  • Hennessey GMC Yukon Denali HPE650 Runs 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds [VIDEO]

Hennessey-GMC-Yukon-Denali-THUMBThe latest video of Hennessey is exciting! Why? Because it shows how a big American vehicle can sprint as fast as some of the popular sportscars. Of course, behind this performance hides tuning company’s expertise and craftsmanship. The vehicle we are speaking about is the 2015 GMC Yukon Denali equipped with the 6.2 liter EcoTec3 V8 engine. The model recently got new Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission instead of its six-speed automatic.

With this production engine, and hence before the power-tuning, the vehicle was capable of producing 420 horsepower (313 kW) and 610 Nm (450 lb-ft) of torque. It achieves best 0 – 60 mph run of 7.0 seconds with the Four-Wheel Drive turned “OFF” and the Traction Control switched “ON”.

However, when the engine of the GMC Yukon Denali was supercharged and equipped with Hennessey HPE650 upgrade, the car shows incredible results. It covers the 0 – 60 mph acceleration sprint in mere 4.5 seconds! And the video below confirms that!

To be more precise, the refinement also results in better power output: 665 hp (489 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 892 Nm (658 lb-ft) of torque at 4,200 rpm. The HPE650 supercharged upgrade includes the following: 2.9 liter supercharger and high flow intercooling system, high flow cylinder heads, HPE camshaft and engine management calibration.

Of course all of the necessary gaskets, fluids and hardware were also provided as well as the dyno tuning and road testing. To show its uniqueness the car was equipped with serial-numbered dash and engine plaque, Hennessey and HPE650 exterior badging, supercharged badging and Hennessey embroidered headrests.

  • 2015 Yukon Denali Gets New Transmission

    2015-GMC-Yukon-Denali_thumb2015-GMC-Yukon-Denali_651

The new 2015 GMC Yukon Denali has gotten a new transmission that brings numerous benefits to the vehicle including but not limited to higher horsepower, better torque and improved highway fuel economy. The new transmission is fully automatic and features 8 gears.

Featured in the Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali the new Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission is connected to the vehicles’ 6.2-liter EcoTec V8 engines and retires the older and less fuel efficient 6-speed automatic gearbox used until now in the Denali. Thanks to the new more advanced transmission the EPA highway mileage estimate for the two-wheel drive Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali increases to 22 mpg (10.7 l/100 km) while the EPA city mileage estimate for the four-wheel drive Yukon Denali rises to 15 mpg (15.7 l/100 km). The combination between the new 8-speed automatic transmission and the 6.2-liter V8 engine delivers a segment-leading 420 horsepower (309 kW) and 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) of torque along with highway fuel economy that can rival many other 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines in competitive makes.

The new 8L90 transmission increases comfort by offering smaller steps between gears that allow the engine to efficiently leverage its peak power bands. The wider gearing spread also allows the use of a lower 3.23:1 rear axle ratio, which reduces engine speeds and fuel consumption, especially during highway cruising. Moreover the shift controls and solenoids of the 8L90 are more responsive and provide quicker shift times. A new torque converter also delivers smoother performance at low speeds, especially when carrying heavy loads or pulling trailers. Tow ratings – up to 8,400 pounds (3,814 kg) for the Yukon Denali and 8,100 pounds (3,677 kg) for the Yukon XL Denali – are unaffected by the addition of the eight-speed transmission.

The new gearbox is not the only new thing that the two models provide. The 2015 GMC Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali feature other convenience and connectivity improvements such as:

    • A new hands-free power liftgate, which can be opened and closed by simply passing a foot beneath the rear bumper
    • A wireless charging surface for WPC (Qi) or PMA (Powermat) compatible mobile devices integrated into the design of the center console lid. A list of compatible devices is located at gmtotalconnect.com
    • OnStar with 4G LTE, which provides in-car data connectivity and a Wi-Fi hotspot capable of connecting up to seven devices at one time
    • An enhanced GMC Intellilink system, which provides incoming ‘Text Message Alerts’ when paired to a compatible Bluetooth phone

Owners of 2015 Yukon and Yukon XL models can receive a tutorial on these new features through a new Yukon-specific application for tablet devices, which supplements the owner’s manual. The new Yukon app will be available for both Apple iOS and Android devices.

The updated 2015 Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali models are priced from USD 64,965 and USD 67,665 respectively, and are now available at dealers.

  • 2015 GMC Sierra Carbon Editions With New Sporty Looks

    2015-GMC-Sierra-Carbon-Edition-t2015-GMC-Sierra-Carbon-Edition-651

Knowing that most full size truck buyers end up customizing their pickups right of the dealership lot, GMC is keen on tapping into some of this market with special edition models. After introducing the Sierra all-terrain earlier this year, GMC has now announced the 2015 GMC Sierra Carbon Edition will be available for customers to order starting next month. Offered in three variations, the lowest priced version of this package is the standard Sierra Carbon Edition.

Starting with base 2015 Sierra double cab, the Sierra Carbon Edition brings a more ominous look with its black painted grill and carbon fiber body graphics on the hood and tailgate.
Moving up the the Sierra Carbon 29 Edition, this truck adds more features by only being offered in as SLE trim level and like the previous model, it to only comes in the double cab body configuration. As the 20, in its name might suggest, the big difference that sets this version apart is the exceptional 20-inch wheels.

Finally, the Carbon 22 Edition, available on crew cab or double cab models gets the same styling upgrades with the inclusion of the outstanding 22-inch wheels, featuring a five-spoke design and a black accent at finish. This model also comes with black tubular side steps, remote start, dual-zone climate control and fog lights.

The Carbon 22 Edition Sporting Z 71 with 4×4 badges does not seem to be losing any of its ruggedness by adding the sporty new package. The glory of the new Sierra lies within its strength and sophistication. But for customers wanting to make an even better impression, the Sierra Carbon Edition models are the answer.

Options for the 2015 GMC Sierra Carbon Edition includes choice between two and four-wheel drive. A 4.3-liter EcoTec3 V-6 engine is standard, and brings up about 285 hp (212 kW), 305 lb-ft (413 Nm) of torque, and EPA highway ratings up to 24 mpg US (28 UK) (9.8 l/100 km). A 355 hp (264 kW), 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8 is optional.

Pricing for the 2015 GMC Sierra Carbon Edition starts at $33,075 for the standard model, while for the Carbon 20 Edition starts at $38,275, and if that’s enough the pricing for Carbon 22 Edition starts at $42,270.

  • The Ill-fated Oldsmobile Diesel

    1978-Oldsmobile-98-THUMB1978-Oldsmobile-98-651

Sometimes automotive companies do silly things and the story of General Motor’s diesel V8 highlights one of the best (worst?). Here’s the story. During the mid-1970s, meeting new federal EPA emissions regulations was causing many issues for car manufacturers and their dealers. The solution, at least to some executives at General Motors, was to rush a series of diesel engines to the marketplace. This is because diesels were not subject to the same emissions requirements as gasoline engines. Besides Mercedes and Peugeot had both been quite successful selling diesel cars in the U.S. so why wouldn’t General Motors be? Though the new GM-designed diesel engines were destined for all the GM car divisions, the design responsibility fell to GM’s Oldsmobile group. Working at a frantic pace, the first Oldsmobile-built diesels hit the dealer lots in 1978, and there were problems. Oh boy, were there problems.

To begin with, Oldsmobile powertrain engineers based the design on the division’s existing 350-cubic-inch V8. It is an urban legend that GM engineers simply slapped new diesel heads on the standard 350 block and did little else. This is not the case by any stretch. The new block was reinforced substantially internally and was built of a sturdier cast-iron alloy; the blocks weren’t really the problem. The trouble came from the cylinder heads and the fuel system. In particular, the cylinder heads. They broke an awful lot resulting in massive problems for GMs dealer network.

To understand the GM diesel debacle it helps to understand a little about diesel technology. Diesel engines operate using a compression-ignition scheme. As gas is compressed, its temperature goes up, and, in the case of a diesel engine, it’s compressed until the diesel fuel in the combustion chamber ignites. This leads to much higher combustion chamber pressures than are present in a gasoline engine. Once again, much higher combustion chamber pressures than in a gasoline engine. Typically, diesel engines have more and stronger head bolts to compensate for the diesel’s higher cylinder pressure. The Oldsmobile diesel, however, maintained the same 10-bolt pattern and head bolts as gasoline engines so that common production tooling could be used for both the gasoline and diesel engines. This was a big mistake. There were also other issues with the engine: a fuel-pump timing chain that stretched and poor dealer service training, to name a few. And, even in good running order they were just plain loud, and belched quite a bit of smoke; all to provide acceleration that can best be described as modest.

Production of the Oldsmobile diesel lasted from 1978 and 1985 and it caused a class-action lawsuit that saw owners reimbursed for up to 80 percent of the cost of a replacement engine upon failure. The engines were so bad that they spurred legislators in several states to draft early lemon laws. Ultimately, Oldsmobile-built diesels ruined the American consumer’s appetite for diesels for almost 3 decades. Only now are diesels beginning to reenter the U.S. car market in small numbers—and most of those are from non-US manufacturers. This is quite unfortunate because diesel technology is robust, proven and can lead to tremendous fuel economy.

  • 2015 GMC Canyon Is The Most Agile Pickup

2015 GMC Canyon is a midsize pickup which offers great maneuverability. This is probably the top reasons for the growing popularity of the vehicle among the customers in the United States. The new Canyon offers the right size for those looking for a more agile pickup. In this way the customers will enjoy the convenience of this smaller size mid-sized pickup’s ability to easily fit in a garage, travel downtown areas of big cities, and navigate crowded parking lots.

2015 GMC Canyon is the smaller sibling of the 1500 Sierra, 2500 and 3500 Sierra Heavy Duty pickups. The short-bed crew cab is 212.7 inches long, which is exactly 17 inches shorter than a comparable Sierra 1500. The width of the Canyon measures 74.3 inches which is five inches narrower than Sierra and two inches wider than the Terrain compact SUV.

However, the smaller size of the vehicle does not mean a compromise in terms of functionality or capability. 2015 Canyon has a tight turning radius of around 41 feet or 12.6 meters. This makes it easier for the driver to maneuver when parking or backing into tight spots. In addition, the electric power steering also provides help in maneuverability.

GMC Canyon is powered by four versatile and efficient engines: the standard 2.5L I-4 unit, the optional 3.6L and V6. The last two units feature direct injection, variable valve timing and six-speed transmissions. The most powerful in the engine range is the 2.5L Duramax Turbo-Diesel.

The 2015 GMC Canyon is scheduled to arrive in dealerships this fall.

  • Eight-speed transmission to debut in select Chevrolet and GMC vehicles

The US car brands of Chevrolet and GMC, fully owned by General Motors, have confirmed that certain Chevy and GMC models will receive a new eight-speed automatic transmission starting in 2015. The new models that will boast this gearbox will be the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon Denali/Yukon XL Denali models that come with 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engines.

The new transmission is called Hydra-Matic 8L90 and has been developed by GM. It comes with about the same size and weight as the Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic gearbox. Its 7.0 overall gear ratio spread is wider than GM’s six-speed automatic transmissions, providing a numerically higher first gear ratio to help drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering. The 8L90 also enables numerically lower rear axle ratios, which reduce engine rpm on the highway.

The 6.2-liter EcoTec V8 engine is also impressive – it offers 309 kW (420 HP) of power and 460 lb.-ft. (624 Nm) of torque as well as a maximum available trailer rating of 12 000 pounds (5448 kilograms), based on the SAE J2807 Recommended Practices. Just like many other EcoTec3 engines, it can also work with four cylinders only under lighter loads to improve fuel efficiency.

More information on the 6.2-liter EcoTec V8 engine will become available when the unit enters production, which will be in Q4 2014.
