  • Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

Mercedes-Benz-CLS-Shooting-Brake-thumbIt’s common knowledge that nowadays, car makers are trying to dominate every segment out there. But some companies are now even changing the rules. With no fields left for dominance, Mercedes-Benz set out to create new categories. The CLS serves to prove that point – a four door coupe. Are you ready for the next step? The Mrecedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake (see concept) – a five-door, estate coupe. Sound’s ridiculous right? But it looks just as good as it is mad.

It may not be a full blown estate but it is actually bigger than the current E-Class wagon. Still, boot space at the back is inferior to the one of the E-Class, but you can opt to have it all covered in a cherry tree wooden trim… which will not help at all in terms of practically bit it will “underscore the hand-finished nature of the interior”. Most of all, by doing so, you won’t put much strain on the engine since the Shooting Brake engineers have kept it light by installing frameless, completely aluminum doors which are 24 kg lighter than they would be if steel was used. The tailgate, hood, front fenders and other elements of the suspension and engine are aluminum as well.

    Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake
    Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

Another coupe feature of the CLS Shooting Brake is it’s shape. Besides soothing the eye, the design also has an aerodynamic perk – a Cd value figure of 0.29. Good news then for the efficiently oriented engine options. Two diesels: One being a four cylinder and the other, a CLS 350 CDI 3.0-liter V6 that develops 265 bhp and returns 47 mpg . Zero to sixty acceleration for that latter one takes 6.6 seconds while the top speed is limited at 155 mph. Both of the engines make use of a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission and both have an ECO start/stop system as standard. Another feature that increases the distance between gas station stops is the Electric Power Steering system which is also said to be superior in feedback.

No word on the pricing but our guess is that the end figure will be perfectly sensible with traces of lunacy and dynamism. When AMG get their hands on a CLS Shooting Brake expect full on lunacy and dynamism.

Furthermore, the new Mercedes-Benz SUV vehicle has as a standard safety features the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST collision warning system and ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system. One of the new GL’s innovations and highlights is the standard-fit Crosswind Assist, which helps the driver by targeted brake actuation if the vehicle is affected by sudden crosswinds.

More importantly however are the new added engines which deliver better performance with increased output and torque, while at the same time enabling a reduction in consumption levels. As a result, the 190 kW (258 hp) GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC achieves an NEDC consumption of 7.4 l/100 km, the V8 petrol model, the GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY, produces 320 kW (435 hp) and has torque levels of 700 Nm while consuming just 11.3 l/100 km (NEDC).

  • VATH Show Class with the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL

VATH-Mercedes-Benz-300SEL-thumbThe guys at VATH are notorious for taking in already vicious AMGs and turning out even more viscious AMGs. But what follows here is proof that deep down, their philosophy is not all steroids and swagger. It’s a restoration program that involves a Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL – a pinnacle of luxury that dates back to the 70s.

So what have they done exactly to it? Besides looking very crisp… and having additional rally style projector lights installed, the 300 SEL has had it’s engine completely taken apart and inspected. Everything from the cylinder head to the crankshaft has been milled, drilled and rebuild. The pistons have been replaced and the connecting rods along with the bearings on them: renewed and modified. It’s all precision work when working in VATH. More peripheral components are usually inspected as well – think in terms of oil or water pumps or axles even. As an end stage, the SEL goes through some computer diagnostics and then it is ready to go out.

And although it will not fly out the garage, it might raise some smoke. The original Mercedes-Benz SEL 300 had (and evidently still has) an M100 V8 engine with 6.3 liters of displacement. That translates in 250 PS and 510 Nm of torque. 6.5 seconds, even by today’s standards, sounds pretty brisk when doing the 60 mph run. Top speed – 220 km/h. But all of that is irrelevant really. If we were to take a ride in it, the needle will be stuck around the cruising 30 mph so that everyone on the streets can marvel at the majestic sight of a VATH Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL.

  • Vilner Gentle Pagoda Mercedes-Benz W113

Vilner-Pagoda-Mercedes-Benz-thumbWhat constitutes having class? Wine and cheese, caviar? Or maybe golf… going to the opera every now and then? We don’t know. If someone asks us to show up at a party we’ll most probably go for our Hawaiian shirt, shorts and flip-flop gear. The one thing that would be on our minds however, will be our ride. There’s much to choose from… in our alternate reality where we own Jay Leno’s garage. Today though, we stumbled upon a prime candidate – A Mercedes-Benz Pagoda from the 60s. It has however, been renovated by the guys at Studio Vilner so it’s now the Gentlie Pagoda.

Keeping faithful to their own signature, Vilner have made little to no modifications on the outside but once you step in, the premium stuff becomes noticeable. There’s a prevailing latte/coffee theme that’s been achieved with a two-toned leather material. Chrome and mahogany shine again on the dashboard and the steering wheel. The trunk has been specially tailored and comes with a jewelry box while on-purpose-faded aluminum sill plates read “Gentle Pagoda”.

At Studio Vilner, they know their classics, and that has to make them classy, right?

  • Inden Design Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG: where fashion and tuning meets

Inden-Design-Mercedes-Benz-SLS-AMG-THUMBThe new Inden Design Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG shows great style and powerful stance. However, it tells a story not not only about that. It serves the purpose to be „co-acting“ star next to photo model Katja Runiello in her latest photoshoot.

The beautiful model, dancer and actor is a well known personality, since her appearance in the RTL television series “The Bachelor”. SLS AMG’s popularity can be described simply by two words: „living legend“.

The 10.5 and 11.5-inch wide single part product were combined with Continental Sport Contact high-performance tires of the dimensions 265/30R21 for the front and 295/25R21 for the rear.

Inden Design tuned the serially produced coilover kit of the Mercedes-Benz, so that it now cowers more flatly on the surface.

More importantly, the 6.2 liter V8 engine shows great dynamic portfolio from the gentle rumbling in Piano up until the thunderous roaring of the Fortissimo. This is achieved thanks to the serially produced exhaust system in high-grade steel in non-ostentatious visual appearance with electronic valve control.

However, Inden Design even increased the maximum performance of the high-revolving eight-cylinder powerhouse by further maximizing the engine software from 571 hp (420 kW) in standard production to the present 623 horsepower (458 kW).

The pictures below, are creation of the photographer Olaf Pitzer from Nauroth. Katja’s feminine dress was designed by the Haute Couture designer Elvira Kirsch. And the perfect make-up was made by the stylist Katharina Freitag.

2013-Mercedes-Benz-SLS-AMG-GT-THUMB2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT comes to offer enhanced driving dynamics and even better track performance. Furthermore, the SLS AMG now has more masculine and athletic stance. It is equipped with darkened headlamps and tail lights as well as red-painted brake calipers. All this contributes for the unique new appearance of the vehicle.

Another important highlight here which contributes significantly for the great performance of the vehicle is the newly developed AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension. What it does is to improve the vehicle’s sportiness.

The new AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension includes stiff spring/damper tuning and dispenses with “Comfort” mode. “Sport” mode is recommended as the maximal setting for undulating road surfaces and tracks requiring increased suspension travel. • VÄTH V63 Supercharged Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series

V63-VATH-Mercedes-Benz-AMG-Black-Series-thumbLong time, no see from Väth. Still, here’s a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series. The German tuners however, would prefer to call it the V63 Supercharged – more power, more pipes, more stopping forces at work and less ride height. Throw in some wheels and you’ve got yourself a true Väth product.

A “normal” engine in a C63 AMG Black is pretty satisfying, isn’t it? Well, according to our friends here, there’s always room for more. And technically, they are right. Sure, it develops 510 hp but it is, and has always been, naturally aspirated. Väth quickly tended to that issue, hence the name (Supercharged?). They also fiddled with the engine electronics, slotted in big intercoolers and concluded that the V63 now shreds it’s tires with 756 hp and 800 Nm of torque. To cite some performance figures here – 0 to 100 km/h – 3.6 seconds, Top speed: 350 km/h (with the right tires).

In addition, a stainless steel exhaust-manifold system has been provided as well as a catalyst device further down the line, and a silencer with a remote-controlled valve at the back. No new tailpipes though. The new shock absorbers allow the Black to be lowered or elevated within a 20-65 mm range. 405 mm discs on the front axle ensure that you have the stopping power to match the dynamic performance. Over them, three-piece forged wheels have a functional and aesthetic purpose – 9 x 12-inches with 255/30/20 of rubber at the front and 11 x 12-inches at the back wrapped in sizes 295/25/20 tires.

Inside, you don’t get much except a costly new steering wheel with leather/leather or carbon/leather or even wood patterns. Also there’s an extension of the speedometer which will now count to 400 km/h.
