  • Buick Envista

Buick has introduced the 2024 Envista, a new premium small SUV designed to provide the cargo space and utility of an SUV within the sleek and sporty proportions of a sedan. According to Duncan Aldred, global vice president of Buick-GMC, the Envista will disrupt the small SUV segment with its exceptional design, advanced technology, and affordability. The Envista will be priced at $23,495, making it one of the most affordable SUVs in its class. It will be available in three unique trims: Preferred, Sport Touring, and Avenir, expanding the popular Avenir sub-brand across Buick’s entire lineup.

    New design

Buick’s new design language, which was first featured on the Wildcat EV concept, has been fully incorporated into the Envista. This includes a low-profile silhouette and forward leaning nose with the Buick emblem mounted on the body. The sculptural beauty of the body side features powerful fender forms and a sculpted waistline, while bright trim adds to the vehicle’s expressiveness. The headlamps and taillamps have evolved to feature Buick’s signature wing lighting with a thinner and more crisp form. The Envista takes Buick’s sculptural beauty to the next level with its unique proportions, modern stance and sleek form. The ST trim comes standard with all-black 18-inch wheels, with 19-inch wheels available, while the Avenir comes standard with bespoke Pearl Nickel 19-inch wheels.

    Interior

The interior of the Envista is designed to feel spacious and bright, thanks to long windows and efficient use of cabin space. The vehicle offers more legroom than any previous Buick small SUV, with a long wheelbase and Ultrawide Infotainment Display to maximize functionality. The infotainment system is easy to use and has voice recognition and multimedia applications. The interior is carefully designed with attention to detail, including colorful stitching and logos on the seats, as well as a flat-bottom steering wheel. The QuietTuning system reduces road noise to provide a peaceful driving experience.

    Inspiring confidence, delivering comfort

The 2024 Envista will include the Buick Driver Confidence package as standard, which features six active safety and driver assistance technologies like Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and IntelliBeam auto high-beams. • Buick Encore GX

Buick revealed the 2024 Encore GX, elevating the small SUV segment. The Encore GX is the first vehicle in North America to adopt the brand’s new tri-shield logo, as well as the new face of Buick through its front-end styling. Sporting revitalized exterior design and a new tech-centric interior, the Encore GX is a modern, sophisticated and stylish take on the premium small SUV.

The updated Encore GX will also offer the Avenir trim for the first time, representing the highest expression of Buick luxury. In addition, the reimagined Sport Touring (ST) trim will now be an option for Encore GX buyers, offering a uniquely chic and sporty appearance.

    New look, same quality focus

Coming fresh off Buick’s top ranking in the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study, the 2024 Encore GX continues Buick’s standard for high-quality engineering and craftsmanship, with an all-new look.

First seen on the Buick Wildcat EV concept, the new front fascia design language features a dynamic, forward-leaning front-end that comes to a crescendo at the brand’s new body-mounted tri-shield logo. An updated modern grille pairs with new signature winged LED headlamps to create a distinctive visual presence. New 18-inch and 19-inch wheel options are also available.

“The new Encore GX delivers a sleek, sporty, sophisticated presence,” said Bob Boniface, director, Global Buick Design. “It’s inherently functional, yet the new exterior design creates a more stylish and modern persona that is unique in today’s small SUV segment.”

The Encore GX’s rear styling features the new Buick logo and typography prominently displayed in the center of the tailgate, while new LED taillamps come standard on ST and Avenir trims. The ST also comes standard with high gloss black front and rear bumpers and is offered with an optional Black Roof Package.

    Driver centric and tech-forward interior

Inside the Encore GX, form, function and intuitive tech await. The updated interior is centered around Buick’s Virtual Cockpit System (VCS), with Encore GX the first Buick to adopt this technology. VCS features 19 diagonal inches of high-definition screens under one sheet of glass, comprising an 11-inch diagonal infotainment system — the largest infotainment screen in its segment — and a configurable 8-inch diagonal driver cluster screen, both angled toward the driver for intuitive control.

The latest version of Buick’s infotainment provides a sleek new layout, customizable home screen and easily accessible vehicle categories. Wireless Apple CarPlay3 and Android Auto4 compatibility are standard, and wireless phone charging5 is also available.

“The Encore GX is the first Buick in North America to sport our revamped interior and new Virtual Cockpit System,” said Boniface. “It’s rare to get such an elevated, tech-forward interior in a vehicle at this starting price. We wanted to uplift every aspect of the Encore GX and put the entire small SUV segment on notice.”

Soft-touch materials and unique stitching patterns flow throughout the updated interior. Avenir and ST logos are stitched into the head restraints on their respective trims, while the ST features a sporty flat-bottom steering wheel, matching its athletic persona.

The premium cabin experience is enhanced with Buick’s QuietTuning system, which helps prevent unwanted road noise from entering the cabin for a serene and premium driving experience.

    The Avenir’s encore

Buick’s Avenir trim is coming off its most successful year yet, commanding approximately a 27 percent and 28 percent adoption rate on the Enclave and Envision, respectively, as customers continue to be drawn to the functional luxury Buick delivers.

Available for the first time on the Encore GX, the Avenir trim elevates the small SUV segment to a new level, offering customers exclusive design cues, cutting-edge features and premium materials that have all become synonymous with the Avenir badge.

On the exterior, the Encore GX Avenir includes a unique Avenir grille, unique clear lens LED tail lamps, 19-inch Avenir-specific wheels, chrome front and rear bumpers accents and black carbon metallic body side molding.

The Avenir experience continues on the inside, as the new Encore GX Avenir brings an exclusive Whisper Beige and Jet Black color theme, leather seats, 10-way power driver seat, 8-way power passenger seat, heated steering wheel, air ionizer, rearview auto dim mirror, embroidered Avenir head restraints and Avenir door sills.

    Spirited efficiency

The 2024 Encore GX comes standard with a 1.2L turbocharged engine that produces 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. A 1.3L turbocharged engine is also available that produces 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. Each engine’s turbocharger allows it to reach torque peak much faster and maintain that torque peak for a longer RPM band compared to a naturally-aspirated engine, providing greater responsiveness and a more engaging drive for customers.

“The Encore GX is spirited and fun-to-drive, while providing the driver with a hushed and innately comfortable driving experience on a range of different road conditions,” said Seth Valentine, program engineering manager, Buick.

AWD is available across all trims, and those models are equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission. FWD models come standard with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

A fun and engaging drive experience is complemented by impressive fuel economy.  FWD models will offer a GM-estimated 30 mpg6 (combined), while AWD models will offer a GM-estimated 27 mpg6 (combined).

    Safety, confidence and comfort

The 2024 Encore GX comes standard with the Buick Driver Confidence package7. This package includes six active safety and driver assistance technologies such as Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, IntelliBeam auto high-beams and more.

Additional available safety and tech packages8 include features such as Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control and Rear Camera Mirror.

  • Salvaggio Design Buick Grand National

Kevin Hart the car guy (and international superstar) visited the SEMA Show in Las Vegas to see his brand new project for the first time; an ’87 Buick Grand National T-Top. It featured in the Magnaflow booth and was stationed across the aisle from Hart’s 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner, which starred in the Meguiar’s booth. Both cars were built by Salvaggio Design and designed by Sean Smith, ensuring the highest quality and a ridiculous attention to detail.

Wisconsin-based Dave Salvaggio has worked on numerous projects with Kevin, so they sat down with Smith to devise his beautiful Buick. And straight away, the direction was set by its name; Dark Knight.

All Hart’s cars have a name. The Roadrunner was Mike Myers, for example. It inspired Smith to devise a black and orange Halloween paint scheme with a blood-splatter effect on the leather seats, a knife handle shifter, and hockey mask-wearing Roadrunner badges.

Avoiding any Batmobile styling cues for the Grand National, the theme for Dark Knight is subtle. It’s recognizable by its sinister appearance, featuring a black exterior with a blue and grey interior that echoes the superhero’s suit and cape. Bronze details were inspired by the famous utility belt.

Aside from its theme, Hart wanted to create a Grand National resto-mod that would redefine its key elements with modern technology. However, he insisted Salvaggio and Smith retain the car’s character, including its stock fenders, to create a wolf in sheep’s clothing; something nobody would suspect.

Already the proud owner of a Grand National GNX with its factory flares, Hart didn’t want the new car to overwhelm it. He also stipulated it must have the famous T-Top roof, which triggered the search for a very specific car.

    GRAND NATIONAL

Once a suitable donor was found, Smith worked with the Salvaggio Design team to execute the vision with restraint. It wouldn’t be extroverted or widebody; instead they focused on details such as restyling the front bumper. Using 3D CAD technology, the front bumper was scanned and a new design was 3D-printed, incorporating functional air ducts to improve the cooling and aerodynamic properties; something they deemed necessary given the chosen powerplant. The printed bumper was then used to mold the final piece in carbon fiber.

Carbon fiber from Brothers Composites was used sparingly, limited to the hood, chin spoiler, rear spoiler and mirrors. It can also be found inside the car and under the hood, as we’ll explore later.

The next task was to “tighten” the body lines, giving them a crisper profile with a premium fit and finish. This involved reprofiling the shut lines on the doors to allow everything to flow better with the primary surfaces.

The metalwork was fabricated by Randy Russell, Telly Violetto and Craig Ness who expertly created the engine bay, floors, rear seat delete and trunk interior.

Smith designed new door handles that subtly update the original parts. Machined from billet, they have carbon fiber inlays to echo the carbon mirrors, which were molded from the stock parts.

With all the custom parts, the Buick’s lighting and front grille are stock, but Smith couldn’t resist reimagining the Grand National badge, creating a modern interpretation.

With the bodywork complete, the car was painted in straight BASF black – no tints or effects. It’s offset by the nickel-plate finish on the 19” HRE 501 wheels, which were chosen for their resemblance to the original equipment but with a modern twist.

    CHASSIS

Sitting on a laser-cut and TIG-welded custom Salvaggio chassis frame, the team added a Detroit Speed & Engineering X-Gen 595 front suspension package. The bolt-in subframe increased rigidity for superior handling from the Ultimate Performance coilovers. The rear-end has a DSE four-link set up with Panhard bar.

With its powerful engine, Salvaggio returned to Brembo for the ultimate stopping power. Brembo GT six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers provided supercar braking. They also ensured massive mechanical grip thanks to the 265/30 R19  front and chunky 325/30 R19 rear Toyo Proxes R888R tires mounted on the 19×9” front and 19×11” rear HRE 501 wheels.

    650HP

When it came to the heart of Dark Knight, the team sat down with Mario Abascal from Gearhead Fabrications to discuss the options. Inevitably, the Chevrolet LS V8 was a topic of heated conversation but Mario suggested the LF4 3.6L V6 Twin-turbo engine from the Cadillac ATS-V. “It was the obvious choice for what Buick might have installed if the Grand National GNX were around today!” he told us.

Having made the suggestion, it was Mario’s mission to see it through; no easy task given the complexity of the direct injection engine and eight-speed automatic transmission.

Undeterred, Gearhead sourced a running ATS-V drivetrain assembly. Strapped to a pallet, it included the V6 engine, trans, full wiring harness, control modules, dashboard and steering system. The team then invested 45 hours to isolate each individual wire and module to learn what could be disposed without affecting the functionality. As it turns out, they were able to discard about 60% of its bulk, filling numerous trash bags.

Installing the drivetrain required not only new mounts but the oil coolers, oil filters, turbo coolant system and more had to be relocated to clear the Salvaggio frame rails. The team also had to painstakingly extend 300 wiring connections to relocate the power control module (PCM) under the newly created carbon fiber engine covers.

As a homage to the factory GNX, Mario removed the twin-turbo setup, building a single-turbo kit around a 67mm Boost Labs BL67R ball-bearing turbo with billet wheel. It was mounted to a custom header once Salvaggio Design fabricated flanges to fit to the Cadillac’s integral manifold.

Abascal built a custom exhaust from Magnaflow sections for the unique engine swap. He also fabricated the plumbing, including pipes for the factory air-to-water intercooler, which mounted in its stock position on top of the engine.

The Cadillac engine’s fuel supply is governed by a lobe on the factory cam. And by fitting a Comp Cams “fuel cam,”  Abascal increased the fuel flow to feed the turbo. He then controlled engine boost, fuel, ignition and even the transmission shift points via an HP Tuners module.

Running at about 20psi boost pressure, the single-turbo Cadillac V6 was dyno-tested at 650hp on 103-octance fuel. The intention is to fit performance camshafts and reach a projected 700hp on race gas. This is a considerable increase over both the Grand National GNX at 276hp and even the ATS-V at 464hp.

“We’re so happy that everything functions as it should,” Mario told us. “The transmission shifts perfectly and even the proximity sensor in the car can detect the key fob, only allowing the engine to start if the key is nearby. It has full factory functionality and could even operate remote locking if required. We’re delighted with the engine choice,” he concluded.

To accommodate the new drivetrain and tidy the engine bay, the Salvaggio team fabricated a core support and radiator cover before creating a new firewall and installing carbon fiber inner fender wells. Carbon fiber engine covers completed the transformation once the plumbing was finished in Cerakote bronze to match the accents throughout the car.

    LEATHER

The Dark Knight theme takes center stage inside thanks to the extraordinary work of Salvaggio Design, Sean Smith, and the talented family at Gabe’s Custom Interiors.

Picking up on the Caped Crusader’s costume, the seats and door panels were wrapped in a combination of dark blue and grey leather. The utility belt bronze tones are introduced through contrast stitching and pinstripe details. There are also bronze accents on the cooling vents and custom billet steering wheel. The one-off wheel was heavily influenced by the original part but has been beautifully updated.

The same can be said of the door trims, which were originally plastic but have been replaced by bronze billet pieces with carbon fiber inlays. A billet shift knob and shift boot bezel were also machined from solid, while the instrument panel was 3D printed and fitted with Holley gauges. Like everything else, it feels comfortably familiar with a modern twist.

  • Buick Unleashes Wildcat EV Concept

    2022 Buick Wildcat EV Concept

Buick today unveiled the Wildcat EV concept — an expressive vision of the brand’s new design direction as it transitions to an all-electric future.

The Wildcat was developed to convey the all-new design language that will influence Buick production models for the foreseeable future. Buick’s new tri-shield logo, mounted prominently on the body front and rear, symbolizes the design transformation and new production models will wear it starting next year.

“The Wildcat EV concept represents the real design future for the brand,” said Sharon Gauci, executive director, Global Buick and GMC Design. “Buick has always been forward looking and this expression is a glimpse of where we’re going, and the optimism we have for the limitless possibilities of an electric future.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjrZvFab8u4

The Wildcat EV concept also introduces a new, expressive face for Buick, distinguished by a bold, forward-leaning front-end appearance that features a low-mounted, trapezoidal grille. Sharp, high-mounted and horizontal check mark-shaped lighting flanks the vehicle, while the outer edges of the grille house primary lighting. The lighting elements are configured to create a unique welcome choreography when the driver approaches.

Further, the vehicle — a 2+2 coupe — strikes a powerful, expressive presence, with an all-new, laid-back proportion complemented by a low, wide stance. The windshield wraps around and flows into the side glass, which tapers dramatically with the fast roofline to accentuate the aggressive profile.

“From every angle, the vehicle looks like it’s ready to pounce,” said Bob Boniface, director, Global Buick Design. “It’s the result of careful attention to the proportions and sculptural beauty derived from the intersection of forms, not lines.”

    Additional exterior design highlights include:

    • Distinctive semi-swing doors for easy entry and exit.
    • Unique aluminum trim that appears to flow seamlessly into the interior seat structures.
    • Micro-LED lighting technology and thin-beam projector lenses for the front lighting.
    • Blade-style taillights embedded in the roof’s sail panels, culminating in check mark-style horizontal lamps that echo the front lighting signature.
    • An external “state of charge” indicator visible in the exterior hatchback glass.
    • Jet Age-inspired 18-spoke “turbine” wheels.

“The more you look at the Wildcat EV concept, the more the details reveal themselves,” said Boniface. “Its timeless proportions acknowledge the brand’s rich design legacy, while our latest technology moves you forward.”

A blend of modernity and warmth

Inside, the Wildcat EV concept’s cabin has an inner glow that is inviting and comforting, all while integrating new technologies designed to make the riding experience more enjoyable.

“It’s a space intended to strike an emotional chord,” said Therese Pinazzo, Buick exterior and interior design manager. “It is defined by simple, graceful forms that convey balance, harmony and a feeling of warmth.”

The 2+2 configuration, delineated by a prominent console that extends from the base of the instrument panel to the rear seating area, uses unique graphic and color contrasts to create the perception of visually floating elements intended to accentuate the cabin’s lightweight feel and spaciousness.

Color plays an important role in the warmth and comfort the interior conveys. Legato Green flows through the cabin and is accented with brushed or polished aluminum trim. Lively orange elements, including the seat belts, also add visual distinction.

Additional interior design elements include cockpit-style seats with cantilevered headrests that appear to be floating, and a lightweight, flat-bottom steering wheel.

When it comes to technology integration and infotainment interaction, a sweeping touchscreen is the access point on the instrument panel, along with a complementing screen on the console.

The Wildcat EV concept is built to be a platform for futuristic features such as artificial intelligence, biometrics and aromatherapy. The vehicle is designed to detect an elevation in driver heart rate and automatically adjust vehicle settings to calm them down. For example, when Zen Mode is activated, it will dim the cabin lights, disperse calming aromatherapy scents and activate massaging seats.

Everything about the concept is intended to convey what’s possible — in design, technology and the transformative experience of EV mobility.

“We are on the cusp of true change, and this concept is a tangible vision of it,” said Gauci. “It inaugurates the next chapter in Buick’s design heritage, as we make the crucial transition to our all-electric future.”

2016 Buick Avista Concept Ahead of its global debut at the North American International Auto Show, Buick introduced the Avista Concept. This is a 2+2 coupe with the idea to push brand’s boundaries of design ideas, along with some performance tweaks.

The sleek and sweeping proportions serve as a foundation of the monstrous 400hp (294kW) twin-turbocharged V6 power unit and of the driver-oriented cabin that offers both functionality and comfort.

As you can see, Avista’s elegant lines stretch from the front to rear, reminding of its sibling Avenir Concept and the 2017 LaCrosse model. What is also noticeable is the absence of B-pillars between the doors and rear side windows which somehow make further accent on the flowing profile.

Also, we notice that Buick design team went for a different approach with lights design. Now we see the idea of “illuminated halos” around lamp’s edges, which suggests a three-dimensional shape and sculpture. Also, the front meets anyone with its restyled grille and the new winged tri-shield insignia set.

Dimensions of the model measure 4,667 mm in length, 1,839 mm in width and 1,696 mm in height. It rides on a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. These numbers only mean a roomy interior, which is also comfortable and safe.

And have I mentioned the lightweight aluminum hood?

The design accents, which are also functional, include LED daytime running lamps and rear LED accent lights, standard 19-inch alloy wheels, and optional panoramic moonroof. The interior benefits from some very cool features too, including standard eight-way power-adjustable front seats and four-way-adjustable lumbar.

For the hot summer days, Buick is offering a ‘cooling’ function for the front ones. Also standard inside are the tri-zone climate control with rear-seat controls and console-mounted rear vents, as well as the Bose premium sound system.

Safety and technology equipment are also important part of any car.
