  • Opel Astra Electric

The new Opel Astra Electric and Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric will electrify customers. Like all Astra variants, they not only impress with their bold and clear design, but also with their responsible performance. The new Astra Electric conveys pure locally emission-free driving fun. The electric motor delivers 115 kW/156 hp and a powerful 270 Newton meters of maximum torque – both available from the first touch of the accelerator pedal ensuring brisk starts and convincing acceleration. And while many other electric cars are limited to 150 km/h or 160 km/h, the new Astra Electric has a top speed of 170 km/h. Depending on driving preferences, Astra Electric drivers can choose between the three modes Eco, Normal and Sport.

The energy is stored in a 54 kWh lithium-ion battery. The 102 battery cells are housed in 17 modules and ensure that the new Astra Electric can cover up to 416 kilometres locally emission-free in accordance with WLTP1. The engineers attached great importance to efficient packaging and were able to ensure an exemplary range with a compact battery size. The new Astra Electric requires just 12.7 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometres (14.9 kWh according to WLTP3), making it not only the perfect, efficient vehicle for everyday use, but also an ideal companion that saves time on longer journeys – as a five-door model or as a Sports Tourer estate. Even when the battery-electric Astra needs to be recharged, this only means a short “pit stop” at a charging point. The Astra Electric can be charged to 80 percent of the battery capacity in around 30 minutes at a 100 kW direct current fast charging station. In addition, the all-electric Astra is equipped as standard with a three-phase 11 kW onboard charger for the wall box at home.

The batteries are practically housed in the underbody – so no space for passengers and luggage is lost in the interior. Even with the rear seats up, the Astra Sports Tourer Electric offers 516 litres of luggage space in the boot – with the seats folded down, the capacity increases to up to 1,553 litres. Another advantage: The low position of the battery also gives the Astra Electric and the Astra Sports Tourer Electric a safe and solid position on the road, as is typical for Opel.

    Interior

The interior also provides a particularly intense driving experience: the ergonomic Active Sport seats, optionally available in Alcantara, offer Astra Electric drivers and passengers the highest level of seating comfort à la Opel. The seats, which have been certified by Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. (AGR; Campaign for Healthier Backs), offer excellent lateral stability and a wide range of manual and electric adjustment options. In this way, the driver feels even more firmly integrated into the vehicle and experiences a unique feeling at the steering wheel.

The fully digital Pure Panel with two large 10-inch widescreen displays also takes the driver into a modern cockpit world. The latest generation of intuitive human-machine interface displays all important functions such as battery charge status or range, while important settings such as climate control can still be easily adjusted at the touch of a button. And with the large E-HUD head-up display and natural voice recognition, drivers’ eyes can stay focused on the road and the traffic situation. Numerous assistance systems, from front collision warning with automatic emergency braking to active lane keep assist, drowsiness detection and rear cross traffic alert to semi-automated lane change, are bundled in the new Intelli-Drive 2.0, among others, and further enhance safety – as does the class-leading, adaptive Intelli-Lux LED® Pixel Light with a total of 168 LED elements.

The new Astra Electric conveys a direct, dynamic driving feel at first glance. Bold and pure in its design, the all-electric Astra comes with the Opel Vizor brand face including an extra sporty front bumper design in every trim level. Another eye-catcher are the standard 18-inch alloy wheels in diamond-cut or completely black finish. Here, too, the new Opel Astra Electric makes it unmistakably clear: the Opel compact class is opening a new chapter – emotional, electrifying and, for the first time, fully electric.

  • Opel Astra GSe

GSe returns! Following the announcement that Opel will revive GSe as a new sub-brand for dynamic, electrified models, the brand with the Blitz today released advance information and images of the first new GSe models – the new Opel Astra GSe and the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer GSe.

As state-of-the-art plug-in hybrids, available as Astra Sports Tourer estate as well as Astra five-door hatchback, the newcomers will offer the optimum balance between ride comfort and performance-oriented handling combined with responsibility for the environment.

“The new Astra GSe and new Astra Sports Tourer GSe are the ideal cars for launching our dynamic new sub-brand, in full alignment with our strategy to become an all-electric brand by 2028”, said Opel CEO, Florian Huettl.

With an impressive system power output of 165 kW/225 hp and maximum torque of 360 Newton metres (WLTP combined fuel consumption: 1.2-1.1 l/100 km, CO2 emissions 26-25 g/km; preliminary values) the new Astra GSe and Astra Sports Tourer GSe will match the best in their respective classes for launch from a standstill, acceleration and maximum speed.

In addition, the newcomers will set a new benchmark for driver engagement. In comparison to their Astra siblings, the GSe models are even more agile and even more precise; the steering, suspension and brakes respond immediately and predictably to every driver input.

The German carmaker has achieved the performance-oriented handling characteristics by equipping the new Opel Astra GSe models with a dedicated chassis, lowered by 10 millimetres. Compared with their immediate rivals, the newcomers will deliver superior stability during cornering, under braking and – like every Opel – while driving at high speed on the Autobahn.

The sporty calibration of the steering is GSe-specific, while the unique springs and oil-filled dampers of the front and rear suspension are specially tuned not only for dynamic driving but also for comfort. The dampers feature KONI FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) technology, which enables different damping characteristics at high frequencies (suspension control) versus low frequencies (body control). The ESP settings are also exclusive to GSe models, with the activation threshold adjusted upwards to match the dynamic driving behaviour.

Purposeful: Bold and pure Astra-design plus signature GSe styling cues

The new-generation Opel Astra is a bold and pure design statement for the brand; the signature styling cues of the GSe give it an even more purposeful appearance. From the outside, the design of the 18-inch light-alloy wheels – inspired by the acclaimed, all-electric Manta GSe concept – the specific front bumper and fascia, and the GSe emblem on the tailgate, leave no doubts as to the dynamic GSe character. Inside, the sporty ambitions are highlighted by the Alcantara-trimmed performance front seats; they are not only unique to the GSe, they further extend Opel’s long-standing reputation for superior seat ergonomics – especially in the Astra’s compact class – thanks to the AGR certification.

The Opel “GSe” label was traditionally an abbreviation of “Grand Sport Einspritzung” (Grand Sport Injection) as on the Opel Commodore GS/E and the Opel Monza GSE. GSe is now Opel’s top-of-the-range, sporty sub-brand, standing for “Grand Sport electric”. By combining “fun-to-drive” values with the option of locally emissions-free mobility, Opel GSe models will redefine the performance Zeitgeist.

  • Vauxhall Mokka

    2021 Vauxhall Mokka new1

The exterior of the all-new Vauxhall Mokka is not only bold but features a highly aerodynamically efficient design that improves efficiency and cuts down emissions.

With a drag coefficient (cD) of just 0.32, the Mokka features one of the lowest drag rates in its market segment and joins the brand’s existing aero-champions, from the record-breaking Calibra (0.26 cD) to the current class-leaders, Astra (0.26 cD) and Insignia (0.25 cD). The new aerodynamic design cuts drag at motorway speeds by up to 16% compared to the previous model.

Due to the growing need to lower CO2 emissions, efficient aerodynamics are increasingly important in the automotive industry as well as among customers. Low drag means that the car needs less energy to move, which in turn results in lower fuel consumption and emissions.

The Vauxhall Mokka’s aerodynamic design was developed in the wind tunnel of Stuttgart University’s Research Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines. The new Mokka achieves a lowest drag factor of just 0.32 cD.

“Vauxhall has been a strong leader in aerodynamics for decades and our new Mokka continues this long tradition, says Marcus Lott, Managing Director Engineering.

“Sophisticated technologies such as air curtains and an active cooling shutter represent the state of the art in automotive drag reduction. With its stunning design, the new Mokka also proves that standout looks and a highly efficient shape are far from mutually exclusive.”

Bold and pure design at the front enhances aerodynamics
The basis for the high aerodynamic efficiency is the new Mokka’s frontal area of just 2.27 metres2, which is enhanced by the pure and bold design. With the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and attention to detail in the wind tunnel, Vauxhall’s aero experts chiselled down to the excellent drag coefficient by fine-tuning every detail that helps improve the aerodynamics.

The engineers optimised the design of the new Mokka’s characteristic Vauxhall Vizor front end, as well as the shapes of the A-pillars and the exterior mirrors. In addition, cladding covering the bottom of the engine compartment and the underside of the body improves the airflow beneath the car.

The new Mokka displays fins at the sides of the tailgate and an elongated spoiler at the rear edge of the roof, in order to reduce the separation that causes drag. In addition, the spoiler lowers aerodynamic lift on the rear axle, which further improves straight-line stability, especially at higher speeds.

Air curtains and active shutters: innovations for higher efficiency and lower drag
Other major sources of drag are the wheels, tyres and wheelhouses. The new Vauxhall Mokka features innovative air curtains that increase aerodynamic efficiency in these areas. An air curtain is an integrated duct on each side of the front end that creates a tall, thin jet of air across the face of the front wheel and tyre. The air curtain directs the flow smoothly across the wheel openings, decreasing the amount of wake and separation.

The new Mokka also benefits from an active front-face shutter that further reduces drag and improves fuel efficiency by automatically closing the frontal opening when cooling air is least needed. Until recently, this innovation has been more common on more expensive cars from higher segments.

When closed, the shutter system enhances aero performance by redirecting airflow around the front of the vehicle and down the sides, rather than through the less aero efficient engine compartment.

The results of these efforts are impressive: compared with the previous model iteration, which had a drag coefficient of 0.35, CO2 emissions in the WLTP cycle are up to 9.0 g/km lower, while drag at motorway speeds has been reduced by 16%.

The aerodynamically optimised new Vauxhall Mokka is the first to wear the new Vizor front end – a feature which will be found across future Vauxhall models – as well as the redesigned Vauxhall Griffin logo and the centrally positioned nameplate on the tailgate. It is also the first Vauxhall with the Pure Panel and a fully digitised cockpit – further features which will make their way across the Vauxhall model line-up. In addition, the new Mokka is the first Vauxhall available from the start of the sales with both efficient petrol and diesel engines, as well as a fully electric variant, the Mokka-e.

  • JMS tuning

    2020 JMS tuning

As a result of the global corona pandemic, a year with practically no tuning fairs and meetings. After the Tuning World Bodensee in Friedrichshafen and the PS Days in Hanover, also the undisputed highlight of the year of the refinement and customization industry, the Essen Motor Show, was canceled, so that the community in this extraordinary season – apart from a few smaller events – practically only could come together online. How relatively this “only” can be rated, however, was shown by the tuning specialists at JMS Fahrzeugteile by hosting a mega-tuning event on the last Saturday of November and sending it out into the world via a professional live stream from the large forging hall of Motorworld Manufaktur Metzingen.

In front of the great backdrop of the historic industrial building, JMS Managing Director Jochen Schweiker and especially presenter William De Fensfoster from d-fens.tv presented products and project vehicles from JMS customers, suppliers and business partners to the livestream viewers – even some world premieres were unveiled.

For example, the suspension experts from KW suspensions rolled a Lamborghini Huracán with the brand new Variant 5 coilover suspension into the colorful spotlight of the forge hall, which was also equipped with an exclusive Novitec finish: In addition to a Torado N-Largo kit, the Italian fighting bull was wearing 9×20- and 12.5×21-inch rims with tires of the dimensions 245/30R20 and 325/25R21.

ST suspensions, also a brand of the KW universe, presented the ST XTA Plus 3 coilover kit with 3-way adjustment as a world premiere. This was already installed in a Focus ST with 19-inch Motec MCR2 ultralight wheels.

One of the program highlights was undoubtedly the world premiere of the two new wheel designs from the Barracuda Racing Wheels brand sold by JMS: The new “Dragoon” design from the Barracuda Ultralight Series was already installed on a VW Golf, while the Nissan Silvia drift car from the Drift Team “Driftinglele ” rolled on the new Barracuda motorsport rim “Summa”. Both wheels will be available in three different colors from next spring.

JMS Fahrzeugteile presented various tuning conversions, the focus of which was on different segments, such as chassis technology, exhaust technology, body kits, wheels and much more. Particularly impressive: vehicles created as joint projects, for example in cooperation with KW, Eisenmann, Friedrich Motorsport, Senner Tuning, TR Exclusive, cardiologie and Schwabenfolia, such as a BMW M2 Competition, a Ford Focus ST or a 360 hp Cupra Leon ST.

The exhaust gas experts from Eisenmann Exhaust provided the audience with technical information about their exhaust systems and presented a 3-series BMW of the current generation G20 with Oxigin alloy wheels and a Z4 with gasoline particle filter as project vehicles. As a world premiere, Eisenmann had brought new tailpipe variants.

The “Multimedia” tuning segment was not neglected either: the Gladen car hi-fi specialists presented various components, illustrated by vehicles such as the BMW X5, Tesla Model 3, Hyundai i30 N or Mercedes-AMG A 35.

RaceChip presented an increase in performance via a chip tuning box for the new Golf 8 and provided interesting information about the product range.

As a matter of fact, this feature is was a highlight of ground-breaking concept cars from both Vauxhall and sister brand Opel in the mid-1960s, and comes to show the link between now and then. Vauxhall introduced the XVR at the Geneva Show in 1966, while Opel – the Experimental GT at Frankfurt the year before. So, are we to witness similarities in design?

One thing we are sure of is that the GT Concept won’t be in any way old-fashioned or retro. However, the cars will share the same design philosophy which stands for ‘ultra-modern, minimalistic and uncompromising with a sculptural shape ’.

As for red tire of the Opel GT Concept we have seen in the previous video (the second one below), it pays homage in an avant-garde way to the MotoClub 500, a futuristic Opel motorcycle from 1928 that wore red rubber. This new concept undoubtedly promises an innovative approach to the well-known Opel design.

The world premiere of the OpelGT Concept will happen at the Geneva International Motor Show from March 3rd until March 13th.
