  • Volkswagen Golf GTE Plug-In Hybrid Revealed

Volkswagen-Golf-GTE-Plug-In-Hybrid-THUMBVolkswagen has released the first images of the brand new four-door Golf GTE Plug-In Hybrid vehicle, which was created with the aim to combine the benefits of electric mobility with the dynamics of a Golf GTI.

The new car will make its debut in Geneva, where also will be disclosed its detailed specifications. If you haven’t figured out what the letters GTE stand for, where here’s the hint: the GT is for “Gran Tourismo”, while the E stands for Electric.

Precisely, the car will utilize two engines – a 1.4-litre TSI direct-injection petrol engine that produces 150 hp (110 kW) and a 102 hp (75 kW) electric motor. Together both generate 204 hp (150 kW), 350 Nm (258 lbs ft) of torque and a theoretical range of around 580 miles. Volkswagen Golf GTE uses a six-speed DSG gearbox with a triple-clutch system.

Furthermore, thanks to the mentioned horsepower, the car achieves a 7.6 seconds time for the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h. The fuel efficiency on a combined cycle is estimated at 188 mpg, while the CO2 emissions – at 35 g/km.

In terms of exterior, there is nothing that would surprise us here – in other words, the GTE is a typical Golf. However, it includes C-shaped LED daytime running lights on the front bumper similarly to the e-Golf and aerodynamic horizontal ‘fins’ like the GTI. The hybrid will be fitted with 18-inch ‘Serron’ alloy wheels as a standard.

The same blue highlights seen on the exterior can be found on the inside. For instance, there is a blue stitching of the steering wheel, gear lever gaiter and seats, and a blue stripe in the tartan pattern on the sports seats. The interior also sports 8-inch Discover Pro satellite navigation system with DAB radio and Bluetooth as a standard.

  • Volkswagen GRC Beetle To Compete In Red Bull Global Rallycross

Volkswagen-GRC-Beetle-THUMBVolkswagen and Andretti Sports Marketing have introduced more information about the 2014 Rallycross program. This included the reveal of a new vehicle at the Chicago Auto Show. The brand has announced also that it will run two cars in the series for drivers Tanner Foust and Scott Speed.

At first, the team will compete with modified Polo rally cars, and later will switch during the season to the Volkswagen GRC Beetle. The latter is an all-wheel-drive rallycross car that is built upon the third-generation Beetle and will offer more than 560 horsepower (412 kW) from its turbocharged and direct-injection TSI engine.

If you haven’t heard about the Rallycross, well here some info: this is the fastest growing form of motorsports in the United States. The cars which are competing are pitted against each other and the clock in a series of heats on a closed course that’s usually a mixture of dirt and pavement, with a 70-foot jump. What attracts the most is that the action is fast and intense.

Tanner Foust, as mentioned, will sit behind the steering wheel of the Beetle. He is a 2011 and 2012 GRC champion and runner-up in 2013. Foust is also famous for hosting the U.S. version of Top Gear and for his rally driving skills.

The other driver to take part in the rally is Scott Speed, who will be racing the 7UP entry. Speed has competed at the very pinnacle of motorsports, driving Formula 1 for Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2006 and 2007. He also participated in NASCAR between 2008 and 2013.

Red Bull Global Rallycross series begins in May, where a pair of Polo cars driven by Foust and Speed will be competing. The definitive Volkswagen GRC Beetle will appear at the X Games in June.

  • Volkswagen Taigun First Time in Asia

Volkswagen-Taigun-Concept-shadowVolkswagen-Taigun-Concept-medium-1Today the Auto Expo 2014 in New Delhi kicked off and here’s what’s hot: The Volkswagen Taigun – ever so close to production – is making its Asian premier. This time, however, beside being rather orange, it has a new backside with an exterior-mounted spare wheel. Apparently, that was the feedback the company received ever since the Taigun made its world debut at Sao Paulo. How do you get customer feedback on a concept vehicle?

Just a quick reminder: the Taigun is a compact-SUV (sigh) concept that carries Volkswagen’s 3-cylinder 1.0-liter TSI engine: a blatant take on Ford’s EcoBoost range. It develops 110hp at 5000 rpm and has an average fuel consumption of 4.7 l/100km. Probably, the fact that the Taigun is really, really small helps.

How small is it? 3,859 mm long without the spare wheel, 1,728 mm wide and 1,570 mm high. Still, it has a relatively big wheelbase at 2,470 mm (the front and rear overhangs stretch out 708 mm and 681 mm respectively). Total weight: just bellow a ton.

The new rear end, as we said, boasts a mounted spare wheel. By the way, all five wheels measure at 17-inches and have 205/50 R17 tires on them. Hinged on the driver’s side, the boot lid, which holds the mounts, swinges outwards when opened (the handle is cleverly integrated into the right taillight). The rear window, with the roof spoiler integrated above it, opens independently outwards. Both ends of the underbody make use of a rugged metal protection panel.

Inside, the Taigun offers as much cargo space as it can. With no modifications whatsoever, you get 280 liters of boot to spare. Fold the rear seats and that number grows to 996 liters. There are also storage compartments in the tailgate.

It’s a simple, convenient, and easy-to-use everyday car that still holds some off-roading merit. Let’s see how they come along with the actual production of it.

  • Volkswagen Beetle Marks 65 Years In The United States

Volkswagen is celebrating this month a very special anniversary. Exactly 65 years ago the iconic Beetle arrived for the first time in the United States. In January 1949 Volkswagen Type 1, or Beetle, was shipped to New York City by the Dutch businessman Ben Pon, Sr.

The same year, the car attracted buyers, marking the first time that Volkswagen vehicles were sold in the U.S. The Beetle became later a cultural milestone for the entire generation. For 65 years, the brand managed not only to sell Beetle’s around the country but also to offer eleven different models with great success. As a matter of fact, in 2013 the German company sold 407,704 vehicles in the U.S. alone.

Back in the days, Americans were drawn to the affordability and practicality of the car. They also were so charmed by its unique design, size, and fuel efficiency. 1977 marked the last Type 1, which was rolled off the production line, and the next new Beetle was introduced more than a decade later – in 1998. The vehicle paid styling homage to its predecessor. However, it featured water cooled engine and was mounted at the front.

A redesigned third-generation Beetle entered the North American market in 2011 and offered powerful and fuel-efficient engines, better handling, as well as more technology and safety features.

A week ago Volkswagen announced the pricing of 2014 Beetle, which now comes equipped with 1.8T engine that substitutes the 5-cylinder 2.5 liter one. 1.8T is direct-injected ad produces 170 hp (127 kW) and 249 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque at 2,750 rpm. The powertrain is matched with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

  • 2014 Volkswagen Polo Gains New Engines And Technology

2014-Volkswagen-Polo-THUMbThe facelifted 2014 Volkswagen Polo has been unveiled and it includes a range of new technologies and efficient engines, next to the interior and exterior refinements. The new technology equipment will be familiar to this found in the new Golf model, making an emphasis on safety, practicality, comfort and efficiency.

For instance, the new Polos will be equipped as standard with an Automatic Post-Collision Braking System that automatically brakes the car after a collision in order to minimize the kinetic energy and the chance of a second impact. Optional features here include Driver Alert System and Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Automatic Cruise Control.

The Sport Select suspension system is also available as an option. It utilizes electronically controlled dampers to switch between two suspension settings, while the new electro-mechanical steering system enhances efficiency and delivers precise control.

The Polo range will also get Volkswagen’s modular infotainment system, which includes touchscreen system with proximity sensor and a function that reacts to wiping movements by the fingers.

More importantly however, is what lies under the bonnet of the 2014 Polo. There are bein introduced three- and four-cylinder petrol engines: two 1.0-litre MPI units, with 60 hp (44 kW) or 75 hp (55 kW) and two 1.2-litre four-cylinder TSI engines with 90 hp (66 kW) or 110 hp (80 kW).

The 1.4-litre TSI powertrain with cylinder deactivation (ACT) has been refined and now delivers more power – 150 hp (110 kW). The range-topping Polo GTI will be introduced on the market in 2015.

Furthermore, the diesel-powered Polo BlueMotion will be replaced with petrol-powered Polo BlueMotion TSI, which offers 68.9 mpg on the combined cycle and emits just 94 g/km of CO2 thanks to its turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine. The latter generates 90 hp (66 kW). Diesel power can also be ensured by the two new three-cylinder 1.4-litre TDI units with 75 hp (55 kW) and 90 hp (66 kW).

There hasn’t been done much regarding the exterior. The lines on the redesigned front bumper and grille are more precise now and include a chrome line that divides the front fog lights. As an option, Volkswagen is offering LED headlights, while at the rear there are standard new lights and a new bumper. The Polo runs on five new alloy wheel designs that complete its visual stance.

At last, the interior enhancements include wholly redesigned instruments, a new steering wheel and refreshed centre console with new heating and ventilation controls. Full details and specifications about 2014 Volkswagen Polo will be announced in April. Deliveries are expected in late July.
