  • Porsche 911 Targa: A Modern Classic Debuts

Porsche-911-Targa-shadowPorsche-911-Targa-mediumThere it is. The Porsche 911 Targa marks its world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show. We are genuinely excited about this one, because you know, it brings something fresh to the table. Yes, it’s a reinterpretation of a classic, but even that is welcome in our books in this world of compact-SUV dominance.

How does the Targa essentially differentiate itself from the rest of the Porsche lineup? Well, it’s a coupe but it’s not, a convertible but not entirely. It has a retractable roof over the driver and passenger seats, a wide bar where you’d expect to find the B-Pillers, and a wrap-around rear window without any pillars again. This being the 21st century and all, everything happens electronically.

Basically, the Targa system has two movable parts: a soft top and a glass rear window. With the press of a button, the rear window, which is attached to the convertible top compartment lid, opens up and tilts automatically. All the while, two flaps open in the Targa bar, releasing the soft top’s kinematics. The convertible top gets released, folded into a Z-shape as the roof opens, and stowed away behind the rear seats. Once the top has been retracted, the flaps in the bar close and the rear window moves back into position once again. The roof takes around 19 seconds to open or close only when the vehicle is stationary. In case you don’t want the wind in your hair when the top is down, a deflector integrated in the cowl panel frame can be put up manually.

Although Porsche are being silent about the weight, they do stress out that the rear window is made from an extremely lightweight laminated safety glass. Inside the cabin, the front roof element is lined with black fabric while the Targa roof bar boasts a layer of Alcantara.

As for the oily bits, the Targa – in true Porsche fashion – comes in to models: the 3.4-liter, 350 hp 911 Targa 4 and the 3.8-liter, 400 hp 911 Targa 4S. Both are all-wheel drive exclusively. The former comes with a 7-speed manual as standard. Should you chose, however, to equip it with Porsche’s Doppelkupplung transmission and the Sport Chrono Package, you’d be able to hit the 60 mph mark in 4.8 seconds.

The 911 Targa 4S, on the other hand, does the same stretch in 4.4 seconds with the same ticks on the options list. Both versions get pretty good gas mileage as well. From 32 to 28 mpg depending on the model choice and transmission.

Standard equipment on each model includes leather interior, sports seats, automatic climate contro, Bi-Xenon headlights, 7-inch color touch screen navgation, digital radio, MP3 connectivity, Porsche Stability Management, Porsche Traction Management and a three-year warranty.

The Targa 4S adds to that 20-inch alloy wheels, Porsche Active Suspension Managemnet, torque vectoring, and a rear limited slip differential.

  • Porsche 991 Targa Tributes Original [TEASER]

Porsche-911-Targa-Teaser-mediumWhat you see above is the original Porsche 911 Targa from 1965. The new one that’s coming out any moment now, is supposed to pay an homage to it. Porsche are still silent about how exactly the 991 Targa is going to look like so our guess is as good as yours. Having the signature movable center roof section and wrap-around rear windows is a certainty. An image claiming to be the real deal is floating around the internet, but we’ll let you fish it out.

The officials are simply saying: “hey, come and watch the official reveal at the NAIAS in Detroit.

Detroit is where Porsche will also put the Cayenne Platinum Edition and Cayenne Diesel Platinum Edition on a show stand for the first time: basically the Cayennes you know with an extra bit of spice such as exterior touches and interior two-tone color schemes. The Macan S and Macan Turbo will also be there, should you be interested.

But let’s face it, all eyes will be on the rarity that is the 911 Targa. Can they really go wrong with it?

  • 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Race and Road Cars

Porsche has introduced 2014 911 GT3 Cup Race Car and Road model as well. The new 911 GT3 Cup is the latest edition of the best-selling racing car of all time, having been built in a production series of more than 2,000 since 1998.

The new 991 911 GT3 Cup Racer is based on the 911 GT3 road car. It is powered by a 3.8 liter flat-six – 460HP (338 kW) at 7,500RPM – an increase of 10HP compared. The engine is mated to a 6-speed dog-box developed by Porsche Motorsport sending the power to the rear-wheels.

First run in 2003, the Carrera Cup GB is Britain’s fastest single marque GT racing series and has a permanent position as prime support to the British Touring Car Championship. Full details about the Carrera Cup GB will be available from the Porsche stand and Championship representatives will be on hand throughout the Show to take enquiries.

The 2014 schedule includes a sensational date on the morning of the Le Mans 24 Hours race in June, when the Carrera Cup GB will run alongside the Carrera Cup France as the prime support of the famous French endurance sports car race.

2014 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Road Car is priced from £100,540. It comes with a highly specialized performance drivetrain comprising a 3.8-litre flat engine developing 475HP (350 kW) at 8,250RPM, a Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch gearbox, and high traction rear-wheel drive. 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 12 seconds. The lap time on the Nurburgring-Nordschleife is even more impressive: the new 911 GT3 completed this track, commonly regarded as the most difficult in the world, in less than 7:30 minutes.

Porsche is using active rear-wheel steering for the first time. Depending on the speed, the system steers in the opposite or the same direction as the front wheels, thereby improving agility and stability. Among the other new driving dynamics features are the electronically-controlled, fully variable rear differential lock, and the dynamic engine mounts.

The height, toe and camber of the newly-developed all-aluminium suspension is still adjustable. There are also new 20” forged alloy wheels with central locking used for optimal contact with the road.

Traditionally, the 911 GT3 comes as a two-seater based on the lightweight body of the current-generation 911 Carrera. However, the front and rear part are always model-specific. For this latest generation, the 911 GT3 is 44 mm wider than a 911 Carrera S across the rear axle. Another clear identifying feature is the large, fixed rear wing. This makes a decisive contribution to the exemplary aerodynamics of the new 911 GT3, which combines low air resistance with a further increase in downforce.

The interior will also get some new elements in carbon fiber.

  • Gemballa GTP 700 Being Really Quick On The Nardo Ring

    GEMBALLA-GTP-700-Porsche-Panamera-Turbo-shadowGEMBALLA-GTP-700-Porsche-Panamera-Turbo-medium

The Nardo Ring test track, borrowing its name from the town of Nardo Italy because of the relative proximity of the two, is a 7.8 mile circle track with a constant bank. So, due to its specific nature no car is truly capable of reaching its top speed. We don’t want to get all technical. Let’s just say that because of the angle of the outer-most lane (the fastest one) there’s more downforce on the inside wheels of the car and then some stuff happens and you can’t go as fast as you would on a straight track.

Still, you can go really, really fast. Manufacturers keep setting Nardo specific benchmakrs, and one of the most recent is the deed of the GEMBALLA GTP 700 – A Porsche Panamera Turbo-based aftermarket monstrosity. As the name suggests, it boasts 700 hp. To get from 0 to 60 in it would take no more than 3.3 mph seconds. Also, 0 to 120 mph takes 9.6 seconds, and 0 to 180 mph 26.5 seconds. How far up did it go on the ring, you ask? 211 mph. Independently verified by trade journals such as AUTO BILD, SPORTSCARS and Continental.

GEMBALLA are especially proud with the fact that the GTP achieved that completely unmodified in all of its two-ton glory. “The huge 22-inch wheels, unique to this car in the starting field of cars with a performance of more than 300 km/h, were entirely unaltered, as was the full equipment including rear-seat entertainment facility. In addition, the weight, the engine as well as the aerodynamics remained unchanged and were not adapted for this particular occasion,” says Andreas Schwarz, CEO of GEMBALLA, who drove the car himself.

Don’t take his word for it. See it for yourselves:

  • KTW Tuning Enhance The Porsche 991 Carrera S

    KTW-Porsche-Carrera-S-991-medium

The Porsche 991 (AKA the 911) – fifty years of history, pedigree and fine-tuning. Can it ever reach perfection? Is there such a thing as perfection? Okay, let’s not get too philosophical about it. After all, what’s good and what’s bad and what’s perfect is a very subjective point. That explains why KTW from Germany have taken up enhancing the Porsche Carrera S 991.

Rest assured, the Porsche’s 3.8-liter 400 hp has been left immaculate. In fact, all KTW did was to get their hands on a TECHART body kit and glue it on. In other words, a front lip spoiler, two side skirts, two wing mirror caps, a rear lip-like spoiler and a big anti-wing on top. Okey so there are also the Formula III 21-inch wheels which complete the picture .

Again a TECHART feature, is the noselift system which is supposed to eliminate that fear of scraping a speed hump. There’s also a custom made exhaust system with valve control.

KTW say that the interior too has undergone a lot of changes – the steering wheel, the seats, the dashboard, the center console and many other. There is, however, nothing specific on these modifications. The seatbelts are red. Does that count?
