  • Cadillac Burning Rubber on The Nürburgring

The Nordschleife, the Northern Loop or quite simply the Nürburgring is the name of the notorious racing track based in Germany. Why notorious? Well, tragically many people have lost their lives along its corners. There is some silver lining to the story however, as it has also helped shape the automotive industry by providing grounds for testing, fine-tuning and refinement.
And now a Cadillac team of engineers along with Dave Mikels (energy and powertrain integration engineer) have traveled all the way from from Michigan to the Nürburgring ring to develop their future ATS luxury compact sedan.

Being Nürburgring-certified performance test drivers, Mikels and his team will test out their 270 horsepower 2.0L turbo four-cylinder and 3.6L V-6 engines, along with the second- generation Cadillac Magnetic Ride Control suspension. Here is what they had to say about the ring:

“There are places where you’re airborne, and then there are valleys where you’re in full compression. There are off-camber, on-camber turns. There’s no other place in the world where you can test for all of that, except here.”

After gathering a sufficient amount of data, the ATS development team can send it back to their Michigan factory for processing all in the name of improving the Cadillac’s track run.
More information on the ATS will be available on the 2012 NAIAS when it will be its first public debut.

  • GMC 2.0 liter turbo petrol engine

General Motors Company has introduced their latest creation – a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, which will have its official debut in the 2013 Cadillac ATS next month at the Detroit Motor Show.

“This engine is the perfect match for the new ATS, which will be a refined performance luxury sedan,” commented Don Butler, Cadillac vice president of Global Marketing.

“The 2.0T has an exceptionally smooth and responsive power curve that will make the ATS nimble, quick and fun to drive.”, he added.

The features direct-injection technology, four-valve-per-cylinder with CVVT, twin-scroll turbocharger, forged-steel crankshaft, and a two-stage variable-displacement oil pump with jet-spray piston cooling. It boasts 273PS (201 kW) and 353Nm (260 lb-ft) of toque at just 1500RPM, which is an impressive 136PS per liter.

Overall engine friction is reduced by up to 16 percent. The low-friction design means engine power is delivered more efficiently.

Proprietary computational fluid dynamics analysis techniques were used to develop an all-new combustion system with a higher compression ratio, which also helped boost efficiency.

Additional details on the ATS will be announced at the 2012 NAIAS. The ATS will be built at the Lansing Grand River plant alongside the Cadillac CTS Sedan, Coupe and Sport Wagon and V-Series performance cars.

  • 2013 Cadillac XTS

Cadillac will exhibit the new 2013 XTS at the Los Angeles Auto Show, next week. Cadillac XTS is practically the same as the XTS Platinum Concept, which will be produced instead the DTS and STS models.

The exterior boasts superb elegance and hosts the Cadillac’s Art and Science design language, which include vertical headlamp and taillamps, with integrated light pipes and richly detailed lighting components.  There are also spoiler mounted on the deck lid, incorporating the center high-mounted stop lamp, a high beltline and 20” alloy wheels fitted with low-profile tires.

The interior includes Organic Light-Emitting Diode (O-LED) displays in place of traditional gauges and screens. XTS will also feature Cadillac’s high-end CUE infotainment system.

The engine will be a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 322PS (237 kW) and 372Nm (275 lb-ft). It is interesting that the big saloon will have FWD, but we hope that an all-wheel drive will be available as an option.

2013 Cadillac XTS will be presented on November 16.

  • Cadillac Ciel Concept

Huge open-top¸ four-doors, elegant lines and enormous front hood? That’s right – Cadillac, but this time – Ciel Concept, which was introduced at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Of course, the picture needs a twin-turbo 3.6 liter V6 to be completed. The power is more than satisfying for a blast in the hair – 431PS (317 kW) and 583Nm (430 lb-ft) of torque. The all wheel-drive is present. However, we don’t like that. The open-tops need to be rear-wheel-drive… PERIOD!

    The interior is awesome:

    * Sloping bolsters on the seats that allow passengers to slide into the seats more comfortably
    * A personal device storage area on the front of the console with inductive charging and Bluetooth connectivity
    * A power-assisted transmission shifter that deploys as soon as the engine is started
    * Lighting in the armrests that combines a natural light well for daytime driving and ambient lighting for nighttime drives
    * Door storage areas that are inspired by premium fashion accessories and open with high-quality zippers
    * Pull-out blankets are available for all three passengers and retract automatically
    * All the seats have heating and cooling features, along with a drawer containing sun lotion, sun glasses and towels, as well as aromatherapy that is controlled from the rear armrest.

Finally, the Ciel Concept comes with carbon ceramic brake rotors behind the 22” rims. We are in love with this car and hopefully it will go in production. It just has to be seen on the road with four ladies inside it. Sexy!

  • 2011 Cadillac ELR

2011 Cadillac ELR will actually go on sale. The car is based on the Converj Concept, which was introduced back in the beginning of 2009.

The production vehicle will have electric motor with extended range. The Voltec powertrain consisting of a T-shaped lithium-ion battery, an electric motor and a four-cylinder engine will deliver nice moments behind the steering wheel.

“The concept generated instant enthusiasm,” said Don Butler, vice president-Cadillac Marketing.

“Like other milestone Cadillac models of the past, the ELR will offer something not otherwise present – the combination of electric propulsion with striking design and the fun of luxury coupe driving.”, he added.

“There’s no mistaking it for anything but a Cadillac, an aggressive, forward-leaning profile and proportion showcases a uniquely shaped, modern vision of a personal luxury 2+2,”, said Ed Welburn, GM vice president, Global Design.

Cadillac will reveal another new concept car on Thursday, Aug. 18, at a special event prior to the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

  • America vs. Asia vs. Europe

Despite the hard financial circumstances some car manufacturers keep developing and releasing sports luxurious cars. The three cars in question here are: The 2009 Audi S6 coming from Europe, the 2011 Infinity M coming from Asia and the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V.

3 cars, 26 cylinders, more than 1300hp altogether and let the fun begin.

Being sports cars first of all, it is power on the first place. All three have lots of it, but the Cadillac has 121hp more than the Audi and 136 more than the Infinity. Being supercharged the Cadillac has the most torque as well – 551 NM.

Both the Audi and the Cadillac can be equipped with a six-speed automatic, while the Infinity offers a seven-speed transmission. If you are more conservative, the Cadillac is the only one to offer a manual gearbox – a 6-speed one.

Having such immense amount of power feels great and engineers were well aware of this. All three cars can benefit from at least 350mm rotors on the front wheels. The Audi has the largest brakes – 385mm and two-piston sliding calipers. The Cadillac’s are just 5mm smaller; the Infinity has 356mm rotors.

    America vs. Asia vs. Europe
    America vs. Asia vs. Europe

So it seems the Cadillac has it all in terms of driving experience. It lacks some other stuff though – No DVD player is to be found inside. Also, it is only sold as RWD, which is indeed fun, but AWD provides more stability and control especially if you have more than 400 hp.  Another small detail -it does not have a sunroof unlike the other two that have one as standard. At the cost of $62,360.00 the Cadillac is the second cheapest but mpg wise it is doing the worst of all three.

So which is the most fun to drive? The Cadillac is RWD, so maybe young people would prefer it, hence the supercharged Corvette engine and 556 hp. The Infinity is the only one offering 7 speeds meaning you always have enough power and torque to get your back firmly on the seat. The Audi has 2 cylinders more and offers the best picture under the bonnet, also its peak of torque is at the lowest RPM and the peak of power is at the highest. Also it costs 14-16k more than the other two.

Which is the fastest – definitely the Cadillac, considerably.

Which one is the most beautiful – the Infinity for sure slightly reminding of a Jaguar or a Maserati.

    What does the Audi lack?

    – A little more power to face the competition and let’s face it

    – Arguments to justify the 14k gap in price.
