will take 3.5 hours from empty to full.

In addition to being supplied with a 16amp AC charge cable for wallbox/chargepoints, the Octavia iV also comes with a 10amp mains UK 3 -pin charge cable as standard.

    Body styles and specifications
The Octavia’s plug-in hybrid drivetrain is available in two familiar trim levels at launch; SE Technology and SE L. Both can be specified with hatch or estate body styles and come with a host of equipment enhancements over their petrol or diesel-powered siblings. For example, both iV models add 18-inch Vega Aero alloy wheels, decorative door sills and a storage compartment in the boot for the supplied charging cables. Both iV models also feature unique instrumentation and displays that show the vehicle state of charge along with the various driving modes.

  • British drivers love to give names to their vehicles – check the names out!

2020 SKODA LineupA peculiar survey in the UK reveals that drivers give names to their vehicles. Something more, some Brits admit that they name their beloved car after a family member or a loved one, according to new research conducted by SKODA.

The research took participation about 2,000 drivers of which 32 percent revealed that they had named at least one of their vehicles, and a quarter of those 2,000 admitted to naming at least three or more vehicles during their lifetime.

SKODA’s research has also acknowledged the individual relationship that people have with their cars, with over 450 unique names given by drivers. Some of the more common include Betty, Freddie, Daisy and Rosie, Harrison Ford, and Elvis. However, there are also vehicles by the name of Bubbles, Beast, The Brussel Spout, Zorro, and even Ketchup.

As it seems, the majority of Brits who name their vehicles have done it solely out of humor. However, there are owners who have given a particular name to their cars because they believe it looks like this particular name, while others give a specific name, because it reminds them of someone else.

Additionally, the findings from SKODA, whose in-car voice assistant is called Laura, also found out that the female drivers were almost twice as likely as making drivers name their vehicles, while men were much more to use a name of a loved one, compared to women.

This fun tendency extends beyond simply naming cars – SKODA’s research also found out that Brits had an incredibly strong affection for their vehicles, with 10 percent of drivers admitting they loved their cars more than their spouse or partner.
