  • Volkswagen Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition

    Volkswagen of America today announces the highly anticipated Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition for the North American market. A world model, it celebrates 20 years of high-performance all-wheel-drive Golf vehicles, beginning with the release of the Golf R32 in Europe in 2002.

    “Twenty years is a significant milestone for the R performance brand of models, and we’re excited to share in a global celebration of two decades of R32 and Golf R heritage,” said Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing and Strategy. “Being the first official worldwide special model for the Golf R, it was important to include our North American Volkswagen performance hatch enthusiasts in this birthday party for the Golf R brand.”

    The Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition builds upon the latest generation Golf R, which utilizes Volkswagen’s advanced MQB chassis and turbocharged 315-horsepower EA888 evo4 TSI® engine. Unique to the North American market, the 20th Anniversary Edition is offered with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission.

    Select changes to the Golf R’s exterior make the 20th Anniversary Edition easily discernable without compromising the sophisticated appeal of the Golf R. Starting from the top, deleting the standard sunroof shaves weight from the Golf R’s highest point and streamlines the hatchback’s roofline. From the side, Golf R’s large 19-inch Estoril wheels are finished in Gloss Black and are fitted with 235/35 summer performance tires. As in every Golf R, a torque vectoring all-wheel-drive system is paired with an advanced DCC® adaptive damping system to help ensure power makes it to the wheels that need it in any driving situation.

    The 20th Anniversary Edition will be offered in Lapiz Blue Metallic, Deep Black Pearl, and Pure White, with a limited allocation of vehicles for each color. Subtle trim details further differentiate the special edition: The mirror caps are finished in Lapiz Blue on Pure White and Deep Black vehicles, while on those painted in Lapiz Blue, the mirror caps are gloss black. In all cases, the puddle lights project “20 R” onto the pavement below. Finally, the “R” logos—on the front and rear bumpers and front fenders—are finished in blue, while 20th Anniversary badges tastefully adorn the B-pillars.

    The subtle but deliberate nod to performance continues to the interior, where the dash panel and front door trim feature genuine carbon fiber décor inserts for the first time in a production Volkswagen vehicle. These impart a racing personality to an already sporty cabin that is appointed with an ergonomically optimized “D” shape steering wheel and supportive high-bolster sport seats. Keen eyes will note the “R” logo finished in blue on the steering wheel clasp as well. Even away from the vehicle, owners of 20th Anniversary Golf R models will be reminded of the uniqueness of the limited-edition model by the key fob, which features an “R” logo that is finished in blue.

    The 20th Anniversary Edition will go on sale in this fall, and will have an MSRP of $44,940 for the manual transmission model and $45,740 for the 7-speed DSG.

  • Another two victories for Volkswagen: ID.3 and new Golf steal the awards at the New Car Awards event

    The jury at the event gave the “Best Small Company Car” to the ID.3 and paid tribute to the vehicle’s advanced drivetrain system and overall futuristic design and concept.

    Steve Fowler, Editorial Director at Auto Express, said: “The company car class is changing fast, and no firm has reacted faster to the upheaval than Volkswagen. Not that long ago diesel dominated this sector, but with Benefit-in-Kind bills now favoring the lowest-emissions vehicles, in particular, EVs, drivers, and fleet managers have been clamoring to make the switch to electric power – and few cars make more sense in the corporate car park than the ID.3.”

  • A quck revision of the Golf R lineup: what makes the model so beloved?

    2021 Volkswagen Golf RFor about 20 years, the Volkswagen Golf R and the predecessor, Golf R32 have represented the golden standard for sporty hatchback performance. When one takes a look at the history of the lineup, there’s a considerable change in the design of the models, however, the passion and precision remain the same. Let’s check out more, shall we?

    2002: Volkswagen Golf R32 (Mk IV)

    This is the first production Golf that wears the famous “R” badge from VW Racing and was unveiled in Madrid back in 2002, following the concept that was debuted a year earlier. The vehicle was specially created to compete in rally races.

    The Golf R32 showcased numerous advanced technologies and complex design concepts. The engine is a 3.2-liter VR6 with 240hp and linked to a performance-focused 4Motion AWD system that can send power only to the rear axle when needed.

    2005: Golf R32 (Mk V)

    With this particular model, the power output rose to 250hp and additional changes contributed to agile performance. The R32 now accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 6.2 seconds and is geared with a refined DSG gearbox. In terms of interior, the MK V was geared with near-luxury components and featured a neat and cozy ambiance.

    2009: Golf R (Mk VI)

    Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in 2009, the MK VI revealed an advanced 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder engine that generates a total of 265hp, mated to an even further revised 4Motion system. Also, VW team debuted a new signature blue paint for the vehicle, known as Rising Blue Metallic. Offered in two- and four-door models, the vehicle was available with a center exhaust and 6-speed manual gearbox only.

    2013: Golf R (Mk VII)

    This model was again unveiled in Frankfurt and arrived in the US in 2015. The power rose to 288hp and the car was available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DSG, and later with an exclusive 7-speed DSG. Tech-wise the MK VII features a DCC adaptive damping system and many more neat functions.

    2021: Golf R (Mk VIII)

    The upcoming iteration of the “R” lineup will not only be the most powerful, but also the most advanced in terms of utility systems. The heart of the beast is a 2.0-liter EA888 TSI unit that generates a total of 315hp and 310lb-ft of torque. There will also be a newly developed torque-vectoring 4Motion AWD system and Vehicle Dynamics Manager, both fine-tuned at the Nürburgring Nordshleife race track.

  • A VW collectioner shows his unique Golf Rallye

    1983 Volkswagen Golf RallyeBack in the 1980s, Steve Smith’s love for Golf was ignited – back in the day, his older brother bought a 1983 MK1 Golf, which made Steve fall in love with the vehicle’s performance presence.

    Slowly, the two brothers started collecting vehicles and by 1999 they owned a total of five GTI models. Today, Steve’s collection includes 17 VW vehicles, many of which are Golfs. At the moment, Steve’s most treasured is a dark blue 1989 Golf Rallye.

    In the late 1980s, VW created the Rallye lineup to compete at the 1990 motorsport competition in Brussels, Belgium. The model was largely distinctive from other Golf models due to the box-flared wheel arches and rectangular projector headlamps. In terms of the drivetrain system, the vehicle adopts a four-wheel-drive platform and cable-shifted gearbox with a G60-supercharged power unit, generating 160hp.

    What makes Steve’s vehicle special, however, is that it is a part of a limited production lineup – there are only 5000 units sold. Also, there were only two units officially sent to the US for testing.

    While Smith enjoys owning one of the rarest VW Golf vehicles in the US, he says that owning such a vehicle brings tons of responsibilities, but also rewarding experiences.

    I love showing it to people who may not have heard of the Rallye but can immediately tell it’s a Golf and are curious, he said.  And the people who do realize how rare it is always come up to talk to me about it. It creates a great connection between us Volkswagen fans.

    Although 17 vehicles sound like a good number for a collection, Smith has already laid eyes on a new Golf model: the limited-edition MK2 with a G60-supercharged engine.

  • New Golf R: a quick overview

    The latest Golf R can also be specified with an optional Performance Package upgrade which increases the top speed of 270km/h and adds a sexy and more prominent rear spoiler for extra downforce on the rear axle. Also included are the 19-inch wheels in the Estoril design and two selectable driving modes – Special and Drift.

    In both models, stock or R Performance, the accelerator pedal has been crafted in such a way that enhances the feel of control over the acceleration process. This contributes to more comfortable and pleasurable driving experience and also gives an advantage when the driver drifts on snow and ice, or even on asphalt. In both vehicle variants, the gearbox is fine-tuned and calibrated to ensure that the 420Nm of output keeps a relatively high rpm.

    Also, for the first time since the introduction of DSG, the gearbox stays in manual mode if the driver has chosen so. The unwitting switching back to automatic mode is now a thing of the past. As it seems, this new tech approach is highly praised by professional racers who now benefit of more precise and secure control over the entire vehicle.

  • Volkswagen Golf MK8 GTE

    The new Golf has been on the market since the end of 2019. And although VW has completely detached its compact electric car in the form of the ID.3, electrification also plays a major role in the eighth generation of the classic bestseller. Several versions have different levels of electrical assistance, with the top of the range being the Golf GTE with plug-in hybrid drive, which has been available since summer 2020. Not least because of its dynamic design and sporty look, this is a perfect basis for tuning projects. This is proven by this example, which Urban Motors equipped with a set of high-quality light alloy wheels from Barracuda Racing Wheels.

    The team from Eschweiler near Aachen installed the Project 3.0 wheels from the Ultralight Series, which are very light thanks to the flow forming process, on the axles of the compact class. They measure 8.5×20 inches, are equipped with 235/35 tires and wear a black milled finish. The milled edges of the spokes are wrapped in blue – so they go perfectly with the factory color accents of the GTE and the also partially blue wrapping that Urban Motors applied to the gray body.

    A supplementary lowering should of course not be missing at this point. The Golf was given a KW Variant 3 coilover kit that reduced its ground clearance by around 45 millimeters and promised even more dynamic handling.

    On request, Urban Motors can also offer performance enhancements and other tuning components in addition to the work carried out on the vehicle presented.

  • Volkswagen Group wins numerous awards at the Automotive Brand Contest

    2020 Volkswagen Group PortfolioVolkswagen team has dominated the Automotive Brand Contest 2020 and has secured a total of five awards in the automotive design segment. First of all, the ID.3, VW’s all-electric model that shows the future, was named “Best of Best” in at least two categories. Second, the new Golf and the ID. SPACE VIZZION concept was also among this year’s award winners.

    Generally, ID.3 was recognized for its super-expressive exterior design concept and interior ambiance. Furthermore, the jury was impressed with the vehicle’s advanced drivetrain system that has proven not only efficient but also capable of tackling down numerous road challenges. Being one of Volkswagen’s leading models, ID.3 has received exclusively positive feedback both from brand enthusiasts and since its debut has taken home as many prizes and awards. Furthermore, the ID.SPACE VIZZION, the seventh model in the ID. the lineup has taken the first prize at the “Concepts” category.

  • The most authentic, original and best preserved Golf goes on sale!

    1979 Volkswagen Golf GTIA super-rare 1979 Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.6 Mk1 Series 1 in museum quality condition with “Unicorn” status will go under the hammer with leading online classic car auction house, The Market.

    This super-early right-hand drive, 4-speed variant has covered less than 17,000 miles from new in the hands of only three registered owners, making it possibly the best preserved and most original and most well-known Golf GTI Mk 1 on the market at the moment. In fact, this particular vehicle is so famous that there’s even a Corgi Vanguards Classics 1:43 scale model, which is an exact miniature replica of the vehicle itself!

    Originally purchased for for £5,132.39 in September 1979, the classic VW is expected to sell between £31,000 and £42,000 when it goes under the hammer with online auctioneer The Market, beginning on 19th March and closing on 25th of March.

    The vehicle also comes with its famous “ENT 847V” registration plate. This particular serial number has featured in numerous specialist magazines. Finished in Black with silver and black tartan seats, the vehicle is complete with numerous original and rare features. These include the small and early-type rear light cluster, non-locking fuel cap, Wofsburg three spoke steering wheel, genuine Wolfsburg mud flaps, Toric T-76 buckle-less seat belts and golf ball gear knob. The 4-speed gearbox model was only available for three months in late 1979 before the 5-speed gearbox system was introduced.

    Typically for the lineup, the car doesn’t have a sunroof, rear fog lamp, radio, aerial or passenger door wing mirror, all of which are staple features today, but expensive options back in the day.

    The Golf was treated to recommissioning by renowned Mk1 Golf expert Crazy Quiffs of Wallingford at the cost of £7,000. This included strip of the underside of the car and replacement of dampers, brake components and fuel lines in order to ensure safety. The engine was also removed for cleaning, the gearbox rebuilt and the clutch assembly replaced.

  • Volkswagen presents new 2020 Golf lineup

    2020 Volkswagen GolfVolkswagen will unveil the eighth-generation Golf GTI at the Geneva Motor Show, alongside the GTE and diesel GTD models. The new vehicles offer more power, next-gen driver interface, and more contemporary design. Neat!

    Exterior Design

    The new family member proudly showcases a dynamic front-end with new LED headlights design that is positioned low down and form a striking crossbar in conjunction with the radiator grille. Additionally, towards the top of the hood, there’s a narrow line, which contributes to that sporty expression. The color of the line depends on the model – red for the GTI, blue for the GTE and silver for the GTD.

    Additional features include a large honeycomb-pattern grille, framed on the outside by black applique, with a striking wing-like design on the sides. The GTI insignia also includes the optional foglights, which are integrated into an X-shape into the air intake grille.

    The side catches the eye with neat 17-inch Richmond aluminum-alloy wheels, which can be changed for the optional 18-inch and 19-inch rim variants. Through them the new red brake calipers can be seen. GTI and GTD versions carry a unique badge with their respective lettering on the side of the front fender. All models feature wider side skirt sills covered in black and a race-car-style splitter design.

    At the rear new Golf showcases new LED taillight clusters, a sporty diffuser, and an exclusive tailpipe design – the GTI has one tailpipe on the left and one on the right, GTD has a double tailpipe on the left, while there is no visible tailpipe for the GTE.

    Interior design

    Engineers have crafted a distinctive and dynamic interior with numerous details – the sporty steering wheel features three silver double spokes and recessed Wolfsburg emblem, the golf ball shifter knob, and tartan GTI sport seats.

    Although the vehicle features tons of new electronic features, there are also many classic details that the engineers and designers decide to retain within the new Golf. The final result is simply beautiful – the fine balance between technologically-advanced machine and conventional utilities have been reached.

    The Innovision Cockpit extends upwards upon opening the doors in the Golf GTI, GTE and GTD. It is a blend of the top-of-the-range version of the 10.25-inch Digital Cocpit and the 10-inch navigation system. Sweet!

    Drivetrain system

    The new GTI is powered by an EA888 evo4 245hp 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine. The maximum available torque is 273pound-feet. This unit is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

    On the other hand, GTE features a plug-in hybrid drivetrain system consists of an EA211 150hp 1.4-liter turbocharged power unit, and a 114hp electric motor mated to a 6-speed DSG system. The maximum torque that the engines can deliver is 295lb-ft.

    GTD, the long-range sporty Golf, features an RA288 evo series 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a total output of 200hp and 295lb-ft of torque. What is notable for this particular lineup is the new SCR catalytic converters set with dual AdBlue injection that altogether greatly reduce nitrogen oxide emissions compared to predecessor models. Sweet!

  • Volkswagen presents new Golf 8 lineup!

And now VW proudly presents the new family member – Golf 8. The vehicle marks the next page of lineup’s evolution and offers an electrified drivetrain system, digitalized interior, and advanced engineering solutions. Let’s check out more, shall we?

    In terms of technologies, the main one concerning the new Golf 8 is the hybrid system. Being the first model to be available with a choice of five hybrid drive options, new Golf debuts a 48V lithium-ion battery and new eTSI engines. This means that fuel consumption is cut down with nearly 10 percent and the overall agility and road behavior are dramatically boosted. The output levels are measured at 81 kW / 110 PS, 96 kW / 130 PS and 110 kW / 150 PS. Additionally, VW engineers have included neat innovations! Such is the twin-dosing technology with two SCR catalytic convertors.

    Of course, as a contemporary machine, the new generation of the best-seller can also be specified with a plug-in system. The efficient systems ensure 150 kW / 204 PS and 180 kW / 245 PS respectively. Both versions come with a revised 13kWh lithium-ion battery and can cover a range of up to 60 kilometers with a single charge. Neat!

    In terms of utility gadgets and features, Golf 8 comes with online connectivity unit (OCU), which includes integrated eSIM links to “We Connect” and “We Connect Plus” online functions and services. The vehicle also brings Car2X: this is a function that signals from the traffic infrastructure and information from other vehicles up to 800 meters away. The Golf 8 also shares this information with other Car2X models. Neat! In fact, swarm intelligence is becoming more and more popular technology and as it seems, it will start a new phase in the world of traffic safety.
