  • Public Feedback Makes Nissan IDx Freeflow IDx NISMO Reality

    2013-Tokyo-Motor-Show-Nissan-IDx-Freeflow-shadow2013-Tokyo-Motor-Show-Nissan-IDx-Freeflow-medium

If you think that the Nissan IDx Freeflow and IDx Nismo on display at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show are tributes to a long-lost past of boxy cars and general sensibility, you’d be wrong. What you see before you is a product of collaboration between Nissan and the masses. The internet masses that is:

“It was designed to appeal to “digital natives,” the generation born after 1990, and integrates their feedback into the creation process. Nissan thinks this approach could have real applications in the near future.”

So no nostalgia was involved in the making of these IDx concepts (ID – identity; x – a “variable representing the new values and dreams born through communication”)? If that really is the case, then we applaud the new age thinking of simple-three box designs and “no nonsense steering wheels”. Let’s face it, these two look brilliant. Nothing too flashy, There isn’t an X-Box bolted to the dashboard and we can’t imagine there is a highly sophisticated vehicle management control somewhere in there that will keep you prisoner for weeks for trying to set the clock. No, in fact, the IDx Freeflow uses an analog clock to tell the time. One thing, however, doesn’t make sense to us – denim covers for the seats, denim patterns here and there? Must have been the work of either hipsters or of someone definitely not born in the 90s. Also, we are not sure what they mean when they say that the cabin has been designed to look like a living room. At 4.1 meters long, just 1.7 meters wide, and 1.3 meters high, the Freeflow is not what a real estate agent would call a bargain. Keep in mind that in addition to four people, the IDx Freeflow needs to accommodate an engine and a gearbox as well. The Nismo Idx, on the other hand is the more racing-oriented twin. An even more simplistic interior is ballenced out by a rather flamboyant exterior that, Nissan admit, has borrowed “liberally from memorable vehicles of yesteryear and the present”. Still, that spirit of the past is said to have come from video games rather then from the real thing.

Not that it’s relevant (because these are case studies and there are no plans for production), but Nissan say that it would be possible to mate a 1.2-to-1.5L petrol engine to one of their CVT in order to form the IDx base drivetrain – sensible, economically, revvy and smart. ‘Boo’ for not actually doing something about it at this point.

  • 2015 Nissan GT-R Recieves Minor Updates

    2015-Nissan-GT-R-shadow2015-Nissan-GT-R-medium

We are having a Nissan GT-R hat trick today (1 and 2) with this latest release from the Japanese company: the MY 2015 Nissan GT-R – now with an updated “ride comfort, more refinement and benchmark fit and finish.”

The suspension has been fine-tuned to reduce load fluctuation between the four wheels, thus increasing grip and stability. The electronic control of the shock-absorber valves has also been optimized to keep the wheels more consistently on the ground. The front stabilizer spring rates and bush links have also been modified. It’s not all in the name of performance though – the ride, Nissan say, is also relaxing and comfortable. The standard tires that will go along with the model are now Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT 600 DSST CTT, measuring at 255/40ZRF20 at the front and 285/35ZRF20 at the back.

Visual touches on the outside are also present. Take the color for example. This is called Gold Flake Red Pearl and it has tiny specks of gold…tinted glass inside it. Much light has been shed on, well, the lights – efficient, high-intensity, multi-LED headlights. The clever bit about them is that they incorporate Nissan’s AFS (Adaptive Front lightning System) – the angle of the light beam automatically adjusts in accordance to the speed of the vehicle. The rear lights also, erm, form coherent circles of illumination. What was the illumination beforehand?

Inside, one has the option to go with three color schemes which include a completely new one with pale ivory shades. The steering wheel sports some leather, while the seats are part-aniline leather and are embellished with stitched accents in tradition with the whole of the GT family.

Here’s a tasteful clip of the GT history so far:

  • 2013 Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 Series for Sale

    Nissan-GT-R-Nismo-GT3-shadowNissan-GT-R-Nismo-GT3-medium

If you saw  today’s news about the Nissan Nismo GT-R and thought: “Yes, but does it conform to FIA GT3 regulations?” Well, sorry but it doesn’t. Funny you should ask, however, because here’s one that does exactly that. It’s the 2013 Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3. The best thing is, you can now own it. That is if you have $397,204 laying around. And that’s without tax.

Relying on data gathered from the 2012 model, Nissan’s engineers have managed to squeeze every drop of performance from this GT-R without really breaking any rules. The timing of the camshaft has been improved, the moving components of the engine have been made even more durable and the aerodynamics have been tweaked: canards were added to the front and the front fender louvers were enlarged. The positioning of the rear wing was optimized. The bottom line is – 3.8 V6 engine with over 543 hp and 637 Nm of torque. Yes, it’s not as much as the road going Nismo GT-R, but this one weights just 1,300 kilograms (despite having a metal, 5,5-inch 4-plate clutch disk). And the tyres? 330/710-18 on all four wheels.

Nissan will only make you one once you’ve ordered it. If the orders exceed their capacity you might end up empty-handed. Time to check your bank account?

  • Nissan Nismo GT-R Revealed

    2014-Nissan-GT-R-Nismo-shadow2014-Nissan-GT-R-Nismo-medium

Hot news from Nismo, Nissan’s in-house performance division. Tingle with excitement as today was the official reveal of the latest Nissan GT-R Nismo – the fastest one to date:

“With a 7:08.679 lap time, we can authoritatively say that the Nissan GT-R Nismo* holds the volume production car lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschliefe, which is the gold standard of high performance achievement.” – says Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.

Under the hood, the 3.8-liter V6 VR38DETT engine has been buffed to 600 hp thanks to GT3-grade, large diameter turbochargers, a new fuel pump, and some optimization of the ignition timing in each cylinder. The suspension also finds its roots in Nismo’s GT3 racing series. Think custom-developed Bilstein DampTronic dampers with three settings of stiffness – Comfort, Normal and R. Surely, that lap time would not have been possible without some clever tinkering with the aerodynamics. That’s why we have a front bumper, engine undercover, and a carbon rear spoiler that add 100 kg more downforce (at 300 km/h) when compared to the stock 2014 Nissan GT-R. At the same time, the drag coefficient has remained low at Cd 0.26.

The suspension also finds its roots in Nismo’s GT3 racing series. Think custom-developed Bilstein DampTronic dampers with three settings of stiffness – Comfort, Normal and R. At the back, a hollow anti-roll bar with a radius of 17.3 mm ensures rigidity at all times. In fact, the whole bodyshell has been stiffened up through adhesive bonding and spot welding. To round off the outside, the Nismo people have fitted four sticky Dunlop tires (front: 255/40 ZRF20; rear 285/35 ZRF20) on GT500-inspired, 6-spoked wheels. Available colors will include: Brilliant White Pearl, Meteor Flake Pearl Black, Ultimate Metallic Silver, Vibrant Red, and an exclusive for this model Dark Matte Grey. 2014-Nissan-GT-R-Nismo-medium-2

Yes, inside you find a sense of luxury thanks to the Alcantra-dressed wheel and red stitches here and there, but the carbon-fiber-backed RECARO front seats suggest that the Nismo GT-R is no joy ride. No, this car was made to beat down stopwatches to a pulp and then leave the track unapologetically on its own.

  • 2014 Nissan Qashqai Finally Revealed [VIDEO]

2014 Nissan Qashqai has been finally revealed today. The second generation of the model was unveiled during a 3D social media digital mapping show in London. At the event, the design of the car was revealed via images which were submitted by more than 2,500 people. These images represent the best of technology innovation. Then they came together to form the shape of the all-new Qashqai.

2015 Qashqai comes to enhance Nissan’s crossover leadership position. It will go on sale in January 2014. In the new SUV are included premium technologies, enhanced dynamics and a revised visual appearance.

The second generation model is 20mm wider, 49mm longer and 15mm lower than the current one. Yet despite this reduction in height, front and rear headroom levels have actually increased by 10mm and the raised driving position remains.

This gives it dynamic and sleek stance, while keeping the compact dimensions and raised driving position. Some of the distinctive features included here are clamshell-style bonnet, a comprehensive suite of advanced technology comprising of Front Collision Avoidance, Driver Attention Support and Traffic Sign Recognition and Intelligent Park Assist.

Other innovations included here is the new powertrain range, which is wider and more efficient than ever. Each engine utilizes a turbocharger to reduce capacity, emissions and fuel consumption while maintaining excellent performance with class-leading CO2 emissions – from only 99g/km.

The fuel efficiency is additionally improved by the reduction of the weight of the vehicle. It is 40kg lighter than the previous generation. In addition, the four-wheel drive ALL-MODE 4×4-i versions will be offered with a choice of six-speed manual or all-new Xtronic transmissions.

The interior of the vehicle embodies versatility in terms of material and design. The SUV offers greater occupant space and a larger luggage capacity enhanced by a variable floor system. The new Qashqai is based on the new CMF (Common Module Family) platform.

At the heart of the 2015 Qashqai lies a suite of innovations which not only significantly add to the safety and convenience, but also delivers exceptional value. Precisely, Nissan Safety Shield is a collection of features designed to improve the safety of occupants. It comprises of the following features: Front Collision Avoidance, Driver Attention Support, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Moving Object Detection and High Beam Assist.

Safety Shield is just the start of the Qashqai’s list of technology story. Other highlights included here are Chassis Control that enhances both ride and handling, Intelligent Parking Assist, that automatically measuring the size of an available parallel parking space, and new NissanConnect.

In addition to the main NissanConnect screen, there is also included a five-inch TFT colour display within the instrument panel. It offers information such as average and actual speeds, fuel economy, turn-by-turn navigation instructions, audio content, traffic sign recognition, Nissan Safety Shield, Chassis Control, eco driving advice, as well as tyre pressure information and torque distribution settings in 4WD mode.

Furthermore, Qashqai’s front end is equipped with LED daytime running lights. The utilization of LED instead of Xenon, delivers whiter, crisper light, and demands 50 per cent less power. The lights also display Nissan’s unique LED lighting signature that sweeps up from the centre of the car.

New technologies were also incorporated in the exterior design of the model. For instance, Nissan has been able to relocate the Qashqai’s radar behind the bumper facia to give the car a smoother look.

More importantly, the next generation Qashqai includes a range of supremely efficient and refined petrol and diesel. The line-up consists of four engines: two petrol and two diesel, with the option of two- or four-wheel-drive. Customers can also choose between manual and all-new Xtronic automatic transmissions.

First, the petrol 1.2 DIG-T unit drives through a six-speed manual transmission, and delivers 115 hp (85 kW) and 190 Nm (140 lb-ft) of torque. It emits 129g/km of CO2 and has a fuel consumption figure of 50.4mpg . It is equipped with Start/Stop ignition as standard, and benefits from a raft of fuel-saving technologies, including a regenerative alternator, optimised gear ratios and special low-viscosity oils.

Next, the 1.6 DIG-T produces 150 hp (110 kW) and 240Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque. Its fuel consumption is 50.4mpg, while CO2 emissions are 132g/km.

The first of the diesel engines is the 1.5 dCi which is capable of generating 110 hp (81 kW). In fact, this is the cleanest and most fuel-efficient engine ever offered in a Qashqai with CO2 emissions of just 99g/km. In terms of fuel consumption, the 1.5 dCi sets new standards in the crossover sector with an EU combined figure of just 74.3mpg.

At last, at the top of the Qashqai’s diesel range is the 1.6 dCi unit offered with the option of two and four-wheel-drive. It delivers 130 hp (96kW) and is one of the most advanced diesel powerplants in its sector. In two-wheel-drive manual form, the 1.6 dCi has CO2 emissions of 115g/km and combined fuel consumption figure of 64.2mpg. The Xtronic version emits 119g/km and returns 61.4mpg, while the four-wheel-drive manual version enjoys figures of 129g/km and 57.6mpg.

    2015 Qashqai technology highlights:

    • Nissan Safety Shield packages comprising:
    • Front Collision Avoidance
    • Driver Attention Support
    • Traffic Sign Recognition
    • Lane Departure Warning
    • Blind Spot Warning
    • Moving Object Detection
    • High Beam Assist
    • Chassis Control
    • Full LED headlamps which consume 50 per cent of the power of previous Xenon lamps
    • Intelligent Parking Assist
    • New NissanConnect with smartphone app integration
    • Around View Monitor

  • Nissan Introduces BladeGlider Concept

Nissan-BladeGlider-Concept-THUMBNissan BladeGlider is more than a concept because it combines brand’s proposal for the future direction of Nissan electric vehicle (EV) development as well as is an exploratory prototype of an upcoming production vehicle. As one can see the vehicle has special forms, which in particular were crafted to give the driver and passengers “sustainable exhilaration”.

This Nissan concept targets those who seek visceral driving and sustainability. The starting point for this project was a clean slate, led by Francois Bancon. The shape of the BladeGlider has defintely challenges the orthodoxy with its narrow front track.

The main focus in the architecture of this unique EV was in terms of engineering, and expecially – aerodynamics. The car achieves low drag (cdA) while generating road-hugging downforce. With its narrow, 1.0 metre lightweight front track and wide, stable rear track, the BladeGlider looks extremely radical.

However, this architecture is connected to the enhanced aerodynamics and balance. To be more precise, having the front wheels close together reduces drag and improves maneuverability for high-G cornering power, assisted by its 30/70 front/rear weight distribution ratio.

In addition, what also contributes for the better aerodynamics is the highly rigid but lightweight carbon-fibre underbody. The electric motors use Nissan’s innovative lithium-ion battery technology, which we have seen in Nissan LEAF. The battery modules are positioned low and towards the rear to enhance stability and handling. BladeGlider is a rear-drive performance car that exhibits a coherent and linear handling

Undoubtedly the exterior design of the BladeGlider envisions the EV future in very different way. Its tightly streamlined deltoid body comprises a structurally enhanced chassis wrapped in carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). The car is painted with pearlescent white colour.

The interior is designed for three persons and the seats there are in a triangular configuration with the driver centre-forward. Seating appointments feature special light and comfortable coverings with yellow fluorescent lines. The steering-wheel is reminiscent to those used in the aircraft, while the futuristic instrumentation technology completes the glider-like image. When one opens the door, the driver’s seat automatically slides laterally, which allow easy access to passenger seats.
