  • 2015 Dodge Viper Gets More Horsepower and $15k Price Drop

2015-Dodge-Viper-SRT-THUMBGood news for all 2015 Dodge Viper future buyers: the new starting price of the MY 2015 model is $15,000 USD less than the 2014 model it replaces. In addition, Dodge is giving the snake more horsepower and improved fuel economy. The new model year version of the Viper SRT will produce 645 horsepower (474 kW) and get up to 20 miles per gallon.

Dodge launched the original 1992 Dodge Viper priced at $50,700 USD, which adjusted for inflation equates to $86,130 in today’s dollars. This is even more compared to the price tag for the MY2015 Viper (see below). The first generation model 400 horsepower (294 kW), it didn’t have air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control or … even have real windows. This made it the rawest American performance car of its time.

On the contrary, the fifth generation Viper, which maintains the purity of the original car through its seductive design, perfect weight balance and all-aluminum V10, adds 245 horsepower and five-mode ESC, two-mode suspension, ABS, traction control, launch control and a lightweight carbon fiber, magnesium and aluminum structure.

Furthermore, Dodge is also introducing various product enhancements, new packages and new colors for the 2015 Viper. The SRT is getting new accent stitching on the seats and instrument panel as well as Alcantara accents on the doors and instrument panel, and ‘Viper’ badged aluminum sill plates.

In addition, the GT now comes enhanced with Nappa leather seats with Alcantara inserts, Alcantara accents on the doors and IP, ‘Viper’ badged aluminum sill plates, two-mode suspension, five-mode ESC, ‘GTS’ hood and two-piece StopTech slotted rotors. The GTS Ceramic Blue Special Edition has an exclusive Ceramic Blue exterior color scheme accented by Black stripes.

At last, the TA 2.0 Special Edition is improved via the high-performance Aero Package. 2015 Viper is also getting three new exterior paint colors: Y’Orange, Stryker Orange and Stryker Purple.

The production of 2015 Dodge Vipers will begin in the second half of the fourth quarter of 2014. The cars will be arriving in dealerships in the first quarter of 2015 with a starting price of $84,995 USD.

  • The Dodge Viper, Then and Now

In February 1998, Chrysler Chairman Bob Lutz asked Tom Gale, Chrysler Chief Design Engineer, to make a mockup of “a modern day Cobra performance car”. Gale with years of experience at Chrysler went to work. Later that year, the fleshed out design was presented to Lutz who immediate asked that it go forward as a working concept car. Metalcrafters in Fountain Valley, CA was chosen to product the sheet metal and chassis was Chrysler-based. The car was presented at the 1989 North American International Auto Show and public reaction was so enthusiastic that Chief Engineer Roy Sjoberg was directed to immediately develop it as a production vehicle.

Sjoberg selected 85 engineers to be on “Team Viper,” with development beginning in March 1989. The team asked the then-Chrysler subsidiary Lamborghini to cast a prototype aluminum block based on Dodge‘s V10 truck engine for sports car use in May. The production body was completed in the fall, with a chassis prototype running in December. Though a V8 engine was first used in the first test vehicle, the V10, which the production car was meant to use, was ready in February 1990. Official approval for the car came in May 1990 from Chrysler chairman Lee Iacocca. One year later, Carroll Shelby piloted a pre-production car as the pace vehicle in the Indianapolis 500 race. In November 1991, the car was released to reviewers with first retail shipments beginning in January 1992.

Since 1992, the Dodge Viper has had four long generations lasting until 2010. There were actually no 2010 models, only extended 2009 models, and 2011 saw zero production Vipers at all. In 2012, the Viper returned under the SRT brand and arrived with a redesigned body and a slightly larger engine. Enlarged to displace 8.4 liters, the V-10 powerplant delivered 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, a figure that remained unchanged until 2014.

Heading into 2015, the SRT and Dodge brands have again become one, allowing the Dodge Viper SRT to return. Aside from switching the SRT badge with a Dodge logo, exterior changes for the 2015 model year are mostly about vibrant new colors and new special-edition packages. A GT model that slots between the entry-level Viper and the Viper GTS is also available, but this new model stands out from the regular “snake” by means of chassis settings and interior features.

Modifications are a bit more obvious on the Viper TA 2.0, which is basically an evolution of last year’s track-prepped, Time Attack model. The updated track-capable model comes with a new aerodynamic package, which includes new front dive planes, carbon-fiber front corner splitters, and a revised, larger rear wing. The latter brings significant improvements in terms of downforce, increasing the 2014 model’s 278 pounds at 150 mph to 400 pounds at the same speed. Also brand-new is the Yorange exterior finish – described as “a vibrant mix of bright orange and yellow tones” – which joins the familiar Competition Blue and Venom Black.

Moving over to the GTS model, Dodge is now offering a Ceramic Blue Edition Package. The bundle adds an exclusive Ceramic Blue paint color with black stripes and set of five-spoke Rattler wheels finished in Black Vapor Chrome. The package is rounded off by a GTS sill badge, a Satin Black exhaust bezel, orange brake calipers, and carbon-fiber brake ducts and rear applique. Lastly, both the GT and the GTS models can be ordered in Stryker Purple, an all-new “liquid mercury” color for the 2015 model year. The exterior stripe color packages have been enhanced as well, and now include Adrenaline Red.

  • 2015 Dodge Viper To Get Extra Horsepower

The latest news around the Dodge Viper from the model year 2015 is that it is going to get more engine power. The car’s engine won’t be supercharged nor be the most powerful Dodge’s Hellcat V-8. On the contrary, it will keep its naturally-aspirated 8.4-liter V10 unit which will be boosted with the minor 5 horsepower. The increase of power will be done via tuning.

This means that the initial 640 hp (471 kW) of the Viper will become in the 2015 model year 645 hp (474 kW). Unfortunately, there will be no change in the torque figures in this Dodge, so it will be left with the original 813 Nm (600 lb-ft). Still, not bad at all.

Reports stated that the increase in power will probably be due to a combination of enhanced breathing and altered code. We also expect to see some changes in the transmission, which for the MY2014 was the six-speed manual gearbox.

The 2014 Version of the SRT Viper has a curb weight of just 1,521 kg (3,354 lbs) and Dodge seems to make little or no modifications here. With the original 640 hp, the Viper can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in the impressive 3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 331 km/h (206 mph). The ¼ mile is covered in 11.5 seconds, while the 0 to 160 km/h sprint is covered in less than 12 seconds. Wonder what these figures will look like with the minor 5 hp update.

  • Dodge Viper GTS Time Attack Carbon Special Edition

Dodge-Viper-GTS-Time-Attack-Carbon-Special-Edition-THUMBDodge Viper GTS Time Attack Carbon Special Edition has been shown today at the New York International Auto Show. Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) brand is enhancing the iconic Viper with an Anodized Carbon Special Edition Package as well as with the new Time Attack Group road-racing spec-package. Only 50 examples of this exclusive model will be produced. Of course, each vehicle will carry a numbered dash plaque that will identify its uniqueness.

Anodized Carbon Special Edition Package was introduced last year. It adds to the Viper GTS one-of-a-kind Metallic Matte exterior color. Now, the vehicle is getting even more outstanding via the combination of the special exterior color with the new Time Attack Group of performance parts.

These parts include a carbon fiber rear deck lid spoiler and two-piece front corner splitters. In addition, also included are two-mode Bilstein dampers which were tuned for maximum on-track performance. They feature unique orange springs.

Furthermore, Street and Race Mode suspension settings offer firmer damping. Other highlights in terms of handling are the Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, matte black lightweight forged-aluminum Sidewinder wheels and solid sway bars. Track-duty two-piece Brembo brake rotors contribute to an increased thermal capacity for additional resistance to brake fade.

In fact, the Anodized Carbon Special Edition Package features Metallic Matte Black and satin surface finishes. Satin Black Vapor marks the exhaust bezels, fuel-filler door, and carbon brake ducts and a rear appliqué below the liftgate.

The interior is wrapped in Alcantara. Contrast is making the orange stitching. Precisely, an Alcantara headliner, Alcantara-wrapped knee blockers and door bolsters provide interior surface texture contrast, while gunmetal bezels, orange vent accents, and carbon-fiber trim make the accents here. Nappa leather and Alcantara is used for the sport seats.

  • Dodge Viper GTS Heffner Performance Drag Racing [VIDEO]

Heffner-Dodge-Viper-GTS-shadowHeffner-Dodge-Viper-GTS-mediumDid you start the day today and think “I want to watch a video of a 650 hp Dodge Viper GTS taking on – with various success – some of the established names in a head-to-head drag race”? Weirdly specific, but luckily, here’s one. It’s a Viper GTS which has been touched up by the turbo maniacs, Heffner Performance. The final product shows off 650 hp and a hell of a voice.

Let us break down the video for you. We get to see some close up, off-the-line action of the GTS as it gives a Nissan R35 GT-R a run for its money. Then there’s another round, but this time the foe is an Aston Martin Vantage. We get no closure in either cases because the clip quickly cuts after the initial “go”. All pays off, however, as we get to see a full GTS vs Aventador LP700 showdown. Great start on part of the Viper, but eventually the Lambo becomes too much to handle and the former falls short of victory. Eventually, we get another R35 GT-R competitor (or the same one). Again a great start for the Viper and this time it manages to keep the pole position throughout the race, although it was evident that the Nissan was starting to catch up.

Regardless, drag races are all about acceleration delivered at the right time. Oh, and they are also about the noise, and the smell of rubber… and demolished clutch disks.

  • Dodge Introduces 2014 SRT Viper Time Attack Special Edition

2014-Dodge-SRT-Viper-Time-Attack-Special-Edition-THUMG2014 Dodge SRT Viper Time Attack Special Edition is specifically built for those keen on performance oriented machines. The model is based on the current 2014 SRT Viper model but includes a TA (Time Attack) Special Edition Package.

The latter enhances vehicle’s ultra-low center of gravity and 50/50 weight distribution via chassis parts developed specifically by Dodge‘s SRT team. Of course the aim is to get the most out of the race-car-like chassis.

As a matter of fact, the SRT engineers developed new spring rates, dampers, sway bars and brake components, which were later combined with vehicle’s Advanced Aerodynamics Package. The latter comprises of carbon fiber front splitters and rear spoiler to boost downforce at higher speeds. In addition, the brake system was also updated in order to deliver better balance and to resist thermal saturation during track work.

To go even further into details, the key high-performance equipment for the 2014 SRT Viper TA Special Edition includes unique race-tuned calibration for the two-mode Bilstein DampTronic suspension system, retuned springs, shocks and road-racing derived sway bars; lighter, carbon fiber structural X-brace that contributes towards 50-percent increase in torsional rigidity and stiffness across the Viper lineup; new Brembo two-piece, 32-millimeters wide, high-thermal capacity rotors and pads matched with the Advanced Aerodynamics Package.

This special edition Viper runs on standard Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires wrapped around the ultra-lightweight, multi-spoke Sidewinder II wheels. The brake calipers include a black anodized finish with the Viper logo shown in TA Orange.

A visible highlight on the rear is a carbon fiber applique that accentuates the rear width proportions and adds another level of detail. Under the hood this performance machine hides handcrafted, all-aluminum 8.4-liter, mid-front V-10 overhead-valve engine. The unit is capable of delivering 640 horsepower (470 kW) and 813 Nm (600 lb.-ft.) of torque.

The interior of the car is also performance-oriented and sports premium ballistic fabric racing seats from Sabelt and lightweight fiberglass shell. Both driver and passenger seats can also accommodate a 3- or 6-point harness for racing belts.

As a standard, the interior is finished in black. However, it has some contrasting accents such as orange stitching on the cloth seats, instrument panel, center stack, console, pull brake, shifter boot, shifter head, steering wheel and upper doors. The curb weight of the car is measured at 3,390 pounds.

2014 Dodge SRT Viper Time Attack Special Edition will begin to arrive at dealerships in the fourth quarter of 2013.
