  • Audi F12 Prototype or a R8 with 204HP

Audi has announced a strange car – F12 Prototype, which is actually a R8 but with an electric motor. The sports electric car comes a 38 kWh battery and three motors with a combined power of 204HP (150 kW) and 550Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque.

When the car goes at low speeds, only the front axle is powered by a single electric motor and on high speeds or fast acceleration – the two rear motors are activated for full power and control.

“Our team united engineering art, creativity and a portion of lateral thinking,” said Dr. Christian Allmann, one of the project managers.

“Young, independent free-thinkers worked together with the experts from the Technical Development departments at Audi and Bosch. We enjoyed a constant sharing of our respective knowledge and different work cultures.” “The project was very dynamic with respect to personnel and technologies, resulting in a very flexible collaboration with open interfaces,” added Martin Schüssler, Allmann’s colleague.

The F12 driver controls basic drive functions – Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive – by operating buttons on the center tunnel. All other operations are controlled via a tablet computer that can be removed from the center console. A user-programmable instrument cluster presents all key information in high resolution.

The car is actually planned for production, but nothing is sure for now.

  • Prior Design Audi R8 PD GT850 – Seduction in Red

Prior Design Audi R8 PD GT850 is the latest and breathtaking tuning of the folks from the studio Prior Design. Being a true Audi R8, the supercar impresses with both outstanding look and spectacular driving performance. However, this fact didn’t stop the tuners and they have put all their efforts in order to make it even better.

The result is truly impressive, we must admit. They have turned this Audi model into a brutal PD-GT850 racing style car. Here we can see that the front is entirely revised, where a front apron with widenings and an integrated carbon spoiler was installed.

Furthermore, two air inlet covers were integrated and were applied with two carbon struts each. In addition, the motor cowl has an integrated air outlet with four lamellae. And if we have to ask why this incredible car looks much wider, well the answer lies in the installation of a set of new front mudguards.

Next to be mentioned is the improved air circulation along the vehicle sides. This was achieved by installing aerodynamically formed side sills that also optionally light the vehicle underbody with four LED lamps.

The tail area could have been taken off of a GT3-racing car. A massive tail spoiler and a tail bumper with lateral air inlets, as well as a Carbona application put a lot more power onto the rear axle. Of course, the powerful stance here is complemented by tail widenings.

A great deal here is also the matching wheel/tyre combination for the R8. Now the car runs on a 3-part ADV1 Concave-wheel in 20 inch with Continental tyres in 265/30R20 and 325/25R20.

prior design audi r8 pd-gt850 engine

Prior-Design also offers as an option here a special sports exhaust system with flap control. For the “small” 4.2 FSI engine the power can be raised from 420 (309 kW) to 475 hp (350 kW). In addition there is an option which includes compressor conversion with power upgrade which reaches a full 565 hp (415 kW).

  • ABT Audi A1 Quattro – Power and control

The Audi A1 Quattro is truly an exceptional car, which has everything that a petrol head needs – speed, stability, handling and nice aggressive vision. Still, there are a few tweaks which can be done to make it even better.

As Hans-Jürgen Abt emphasises: “A dynamic engine, an intelligent 4WD and a low weight – our A1 quattro is a real racer.“

The ABT A1 Quattro is powered by a 2.0 liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine boosted to sensational 307HP (226 kW) and 400Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. This is an increase of 51HP and 50Nm. The result on the track is 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds (0.3 quicker) and a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) – electronically limited.

Still, the boost doesn’t affect the fuel consumption, which makes the A1 Quattro a suitable everyday vehicle, despite the hard as rock suspension.

Hans-Jürgen Abt commented: “If needed, the A1 quattro reacts immediately if you hit the pedal to the metal and your body won’t lack adrenaline …. But it is also easy to drive through narrow inner city streets.“

Once unleashed, this combination of ABT POWER and quattro drive is a sure winner!

  • Audi’s Electric Bi-turbo Engine

Audi will produce a super high-efficient electric bi-turbo diesel engine. In this future technology, a secondary compressor boosts the main turbocharger at lower engine speeds.

Audi has announced they are testing an electric bi-turbo diesel engine.

The latest bi-turbo diesel from Audi is the 3.0 Bi-TDI. It develops 313HP (230 kW) and 650Nm (480 lb-ft) at just 1450RPM. This is a specific power output of 106HP (78 kW) per liter displacement. However, its combined fuel consumption in the A6 is only 6.4 / 100 km (36.75 US mpg) and CO2 emissions of 169 g/km.

What all turbocharged engines have in common is that the turbocharger is driven by energy from the exhaust. This means that starting from very low revs, the rise in boost pressure and therefore torque becomes gradually greater only as the exhaust energy increases.

A new development stage is the electric biturbo. This makes it possible – independently of the exhaust energy available – to build up charge pressure quickly and achieve high levels of torque even at very low revs.

In advanced diesel development at Audi’s site in Neckarsulm, a 3.0 V6 TDI was built and calibrated with an electric biturbo. It is a combination of a conventional gas-driven turbocharger with a secondary electrically driven compressor – whose exterior appearance is almost identical to that of a conventional turbocharger.

Instead of a turbine wheel driven by the exhaust gas stream, this is an auxiliary charging stage arranged in line with the gas-driven turbocharger. It integrates a small electric motor that can accelerate its turbine to very high speeds in an extremely short time. The electrically driven compressor is placed after the main turbocharger and intercooler in the charge air path. In most operating states, the charge air is routed around it via a bypass. However, when the flap integrated in the bypass closes – i.e. when the main turbocharger’s energy output is low – the air is directed into the electric compressor and is compressed there a second time.

The results of the new concept are impressive. Torque buildup occurs significantly earlier in every drive-off, which the driver perceives as a distinct boost in performance.

The energy required to drive the electric compressor is largely offset by battery regeneration during coasting phases, so that the end effect is essentially neutrall with regard to energy consumption.

The flexible and compact charge air path enables two-stage turbocharging with just one turbine that is driven by exhaust gas. The reduced heat demand enables earlier activation of the catalytic converter.

The same engine has a second more powerful version – 140HP (103 kW) and 250Nm (184 lb-ft). It features the innovative cylinder on demand (COD) system, which deactivates the second and third cylinders at low to intermediate loads and while coasting. Average fuel consumption is 4.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (50.05 US mpg) with CO2 emissions are just 110 grams per. Performance is sporty, with a time of 8.4 seconds for the standard sprint (with manual transmission) and a top speed of 213 km/h (132.35 mph).

The new 1.8 TFSI, the most powerful gasoline engine in the lineup, produces 180HP (132 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. It combines FSI direct injection with indirect injection and uses the Audi valvelift system to vary valve lift as required. The exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head – a similar solution is also used in the two smaller TFSI engines. Key performance data with S tronic and front-wheel drive: from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.3 seconds, top speed of 232 km/h (144.16 mph) and average fuel consumption of 5.6 liters per 100 km (42.00 US mpg) corresponding to 130 grams CO2 per km.
