  • 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG blends luxury, style and performance

2013-Mercedes-Benz-GL-63-AMG-THUMB2013 Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG was born when luxury, performance and refinement blended. The new model has a striking design, maximum safety and the dynamism. It combines compelling technologies and comes equipped with wide range of standard equipment, and in addition can offer ride comfort for up to seven passengers.

The great performance is provided by the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, which develops a peak output of 410 kW (557 hp) and maximum torque of 760 Nm (560 lb-ft). Important feature in this 2013 Mercedes-Benz model is the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension which has an ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM roll stabilization. Thank to it the driver can experience car’s high-level driving dynamics.

Due to the aforementioned facts, this Mercedes-Benz SUV accelerates form 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Its top speed is 250 km/h and of course is electronically limited. And if you wonder about the fuel consumption, it is estimated around 2.3 litres per 100 kilometres. The car emits 288 g CO2 per kilometer.

A detailed highlight must be put on the AMG M 157 eight-cylinder engine. It includes an innovative, high-tech power package featuring spray-guided direct petrol injection, piezo injectors, biturbo charging, air/water intercooling, all-aluminium crankcase, a four-valve-per-cylinder design with variable camshaft adjustment, plus alternator management and the ECO start/stop system.

    2013 Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG

The power which comes from this state-of-the-art engine is transmitted by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC. The latter, includes three modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting. When it is in “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode then the ECO start/stop function is activated and it shuts down the eight-cylinder engine as soon as the vehicle comes to a standstill.

In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) driving modes, the ECO start/stop function is not in function and the engine-transmission combination displays far greater agility with more spontaneous responses.

In order to improve the efficiency of the vehicle, Mercedes-Benz made the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission special. Now it incorporates a fuel-economy converter with centrifugal pendulum, bearings designed for reduced friction loss and a transmission-oil thermal management system.

Additional features such as friction loss-minimized axle gears, electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, an optimized belt drive, and demand-responsive control of all ancillary units and pumps also play an important part in minimizing the fuel consumption.

In addition, the GL 63 AMG has three suspension modes “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport plus”. The fully load-bearing air suspension system is speed-sensitive, lowering the body at higher speeds in order to minimize drag while increasing driving stability.

Mercedes-Benz has included electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering. It includes variable power assistance which responds in accordance with the chosen suspension mode. This one also contributes to lessen the fuel consumption.

Next, the GL 63 AMG comes as standard with 5-spoke light-alloy wheels in 10 x 21 inches. They are in titanium grey color coating and with a high-sheen finish, fitted with tyres in size 295/40 R 21. The AMG high-performance braking system could not be excluded from this model. It is responsible for the shortest possible braking distances.

In terms of exterior 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG has striking and masculine appeal. In fact, the designers have used some specific elements to emphasize the top V8 model’s exceptional performance.

The typically upright GL radiator grille with its central Mercedes star is adorned with high-gloss slats painted in black. What comes from AMG as styling elements here are the front apron with its large openings which contribute for the effective air flow for the cooling modules.

The bottom air intake takes the form of a typical AMG stylised “A” with a gap under the fine black fin through which air can flow optimally to the cooling modules. And observed from the side, there can be seen the V8 BITURBO logos on the wings and illuminated running boards with an aluminium finish.

Great attention to the detail dominates throughout the whole interior. Not only this, but the luxury provided and the spaciousness will delight the customers as well. All seven seats for instance are covered in high-quality leather. In addition, the seats are electrically adjustable and include double topstitching in a contrasting colour and AMG badges on the front seat backrests and outer rear seat backrests.

Furthermore, the AMG Performance four-spoke steering wheel also comes with perforated leather in the grip area. Additionally, four round instruments on the AMG instrument cluster provide the driver with important information.

The standard equipment of the GL 63 AMG includes: AMG door sill panels in stainless steel, AMG floor mats, AMG sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs, Active Parking Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST, Bi-xenon headlamps, Audio 20 CD radio with Bluetooth® and USB interface, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, Electric EASY-ENTRY system in the rear compartment, Electrically operated EASY-PACK tailgate, Electric glass tilt/sliding sunroof, Intelligent Light System (ILS) with new off-road lighting, KEYLESS-GO, Multicontour seats for driver and front passenger including a massage function and Memory package, Crosswind Assist, THERMATIC 3-zone automatic climate control.

  • Pricing announced for 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Roadster

2013-Mercedes-Benz-SL-THUMB2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Roadster is even more exceptional as one can imagine it and is now available with a starting price of £72 495. This is the sixth generation of the world’s most emblematic Roadster and afore mentioned price goes for the SL 350 model. SL 500 will cost the “willing-to-be-driver” £83 445.

One is most certain, the new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Roadster is lighter, have sportier stance and more importantly – more efficient. An interesting fact for instance is that the main reason for this is that its body was almost entirely of aluminum. All this combined with its power, which comes from Mercedes-Benz BlueDIRECT direct-injection engine, makes the luxurious car efficient in terms of fuel, yet still not lacking in performance.

In particular, SL 350 is powered by a BlueDIRECT 3.5-litre V6 engine, which produces 306 horsepower (225 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) of torque at 3,500 – 5,250 rpm. The new model will be also responsible for sharper performance. It is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in only 5.9 seconds and onto a 155 mph electronically limited top speed. However, its CO2 emissions remain high – 176 g/km. Yet, the fuel economy is more than excellent – 37.7mpg.

Next, the SL 500 is powered by the 4,663 cc BlueDIRECT V8 engine. This one combines direct injection and twin-turbo technologies. Due tot his fact, it develops 435 hp (320 kW) at 5,250 rpm and an impressive 700 Nm (517 lb-ft) of torque which is available from a low 1,800 rpm to 3,500 rpm. Its sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is even more impressive – it can cover it in just 4.6 seconds. Here as well the speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Fuel efficiency and CO2 figures are 30.7 mpg on the combined cycle and 214 g/km.

    2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Roadster
    2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Roadster

Although it is a new 2013 model, the SL-Class retains its classic sports-roadster proportions. It still has a long bonnet and set-back cabin. Nevertheless, the car is now longer, wider and lower than before.

Something that must be highlighted here as well is that its body construction is mainly made from aluminum. The consequence of this is that it has reduced the weight of the car with circa 140 kg, despite the significant increases in safety and luxury features. Nonetheless, there are parts which are non-aluminum: the magnesium sections of the rear floor and the high-strength steel implants in the front windscreen pillars for peerless open-top safety.

The body of this Mercedes-Benz vehicle can now be considered stiffer as well. For example, the chassis now includes semi-active adjustable damping or optional Active Body Control, and Direct Steer speed-sensitive power steering. All this results in more nimble and sporty responses with no sacrifice in comfort.

In terms of safety, the new SL-Class can be considered among the safest roadster in the world. It comes equipped with a comprehensive standard protection features: PRE-SAFE, NECK-PRO, ATTENTION ASSIST and ADAPTIVE BRAKE, pro-active DISTRONIC PLUS AND PRE-SAFE BRAKE (as an option).

Standard specification includes the following: Pre-safe, Attention Assist and Active Bonnet; Intelligent Light System with bi-Xenon headlamps; Magic Vision Control heated adaptive wiper system; COMAND Online with Media Interface; Sports seats trimmed in leather upholstery; 18” five-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels.

  • GSC Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG

GSC-Mercedes-Benz-CLS-thumbGerman Special Customs (GSC), based in Chemnitz, Germany, like to add their own touch on already slightly mad vehicles. Take for example, the Mercedes-Benz CLS 63AMG (W218) – impressive enough, isn’t it? Well, the way they see it, there’s always room for improvement.

The front bumper is new and harbors massive lower mesh grills and some LEDs. The hood has also been replaced with something that is most certainly not waterproof. Move to the sides and you’ll notice that the side skirts are now a bit more pronounced and as for the back, the bumper is entirely new along with its carbony rear diffuser. GSC have dubbed the whole aerodynamic project as “Stealth” which sounds inappropriate since it’s pretty noticeable. However, it does make the car very edgy and slightly unconventional much like F117 Nighthawk airplane – designed to deflect radar signals. In addition, that matte overall finish makes us think that this particular AMG has been borrowed from the set of The Avengers movie.

And much like Captain America, this CLS has also been scientifically buffed. Normally, AMG manage to pump out 525 hp from its 5.5 bi-turbo V8. GSC have raised that bar up to 750 hp and 1,150 Nm of torque. In order to achieve that, the company’s engineers replaced the two turbochargers with ones that are… well… bigger, replaced the exhaust system and have also added another intercooler. As a result, the “Stealth” now does the 0 to 100 kph sprint in just 3.7 seconds and will continue gathering velocity until it reaches 350 km/h.

That however, would not have been possible with the performance upgrade alone. To tame all that power, a more-proper suspension is needed and that’s where a KW coilover adjustable suspension kit comes in place. Take into account the 20-inch rims, the 255/30R20 and 295/25R20 Continental tires on them and you get a well rounded ultra-performance four-seater.

  • Prior Mercedes-Benz M-Class Aerodynamic Kit

prior-mercedes-benz-m-class-w164Prior Design seem to be in a very SUV mood considering the fact that they have released yet another program for an old-ish titan. Nor really that old actually – the Mercedes-Benz M Class W164 (the one made from 2005 to 2011). Does it look any different from yesterday’s Range Rover? Well, granted that it is a Mercedes, it does but the Prior Design formula on it is basically the same.

Yes, you know it – a front bumper, side skirts a rear bumper and… mounting material. Not what we call thrilling. Okay, there’s also a hood that comes along. Mind you, that’s how things sound on paper. A quick glance at the gallery and we find that the end result is not that gray (it’s white). Despite the add-on side skirts, the M-class has managed to retain a bit of it’s ground clearance. The rear bumper blends seamlessly with the back fenders and wheel-arches while the front looks simply mean (this being an SUV, it should). There are of course LED daytime running lights. But they are optional. At the price of 329 Euros ($428), we recommend they stay that way.

As usual, all materials are made up of Dura-Flex Fiber Reinforced Plastic which is, as one might suspect, durable and flexible. No modifications on the stock Mercedes M-class whatsoever are needed.
