  • Mercedes-Benz SL63 S AMG E Performance

Mercedes-AMG crowns the SL series with the new SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE (weighted fuel consumption, combined 7.7 l/100 km; weighted power consumption, combined 11.5 kWh/100 km; weighted CO2 emissions, combined 175 g/km[1]). The 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and the AMG Electric Drive Unit together generate a system output of 600 kW (816 hp) and a maximum system torque of up to 1,420 Nm. This makes the new model the most powerful SL of all time. And it is already the fifth series with the AMG-specific E PERFORMANCE hybrid technology. The immediate response of the electric drive, the rapid build-up of torque and the linear power delivery enable an impressive driving experience. The acceleration to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and the top speed of 317 km/h underline the confident appearance. Systems such as the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with active roll stabilisation and active rear-axle steering ensure a widespread between comfort and driving dynamics.

“The SL has always been an icon in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. The latest version of the legendary roadster transfers this status into the future. First and foremost is the new SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE, which, with its innovative technology, is the most powerful member of the SL family. With this unique concept, we offer our customers not only superior performance but also the option of all-electric driving. Extensive equipment options and the high-quality materials used also make the SL one of the most exclusive roadsters on the market – a real dream car.”
Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes Maybach divisions

E PERFORMANCE: Combustion engine at the front, electric motor at the rear

In the SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE, the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine on the front axle is also combined with an electric drive unit on the rear axle. It integrates a 150 kW (204 hp), permanently excited synchronous electric motor with an electrically switched two-speed transmission and a mechanical rear axle limited-slip differential. The lightweight high-performance battery is also located in the rear above the rear axle. This compact design results in numerous advantages. The electric motor acts directly on the rear axle and can therefore convert its power more directly into propulsion. This provides an extra boost when starting off, accelerating, or overtaking. As slip on the rear axle increases, the driving force of the electric motor is also transferred to the front wheels as required. The mechanical connection of the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive makes this possible via the cardan shaft and drive shafts of the front wheels. The positioning on the rear axle improves the weight and axle load distribution in the vehicle and thus forms the basis for convincing handling.

Inspired by Formula 1™, developed in Affalterbach: the AMG High Performance battery

The development of the lithium-ion energy storage is inspired by technologies proven in the Formula 1™ hybrid racing cars of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. The AMG High Performance battery offers high performance that can often be used one after the other. This increases the overall performance of the SL Roadster. Added to this is the rapid energy consumption and high power density. The high-performance battery offers a capacity of 6.1 kWh, 70 kW continuous power and 150 kW peak power. Charging takes place via the installed 3.7 kW on-board charger with alternating current at a charging station, wallbox or household socket. The battery is designed for fast power delivery and consumption and not for the longest possible range. Nevertheless, 13 kilometres of purely electric travel (EAER) enables a practical operating radius.

The basis for the high performance of the AMG 400-volt battery is direct cooling: a high-tech coolant flows around all 560 cells and cools them individually. Every battery needs a defined temperature for optimal power delivery. If the energy storage device becomes too cold or too hot, it temporarily loses noticeable power or must be turned down so as not to be damaged if the temperature is too high. A uniform temperature control of the battery therefore has a decisive influence on its performance, service life and safety.

Operating strategy: electrical power always available

The basic operating strategy is derived from the hybrid power pack of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 racing car. As in the premier class of motorsport, maximum propulsion is always available when the driver needs it – for example, to be able to accelerate powerfully out of corners or when overtaking. The electrical power can always be accessed and frequently reproduced through high recuperation performance and demand-based recharging. The independent battery concept enables the optimal compromise between maximum driving dynamics and efficiency. All components are perfectly co-ordinated with each other: the increase in performance can be experienced and measured immediately.

The eight AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes “Electric”, “Battery Hold”, “Comfort”, “Smoothness”, “Sport”, “Sport+”, “RACE”, and “Individual” are precisely tailored to the new drive technology. They offer a wide range of driving experiences – from efficient to dynamic. The driving programmes adapt important parameters such as the response of the drive and transmission, the steering characteristic, the chassis damping or the sound. The programmes can be selected using the AMG button and the central display in the centre console or the AMG steering wheel buttons.

The performance hybrid usually starts silently (“Silent Mode”) in the “Comfort” driving programme when the electric motor is switched on. The “Ready” icon in the instrument cluster signals that the vehicle is ready to drive. In addition, a powerful, sonorous, AMG-typical start-up sound is heard as acoustic feedback on the readiness to drive, which is radiated into the interior via the vehicle speakers. A light step on the accelerator pedal is enough and the AMG Performance Hybrid starts moving.

Recuperation can be selected in four stages

Because the high-performance battery is always in the optimal temperature window of around 45 degrees thanks to direct cooling, recuperation can also be optimised. Normally, a battery heats up a lot when the recuperation output is high, so energy recovery must be limited. Recuperation begins when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator pedal, i.e. in coasting mode without touching the brake pedal. This charges the battery and creates a braking torque. The wheel brakes are protected or, depending on the recuperation level and traffic situation, do not need to be activated at all.

The driver can select four different levels of recuperation power using the right AMG steering wheel button. This applies to all driving programmes except for “Smoothness”. In the highest level, so-called “one-pedal” driving is possible. Over 100 kW of power can be fed back into the battery. Another advantage of recuperation: the vehicle does not become faster when driving steeply downhill. The system works like an engine brake.

Visual modifications indicate the E PERFORMANCE drive

The exclusive identifying feature of the new top model in the SL series is the rear section. What’s new here is the integrated plug-in loading flap and the model name highlighted in red. There are also grooved trapezoidal twin tailpipe trims on the outside. The “E PERFORMANCE” fender badge on the side indicates the exclusive drive. As with the entire series, numerous paints from the MANUFAKTUR programme are also available for the hybrid version.

Driver-focused interior with extensive choice options

The interior serves the sporty target group as well as customers who value maximum comfort. The cockpit design right down to the portrait format display in the centre console is focused on the driver and impresses with a harmonious overall impression. The practical dimensional concept with 2+2 seats offers generous space in the interior.

One of many highlights in the interior is the electrically adjustable AMG sports seats. They combine good lateral support with high long-distance comfort. The optional AMG performance seats with integrated headrests and ventilation openings in the seat backs are even sportier. Three massage programmes ensure excellent long-distance comfort. The ENERGIZING Package Plus combines seating functions and lighting moods to create relaxing comfort programmes.

The large selection of seat covers reflects the range from comfortable to performance-oriented features. One- and two-tone Nappa leather is included, as is the particularly elegant MANUFAKTUR upholstery in Nappa leather with diamond quilting.

MBUX multimedia system with hybrid-specific displays

The MBUX multimedia system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) is intuitive to use and capable of learning. The SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE contains numerous AMG and hybrid-specific displays and functions. Exclusive menu items such as “AMG Performance” underline the sporty character. Hybrid technology can also be experienced visually: high-quality graphics visualise the power flow of the drive system. The speed, power, torque and temperature of the electric machine can also be called up.

    Active aerodynamics re-tuned

The active aerodynamics were also fine-tuned. It is adapted to electrified drive technology. The active aerodynamic element, which is hidden in the underbody in front of the engine, contributes to balanced driving behaviour. It is standard on the SL top model. This carbon profile is an exclusive AMG development and protected by patents. It reacts to the position of the AMG driving programmes and automatically extends downwards by around 40 millimetres at a speed of 80 km/h. This creates the so-called Venturi effect, which additionally sucks the car onto the road and reduces the lift on the front axle.

Another active component is the extendable rear spoiler seamlessly integrated into the boot lid. It changes its position depending on the driving condition. The AMG aerodynamics team has adapted the control software for the SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE to the higher performance and modified numerous parameters. They include the driving speed, the longitudinal and lateral acceleration, and the steering speed in the calculation. From speeds of 80 km/h, the spoiler adopts five new angular positions to either optimise driving stability or reduce air resistance.

AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation

Also standard is the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation. The displacement dampers, which can be adjusted in rebound and compression, also have semi-active, interconnected hydraulic elements. They replace the conventional torsion bar stabiliser. This technology makes it possible to reduce body roll movements and provide a wide range of driving programmes. The hydraulic connection of the damper chambers on all four wheels takes place via appropriate lines and the control valves within the adaptive dampers.

The connection of the four spring struts and the pressure regulation of the pump and switching valves allow a very wide roll spring rate while at the same time reducing rolling movements. To put it figuratively: every torsion bar from zero to rigid can be represented automatically. This increases comfort in everyday life because even unevenness on one side is compensated for individually. When cornering dynamically, the hydraulics also actively reduce camber loss. Thanks to the resulting high camber rigidity, the roadster steers very precisely.

When driving straight ahead, the system opens completely depending on the driving programme and driving situation. The system compensates for one-sided obstacles that would otherwise lead to rolling movements. Drivers and passengers experience a significantly more comfortable driving experience. The reduced rolling movements when cornering contribute equally to comfort and driving dynamics. The characteristics of the driving behaviour in the individual driving programmes can also be further differentiated between comfort and sport.

Active rear-axle steering combines agility and stability

The SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE is also equipped with active rear-axle steering as standard. Depending on the speed, the rear wheels steer either in the opposite direction (up to 100 km/h) or in the same direction (faster than 100 km/h) as the front wheels. The system therefore enables both agile and stable driving behaviour. These are characteristics that contrast with each other without rear-axle steering. Further advantages include easier vehicle control at the limit and less steering effort because the front wheel steering ratio is more direct.

Easy to control and stable: the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system

In keeping with the extreme performance values and the associated performance, the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system, with bronze-coloured 6-piston fixed calipers at the front and 1-piston floating calipers at the rear, comes as standard. Compared to AMG models with a pure combustion engine, it is larger in size: the carbon ceramic brake discs on the front axle measure 420 x 40 millimetres and on the rear axle 380 x 32 millimetres. The braking system impresses with very short braking distances as well as maximum stability and fading stability under heavy use. It also scores points with its long service life. The lightweight material saves additional weight and reduces unsprung masses.

  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate

As functional as its predecessor, as intelligent and customisable as never before: The new E‑Class Estate, model series 214, impresses in many areas. The design has also changed: The roofline is more dynamically designed compared to its predecessor, and at the same time the new E-Class Estate scores again with functionality and load compartment volume. Combined with the raked rear window, the overall appearance is progressive.

Like the Saloon before it, the Estate not only continues the long model history of the classic E-Class, but also bridges the gap to the avant-garde trendsetters from Mercedes-EQ with its new design. Balanced proportions are part of the appearance of a classic estate car. They are defined by the short front overhang, the long bonnet with powerdomes, the longer wheelbase and the balanced rear overhang.

With its distinctive side profile, the Estate clearly sets itself apart from the competition. The two character lines familiar from the Saloon create a powerfully stretched car body and give the Estate a sporty and stylish appearance. Sophisticated, three-dimensional and optimised down to the last detail, the surface finish exudes elegance.

A black panel-like surface connects the radiator grille with the headlamps. This insert in high-gloss black is visually reminiscent of the Mercedes-EQ models. The three-dimensionally designed radiator grille is either progressive or classic, depending on the equipment line. A chrome-framed radiator grille backlit by optical fibres is optionally available for all lines (Avantgarde, Exclusive and AMG Line). The new E-Class Estate features LED High Performance headlamps as standard. As an optional extra, DIGITAL LIGHT is available without and with a projection function. All headlamp variants offer a distinctive day and night design. As a typical feature of the brand, the daytime running lights take the shape of an eyebrow.

Precisely designed chrome elements as well as the progressively styled, two-part rear lamps characterise the rear-end design. Thanks to its large opening, the load compartment can be used in a variety of ways. The design team has reinterpreted the rear lamps in terms of their contours and inner workings. With great depth of detail and partly animated functions, the interior design contributes to the vehicle’s high value appeal. The unique star motif makes the day and night design of the rear lamps unmistakable. The two light sections in the side wall and boot lid are visually connected. This further emphasises the width of the rear. The reflectors have been relocated to the bumper. Because this allowed the load compartment opening to be particularly large, this increases the utility value on the one hand and makes the rear view look even wider on the other.

Even more spacious in the rear and the familiar high utility value

Compared to its predecessor, the E-Class Estate has increased in width by 28 millimetres. This gives the rear passengers even more space: The elbow room in the rear is 1519 millimetres – 25 millimetres more than before. The wheelbase has increased by 22 millimetres to 2961 millimetres. As a result, rear-seat passengers enjoy more knee room (84 millimetres; plus 9 millimetres) and leg room (934 millimetres; plus 15 millimetres). The load compartment can be expanded from 615 litres to up to 1830 litres. In the plug-in hybrid model, the luggage capacity is 460–1675 litres, and the load compartment is level there, too.

The seat backrests can be split and folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio. Operation is by two push buttons on the left and right side of the rear seat backrest. The Estate model features the EASY-PACK tailgate as standard. The tailgate opens and closes conveniently at the touch of a button: using the button on the ignition key, the switch in the driver’s door or the release handle on the tailgate. The retractable luggage cover and dividing net (both standard) have a two-piece design. Each has its own roller cassette.

MBUX Superscreen as a highlight of the interior design

The dashboard makes for the digital experience in the interior. If the E-Class Estate is equipped with the optional front passenger screen, the large glass surface of the MBUX Superscreen extends to the central display. Visually detached from this is the driver’s display in the driver’s field of vision. The models without a passenger display feature a large trim element that extends to the centre. Visually detached, the central display appears to float above the concave surface of this trim element.

The front section of the instrument panel is illuminated by the light strip of the Active Ambient Lighting. This runs in a wide arc from the windscreen, past the A-pillars and into the doors. This creates a generous feeling of space. An apparently free-floating control array in the upper section of the door panels matches the look of the glass surfaces of the screens.

The centre console is designed as a homogeneous unit and merges in a straight line into the lower section of the dashboard. At the front, a stowage compartment with lid and cup holders is integrated into the three-dimensionally shaped trim element. There is a soft padded armrest in the rear part of the centre console.

The door centre panel merges seamlessly into the armrest with a concave sweep. The front section here is designed as a metallic high-tech element. It serves as a grab and closing handle, and incorporates the switches for the power windows. Another highlight is the free-floating control array incorporating the door opener and the controls for the seat functions.

The contours of the seat surface and backrest flow elegantly from the inside to the outside, and appear to float above the base of the seat thanks to their layer design. Indented vertical lines follow the outer contour, widening out towards the top.

A plug-in hybrid is already available at launch

Thanks to systematic electrification and intelligent downsizing, the new E-Class sets new standards in efficiency. The combustion engines are four and six-cylinder units from the current modular Mercedes‑Benz engine family FAME (Family of Modular Engines). Accordingly, the engine range plays a major role in the flexibility of the international production network, with needs-based electrification.

In addition to turbocharging, both the diesel and petrol engines feature intelligent support from an Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG). They are therefore mild hybrids. Thanks to a new battery, the power of the electric motor has been increased from 15 to 17 kW and the boost torque to 205 Nm. Further mild hybrid models will follow.

With the E 300 e (combined fuel consumption, weighted (WLTP): 0.9-0.6 l/100 km, combined CO₂ emissions, weighted (WLTP): 20-13 g/km, combined power consumption, weighted (WLTP): 21.4-19.1 kWh/100 km) a plug-in hybrid is also available at market launch already. With an electric output of 95 kW (129 hp) and an all‑electric range of up to over 100 kilometres (WLTP), this model will on many days be on the road purely electrically, without the use of the petrol engine. More plug-in hybrids with diesel combustion engines will follow.

  • Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven Concept

Mercedes-Benz presents a new sports car study. The Vision One-Eleven combines a highly dynamic design language with innovative all-electric powertrain technology. The supercar silhouette is characterised by skilful execution of the signature Mercedes-Benz One-Bow design that is a marker of its 21st‑century style. The development of this design underscores the positioning of the Mercedes-Benz brand, which stands for ICONIC LUXURY. Its technical highlights include the extremely powerful and highly efficient axial-flux motor developed by electric motor specialist YASA. The British company has been a 100-percent subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG since July 2021.

The Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven is inspired by the tradition of the legendary C 111 experimental vehicles from the 1960s and 70s, which were used to test revolutionary Wankel and turbodiesel engines. They were also prototypes for testing polymer-based bodyshells. The extremely (aero)dynamic mid-engine sports cars are considered design icons of their era, not least due to their distinctive gullwing doors and eye-catching orange-and-black paintwork.

“Our goal at Mercedes-Benz is not to do styling – our goal is to create icons. To me, that makes the difference between mainstream design and luxury. Design icons like the Type 300 SL and C 111 – both with gullwing doors – are part of our DNA. These legendary vehicles were major inspirations for the iconic design of the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven. This is beauty and the extraordinary united in one vision of the future. Our all-electric vision show car is the modern-day interpretation of the C 111, which was avant-garde at the time. The element of surprise comes from its exceptionally clean, purist and, at the same time, extremely muscular proportions. This iconic clarity is also reflected in the interior. The equally sensual but minimalist design language stands for ICONIC LUXURY by Mercedes-Benz.”
Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer, Mercedes-Benz Group AG

“The Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven combines breathtaking design with groundbreaking powertrain technology. Like its historical namesake, it explores new paths for the future of sporting performance. At the heart of the compact and extremely efficient powertrain is the innovative YASA axial-flux high-tech electric motor. It offers a motorsport-like power output from a considerably smaller package. This makes the YASA axial-flux motor ideal for electric high-performance vehicles. Combined with the liquid-cooled cylindrical-cell battery with Formula-1 inspired cell chemistry, the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven is yet another proof point for the broad performance spectrum encompassed by our four-pronged development strategy for electric drive.”
Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer

    The exterior

The body of the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven centres on skilful execution of the One-Bow design. From the low-slung front end to the muscular hind quarters, it runs in a smooth bow that endows the just 1,170 mm-high vehicle silhouette with an extremely sculptural feel. This harmonises perfectly with the copper-orange alubeam paintwork. It provides an unmistakeable reference to the distinctive colour of the C 111 without adopting it one-to-one. The colour of the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven is considerably more powerful than that of the C 111 and also changes with the light. It conveys not only a sense of quality but also a certain extravagance.

Further notable features of the side view include the flush-fit gullwing doors and the side windows, which are opaque from the outside and camouflaged by a pixelated pattern. Yet another is the large-diameter wheels inserted seamlessly into the wheel arches beneath voluminous flared wings. This reinforces the impression of an uncompromisingly sporty and aerodynamically refined driving machine. The wheel design incorporates powerfully structured elements evocative of electric motor windings – a clear indicator of the state-of-the-art, all-electric powertrain underpinning the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven. They stand in spirited contrast to the vehicle’s iconic, minimalist and smooth surface design, which is more akin to a sculptural art piece. This contrast is typical of the X-factors the brand applies to its design thinking and a distinctive feature of the Vision One-Eleven.

Another striking contrast arises through the very low-slung front and rear skirts finished in matte black. The two deeply scooped aerodynamic elements are visually connected by two blade profiles in the same colour running along the flanks beneath the sills. These profiles feature piercings that are backlit in blue. The functional aerodynamic elements also serve as a further design reference to the C 111, which is painted black on the lower portion of its bodyshell. The dark “keel line” of the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven generates an impression of seamless transition between the vehicle and the ground beneath it that is even more powerful than that of the C 111. The form of the car appears fused with the road surface.

    The front-end design

From the frontal aspect, too, the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven is powerfully evocative of the C 111. In detail, however, there are striking differences: One stand-out example is the distinctive front end, which on both vehicles consists of a low-lying rectangular element with rounded ends left and right. On the C 111, this is a closed plastic element with a honeycomb structure, fitted with round foglamps. The corresponding part on the Vision One-Eleven appears very similar at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, it reveals itself as a high-tech feature. The panel is a flexible external display with a 3D pixelated look. It interprets the C 111’s characteristic round lights in digitised form and can also convey messages to other road users.

In contrast to the C 111, the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven bears a U-shaped and strongly profiled front apron. Above the slender light band, both forefather and descendant show further similarities, most notably the black air intakes on the bonnet.

    The rear-end design

The rear-end of the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven is likewise dominated by a powerfully profiled diffuser. Spanning the breadth above it is a display that echoes the shape of its counterpart at the front end and features the same pixelated structure in the red taillights. Similar to the blade profiles along the sides, blue lighting effects are also visible at the rear. The inner face of the wheels is fitted with circular lighting elements.

    The interior design

Inside, the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven presents the first sports car interior with a lounge concept. It reflects the paradigm shift from self-driven sports car to autonomous electric vehicle within the super sportscar segment and unites two completely different states of being. In race mode with the backrest upright and the compact driver-oriented touchscreen, the interior becomes that of a minimalist driving machine. Conversely, in lounge mode, the seats are fully integrated into the interior sculpture, which merges sills, centre tunnel and luggage compartment into a single unit.

This creates a whole new, exceptionally airy spatial concept. In contrast to previous mid-engine sports cars, it takes advantage of the compact proportions of electric motors to extend the interior rearwards. Consequently, the lounge-like interior invites occupants to take their time and relax – a completely new approach for the sports car of the future.

Futuristic and luxurious ambience with contrasting colours

The interior design of the Vision One-Eleven reflects future luxury based on a progressive colour concept and extraordinary material combinations. The richly contrasting colours and materials attract attention at first glance: Large surfaces such as the dashboard are upholstered in white fabric displaying a tech-look honeycomb structure. The material is made from 100-percent recycled polyester. Other elements such as the armrests on the sills and centre console, as well as the rear parcel shelf beneath the expansive rear windscreen, are clad in bright orange leather. This creates a smooth transition from interior to luggage compartment. The sustainably processed leather was tanned using coffee bean husks. Polished aluminium in the steering-wheel spokes and inlaid as straps across the armrests underscore the tech look and feel. The same applies to the brake and accelerator pedals, both of which are made from polished aluminium and floor mounted.

Otherwise, the interior equipment in the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven has been reduced to a minimum. Like the exterior, the task here too was to keep the number of add-on features to a bare minimum. The seats are good examples as they don’t follow the classic format. Instead, the seat cushions are integrated flush-fit into the floor. This creates the initial impression of the bucket seat in a Formula 1 race car. The orange four‑point harness and its high-gloss polished buckle further reinforce the sporting character.

Nevertheless, the innovative seats combine this sporting feel with luxurious comfort because, unlike in a Formula 1 race car, the angle of the backrest can be adjusted. The silver shimmer of their diamond-quilted upholstery is another eyecatcher that underscores the first-class interior ambience. Between the seats is a compact centre console, freestanding in space like a work of art.

The only highly complex feature in the interior is the leather-clad steering wheel, which is fitted with various functional controls and state-of-the-art touch elements. This is complemented by a compact touchscreen with high-resolution display mounted to the side of the steering wheel and angled towards the driver. It shows all relevant vehicle information as required.

Fusion of analogue and digital – UI/UX with retro-futuristic pixel-look

The contrast to the modern interior is provided by the slender pixel display spanning the entire breadth of the dashboard, picking up on the form of the front and rear light bands. Here too, the pixel structure is intentionally coarse, which gives the information displayed – such as the current speed – a strikingly bold appearance. Moreover, the 3D pixel display shows digital art pieces as a coarsely rasterised stream of QR codes in the style of “early digital” news tickers. This is done with the help of glass pixels that show a changing colour gradient depending on the viewing angle. The corresponding real image then appears razor sharp on the high-resolution screen next to the steering wheel.

This combination of vastly differing representations of the same image embodies a further interpretation of the MBUX Hyperscreen with a focus on flexible interfaces. The retro-futuristic, 8-bit look thus creates an additional X-factor. The development in the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven reinforces the increasing fusion of physical and digital.

Creating an experimental spatial user interface – augmented reality takes the user experience to a new level

For the premiere of the Vision One-Eleven, Mercedes-Benz designers have created a visionary user experience with the aid of augmented reality (AR), setting it inside a virtual prototype of the Vision One‑Eleven interior. As soon as the driver dons the Magic Leap 2 augmented reality headset, their experience is enriched with high-definition digital content that is contextually integrated into their surroundings. It creates a seamless spatial blend of physical interior and digital user interface beyond the screen. In effect, the entire car becomes the user interface.

Mercedes-Benz has been exploring the benefits of AR since the launch of the F015 concept car in 2015. The AR UI in this new car presents a vision of the future that works on two levels: the information attached to the dashboard and information placed in the environment inside and outside the car. This marks the next step from screen-based UI with Mercedes-Benz intuitive zero-layer technology to an AR UI that arranges zero‑layer elements around the user in space. Elements include modules, 3D icons and the navigation map. The control interface around the dashboard and steering wheel is also augmented with additional contextualised information attached to actual objects such as buttons or switches.

The 180-degree AR view incorporates the world outside the virtual prototype – fusing the car effortlessly with its surroundings and placing the driver at the centre. Map elements are projected into the environment, which is enriched with further information such as places of interests or hidden hazards such as roadworks beyond a bend. With this X-ray view, the system enhances situational awareness by blending out unimportant details to create an uncluttered image of relevant input. Elements that obstruct the driver’s line of sight – such as the A-pillar, doors or even the bonnet – then appear “transparent”. Mercedes-Benz designers and experts worked with the technical specialists at Magic Leap to develop and refine the AR experience showcased in the Vision One-Eleven using the highly advanced Magic Leap 2 AR glasses.

The spatial user interface is a beacon for a Mercedes-Benz user experience that is unencumbered by technology. It is part of a wider vision that looks towards extended reality, whereby technology and hardware cease to be the focal point; instead becoming fully integrated and seamless facilitators of user needs and wishes.

Innovative electric powertrain – high-performance axial-flux motor and all-new battery technology

Technology highlights include a new battery concept featuring high-performance liquid-cooled cylindrical cells with a novel cell chemistry. Once more, the extensive knowledge of the motorsport experts from Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrain in Brixworth found its way into this promising concept for future performance-oriented batteries. Aside from that, the Vision One-Eleven features two exceptionally powerful and advanced axial-flux motors from YASA. Mercedes-Benz is developing this technology together with YASA to large scale production maturity for its next-generation electric drives. YASA is a British electric-motor specialist based in Oxford and has been a 100-percent subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG since July 2021. The company has thus secured access to a unique future technology that has the potential to take electric mobility to a new level of performance.

“Axial-flux motors are significantly lighter and more compact, yet more powerful than comparable radial-flux motors currently used in 99 percent of all electric cars. In an axial-flux motor, the electromagnetic flow runs parallel to the motor’s rotational axis, which is highly efficient. In a radial-flux motor, the flow runs perpendicular to the rotational axis. Compared to radial-flux motors, they have considerably higher and more enduring power reserves, which delivers a whole new level of performance.”
Tim Woolmer, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of YASA

Alongside its power and torque density, another major benefit is the narrow package, which reduces both its weight and dimensions. The weight of an axial-flux motor is just one third of that of current electric motors with the same power output. At the same time, it requires just one-third of the space occupied by a radial-flux motor. This opens up completely new options for engineers as well as new freedoms in the design of an electric vehicle as demonstrated by the Vision One-Eleven.

The future generation of YASA axial-flux motors will be produced at the Mercedes-Benz Berlin-Marienfelde plant. The motors manufactured there will be at the heart of the forthcoming powertrain for the performance segment.

  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class

For 75+ years, the E-Class has been the benchmark for mid-range luxury sedans. In 2023, Mercedes-Benz will introduce the new E-Class, which will lead the way in shifting from combustion engines to electric power. It will also provide a fully digital user experience, thanks to its updated electronics architecture. European sales partners will receive the first 214 series sedans in the fall of 2023.

    Exterior design

The new E-Class has classic three-box sedan proportions, with a short front overhang, long hood, and a set-back greenhouse. Its design is rounded off with a well-proportioned rear overhang.

A black panel connects the radiator grille and headlamps, reminiscent of the Mercedes-EQ models. The radiator grille has a 3D design and is either progressive or classic depending on the equipment line. LED headlights come standard, with DIGITAL LIGHT available as an optional extra. The daytime running lights take the shape of an eyebrow and powerdomes accentuate the hood.

The side view highlights the harmonious proportions and distinctive “cab-backward” design, with optional flush-fitting door handles and two character lines emphasizing the sporty character.

At the back, the two-section LED lights have a new contour and special design, with a star motif in both light units providing a special day and night design.

    Interior design

The interior of the E-Class offers a digital experience with its dashboard. The MBUX Superscreen extends to the central display if the optional front passenger screen is equipped. The driver’s display is visually detached and located in the driver’s field of vision. For models without a passenger display, a large trim element extends to the centre, and the central display appears to float above the concave surface of this trim element.

The light strip of the Active Ambient Lighting illuminates the front section of the instrument panel in a wide arc from the windscreen to the doors. This creates a feeling of spaciousness. The upper section of the door panels has a free-floating control array that matches the look of the glass surfaces of the screens.

The centre console is a homogeneous unit and merges straight into the lower section of the dashboard. A stowage compartment with lid and cup holders is integrated into the three-dimensionally shaped trim element at the front. The rear part of the centre console has a soft padded armrest.

The armrest and door centre panel blend seamlessly with a curved design. The front section is a metallic high-tech element that acts as a handle and has the power window switches. The seat surface and backrest have indented vertical lines that give a floating appearance.

The E-Class is known for its spaciousness. The driver has five millimetres more headroom than the previous model. The longer wheelbase provides rear passengers with extra leg and knee room, and elbow width has also increased. Luggage capacity is up to 540 litres.

The new E-Class is highly efficient thanks to systematic electrification and downsizing. Half of all models will be plug-in hybrids, with three out of six versions combining the benefits of combustion engines and electric cars. The current engine family FAME is used to produce four and six-cylinder engines, which are flexible enough for electrification. The diesel and petrol engines are both mild hybrids with turbocharging and support from an integrated starter-generator. The electric motor has been improved, with increased power and boost torque thanks to a new battery.

At the launch of the E-Class in Europe, the range includes both combustion engines and mild hybrids.

They can hear the music (with Dolby Atmos® technology if desired), feel it through sound resonating transducers in the optional Burmester® 4D surround sound system, and now “see” it through visualisation on the light strip of the Active Ambient Lighting (optional extra). The visualisation applies throughout the car and creates different lighting moods based on the rhythm of the music.

The front passenger has an impressive entertainment experience with an optional screen that can display dynamic content such as TV or video streaming even when the driver is looking over. The display is switchable, and the advanced camera-based privacy function reduces brightness to prevent driver distraction.

New third-party apps plus selfie and video camera

Mercedes-Benz software experts have developed a new layer of compatibility that allows third-party apps to be installed. Several popular apps are available at launch, including TikTok, Angry Birds, Webex, Zoom, and Vivaldi browser. The ZYNC entertainment portal is also available as an optional extra, offering video streaming, on-demand content, interactive experiences, local video programmes, sports, news, games, and more on the central and passenger displays through a single user interface.

The MBUX Superscreen comes with a new selfie and video camera on top of the dashboard, enabling drivers to participate in online video conferences through Webex or take personal photos and videos when the vehicle is stationary.

The intelligent voice control system has been improved, allowing for activation without the keyword “Hey Mercedes” using the “Just Talk” function. The display will show a red microphone symbol, indicating that the vehicle is ready and waiting for commands.

    The routines

Mercedes-Benz is incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to learn and automate the comfort functions frequently used by car occupants under similar conditions. This will result in a personalised automation called ‘routine.’ The development of this innovation is in an advanced stage. Customers buying the new E-Class can use standard templates for routines or create their own. The occupants can connect different functions and conditions to create personalized routines, such as “turn on the seat heating and adjust the ambient lighting to warm orange if the temperature inside is below twelve degrees Celsius.”

ENERGIZING COMFORT and THERMOTRONIC with Digital Vent Control (both optional)

Mercedes-Benz has a comprehensive wellness program called ENERGIZING COMFORT which includes mobilizing massage, activating light, and soothing sounds. The ENERGIZING COACH provides individual recommendations for this program. In addition, the E-Class introduces a new feature that helps alleviate travel sickness symptoms. In the future, the ENERGIZING COACH will have a bio-feedback function for stress relief with breathing exercises. With the optional THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control, the Digital Vent Control enhances comfort by adjusting the front air vents to the desired ventilation scenario automatically. This feature can also be adjusted manually.

Numerous driving assistance systems, some of which have been developed further

The E-Class comes standard with various driving assistance systems, including Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, ATTENTION ASSIST, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Parking Package with reversing camera, and Speed Limit Assist. The driver can see the status and activity of the driving assistance systems as a full-screen view in the Assistance mode of the driver’s display.

ATTENTION ASSIST now has a driver distraction warning in the optional 3D driver display, which detects if the driver’s eyes are not focused on the road for several seconds and warns the driver with both sound and visual cues. If the driver continues to be distracted, there will be a second warning and a continuous warning tone, and the Active Emergency Stop Assist can initiate an emergency stop.

The optional Driving Assistance Plus package includes Active Steering Assist, which helps with lane-keeping, and allows the E-Class to automatically restart after longer standstills in city traffic or on country roads. Additionally, if Active Steering Assist is not available due to unclear lane markings, the driver will receive a warning via vibrations in the steering wheel.

Sophisticated body concept and coordinated restraint systems

Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class relies on a safety concept that uses a sturdy passenger cell and crash structures that can deform in a specific way. The restraint systems, like the airbags and seat belts, are designed to adapt to the circumstances and offer optimal protection to the occupants in case of an accident.

Apart from the standard airbags for the driver and front passenger, a knee airbag for the driver’s side is included to shield the legs from hitting the instrument panel or steering column in a severe frontal collision. The standard window airbags reduce the risk of head injuries from side window impacts or external objects. In case of a severe side collision, the window airbag on the side of the impact expands like a curtain from the A- to the C-pillar over both the front and rear side windows. If the car detects a rollover, the window airbags can deploy on both sides. Optional side airbags can cover the thorax area, including the outer rear seats, in case of a severe side impact.

Mercedes-Benz has also equipped the E-Class with a centre airbag (depending on the country), standard pyrotechnic belt tensioners and force limiters on all outer seats to ensure maximum safety in case of an accident.

    Resource-conserving materials

The E-Class uses eco-friendly materials in several components. The basic seat upholstery is a blend of recycled materials and undyed alpaca wool. The seat foam incorporates certified recycled raw materials through a “mass balance approach”. These materials have similar properties to those produced from crude oil, but help reduce the need for fossil resources while maintaining quality.

    Neutral CO2 balance

Mercedes-Benz achieved a neutral CO2 balance in all its global plants in 2022. The company uses only renewable energy sources for the externally sourced electricity, making it CO2-free. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz plans to boost the amount of renewable energy generated at its plants, with a focus on increasing photovoltaics at the Sindelfingen location by the end of 2024. The company is also committed to reducing water usage and waste production at the Sindelfingen location.

The interior is crafted from black leather and Alcantara with great attention to detail by the in-house upholstery shop of BRABUS.

The car is priced at 370,550 euros MSRP (export price in Germany excluding 19 percent VAT).

BRABUS has been renowned for providing superior engines with exceptional performance and durability for over 45 years. The new BRABUS 900 SUPERBLACK is powered by one of the most powerful engines in the company’s history, which is entirely overhauled in the company’s state-of-the-art engine shop in Bottrop.

The BRABUS ROCKET 900 V8 twin-turbo engine formula is simple: increased displacement means increased power. The cylinder volume of the eight-cylinder engine is expanded from 3,982 cc to 4,407 cc (243 to 269 cu in) by enlarging the cylinder bore to 84 millimeters (3.3 in), along with the installation of forged pistons and high-performance connecting rods. A billet custom crankshaft extends the stroke to 100 millimeters (3.9 in).

To generate an extra 212 kW / 288 hp (284 bhp) compared to the standard engine, which produces 450 kW / 612 hp (603 bhp), the turbocharging system was also redesigned. Two special BRABUS turbochargers with larger compressor units and reinforced axial bearings create a peak boost pressure of 1.4 bar. The driver can experience a thrilling blow-off noise when lifting off the gas, thanks to a pair of BRABUS BoostXtra valves.

To supply the BRABUS ROCKET 900 V8 twin-turbo engine with more air, the radiator grille integrates exposed-carbon air intakes. Three special high-pressure pumps are also added to modify the fuel supply. The engine cover made from red exposed carbon completes the look of the V8.

The exhaust side is equipped with special downpipes and metal catalysts, and a stainless high-performance exhaust system with actively controlled butterfly valves manages the exhaust note. The four BRABUS tailpipes made from a combination of carbon and titanium look stunning.

To ensure the engine performs exceptionally, the BRABUS power unit engineers and electronics specialists conducted extensive testing on state-of-the-art test benches and on the road. The precisely programmed maps also comply with the stringent EURO 6D ISC-FCM emissions standard. The BRABUS Tuning Warranty, which lasts for three years or 100,000-km / 62,000-mile, guarantees the reliability of a BRABUS engine.

MOTUL is the technology partner supplying the hi-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain of the BRABUS 900 SUPERBLACK. The SUV produces an outstanding peak power of 662 kW / 900 hp (888 bhp) at a low 6,200 rpm, and has a gigantic peak torque of 1,250 Nm (922 lb-ft) available at a low 2,900 rpm. To protect the drivetrain, the vehicle electronically limits the torque to 1,050 Nm (774 lb-ft). With its all-wheel drive, the SUV weighing around 2.6 metric tons can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.6 seconds, and depending on the selected tire/wheel combination, has a top speed of either 310 or 330 km/h (192 or 205 mph). The aerodynamics, tires and suspension were also specifically designed to match the tremendous performance potential of the SUV. BRABUS created exposed-carbon bodywork components that are aerodynamically efficient and give the SUV sportier looks.

The BRABUS front spoiler is attached to the lower part of the fascia to give the SUV a unique and distinguished look. Additionally, this aerodynamic component’s design helps to reduce front-axle lift at high speeds, which improves handling stability. The side air intakes in the front bumper are upgraded with customized air ducting. The SUV’s appearance is further enhanced by the BRABUS air intakes in the radiator grille, backlit BRABUS emblem, and white signature stripes. The BRABUS model badges on the rear and sides of the SUV also contrast with the dark SUPERBLACK outfit.

The wheel arches are given a sportier appearance with tailor-made BRABUS exposed-carbon trim. At the rear, the BRABUS diffuser insert perfectly showcases the four BRABUS tailpipes of the sports exhaust. The black BRABUS roof spoiler made from PUR-R-RIM matches the vehicle’s color.

The BRABUS Monoblock Z “PLATINUM EDITION” 24-inch wheels are perfect for the supercar’s wheel arches. These wheels have a lightweight and sturdy design thanks to CAD technology and advanced production processes. Continental, the technology partner, provides high-performance tires for the wheels. The front axle has 10Jx24 rims with 295/35 R 24 tires, while the rear axle has 12-inch wide wheels with 335/30 R 24 tires. The top speed is electronically limited to 310 km/h (192 mph) for safety purposes, but can be increased to 330 km/h (205 mph) with optional 23-inch wheels.

To improve handling and safety, the suspension engineers developed a custom control module for the air suspension, which lowers the ride height by 25 millimeters (1.0 inch) compared to the base car. The lowered suspension also gives the car a sportier look.

BRABUS has been renowned for its outstanding interior design for decades. The supercar features a BRABUS MASTERPIECE interior that matches the car’s exterior finish. The luxurious and comfortable cabin is crafted with meticulous attention to detail and features a blend of soft and skin-friendly black leather and Alcantara. The upholstery is styled with precise shell-shaped quilting on the seat surfaces and inner door segments. The leather sections have perforations that are applied with pinpoint precision, and the floor of the vehicle cabin and entire trunk are quilted in the same design. The sun visors embossed with the “77” logo commemorate the year when BRABUS was founded.

The new supercar’s interior has many carbon components, including parts of the steering wheel rim, dashboard bezels, door panels, and center console. The scuff plates have a classy BRABUS logo that changes color with the ambient interior lighting. The controls, air vents, speaker grilles, and surrounds are coated in matt ‘Shadow Grey’ glazing, and sporty accessories include aluminum paddle shifters, pedals, and door-lock pins with black glazing.

The BRABUS 900 SUPERBLACK, which is a modified version of the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4MATIC+, has the following fuel efficiency ratings: 16.2 liters per 100 kilometers (14.5 miles per gallon) in the city, 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers (24.8 miles per gallon) on the highway, and 11.9 liters per 100 kilometers (19.8 miles per gallon) combined. Its combined CO2 emissions are 273.5 grams per kilometer, and it has an efficiency class D.

The brand lettering differentiates the steering wheel, and it is illuminated on the stainless steel door sills to welcome all passengers.

    Resource-saving luxury

Mercedes-Benz AG has introduced vegetable-tanned leather in its Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV model. Coffee bean shells are used for tanning, and water used in the process is recycled in a closed circuit system before being released back into natural bodies of water. The fatliquoring agents used in tanning are also plant-based, and the leather is not preserved with salt, which saves about 45 kilograms of salt per vehicle. By-products from the tanning process are upcycled into new products such as compostable flowerpots, insulating foams, and decking boards. Coffee farmers benefit from selling the coffee bean shells.

Mercedes-Benz has set strict criteria for sustainably processed real leather, including no illegal deforestation in the leather supply chain and no grazing areas that contribute to the loss of natural forests. The entire supply chain from farm to end product must be disclosed, and the leather must come from animals kept in a species-appropriate manner. Only vegetable or chrome-free tanning agents may be used, and eco-balance must be carried out across all stages of the value-added process.

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV uses resource-saving materials, including secondary steel and recycled aluminium. The aim is to at least halve CO2 emissions per passenger car in the new vehicle fleet over the entire life cycle by the end of this decade compared to 2020 levels. From 2039, the new car and van fleet should be net carbon-neutral over their life cycle and the entire value chain.

    The rear

The rear of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV provides a self-contained and comfortable atmosphere for passengers. The Executive seats come with ventilation, massage function, neck and shoulder heating, and calf massage. There is also a Chauffeur Package that moves the front passenger seat forward when the rear passenger reclines. Massage programmes are available with ENERGIZING COMFORT.

The redesigned First-Class Rear equipment includes a wooden trim in the rear storage compartment, which matches the trim on the front seat backrests and between the rear seats. A discreet Maybach emblem is projected onto the floor. Two thermal cup holders, a shelf for the MBUX rear tablet, four USB-C ports, and two HDMI interfaces are also included. Folding tables, a cooling compartment, and silver-plated champagne goblets can be added upon request.

Diverse possibilities for individual lighting moods

Each C-pillar of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV has a designer lamp integrated into it. The adaptive rear lighting system provides additional reading lights in the grab handles and light strips in the headlining. The brightness, size, and position of the light spots can be adjusted, providing a wide range between precise work and relaxed lounge lighting. The light color follows the human daily rhythm but can also be manually adjusted. The Ambient Lighting runs throughout the vehicle, up to the roof liner and behind the rear seats. Active Ambient Lighting has 253 individually controllable LEDs and 64 individually selectable colors, including Maybach-specific color schemes. The lighting options offer diverse choices for individual moods and reinforce the cocooning effect. The passengers are welcomed with a special light play that sets the scene for the rear doors.

    The air quality

ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL Plus comes with a HEPA filter to ensure good air quality. An air quality sensor supports the fresh air recirculation switch. The HEPA filter effectively cleans the incoming outside air of fine dust, small particles and pollen. Both the HEPA filter and the cabin filter contain activated carbon that filters sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and odours. Fresh air is regularly circulated, and the interior air can be cleaned before boarding through pre-air conditioning. MBUX displays particulate matter values inside and outside the vehicle in detail in its own air quality menu. The system can also recommend closing the side windows or sunroof if the quality of outside air is low.

Active scenting, which is part of the standard AIR BALANCE Package, is also available. No. 12 MOOD Ebony, an exclusive scent, was created for the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV. Stimulating sandalwood and spicy notes combine to create a unique composition that aims to seduce rather than please.

    The sound experience

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV has a standard Burmester® 4D surround sound system that offers an exceptional audio experience. The system includes 15 speakers, two bass speakers in the front footwell, one midrange and one tweeter in each door, two 3D speakers in the headliner, two surround speakers in the luggage compartment cover, and a center speaker in the instrument panel. There are also two exciters in each seat that make the listening experience four-dimensional by directly reproducing structure-borne noise in the seats.

Passengers can enjoy the Dolby Atmos immersive audio experience, which gives music more space, clarity, and depth. It makes it possible to place discrete audio elements in a three-dimensional sound field and adapt them to any playback environment, providing the clarity equal to the artist’s original studio composition.

Passengers in the front and rear can also apply the 4D sound to the audio content of their headphones, and the sound can be individually adjusted for each MBUX user profile. Additionally, the driving sound named “Aerial Grace” was created for the all-electric Mercedes-Maybach model, and it can be heard in the interior. It is interactive and reacts to a dozen different parameters, including accelerator pedal position, speed, and recuperation, providing an acoustic experience. The sounds are calculated in real-time on the amplifier of the Burmester® 4D surround sound system and played back by the loudspeakers.

    Noise comfort

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV enhances the noise and vibration comfort of the EQS SUV from Mercedes-EQ. The electric drive train is encapsulated at the front and rear, and the support frame on the front axle and drive units are doubly decoupled via rubber mounts. The SUV also features acoustic foams in selected body shell profiles and ramps in the underbody paneling, which reduce noise from grit in the wheel arches.

The measures taken for noise, vibration, and harshness are mainly focused on the rear of the SUV. A transverse bulkhead covered with ARTICO man-made leather seals off the trunk up to the lower edge of the rear window, providing effective noise suppression. The new Disconnect Unit (DCU) automatically decouples the electric motor on the front axle to increase the range, contributing to noise reduction. Additional insulation materials and acoustically effective laminated glass panes are also used.

Various wind deflection measures on the panorama roof, such as wind deflectors, covers, and seals with improved geometry, ensure a high level of noise comfort. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV provides maximum noise comfort in the rear, making it perfect for enjoying music or simply relaxing in silence. The rear passengers can also adjust how much of the surroundings they want to perceive with the electrically operated roller blinds on the rear side windows.

    The suspension

The driving comfort of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV meets the highest standards. The AIRMATIC air suspension comes with continuously adjustable damping ADS+ and is a standard feature. The vehicle level can be raised by up to 35 millimetres to increase ground clearance. Standard rear-axle steering enables a turning circle of 11.0 metres. Additionally, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV has the special MAYBACH drive programme for maximum driving comfort for the rear passengers. It ensures minimal body movements under the rear seats and comes as a standard setting, replacing the classic COMFORT programme. The vehicle also includes the DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes ECO, SPORT, OFFROAD and INDIVIDUAL.

    Technical data

  • BRABUS 900 DEEP BLUE Mercedes-AMG G63

BRABUS built the BRABUS 900 DEEP BLUE in Bottrop using the latest Mercedes-AMG G 63. They gave the bodywork a custom “DEEP BLUE” paint finish, which was specially developed for BRABUS and inspired by the deep sea. The paint job includes all chrome and plastic components on the body.

The supercar’s appearance is characterized by the BRABUS WIDESTAR widebody version, which makes the latest G-Class model look more massive and ten centimeters (4 in) wider than the base vehicle. The bodywork also includes special fascias for the front and rear, which give the car a sporty appearance. Carbon elements such as the hood cowl, radiator grille surround, side air vents, exterior mirror housings, and rear wing complete the athletic outfit.

The BRABUS designers paid attention to detail, even with the BRABUS 900 logos at the rear, which were adorned with carbon inlays.

The hi-tech 24-inch wheels on the DEEP BLUE supercar fit perfectly within the BRABUS WIDESTAR fender flares. The ten-spoke rims are the forged BRABUS Monoblock Z “PLATINUM EDITION” and are painted high-gloss black. The front wheels, which are 10Jx24 in size and have 295/30 ZR 24 high-performance tires, make full use of the widened wheel arches. The rear axle has 12Jx24 rims with 355/25 ZR 24 tires.

BRABUS worked with KW to develop the BRABUS Ride Control aluminum coilover suspension, which is specifically designed for high-performance street tires. The front-axle struts and rear-axle shock absorbers with integrated heat sinks are milled from a solid piece. The ride height of the supercar can be lowered up to 45 millimeters (1.8 in) and the damping can be set to comfortable or sporty using the Dynamic Select switch in the cockpit.

BRABUS is known for their high-performance engines, and the BRABUS 900 DEEP BLUE is no exception. Its BRABUS 900 ROCKET V8 twin-turbo engine produces an impressive 231 kW / 315 hp (310 bhp) more than the stock engine of the G 63, showcasing BRABUS’ commitment to power, torque, and durability.

To achieve more power, BRABUS increases the cylinder volume of the eight-cylinder, four-valve engine from 3,982 cc to 4,407 cc by enlarging the cylinder bore to 84 millimeters (3.3 in) and using accordingly sized forged pistons. The stroke is lengthened to exactly 100 millimeters (3.9 in) with a precision-balanced, billet custom crankshaft and forged high-performance connecting rods.

The turbocharging system is also extensively revised to realize the intended power increase. Two special BRABUS turbochargers with larger compressor unit and special core assembly with reinforced axial bearing produce a peak boost pressure of 1.4 bar. Two custom BRABUS BoostXtra valves provide a thrilling blow-off noise when the driver lifts off the gas.

BRABUS modified the engine’s downpipes, increasing their diameter to 76 millimeters and adding metal catalysts. The stainless-steel exhaust system has two tailpipes on each side of the vehicle, and a carbon fiber embellisher surrounds them with an integrated red ROCKET Launch Ambience Light. The active sound management system produces an exciting V8 engine sound that can be switched between a loud ‘Sport’ mode and a quieter ‘Coming Home’ mode with the push of a button on the center console.

The intake system of the powerful engine was significantly modified to ensure sufficient air supply. Special high-pressure pumps were installed to optimize fuel supply. The V8 engine was visually enhanced by a BRABUS engine cover made from red carbon.

The BRABUS power unit engineers and electronics specialists conducted thorough bench tests and test drives to achieve outstanding performance, exemplary smooth-running, maximum durability, and emission figures that comply with the strict EURO VI+ emissions standards. To ensure maximum operational reliability, BRABUS exclusively uses MOTUL high-performance lubricants.

The extensive development work that went into the BRABUS 900 ROCKET EDITION is evident in its exceptional performance. It boasts an impressive output of 662 kW / 900 hp (888 bhp) at a low 6,200 rpm, as well as a massive torque of 1,250 Nm (922 lb-ft) available at just 2,900 rpm, making it a leader in its class. However, to protect the drivetrain, the peak torque in the vehicle is limited electronically to 1,050 Nm (774 lb-ft).

These impressive numbers mean that the more than 2.5 metric tons all-wheel-drive SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.7 seconds, delivering sports car performance. The top speed is electronically limited to 280 km/h (174 mph) to protect the tires.

The automotive refinement specialist’s interior designers created an exclusive BRABUS MASTERPIECE interior for this supercar. It features slate grey leather highlighted with blue BRABUS labels and elements such as controls, air vents, speaker grilles, and surrounds, which also have blue glazing.

The exquisite interior appointments show the attention to detail invested in the work of the BRABUS upholstery shop. For instance, the seat surfaces and parts of the door panels have precise, shell-shaped quilting, and the leather sections are perforated with pinpoint precision. The floor mats and trunk, which is also covered in the finest leather, have the same quilting pattern.

The sporty nature of the BRABUS 900 DEEP BLUE is accentuated by carbon surrounds and handles in the cockpit with a high-gloss, sealed finish. The exclusive elements in the interior include aluminum pedals and door lock pins with blue glazing, carbon scuff plates with backlit BRABUS logo that changes colors according to the ambient lighting, and special BRABUS door hinges that allow wider opening for easier access to the rear seats. The car is priced at 499,000 euros (excluding 19 percent VAT) for export from Germany.

  • Mercedes-Benz GLS63 AMG

Mercedes-AMG is improving the GLS 63 4MATIC+ and enhancing its standard features. They’re making the GLS 63 the leader of the AMG SUV family with better on-road driving performance and exclusive equipment.

The newly designed LED rear light signature sets the new model apart visually. Two new colours – MANUFAKTUR alpine grey non-metallic and sodalite blue metallic – have been added to the range of paint finishes. The AMG emblem now replaces the Mercedes star in the front section, emphasising brand affinity. The sportiness is highlighted with red brake callipers. The vehicle plays an AMG-specific light animation when the front doors are opened, thanks to a new logo projector. Wheel options range from the standard 21-inch ten-spoke light-alloy wheel to 22 and 23-inch forged wheels.

    New highlights in the interior

The interior of the new Mercedes-AMG GLS has AMG seats and Exclusive nappa leather upholstery on the instrument panel. The Bahia brown/black or macchiato beige/black colour scheme is new. Glossy brown lime wood is now available as an option for interior trim. There’s also a new MANUFAKTUR glossy black piano lacquer with flowing decorative lines available upon request. The latest generation of MBUX is featured, including AMG-specific screen design and functions for a more immersive brand experience.

    Significantly more extensive standard equipment

The new model has more extensive standard equipment than its already lavishly equipped predecessor. This includes an electric panoramic sliding sunroof, heated and climatised front seats, Adaptive High Beam Assist and Smartphone Integration. The AMG Performance exhaust system, Burmester® sound system, Memory package, 360-degree Parking Pilot, KEYLESS-GO package, and Blind Spot Assist are also included.

The new model features the latest generation of the AMG Performance steering wheel. The brilliant displays and intuitive operating logic of the round AMG steering wheel buttons allow for controlling important driving functions and all drive programs without taking hands off the steering wheel. The steering wheel rim has the option to be heated and is available in a carbon-fibre look.

Customers can expect special equipment features such as the MBUX Augmented Reality function, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, and the AMG Driver’s package. Additionally, the AIR BALANCE package, multicontour front seats, and head-up display are included. Standard features also include the MBUX Interior Assistant and temperature-controlled cup holders.

The GLS 63 is powered by the proven AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, which produces 450 kW (612 hp). The engine has been electrified with a 48-volt auxiliary on-board electrical system and the integrated starter alternator (ISG) with Boost function. The twin-scroll turbochargers are located between the cylinder heads for better response, delivering explosive power with finely controlled output. Also, the cylinder shutoff system significantly reduces consumption when less power is needed.

The V8 engine is equipped with an integrated starter alternator (ISG) and a 48-volt on-board electrical system. The ISG is a powerful electric motor that combines a starter and alternator and is positioned between the engine and transmission. It also has hybrid capabilities, such as boosting, recuperation, load point shifting, gliding, and seamless engine restarting with the start/stop function.

Active roll stabilisation with new configuration

The GLS 63 has an AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with adaptive adjustable damping as standard equipment. AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL is an active roll stabilisation system that uses two electro-mechanical actuators at the front and rear axle. This system reduces body roll while cornering and improves precision when entering bends. It also enhances driving comfort on uneven roads.

The roll stabilisation and air suspension receive a software update and new setup as part of the facelift. This increases the spread between dynamic handling and comfort. The software is fine-tuned for the configuration of ESP®, the electronically controlled rear-axle locking differential, the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, and the suspension control system to deliver a dynamic and superior driving experience.

Numerous innovations and more extensive standard equipment – Mercedes-Benz is making the spacious GLB compact SUV even more attractive for customers. The redesigned front bumper with visual underbody protection points to its off-road genes. The SUV radiator grille with four horizontal louvres and central star underlines this impression. The athletic shoulder shape, with coherently modelled side graphics, creates an interesting interplay of light and shadow and a visually width-accentuated rear end.

New striking full-LED headlights and rear lights enhance the appearance, with the range of options now expanded with four additional wheel designs and a new Spectral Blue Metallic paint colour. In basic trim, the new GLB is fitted with 17-inch five-twin-spoke alloy wheels in high-gloss black with high-gloss turned surfaces. However, the GLB can also be configured with 18- to 20-inch wheels.

One of the highlights of the significantly upgraded interior is the freestanding double screen. Standard are a 7-inch and a 10.25-inch display for the respective instrument cluster and multimedia screens, with two 10.25‑inch wide-screen displays available as an option. The round air vents in turbine look convey sporty elegance and contrast with the straight-lined, off-road-typical interior elements in aluminium. The standard steering wheel of the current generation is upholstered in leather, with ARTICO man-made leather available on request. In addition, a heated steering wheel rim is available for the AMG Line for the first time.

Simplified offer logic with extensive standard equipment

Comfort seats come as standard in the new GLB, which are upholstered in ARTICO man-made leather and black fabric with three-dimensional embossing. They are optionally available in the trendy sagegrey colour. Three interior colours – black, macchiato beige and sagegrey – are available in the Progressive equipment variant. The standard seat cover in ARTICO man-made leather/microfibre MICROCUT is now also available in bahia brown in the AMG Line, as are a total of four upholstery colours: black, bahia brown, sagegrey and the new shade red pepper combined with black. The comfort seat fabric covering is made of 100% recycled materials while in the ARTICO/MICROCUT seat cover, this proportion is 65% in the seat mirror and 85% in the bottom fabric.

The standard equipment of the GLB has been significantly upgraded. The offer logic has been adapted even more precisely to specific customer wishes. The basic equipment already includes Highbeam Assist, a reversing camera and the USB package in addition to the leather steering wheel and the LED front headlights, for example. Customers also receive the Parking Package and the Mirror Package from the Progressive equipment variant onwards. Further functional equipment is bundled into packages based on real customer behaviour, with customers being able to configure vehicles individually in terms of design features such as colours, upholstery, trim and wheels.

Intuitive operation and adaptive software in the latest MBUX generation

The GLB now features the latest generation of MBUX with newly designed display styles. “Classic” provides all relevant driver information while “Sporty” impresses with the dynamic rev counter. Those who want to limit themselves to essential content can select “Discreet”. In combination with the three Navigation, Assistance, and Services modes and the 10 Ambient Light colour worlds, customers are treated to numerous individualisation options. All previous functions such as Media, Phone or Vehicle are still available, and they can be conveniently operated via touchscreen or steering-wheel-mounted finger pads.

New design and improved performance were the main focuses of the revision of the telematics system. For further connectivity, the GLB now has an additional USB-C port and increased USB charging power while all USB ports are illuminated. In the future, wireless networking with smartphones will be possible via Android Auto Wireless or Apple CarPlay.

Intelligent voice assistant learns with you

The Mercedes-Benz intelligent voice assistant is becoming even more capable of dialogue and learning thanks to online services in the Mercedes me app that can be activated. The system gets to know the driver and remembers their typical settings or routes. At the appropriate moment, it suggests personalised infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions – precisely tailored to the respective driving situation. The driver can, of course, reject this suggestion with the “Do not suggest now” function, or permanently delete it with “Do not suggest again”. The vehicle will remember these wishes. Certain actions can thus be triggered without having to say “Hey Mercedes,” and the voice assistant can now also explain vehicle functions. As part of the “MBUX Voice Assistant” from Mercedes me, the audio “Tourguide” adds an exciting feature to travel information – initially only available in Germany. When the voice command “Hey Mercedes, start Tourguide” is given, MBUX reads out interesting facts about places of interest along the route, responding to the approximately 3,400 brown signs along German motorways.

The optional Burmester® surround sound system now features the immersive Dolby Atmos audio experience in conjunction with the latest MBUX generation, giving music more space, clarity and depth. The system also adapts to any playback environment, meaning fans can listen to music with unparalleled clarity that matches the artist’s original vision from the studio.

    Mini-games as digital extras

A new digital extra has made its way into the GLB with the optional individualisation package for Mercedes me connect services. A selection of mini-games designed especially for the touchscreens and the touch-control buttons on the steering wheel turn the compact SUV into a mobile game console. Games can be played alone or with fellow passengers. Currently, classic games such as Sudoku, Shuffle Puck, Pairs and Match 3 as well as a quiz are available.

Safety assistance is another area in which the new GLB shines. Through Active Steering Control, an upgrade of the Driving Assistance Package enables more comfortable control of Lane Keeping Assist. The next generation of the Parking Package also supports longitudinal parking with 360-degree visualisation for camera-assisted parking. For the first time, the GLB also offers Trailer Manoeuvring Assist, which facilitates reverse manoeuvring with camera support. The prerequisite is the trailer hitch with ESP® trailer stabilisation in conjunction with the Parking Package with 360-degree camera.

    Even more electrified drive options

The new GLB is available in Europe with four petrol and four diesel engine options. The range includes four‑cylinder units with seven- or eight-speed DCT dual-clutch transmission as standard. The two most powerful petrol engines come with variable 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard.

To reduce consumption and emissions, all petrol units are electrified. These mild hybrids are equipped with an additional 48-volt electrical system for the belt-driven starter generator. Its briefly available additional power of 10 kW supports agile starting and is used for faster acceleration via boost. The starter-generator also increases comfort: in addition to low-vibration and low-noise engine starting, it enables coasting with the combustion engine switched off. In addition, it recuperates during braking and acceleration – and in this way supplies the 12-volt on-board network and the 48-volt battery with electrical energy.

Smooth operation and superior power delivery with contemporary efficiency are hallmarks of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. It is available in three power and torque levels from 85 kW (280 Nm) to 140 kW (400 Nm) and features single-stage turbocharging with variable turbine geometry. The cylinder head and crankcase are made of lightweight aluminium. The NANOSLIDE® coating developed by Mercedes-Benz reduces friction between the cylinder wall and the steel piston and thereby reduces consumption and emissions.
