  • 2014 Chevrolet SS Revealed At Daytona!

2014 Chevrolet SS is finally revealed after being teased a few days ago. This is Chevrolet‘s first V-8, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan since 1996, and it is created in order to offer performance on the street and on the track.

The model has just debuted at the Daytona International Speedway, showing off its proven, race-tested, global rear-wheel drive architecture. The Chevrolet SS is equipped with the LS3 Chevrolet V-8, which genrates 415 horsepower (305 kW) and 415 lb-ft (562 Nm) of torque.

The unit is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which can be shifted manually using TAPshift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. More importantly, this Chevrolet model delivers acceleration time of 5 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h.

In addition, is equipped with a a sport-tuned chassis, including MacPherson strut front and multilink independent rear suspension geometry, electronic power steering system, optimized for sport driving, standard Brembo brakes, with ventilated, 355-mm rotors and two-piece, four-piston front calipers, Forged aluminum wheels, wrapped in ultra-high-performance Bridgestone tires: 19 x 8.5 inch wheels with 245/40ZR19 tires in front; 19 x 9.0 inch wheels with 275/35ZR19 tires in the rear.

To go further into details, the staggered front and rear wheels are pushed out to the corners. Hence, they improve the sporting, muscular presence of the SS. Up front, the aluminum hood includes a subtle “power bulge” hinting at the power of the engine underneath.

On the other hand, at the rear, the tapered, tear-drop shape delivers enhanced aerodynamic performance. Some of the highlights here include jewel-like chrome accents, standard high-intensity discharge headlamps and light-emitting diode daytime running lights.

How about the interior: it is spacious enough and comfortably accommodates five adults, with 42 inches of front legroom, and 39 inches of rear legroom. The seats are wrapped in leather as a standard. The SS emblem can be seen on the soft-touch instrument panel which also includes two types of chrome finishes – a satin gloss and bright chrome. At night, the interior is illuminated by ice blue ambient lighting.

A wide range of technology features is included in the Chevrolet SS: Color, in-dashboard touch screen that supports Chevrolet MyLink and the next- generation navigation system; Bose® Nine-speaker premium sound system; Color heads-up display; Push-button start; StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control; Forward Collision Alert; Lane Departure Warning; Side Blind Zone Alert; Rear-vision camera Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Even more, in the SS is also included for the first time the Automatic Parking Assist, which provides hands-free parking help. This parking assistant utilizes ultrasonic sensing system in order to detect the width and depth of either parallel or reverse right-angle parking spaces.

2014 Chevrolet SS will be available at dealerships in the fourth quarter of 2013.

  • Chevrolet Corvette To Include Brand New Lightweight Smart Material

Corvette-Smart-Materia-THUMBChevrolet is going to debut a brand new lightweight “Smart Material” on the Corvette model. In particular this is a heat-activated shape memory alloy which is going to replace heavier motorized parts.

Since its first appearance in 1953, the Corvette has a six-decade track record for introducing lightweight materials that improve cars performance. Now, the trend is continued, with the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray weighing in 99 pounds lighter than its predecessor.

The latter model is the first vehicle to use the “smart material” – lightweight shape memory alloy wire in place of a heavier motorized actuator to open and close the hatch vent that releases air from the trunk. This allows the trunk lid to close more easily.

But, what exactly are the shape memory alloys? They are usually made of copper-aluminum-nickel or nickel-titanium and can change their shape, strength, and/or stiffness when activated by heat, stress, a magnetic field or electrical voltage. Shape memory alloys “remember” their original shape and return to it when de-activated.

In the latest seventh generation Corvette, a shape memory alloy wire opens the hatch vent whenever the deck lid is opened. It utilizes heat from an electrical current in a similar manner to the trunk lights.

When it is activated the lever arm is moved and opens the vent, allowing the trunk lid to close. When the latter is closed, the electrical current switches off. This allows he wire to cool and return to its normal shape. Unwanted mass is also removed by shape memory alloy. This of course enhances performance and fuel economy.

Next, what adds to the visual appeal of the car are the advanced high-intensity discharge and light-emitting diode lighting and racing-proven aerodynamics, which balance low drag for efficiency and performance elements for improved stability and track capability.

At last, what needs to be mentioned is the track-capable Z51 Performance Package. This one enhances the new generation Corvette with the help of electronic limited-slip differential, dry-sump oiling system, integral brake, differential and transmission cooling, as well as a unique aero package.

  • 2013 NASCAR Chevrolet SS Unveiled

2013 NASCAR Chevrolet SS has been finally unveiled and with this Chevrolet opened a new chapter in its racing history. The racing car is powered by the famous small block V-8 engine and it is a rear-wheel drive performance sedan.

As a matte of fact, the all-new rear wheel drive V-8 Chevrolet SS performance sedan will debut early next year. Furthermore, the Chevrolet SS is going to be the next in a long line of famed nameplates that Chevrolet has campaigned in NASCAR and it is going to replace Impala, which scored 151 wins from 1959-64 and 2007-12.

On the other hand, the limited production version of the Chevrolet SS is envisioned to be a 2014 model and we are going to see it in the showrooms in the end of next year. The brand has long used the SS (Super Sport) designation on high-performance models of some of its most enduring nameplates.

The SS designation was firstly introduced with the appearance of a Corvette prototype race car in 1957. Moreover, the first production vehicle with a SS optional package was the 1961 Impala. The car included enhanced chassis and suspension, power brakes, a steering column mounted tachometer and unique wheels and tires. Two years ago the SS designation returned to the Chevrolet lineup with the debut of the fifth-generation Camaro.

Another interesting fact is that Chevrolet has 702 victories in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series so far. No other manufacturer has achieved such number. Going back in time Fonty Flock earned the first win on March 26, 1955, at Columbia, S.C. This month at Texas Motor Speedway, the five-time series champion Jimmie Johnson achieved Chevrolet’s 700th victory.
