  • BMW Skytop

BMW is poised to set pulses racing among fans of exclusive driving pleasure and collectors of automotive masterpieces once again with a strictly limited-run small-series model. Following in the tyre tracks of the BMW 3.0 CSL – revealed in 2022 to mark the 50th birthday of BMW M GmbH – is the BMW Skytop (fuel consumption, combined: 11.6 litres/100 km [24.4 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions, combined: 264 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G; provisional values).
The BMW Skytop wraps the joy of driving for which the brand is renowned in a timelessly elegant design characterised by precision craftsmanship in every last detail. Initially shown in design study form as the BMW Concept Skytop at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2024 on the shores of Lake Como, the two-seater roadster sent waves of excitement through the assembled connoisseurs and automotive aficionados. This rapturous response prompted BMW to convert the concept into a strictly limited production run of 50 examples.

The decision was announced by Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design, at an event hosted by the House of BMW in Milan, Italy, where the highly desired design study was again on display. It was also revealed here that all examples of the BMW Skytop reserved for enthusiasts and collectors found their future owners within a very short space of time. “The BMW Skytop is a truly exotic design and offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level,” said van Hooydonk. “To finally be able to announce that this car will be built is like a dream come true. Thank you for the very positive response around the globe and to the passionate team that worked on the project.”

Dynamism and elegance continue the tradition of legendary BMW roadsters.
BMW recently presented the likewise strictly limited-run BMW 3.0 CSL. Production of this exclusive sports car was also capped at 50 cars. In both concept and design, the special edition served as a homage to the legendary BMW 3.0 CSL “Batmobile” of the early 1970s.

The BMW Skytop is another desirable collector’s item from the Bavarian premium carmaker. The open-top two-seater celebrates BMW’s history of iconic roadsters, among them the BMW 507 and BMW Z8. The sculptural athleticism of its body is constructed from taut, muscular surfaces defined by a few precise lines, the BMW Skytop emitting a powerful sense of dynamism before it even turns a wheel. The pronounced arrow shape of the bonnet, evocative BMW shark-nose design and tightening tail are all carefully chosen references to the BMW Z8.

Just like its legendary roadster ancestor, the BMW Skytop takes to the road with the most powerful V8 in the brand’s armoury. The 4.4-litre petrol unit generates maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp and teams up with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. Maximising traction is the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which distributes the engine’s power between all four wheels as required, and optimises stability and driving dynamics in any situation. With this drive configuration in place, the handsome two-door will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in around 3.3 seconds.

    Exclusive materials and traditional craftsmanship.
The exclusivity of this unique masterpiece of automotive craftsmanship is also reflected in its timelessly elegant appearance. Headlining the exterior design is the pronounced spline that extends from the bonnet to an aluminium bar on the boot lid, emphasising the dynamic flow of the special edition’s form. Winglets discreetly integrated into the door shoulders take the place of conventional door handles and – together with the light-alloy wheels with their intricate fins between the spokes – feed into the car’s clean, graceful appearance. The illuminated BMW kidney grille and the headlights also play their part in the progressive look of the front end. The LED units are positioned on aluminium carriers and have the slimmest profile currently available for automotive headlights. They were custom developed for the BMW Skytop and group together all the lighting functions. The rear lights likewise have an arrestingly slim design and carry the progressive design theme of the BMW Skytop into the rear end.

Like the leather-covered rollover bar behind the seats, the fully retractable rear window and leather-trimmed soft-top roof generate a pure-bred roadster feeling. The two removable roof sections, which are finished with high-quality synthetic leather, stow away in a special compartment in the luggage area.

The harmonious colour scheme ensures a smooth visual transition from interior to exterior – both with the soft-top open and closed. At the rear of the car, the reddish-brown of the roof flows into the Floating Sundown Silver exterior paint finish, whose chrome shadow effect gives it impressive visual impact. The elaborate colour gradient was applied by hand by experienced master painters.

Inimitable ambience, exquisite appointments and high-quality equipment.
Inside the BMW Skytop, too, precision craftsmanship, handpicked materials and warm, monochrome colour tones create a feel of cosseting luxury and singular elegance. In common with other elements of the interior design, the leather seats, accented by brogue-style decoration, come in the same shade of brown used for the roof. Crystal applications embedded ornately into the cockpit also contribute to the sumptuous on-board ambience.

The exclusive character of the BMW Skytop is additionally underscored by high-quality equipment features such as a soft-close function for the doors and the stunning Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display, which projects driving and navigation information directly into the driver’s field of view.

  • BMW i7 M70 xDrive

BMW M is launching a powerful all-electric performance model to lead the new BMW 7 Series range. It’s called the BMW i7 M70 xDrive and it’s the most powerful all-electric model in the BMW Group lineup, with a maximum output of 485 kW/660 hp. It has an electric motor on both the front and rear axles, which produces a driving experience that is unique in the luxury car segment. It can go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

This new model is the third performance model with an all-electric drive system from BMW M, following the BMW i4 M50 and BMW iX M60. It marks another milestone for BMW M GmbH in its electric mobility transformation. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive will debut at the Auto Shanghai international motor show in China and will be built at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, which is the lead plant for luxury models and also the competence centre for electric drive system production. The global launch will start in the second half of 2023.

The luxury segment now features an all-electric BMW M Performance model.

BMW is continuously developing the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology in the BMW i7 to improve power output and efficiency. This includes the powertrain, power electronics, high-voltage battery, and charging technology.

The BMW i7 M70 xDrive has integrated drive units on the front and rear axles that combine the electric motor, power electronics, and transmission in a compact housing. These units use an electrically excited synchronous motor, eliminating the need for rare earth metals in the rotor.

The most powerful BMW electric motor.

The BMW i7 M70 xDrive has an M-specific drive system that enables the rear-axle motor to achieve unprecedented power density. The drive unit has a six-phase design with a dual inverter that increases the peak output and provides power delivery characteristic of M models.

The motor’s power density of 2.41 kW/kg represents a 25.5% increase over the unit that drives the rear axle of the BMW i7 xDrive60, making it the company’s most powerful electric motor. This figure is due to a BMW Group-patented innovation that uses six excitation windings in the motor’s stator instead of the usual three.

This innovation allows the electric motor to generate a high output while maintaining its compact design and efficiency, making it far superior to a drive configuration using two motors at the rear axle. The resulting “double excitation” allows for continuous power output into the higher speed range.

The M Sport Boost function and M Launch Control are used to generate the highest possible power.

The BMW i7 M70 xDrive has a motor powering the rear axle that generates 360 kW/489 hp of peak output. The motor at the front axle generates 190 kW/258 hp. These two motors work together to create an electric all-wheel-drive set-up that generates a system torque of 1,015 Nm (748 lb-ft) in Sport mode and 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft) when the M Launch Control or M Sport Boost function is activated. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive is the fastest electric BMW model, reaching 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds, and has a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

The M Launch Control function integrates drive and traction control into the engine control unit, ensuring that the electric motors generate power precisely, allowing the drive system’s performance to be converted into acceleration instantly without any loss of traction. The M Sport Boost function is activated using the shift paddle on the left of the steering wheel and is displayed by Performance-specific graphics in the instrument cluster.

Additionally, the standard BMW IconicSounds Electric by Hans Zimmer provides a suitable acoustic accompaniment with a M Performance-specific note, whose character varies depending on the selected vehicle setting. In Sport mode, the sound is more powerful, giving a more intense experience of the drive system’s performance characteristics.

Extremely dynamic performance, excellent long-distance capabilities.

The BMW i7 M70 xDrive boasts impressive performance and is also designed for long-distance driving. The drive units are highly efficient and power consumption is reduced through measures such as adaptive recuperation of braking energy and heat pump technology. In the WLTP test cycle, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive consumes 20.8 to 23.8 kWh of electricity per 100 km.

The battery has a high energy density of 101.7 kWh and is located under the vehicle. This gives the BMW i7 M70 xDrive a range of 488-560 km (303-348 miles, WLTP cycle), making it suitable for everyday use. The Combined Charging Unit has advanced charging software for faster and more efficient charging. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive can be charged at up to 22 kW with AC charging and up to 195 kW with DC charging, extending the range by up to 170 km (106 miles, WLTP) in just ten minutes at a high-power charging station.

MAX RANGE operating mode: extra range at the push of a button.

To increase the car’s range while driving, a MAX RANGE mode has been introduced in the new BMW 7 Series. In this mode, the top speed and drive power are limited, and comfort functions are reduced, resulting in a range increase of 15 to 25 per cent. The MAX RANGE mode was created for situations where drivers can’t recharge the battery as originally planned. The top speed is restricted to 90 km/h (56 mph), and climate control and seat heating are disabled. A popup window appears on the control display, showing the increased range. MAX RANGE mode can be activated using the touchscreen, controller, voice commands, or can be deactivated by hard acceleration or switching windscreen ventilation to maximum.

  • BMW X6 M Competition

Dynamic flair, a powerful presence, and modern luxury define the character of the new 2024 BMW X5 M Sports Activity Vehicle and 2024 X6 M Sports Activity Coupe. The BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M will now be offered exclusively as Competition models – with a new V8 engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology delivering a maximum output of 617 hp, exterior design updates, and the latest-generation iDrive control/operation system, complete with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Operating System 8.

The new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition will make their public debut at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in March, and production will begin at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in April. The competence center for BMW X models also hosts production of the BMW X3 M, the BMW X4 M and the BMW XM – the first high-performance vehicle from BMW M GmbH with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

The first high-performance models from BMW M GmbH to feature 48V technology.

With the latest generation of drivetrain technology for the new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition, BMW M GmbH is forging ahead with electrification. In these new vehicles, 48V mild-hybrid technology makes its debut with BMW M, enhancing a new V8 engine featuring M TwinPower Turbo technology. Together, the boost provided by the electric motor and the high-revving character of the V8 engine take the performance for which M cars are renowned to an even more compelling level.

The electric motor, complete with power electronics, is integrated into the compact housing of the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and delivers an additional up to 12 hp of output and 147 lb-ft of torque. The result is a noticeably more rapid power delivery, enabling the powertrain to respond to every movement of the accelerator. The surge of power continues steadily into the upper reaches of the rev range. For the driver, this means extremely spirited and assured performance, both when accelerating off the line and during mid-range acceleration. With the electric motor supporting the combustion engine under steady loads, in many situations the engine can work within an optimum load window, thus increasing its efficiency.

The energy required for the additional electrical power is stored in a 48V battery in the engine compartment. The battery is charged through adaptive recuperation under braking and on the overrun, and also supplies the electrical system with the recuperated energy. The electric motor also works as a crankshaft-mounted starter generator. This ensures the combustion engine sparks to life smoothly, something the driver will notice in the operation of Auto Start Stop function; the 48V generator shuts off the engine with minimal vibration and starts it up again unobtrusively.

New V8 engine with optimized power delivery and increased efficiency.

The new S68 4.4-liter V8 engine in the 2024 BMW X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition is notable for its sharper response and increased efficiency compared to its predecessor. As well as a cross-bank exhaust manifold, the engine now also features a reinforced crankshaft drive, further developed turbocharging – mounted close to the exhaust manifold and with an electrically controlled blow-off valve – plus a new air intake duct, a new vane-type oil pump and a weight-optimized plastic oil sump.

A willingness to rev and seamless power delivery define the new V8 engine. It produces its peak torque of 553 lb-ft between 1,800 and 5,800 rpm and generates a maximum output of 617 hp at 6,000 rpm. The new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition each accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. The top speed of both models is electronically limited to 155 mph, or 177 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package.

The new V8 engine produces suitably dramatic sounds from the standard M Sport exhaust system, which features dual-branch pipes with large cross sections, high-capacity silencers, electrically controlled flaps and two pairs of tailpipes with Black Chrome finishers positioned either side of the rear apron in customary M fashion. New catalytic converters also reduce the engine’s emissions.

New 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with integrated electric motor.

In addition to the electric motor that has been incorporated for the 48V mild-hybrid system, the updated 8-Speed M Steptronic gearbox benefits from new gear ratios and a sharper shift action. The shorter ratios in the first three gears are ideal for accelerating hard off the line, while the transmission’s wider ratio spread increases the drive system’s overall efficiency. Shift sharpness benefits greatly from the transmission’s refined hydraulic control featuring a direct-acting pressure regulator valve.

The torque converter has been tuned to match the performance characteristics of the new V8 engine. A new cast-aluminum oil sump with cooling fins and increased capacity optimizes transmission temperature control as well as helping to keep it supplied with lubricant under high lateral acceleration.

The new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition are each fitted with a hydraulically damped transmission mount which, like the two engine mounts, has a very high spring rate. This results in a noticeably more rigid connection between the entire drivetrain and the body structure, enabling power from the entire drivetrain to be deployed as directly as possible while enhancing handling by minimizing flex.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation: greater speed and precision.

The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the Active M Differential at the rear axle are responsible for applying the power of the new TwinPower Turbo V8 to the road. Instead of just being interconnected with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system as before, they now work in tandem with near-actuator wheel slip limitation, ensuring swift, precise reactions to changes in the driving situation.

Integrated into the engine management, this traction control system makes corrective inputs up to ten times faster than conventional DSC systems, and with exceptional precision. Because of the speed with which the near-actuator wheel slip limitation responds to any loss of traction, especially when accelerating hard or taking corners at speed, the DSC system has to intervene far less frequently with selective applications of the brakes at individual wheels to maintain composed and assured handling.

Chassis. Precise wheel location, high body rigidity, refined suspension damping.

The chassis design benefits from careful refinements to the suspension to refine the linear build-up of lateral forces during the sort of performance driving for which BMW M models are intended. The double-wishbone front axle boasts excellent levels of longitudinal and lateral rigidity, while a large shear panel and model-specific underfloor struts help to deliver precise handling and sharp turn-in characteristics.

The five-link rear axle on the new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition also includes components designed for extremely high levels of torsional stiffness. The toe-in values at the rear axle have been modified for greater poise at very high speeds. Body rigidity at the rear of the vehicle has been further improved by measures such as the addition of thrust arms and a tunnel bridge that is joined together above the exhaust pipes.

Reworked dampers are adjusted automatically based on sensor data regarding body movement, road surface conditions, and steering inputs. This data allows the damping forces for each individual wheel to be smoothly adapted to the changing driving situation in just a few milliseconds using electromagnetic valves. The basic damper setting can be changed to suit preferences in the M Setup menu. Comfort mode delivers impressive levels of long-distance comfort, while the Sport setting activates a firmer setup for the body resulting in increased grip and enhanced lateral performance. The damper settings in Sport Plus mode are designed for highly dynamic driving situations.

M Servotronic steering with new steering gear.

A key part of the confidence-inspiring handling of the new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition is their M Servotronic steering and its excellent directional accuracy and clear feedback. It combines speed-sensitive power assistance and a variable steering ratio, enabling it to deliver exactly the right amount of steering response for the situation. The M Setup menu offers a choice of two settings for either very sporty or more comfort-oriented steering response.

    Latest-generation integrated braking system.

The M Compound brakes fitted as standard on the new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition comprise six-piston, fixed-caliper brakes with perforated discs measuring 15.6 inches in diameter at the front and single-piston, floating caliper units with 15.0-inch discs at the rear. Besides the standard blue finish, the calipers can also be specified in red or black.

The latest-generation integrated braking system featured in the new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition generates enormous stopping power with consistent pedal feel. This system packages the brake activation, brake booster, and braking control functions within a single compact module. The required brake pressure is triggered using an electric actuator, meaning braking requests from the driver assistance systems are also translated into extremely short stopping distances for increased active safety. The M-specific integrated braking system presents the driver with two pedal feel settings, allowing a choice between more comfort-oriented or very direct execution of brake pedal inputs in the M Setup menu.

Design. Slim headlights, new BMW kidney grille, and wide-open air intakes.

The BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition present new front-end designs based around crisp, expansive surfaces, resulting in a look of modernity and muscularity in the current BMW design language. In the middle of the front end, the BMW kidney grille and central lower air intake form a single black area. This X-shaped element produces a dynamic, forward-oriented impression.

A model-specific spoiler lip – also in black – forms the lower edge of the front apron on the new BMW X6 M Competition. It helps to optimize the aerodynamic balance of the Sports Activity Coupe and gives the X6 M Competition the appearance of sitting lower to the ground.

The new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition each receive an updated design of the signature BMW headlights and twin-kidney grille. The outline of the new M Shadowline headlight units is about an inch and a half narrower than on the outgoing models. Their arrow-shaped elements point outwards and serve as daytime running lights and turn signal indicators.

The BMW kidney grille is now all black in color and carries the relevant model badging in an enlarged letter/number combination. Its matte black surround creates a subtle contrast against the dark surfaces around it. The lower air intake and both side air intakes are also very open, enabling optimum inflow of cooling air for the high-performance engine and braking system of the new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition.

New BMW X5 M Competition: rear lights with bold X graphic.

Viewing the new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition in profile highlights the distinctive proportions of each model and their clear, modern design language. Like the surrounds for the BMW kidney grille and air breathers, the exterior mirror caps and the model badges at the rear are also finished in black as standard.

The L-shape familiar in the taillight designs from other BMW models is reflected horizontally in the new rear lights on the BMW X5 M Competition, creating an X motif. The vertical reflectors are now integrated lower down in the rear apron, bringing the vehicle’s visual center of gravity closer to the road.

On both models, a prominent diffuser insert extends downwards at the lower edge of the rear apron. It also provides a sophisticated border for the familiar pairs of twin exhaust tailpipes. The four tailpipe trims are in Black Chrome and each measure 4 inches in diameter.

New exterior paint finishes added to the range.

The selection of paint colors for the new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition now includes Brooklyn Grey metallic, Isle of Man Green metallic, and Frozen Pure Grey metallic.

At launch, customers will be able to choose from around 50 BMW Individual paint shades for both models. These include metallic and non-metallic finishes, as well as Frozen finishes. These exclusive paint options are applied in a meticulous process and the spectrum of colors is being expanded all the time.

Modern. Digital. M cockpit with BMW Curved Display.

Digital innovations enrich the performance experience in the new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition, and create a fresh, open, and contemporary interior design. At the heart of the design updates for the interior is the BMW Curved Display, which gives the M-typical cockpit a modern and expansive feel. The single glass surface incorporating the information display and control display and curved towards the driver takes a new approach to enhancing concentration on the dynamic driving experience. The high-resolution digital screen rests on the now slimmer instrument panel, which is trimmed in leather as standard. Also newly designed are the central air vents, which are now extremely narrow and integrated into the instrument panel almost out of sight.

The broad, smoothly curving trim element below the BMW Curved Display emphasizes the width of the instrument panel and therefore the generous space of the interior. Carbon Fiber interior trim is standard. Fineline Black wood trim and the new BMW Individual Silver Ash Root Open Pore wood trim with Color Gradient are optional.

Ambient light bar with configurable backlighting and alert function.

Also new is the ambient light bar with crystalline surface structure and LED featuring the M logo integrated below the trim element in the front passenger area. The light bar brings another element to the standard ambient lighting and features an alert function that can signal an incoming telephone call with a dynamic chaser light. The ambient lighting distribution, brightness, and color can be configured via the iDrive menu.

Familiar M accents, seat surfaces in new colors, new carbon gearshift paddles.

The standard M leather steering wheel in the new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition frame newly designed gearshift paddles in carbon fiber.
The interiors of both vehicles are upholstered extended Merino leather in a choice of two colors. Full Merino leather is available in six colors including the new BMW Individual Ivory White/Atlas Grey combination.

    Expanded suite of assistance systems.

The standard Parking Assistant Professional package now incorporates both the Reversing Assistant and the advanced Maneuver Assistant. The Reversing Assistant is able to store steering movements for distances of up to 200 meters and then reproduce them in reverse. Drivers also have the ability to control maneuvers into and out of especially tight parking spaces from outside the vehicle using the My BMW App on their smartphone (available for Apple iPhones running iOS 16.2 or later). The Maneuver Assistant is capable of recording up to ten maneuvers at different locations covering a distance of up to 200 meters each (with a maximum total distance of 600 meters) and subsequently performing them as an automated routine. The driver is able to control each maneuver either from inside the vehicle or remotely using their Apple iPhone while they monitor the vehicle’s surroundings.

M Setup menu and M Mode for a customized performance experience.

At the heart of the M-specific control/operation concept is the M Setup menu. The Setup button located on the center console provides direct access to the settings options for the engine, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive. This enables the driver to tailor every detail of the overall vehicle setup to the prevailing driving situation and their individual preferences.

Two individually configured setup variants can be stored permanently, together with the preferred settings for the engine note, the DSC system, the Automatic Start/Stop function and the shift characteristics of the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission. Either configuration can then be selected by pressing one of the two M buttons on the steering wheel. The driver’s preferred setups can be saved and assigned to one of the two M buttons as soon as they have been configured in the menu in the new BMW X5 Competition and BMW X6 M Competition.

The amount of content shown in the information display and M specific BMW head-up display can also be individually tailored, as can the level of driver assistance system functionality. After pressing the M Mode button on the center console, drivers are able to activate the desired setting with a touch of the control display. Besides the default ROAD setting and SPORT mode, they are also offered the choice of TRACK mode as standard in the new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition. This last mode fully deactivates the assistance systems at the same time as switching to a reduced selection of readouts focused purely on driving-related information.

Digital advances with new BMW iDrive, BMW Curved Display, and BMW Operating System 8.

The new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition come as standard with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which brings with it an M-specific version of the latest-generation BMW iDrive interface. Powered by BMW Operating System 8, it comprises a BMW Curved Display formed by a 12.3-inch information display and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches. The new display grouping and the continually expanding capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant mean the new BMW iDrive has been deliberately geared towards touch control and natural speech.

M-specific content, including the familiar Shift Lights, appears in both the BMW Curved Display and the BMW head-up display.

The standard BMW Digital Key Plus enables customers to lock and unlock their X5 M Competition or X6 M Competition via security-enhanced ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology from a compatible smartphone running either the iOS or Android operating system. A conventional car key is no longer required. Simply approaching the car or walking away triggers the unlocking or locking process; there is no need for the customer to even remove their smartphone from their pocket.

The BMW Digital Key Plus can be set up using the My BMW App. The car owner can also share it – and therefore access to the vehicle – with up to five other users who have a smartphone with either iOS or Android.

New design details, expanded standard equipment, electrification across-the-board, and advancements in digital technology define the next stage in the evolution of BMW’s X5 Sports Activity Vehicle and X6 Sports Activity Coupe. The entire range of powertrains has been comprehensively reengineered. The plug-in hybrid drive in the 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e has significantly more power and a greater purely electric range than its predecessor. And the introduction of 48V mild-hybrid technology to the V8 engine has increased its power, performance, and refinement. Also pointing the way into the future are new systems for automated driving and parking, plus the latest-generation iDrive control system with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Operating System 8.

The 2024 BMW X5 and X6 will make their public debut at The Amelia Concours d’Elegance in March. Production of both models will begin in April 2023.

The new BMW X5: new design elements, illuminated BMW kidney grille.

The front fascia of the 2024 BMW X5 is characterized by a new design for the signature BMW headlights and kidney grille. The outlines of the new headlight units are 35 millimeters narrower. Its arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements point outwards and also serve as turn signal indicators.

The illuminated BMW kidney grille can be specified for the first time as an option on BMW X5 xDrive50e, X5 sDrive 40i, and X5 xDrive40i. The illumination is activated when one of the doors is opened and can be switched on or off manually by the driver via the iDrive menu.

The BMW kidney grille is now bordered by sculpted surfaces which bring a modern appeal to the front end. Vertical air curtains positioned at the outer edges emphasise the width of the new X5, and the lower air intake has a new horizontal trim detail and triangular apertures in its outer areas.

Newly designed air breathers, LED rear lights with X motif.

The air breathers in the front side panels of the BMW X5 also have a new design, with a dynamically curved element at the front – finished either in chrome or in black, depending on model or package – and three horizontal blades at their trailing edge.

At the rear, newly designed rear lights feature striking contours of fiber-optic light elements. The traditional L-shape is reflected horizontally, creating an ‘X’ motif within the rear lights.

The new BMW X5 can be specified with the optional M Sport package, which adds a front apron with M-specific design, roof rails in black high-gloss, M high-gloss Shadowline trim, and a rear apron with a dark-shaded inlay and trapezoidal tailpipe trim.

The new BMW X6: expressive front end design and standard M Sport package.

The BMW X6 created the Sports Activity Coupe segment, and in its third generation it continues to embody a powerful sporting character and forceful visual presence. The long, swooping roofline and crisp contour lines create a dynamically stretched silhouette.

As on the X5, the new X6 features slim headlight units with arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements. The dynamic intent of the new BMW X6 is futher highlighted by the now standard M Sport package, distinguished by an octagonal design element below the BMW kidney grille, prominent side apertures, and generous use of black surfaces.

Powerful styling at the back with slim lights extending well into the tailgate.

M-specific side skirts and M High-gloss Shadowline trim express the athletic character of the new BMW X6. The taut surfacing of the flanks and muscular shoulder lines transition smoothly into a powerful design at the rear. The slim taillights reach far into the tailgate, and their light signature is defined by the familiar L-shape of the rear light and brake light bars.

Flagship models with distinctive design features.

At the top of their respective model ranges, the new BMW X5 M60i xDrive and BMW X6 M60i xDrive feature unique design details. Features including double bars and an M logo for the BMW kidney grille, M exterior mirror caps in high-gloss black, and exhaust tailpipe trim in a quad-pipe style speak to the high performance attributes of the 8-cylinder models. BMW Curved Display with intuitive touch control and natural voice interation.

The fully digital BMW Curved Display is at the heart of the interior redesign for the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. It is made up of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches – both located behind a single glass surface. The touch control functionality of the BMW control display has brought about a significant reduction in the number of buttons and controls in favor of digital control for various functions.

Sensafin surfacing for the dashboard and a highly functional light bar.

The newly designed dashboard serves as the perfect stage for the BMW Curved Display. Its horizontal structure emphasises the width of the cabin, while the surfacing in standard leather-like Sensafin deepens the premium character of the interior. The central air vents in the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 are extremely slim and integrated into the instrument panel almost out of sight.

Another new interior feature is the ambient light bar with crystalline surface structure and crisp LED backlighting integrated below the trim element in the front passenger area. Interior light distribution, brightness, and choice of 15 colors can be configured via the iDrive menu. The ambient lighting system’s range of functions also includes the Welcome Light Carpet – which projects an unique graphic on the ground alongside the vehicle when the doors are unlocked or opened – and pulsating light signals that appear on the inner panelling of an open door when the engine is running.

Control panel in the center console with new toggle gear selector.

Additional touch-sensitive surfaces are found on the new version of the control panel on the center console. It is home to the iDrive controller, engine start/stop button, and the buttons activating the electric parking brake, and the settings for the optional air suspension. Also found here are the Driving Experience Control buttons and the newly designed toggle gear selector.

Exclusive glass applications for the selector toggle, the start/stop button, and the iDrive controller are included with the optional Executive Package.

The standard sport seats in the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 offer outstanding comfort as well as lateral support when the road gets twisty. Mulit-contour front seats are optional, and may be equipped with ventilation (as part of the Climate Comfort Package) and massage functions. The standard Sensafin upholstery, with its bold quilting decorative perforation, can be ordered in Silverstone, Coffee, Cognac, or Black (and striking Tacora Red is available on X6). Extended Merino leather is also available in Ivory, Coffee, Black, and Tartufo.

Powertrains with 48V mild-hybrid technology and an innovative plug-in hybrid system.

A thoroughly updated range of engines, newly enhanced with electrification, enables the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 to deliver driving pleasure with greater poise, assurance, and efficiency. The V8 engines in the M60i models now benefit from 48V mild-hybrid technology, while the new X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid gains an extensively upgraded combustion engine and BMW eDrive technology that endows it with nearly 100 more horsepower while increasing the range of purely electric driving by 10 miles.

More power, more electric range: the BMW X5 xDrive50e.

The new BMW X5 xDrive50e combines a substantially revised gasoline engine with an electric drive unit to enhance both dynamic capability and efficiency. The new powertrain produces a maximum system output of up to 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque while permitting a preliminary estimated electric-only range of up to 40 miles.

The combustion engine and electric motor play an equal role in bringing these results. The latest incarnation of the 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology utilizes the highly efficient Miller combustion cycle, which shortens the time the intake valves are open. This power unit also features redesigned combustion chambers and intake ports, a new dual (direct and port) injection system, and a cylinder head with an integrated exhaust manifold. The VANOS variable camshaft timing now works electrically.

The electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission on the new BMW X5 xDrive50e boasts a substantial increase in power output and a novel innovation for boosting torque delivery. The new synchronous motor produces a nominal output of 194 hp – 83 more than the previous version. A pre-gearing stage is used to increase the effective torque produced by the electric motor to a maximum 331 lb-ft at the transmission input for the motor. In this way, the compact electric motor is able to provide the sort of torque boost that could normally only be achieved using a far larger and heavier unit. The improved build-up of power resulting from the pre-gearing stage between the electric motor’s rotor and the transmission’s input shaft makes a clear difference both when accelerating off the line and when putting in a quick burst of speed for passing. The new BMW X5 xDrive50e needs just 4.6 seconds to sprint from 0-60 mph in preliminary testing.

The electric motor draws its energy from a BMW 5th generation high-voltage lithium-ion battery mounted under the floor. The battery can store 25.7 kWh of usable energy, an increase of almost 25 percent compared with the preceding generation. A new Combined Charging Unit supports both single-phase and three-phase charging, doubling the maximum AC charging rate to 7.4 kW. Together with the electric motor’s excellent efficiency and the system of intelligent energy management, including adaptive recuperation, this results in an estimated electric range of up to 40 miles (estimated range of up to 40 miles according to preliminary BMW AG tests based on the EPA’s test procedure standards).

Latest-generation 48V mild hybrid technology for the internal combustion engines.

Electrification in the form of 48V mild hybrid technology enhances the effortless power delivery in the ICE variants of the new BMW X5 and BMW X6, while also increasing their efficiency. The 6 and 8-cylinder combustion engines are combined with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with an integrated electric motor. The electric motor generates an output boost of up to 12 hp and 147 lb-ft of torque, helping the engine to deliver a smooth, dynamic drive along with high efficiency. The electric motor has the additional effect of enabling smoother operation of both the Automatic Start/Stop function and the coasting function active when the ECO PRO mode is selected.

The energy required for the electric power boost is stored in a 48V battery located in the engine compartment. It is charged during overrun and braking by means of adaptive recuperation and also feeds the regenerated energy to the vehicle’s electrical system.

New V8 for the M60i models.

The BMW X5 M60i xDrive and X6 M60i xDrive models are both powered by a newly developed TwinPower Turbo V8 engine. The 4.4-liter power unit can trace its genes back to engines used in motorsport, and utilizes the thermodynamic benefits of a cross-bank exhaust manifold, bank-symmetrical turbochargers, and external engine oil cooling. In addition, a reinforced crankshaft drive, further developed turbocharging with a blow-off valve, a new oil pump, and a weight-minimized oil sump all play a role in increasing the engine’s efficiency. The engine is paired with 48V mild hybrid technology to produce superior response and power delivery under acceleration.

In both models, the S68 engine produces 523 hp and peak torque of 553 lb-ft. It propels the new X5 M60i xDrive and new X6 M60i xDrive from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds in preliminary testing.

More power, lower emissions: the new inline 6.

The power unit under the hood of the new BMW X5 xDrive40i and BMW X6 xDrive40i is part of a new generation of inline 6-cylinder engines, as is the engine in the BMW X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid. The 3.0-liter unit’s output of 375 hp in these two models is up by 40 compared its predecessor, while peak torque rises by 51 lb-ft to 383 – and can be boosted to as much as 398 lb-ft with the input of the mild-hybrid system. It enables both the new BMW X5 xDrive40i and new BMW X6 xDrive40i to dash from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds in preliminary testing.

This version of the new straight-six engine also benefits from extensive innovations affecting the combustion process, camshaft control, injection, ignition system and exhaust gas routing. It also features the latest version of VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control. Its switchable rocker arms on the exhaust side allow gas exchange to be shut off entirely if required, thereby reducing the engine’s frictional torque on the overrun by around two thirds, resulting in greater recouperation of braking energy.

The latest-generation 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission fitted to all variants of the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 comes with a host of innovations over and above the electric motor integrated into its housing. For example, the unit’s internal efficiency, vibration damping and isolation from rotational irregularities have all been optimized. A new electric transmission oil pump and a system of torsion dampers serve to increase not just efficiency, but also shift smoothness and driving comfort. And the shift characteristics are now adapted to the Driving Experience Control switch setting. The transmission automatically switches from the D setting to S when SPORT mode is activated.

In the 8-cylinder models and 6-cylinder models with the M Sport package, drivers will also be able to make use of the Sprint function when a quick burst of speed required. Here, the transmission automatically shifts into the lowest usable gear when the driver pulls the left-hand shift paddle for at least one second. At the same time, all of the powertrain and chassis systems are switched to their sportiest settings and the mild-hybrid system’s electric boost effect is activated.

Optional chassis systems in newly structured packages.

The Adaptive M Suspension fitted as standard on the X5 M60i, X6 xDrive40i, and X6 M60i models and optional on X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, results in a noticeably more direct connection to the road. Electronically controlled dampers refine handling dynamics as well as primary ride comfort. Electromagnetically adjustable hydraulic valves allow the compression and rebound settings to be adapted in unison to suit the driving situation. The dampers respond adaptively both to road surface conditions and to driving style. The driver can use the Driving Experience Control switch to choose between a comfort-focused mode and a stiffer damper setting for a sportier response.

The optional adaptive two-axle air suspension (standard on X5 xDrive50e) with automatic self-levelling employs an electrically driven compressor with pressure reservoir to maintain the optimum ride height at all speeds, regardless of how much load is being carried. The result is comfortable, assured handling. The ride height is automatically lowered by 10 millimeters at speeds above 86 mph.

Integral Active Steering for greater agility, comfort and maneuverability.

Integral Active Steering is now standard on M60i versions of the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 and has a beneficial effect on the vehicles’ agility, driving comfort, and maneuverability.

With Integral Active Steering, the rear wheels are turned in either the same direction as or the opposite direction to the front wheels, depending on road speed. This results in highly dynamic cornering abilities and assured lane changes at high speeds. Furthermore, the rear wheels can now be turned by up to three degrees until the vehicle is nearly stopped, reducing its turning circle when maneuvering into and out of parking spaces.

All 2024 X5s and X6s are fitted as standard with 20-inch wheels mounted on all-season runflat tires. Performance runflat tires are available in a 21-inch size, and performance non-runflat tires are available in a 22-inch size. Customers can choose from a selection of standard, M, and BMW Individual alloy wheels in 20, 21, and 22-inch sizes.

Driving Assistant Professional Package now offers Highway Assistant.

The new Highway Assistant, part of the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package, ushers in a new dimension of assisted driving in the 2024 BMW X5 and X6, bringing with it new levels of convenience and stress-free travel over long distances. It allows the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel when driving on limited access highways at speeds up to 85 mph. Drivers must, however, always maintain focus on the road ahead and be prepared to assume responsibility for steering.

Assisted View in the instrument cluster gives the driver an overview of the activated systems and their functionality. The central area of the information display is reserved for a three-dimensional mock-up of the vehicle and its surroundings. Here, the driver can see an image of the cars, trucks and motorcycles detected by the cameras and sensors in the driver’s current lane, along with those in any adjacent lanes.

Parking Assistant Professional: enter and exit spaces by smartphone.

Drivers can also benefit from greater assistance when parking and maneuvering. The standard Reversing Assistant offers the option of automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as multi-story parking garages or narrow curving driveways. The vehicle can store the steering movements for any section the vehicle has just driven forward through at no more than 22 mph. The system is then able to reverse the vehicle for distances of up to 50 meters by steering it back along the same route.

On models fitted with the optional Parking Assistant Professional, the Reversing Assistant is able to store steering movements for distances of up to 200 meters and then reproduce them in reverse. Furthermore, drivers now have the ability to control maneuvers into and out of especially tight parking spaces from outside the vehicle using the My BMW App on their smartphone (available for Apple iPhones with operating system iOS 16.2 or later).

In addition, the Maneuver Assistant now included in the Parking Assistant Professional package is able to store far more complex maneuvers using GPS data and the trajectory data from steering movements, and perform them as an automated routine. As many as ten maneuvers at different locations, covering a distance of up to 200 meters each and a combined total of 600 meters, can be recorded. When the vehicle arrives at a memorized starting point, the Maneuver Assistant will be able to carry out all the tasks required to complete the maneuver, controlling the accelerator, brakes and steering, as well as changing gear to move forward or reverse. If necessary, the vehicle can switch between the two directions of travel repeatedly while carrying out all the gear changes and steering inputs, for example when negotiating its way through a parking garage with little space and sharp corners. While the automated maneuver is in progress, the driver can focus on monitoring the vehicle’s surroundings.

Drivers have the choice of controlling both the automated parking functionality and the Maneuver Assistant’s actions either from inside the vehicle or remotely using their iPhone. It is also possible to switch between the two modes, meaning that once an automated parking or other maneuver has begun, it can be interrupted at any time and then resumed from inside the vehicle or from outside using a smartphone.

BMW Curved Display and latest-generation BMW iDrive.

The new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 are fitted with the latest-generation BMW iDrive multi-sensory vehicle interface powered by BMW Operating System 8. Boasting new-generation software as well as powerful connectivity and data processing, it takes the interaction between the driver and vehicle into the digital future. The new BMW iDrive system offers more ways for drivers to enjoy easy, intuitive, multimodal control of vehicle, navigation, infotainment, and communication functions and also to use digital services.

The user experience is supported by the seamless interaction between the touchscreen BMW Curved Display, the voice control, the iDrive controller, and the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel. The display and operation system has been upgraded to include the latest version of the BMW head-up display, which offers a larger display area, enhanced graphics and additional content. The user experience can also be expanded to include the optional BMW Gesture Control.

Fully digital BMW Curved Display with state-of-the-art graphics.

The BMW Curved Display in the new BMW X5 and the new BMW X6 is formed by a 12.3-inch information display and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches. The screens are housed together behind a curved glass surface, so they merge into a single, fully digital, high-resolution unit. With its ergonomic, driver-centric positioning, the BMW Curved Display makes the already intuitive touch control even more user-friendly.

The BMW Curved Display’s state-of-the-art graphics and the operation system’s menu structure have been designed with a smartphone-style appearance. The clearly structured arrangement of widgets on the control display’s home screen provides a simple overview of the menu options and can be configured by the driver as desired.

Natural dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The new generation of BMW iDrive also sees the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant gain additional skills. Instructions in natural speech can be used to adjust the air conditioning, open a window or operate the panoramic glass roof, for instance. Various functions of the driver assistance systems in the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 can likewise be voice controlled. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is also capable of recognizing user behavior and proactively making suggestions to the driver on how the vehicle can best be used.

When the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is in use, new graphics appear in the displays to emphasize the system’s interactive character. The graphic “turns” towards the speaker, thereby visualizing how the system is listening attentively to what is being said.

Precision navigating with Augmented View in the information display.

The new Augmented View function included as part of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional enables accurate guidance while driving by supplementing the navigation system’s map view. A live video stream from the driver’s perspective can be shown on either the control or information display and augmented by supplementary graphics that provide more specific, situation-based information. When dealing with confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best turn-off for the planned route.

Welcome Scenario with lighting effect and personal greeting.

The user experience starts before the driver has even reached the vehicle thanks to a newly devised Welcome Scenario. Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology determines the precise location of the key or compatible smartphone relative to the vehicle.  Once the distance to the vehicle drops below three meters, the coordinated welcome sequence begins. It starts with an orchestrated lighting effect using the exterior and interior lights, including the light carpet. The vehicle automatically unlocks when the driver is about 1.5 meters away. Once inside, the BMW Curved Display shows a choreographed start-up animation with a personal greeting, along with handy suggestions and information. Finally, the BMW ID settings are loaded, and the smartphone connected.

    BMW Digital Key Plus.

BMW’s Comfort Access keyless entry system now also includes the BMW Digital Key Plus. This enables customers to lock and unlock their BMW X5 or BMW X6 via security-enhanced ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology from a compatible smartphone running either the iOS or Android operating system.

Emotionally engaging drive sound, even in locally emission-free driving mode: BMW IconicSounds Electric for the BMW X5 xDrive50e.

With BMW IconicSounds Electric included as standard, the joy of driving while generating zero local emissions is accompanied by a special sound design inside the vehicle that provides authentic aural feedback to every movement of the accelerator pedal.

The car’s soundtrack was developed as part of a collaboration between the BMW Group and film score composer Hans Zimmer. Different versions of the model-specific drive sound are created depending on the mode selected with the Driving Experience Control switch. Pressing the start/stop button additionally triggers an inspiring acoustic tone that signals the car is ready to drive.

Innovative functions for fully electric driving and user-friendly charging with the BMW X5 xDrive50e.

The BMW Charging range of services has now also been integrated into the My BMW App. For example, the user can now control charging of the car’s high-voltage battery remotely by smartphone. Their preferred departure time can be entered to display the charge level the battery is expected to have reached by that point. And when the vehicle is plugged in, charging can be started or stopped at any time from the My BMW App, regardless of the charge level.

  • BMW M3 CS

Continuing the celebrated lineage of legendary CS models is the very special, limited-edition 2024 BMW M3 CS. Today, CS stands for “Competition Sport”; the designation given to exclusive BMW M models equally at home on road and track. More power, unique chassis calibration, and intelligent lightweight construction featuring carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) components deliver an exhilarating performance experience without sacrificing the functionality and everyday usability of the BMW M3.

The 2024 BMW M3 CS teams a 543-hp inline-6 with an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and the M xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. Together, they hurl the M3 CS from 0-60 mph in only 3.2 seconds.

The new BMW M3 CS will be built in limited numbers at BMW Group Plant Munich starting in March 2023.

M TwinPower Turbo inline-6 with Motorsport experience.

Under the lightweight CFRP hood of the 2024 BMW M3 CS is an upgraded version of the high-revving inline 6-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology developed for the M3 and M4. This 3.0-liter unit also forms the basis of the engine that powers the BMW M4 GT3 and boasts a wealth of technological details derived directly from racing experience. Its crankcase has a sleeveless, closed-deck construction and is extremely rigid, making it suitable for very high combustion pressures. The forged lightweight crankshaft aids power build-up with its high torsional resistance and allows for high revs. The cylinder head has a 3D-printed core, allowing the coolant ducts to be routed in an optimum arrangement for temperature management that would be impossible to achieve using conventional metal casting methods. The oil supply system is designed to handle the specific challenges of track use, as is the cooling system.

The S58 engine in the M3 CS receives a 40-hp increase over the unit in the M3 Competition, for a peak of 543 hp from 6,250 to the 7,200 rpm redline. This increase in power was achieved. primarily by raising the maximum boost pressure of the two mono-scroll turbochargers from 24.7 psi to 30.5 psi and making some model-specific changes to the engine management.

Just as important as the power at the top of the rev range, the engine produces 479 lb-ft of torque from a low 2,750 rpm all the way to 5,950 rpm. Specially-designed engine mounts create an extremely rigid connection between the engine and the vehicle’s structure. Drivers will notice throttle inputs result in sharp engine response and direct transmission of power and torque to the drivetrain.

All of these enhancements result in consistent power delivery throughout the rev range accompanied by a stirring soundtrack from the dual-branch exhaust system featuring electrically controlled flaps, a titanium rear silencer with weight-minimizing design, and two pairs of tailpipes finished in matte black.

    8-speed M Steptronic transmission, M xDrive, Active M Differential.

The torque delivered by the engine in the new BMW M3 CS is distributed via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic to the M xDrive all-wheel drive system, which uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case to ensure smooth and fully variable distribution of power between the front and rear axles. The multi-plate clutch’s oil supply has been optimized to keep the system performing effectively under hard driving on the track. The rear-biased system paired with the fully variable Active M Differential rewards the driver with the signature M feeling when accelerating or carving through corners.

The M Setup menu lets the driver switch from the default 4WD setting to 4WD Sport mode, which directs even more of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. Drivers can also switch the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system off altogether and engage 2WD mode. By sending drive power solely to the rear wheels and suppressing any DSC intervention, skilled drivers are free to explore their limits and revel in a pure high performance driving experience.

The engine, transmission, and M xDrive join forces to produce stunning acceleration times. The new BMW M3 CS takes just 3.2 seconds to achieve 60 mph. The M Driver’s Package is standard equipment, which allows an electronically limited top speed of 188 mph.

Unique chassis technology tuning; available track-oriented tires.

The chassis technology in the new BMW M3 CS has been tuned precisely to the engine’s performance characteristics and vehicle weight distribution, and the calibrations of the DSC system and M Dynamic Mode, also specific to the CS, have been purposefully geared to the demands of track driving.

The specially tuned axle kinematics and unique wheel camber settings, dampers, and anti-roll bars serve to optimize steering precision, transmission of lateral control forces when cornering, spring and damping response, and wheel location. The electronically controlled dampers of the adaptive M suspension are specifically tuned for the M3 CS, as is the electromechanical M Servotronic steering with variable ratio and the integrated braking system.

M Compound brakes with offered in a choice of red or black calipers are standard on the M3 CS. Drivers may also opt for M Carbon ceramic brakes with calipers in either red or gold. Also standard are forged M light-alloy wheels in an exclusive V-spoke design finished in Gold Bronze or matte black. Measuring 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear, those wheels may be fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires at no cost, measuring 275/35ZR19 at the front and 285/30ZR20 at the rear. The M3 CS is fitted as standard with conventional high-performance tires in those same sizes if the Cup 2s are not specified.

Lightweight construction with extensive use of carbon fiber; improved body rigidity.

Reducing weight where possible plays a major role in delivering the performance qualities and exclusive character of the new BMW M3 CS; therefore, the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) both inside and out is of key importance. Besides its carbon fiber roof, the M3 CS also uses this lightweight, high-tech material for the hood, front splitter, front air intakes, exterior mirror caps, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler. The center console, shift paddles, and interior trim strips are also made from CFRP. The standard M Carbon bucket seats reduce weight in the cabin and provide exceptional comfort on the road and support in high-performance driving sessions. Additionally, the titanium rear silencer shaves more than eight pounds off the weight of the exhaust system fitted to the new BMW M3 CS. In total, the various lightweight design measures save about 75 pounds compared to the  BMW  M3 Competition with M xDrive.

Body rigidity is further increased by a package of high-precision strut braces for the engine compartment. The cast aluminum elements connecting the spring strut towers to the front end feature a weight-optimized geometry that has been precisely matched to the forces applied in various driving situations.

Exclusive design features promise thrilling performance.

The 2024 BMW M3 CS announces its sharper character with a series of individual design features. The optional BMW Individual Frozen Solid White metallic paint is exclusive to the M3 CS. Exposed carbon fiber surfaces for the roof, the two channels running the length of the hood, the front splitter, front air intakes, M exterior mirror caps, rear spoiler and rear apron combine with the black side skirts and M gills to provide a bold contrast to the unique paint finish. Brooklyn Grey metallic, Black Sapphire metallic, and BMW Individual Signal Green are also available.

The CS sports a special frameless BMW kidney grille with pared-back styling reminiscent of the M4 GT3, and features red contour lines and an “M3 CS” badge on the upper of the two horizontal grille bars.

The angular daytime running light elements illuminate in yellow rather than white during the unlock sequence as well as while driving, further evoking the look of GT racing cars.

M Carbon bucket seats with exclusive surfaces and stitch patterns.

Inside the new BMW M3 CS, an environment built around driving pleasure and maximum performance blends advanced digital technology and exclusive design elements. The driver and front passenger are provided standard M Carbon bucket seats. Fully electric and heated, they feature integral headrests with an illuminated “CS” badge. The use of CFRP in the structural elements of the seat cushion and backrest as well as the cut-outs in the side bolsters and below the head restraints are testimony to the seats’ weight-minimizing construction.

The seats are upholstered in Merino leather and feature an exclusive design in black with Mugello red accents and distinctive contrast stitching. This bi-color theme is echoed in the rear compartment. The door panels are trimmed entirely in black leather in both the front and the rear, and red “CS” lettering adorns the lightweight center console. The new BMW M3 CS also includes M seat belts woven with the BMW M tricolor stripes, door sill plates bearing “M3 CS” badging, interior trim strips in carbon fiber, and an M Alcantara steering wheel with CFRP shift paddles and a red center marker.

Standard M Drive Professional with M Traction Control and M Lap Timer.

Also fitted as standard in the new BMW M3 CS is M Drive Professional. M Drive Professional bundles together the M Drift Analyzer and M Laptimer functions for evaluating and recording driving skills and performance at the track and includes M Traction Control, offering ten stages of intervention sensitivity: the ideal tools for pushing the CS hard on closed circuits.

The M Mode button on the center console – also part of the M Drive Professional package – can be used to set the level of driver assistance system intervention and the content shown in the information display and standard Head-Up Display, with a choice of ROAD, SPORT and TRACK settings.

BMW Curved Display with M-specific graphics.

The new BMW M3 CS features the latest-generation BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8, which includes the BMW Curved Display. This is formed by a 12.3-inch information display and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches, which are housed together behind a curved glass surface. With its ergonomic driver-centric positioning, the BMW Curved Display makes the already intuitive touch control even more user-friendly.

The information display’s crisp graphics and the M‑specific content create a focused, performance-led driving environment. All driving-related data as well as vehicle status and settings information are neatly arranged within it. The familiar M Shift Lights appear at the top of the information display, while the driving stability system, M xDrive, and traction control modes are all indicated at the lower edge. Special widgets containing information on the current vehicle setup, as well as tire pressure and temperature, can be added to the control display’s home screen.

  • BMW i Vision Dee Concept

The BMW Group is sharing its vision of the future digital experience, both inside and outside the vehicle, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 in Las Vegas. BMW i Vision Dee is the futuristic mid-size sedan with a new and pared-down design language. The name “Dee” stands for Digital Emotional Experience – and that is precisely its aim: to create an even stronger bond between people and their cars going forward. Future digital functions will go far beyond the level of voice control and driver assistance systems we are familiar with today. The BMW Head-Up-Display extends across the full width of the windscreen, providing a glimpse of the next vehicle generation. From 2025 onwards, this innovation will be available in the models of the NEUE KLASSE. The BMW Group has also refined its use of colour-change technology. Having unveiled the BMW iX Flow Featuring E Ink, with the ability to change from black to white, at the last CES, BMW i Vision Dee can now curate its exterior in up to 32 colours.

“With the BMW i Vision Dee, we are showcasing what is possible when hardware and software merge. In this way, we are able to exploit the full potential of digitalisation to transform the car into an intelligent companion. That is the future for automotive manufacturers – and, also, for BMW: the fusion of the virtual experience with genuine driving pleasure,” said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW

AG. “At the same time, BMW i Vision Dee is another step on the road to the NEUE KLASSE. With this vision, we are looking far into the future and underlining the tremendous importance of digitalisation for our upcoming product generations.”

With its intelligent, almost human capabilities, BMW i Vision Dee accompanies drivers not only through real-life situations on the roads, but also in their digital environment.

“A BMW lives by its unparalleled digital performance. BMW i Vision Dee is about perfect integration of virtual and physical experiences,” said Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Development. “Whoever excels at integrating the customer’s everyday digital worlds into the vehicle at all levels will succeed in mastering the future of car-building.”

BMW Mixed Reality Slider: into the virtual world in five steps

The BMW Mixed Reality Slider, in combination with the advanced Head-up Display, is the digital highlight and central operating control of BMW i Vision Dee. Using shy-tech sensors on the instrument panel, drivers can decide for themselves how much digital content they want to see on the advanced Head-Up Display. The five-step selection ranges from analogue, to driving-related information, to the contents of the communications system, to augmented-reality projection, right up to entry into virtual worlds. In parallel, dimmable windows can also be used to gradually fade out reality. Mixed reality can be experienced in BMW i Vision Dee in an immersive way that engages different senses without requiring any additional tools, creating a new dimension of driving pleasure for the user.

Advanced BMW Head-Up-Display: in NEUE KLASSE from 2025

The BMW Group is known in the automotive sector as a trailblazer for the Head-Up-Display and has systematically refined this technology over the past two decades. In BMW i Vision Dee, projection across the entire width of the windscreen allows information to be displayed on the largest possible surface – which only becomes recognisable as a display once it is activated. In this way, the BMW Group demonstrates the huge potential of projection technology and BMW i Vision Dee visualises how a advanced Head-Up-Display could also be utilised in the future for the display and operating concept. The standard-production version of the BMW Head-up-

Display extending across the full width of the windscreen will be used in the models of the NEUE KLASSE from 2025 onwards.

Welcome scenario with voice and phygital icons

The digital experience already begins outside the vehicle, with a personalised welcome scenario that combines graphical elements, light and sound effects. Natural language serves as the simplest, most intuitive form of interaction, enabling perfect understanding between humans and their vehicles. The headlights and the closed BMW kidney grille also form a common phygital (fusion of physical and digital) icon on a uniform surface, allowing the vehicle to produce different facial expressions. This means BMW i Vision Dee can talk to people and, at the same time, express moods such as joy, astonishment or approval visually. BMW i Vision Dee can also project an image of the driver’s avatar onto the side window to further personalise the welcome scenario.

World premiere for full-colour E Ink technology

Following the spectacular debut of the BMW iX Flow Featuring E Ink at CES 2022, the BMW Group is now unveiling a full-colour version of the E Ink technology in BMW i Vision Dee that will be used as the outer skin of the vehicle for the first time worldwide.

BMW i Vision Dee, rather than simply alternating between black and white, now showcases a multi-coloured, fully variable and individually configurable exterior. An ePaper film from the BMW Group’s cooperation partner, E Ink, is applied to the body to create this magical display of colour. Up to 32 colours can be displayed.

The body surface of the BMW i Vision Dee is divided into 240 E Ink segments, each of which is controlled individually. This allows an almost infinite variety of patterns to be generated and varied within seconds. The laser cutting process used to trim the films and the electronic control design were developed in partnership with E Ink. The adaptation of this technology for curved surfaces and the programming of the animations were developed by BMW Group’s in-house engineers – enabling a form of customisation that is unique throught the automotive sector worldwide.

Reductive design – inside and out

The design of BMW i Vision Dee has been deliberately pared down to focus attention on the digital experience and the DNA of the BMW brand. The exterior is defined by the classic three-box sedan design that forms the core of the BMW brand. Traditional design elements, like the BMW kidney grille, twin circular headlights and the Hofmeister kink, are reimagined, with phygital icons replacing analogue elements. This gives BMW i Vision Dee its own digital, but human, character.

Inside, digitalisation goes hand in hand with reductive use of materials, operating controls and displays to ensure nothing distracts from the digital experience and the new feeling of enhanced driving pleasure. The unconventional design of the steering wheel, with its central vertical spoke, creates touchpoints that come to life when approached or touched and can be operated by moving the thumb. These phygital touchpoints control selection of the content projected onto the windscreen and, together with the Head-Up Display, thus support the principle of “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road”.

“With BMW i Vision Dee, we are showing how the car can be seamlessly integrated into your digital life and become a trusty companion. The vehicle itself becomes your portal to the digital world – with the driver always in control,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design. “Implemented the right way, technology will create worthwhile experiences, make you a better driver and simply bring humans and machines closer together.”

Another milestone on the road to the NEUE KLASSE

The future of the BMW Group is electric, circular and digital. BMW i Vision Dee represents the digital aspect of this trio and will be another milestone on the road to the next vehicle generation, the NEUE KLASSE. The BMW Group will provide further insights and glimpses of the revolutionary vehicle concept of the NEUE KLASSE over the course of 2023.

  • BMW M Hybrid V8 Racecar

The BMW M Hybrid V8 has arrived in North America and was presented to the public in its racing colours for the first time at a launch event at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles (USA). The first prototype developed by BMW M Motorsport in 25 years will sport an avant-garde livery which leverages the iconic BMW M colours when it competes in the GTP class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2023. The four core drivers who will take their place at the wheel of the two BMW M Team RLL cars were also announced at the Petersen Museum. They are BMW M works drivers Connor De Phillippi (USA), Philipp Eng (AUT), Augusto Farfus (BRA) and Nick Yelloly (GBR). When the car makes its race debut at Daytona (USA) in January 2023, they will receive big-name support from IndyCar series driver Colton Herta (USA).

Like the camouflage livery which the BMW M Hybrid V8 utilises while testing, the design for the racing season also comes from BMW Group Designworks under the programme leadership of Michael Scully. The works livery represents a significant departure from the heritage-based ‘Icons of IMSA’ camouflage with a future-facing coat of arms comprised of modern, bold, fractal blocks of the iconic M colours and the M logo. “These elements have been deconstructed to form what at first might appear to be an abstract triangular pattern across the BMW M Hybrid V8, but when viewed from the side, the M logo clicks right into place. – M reconstructed, if you will,” Scully explained.

The design also features ‘Mbedded’ references to the BMW logo, and utilises both blue and purple elements to pronounce the natural colours of electricity. Additionally the works livery carries BMW M Motorsport’s now-signature matte black extension ahead of the cockpit beneath the driver’s side of the windscreen, thereby extending BMW’s interior design hallmark of driver orientation to the exterior of the car for enhanced driver focus. In fact on the race-ready cars this non-reflective matt element will be the only black foil on the car, as all other black areas shown at the launch will remain in their native carbon fibre finish. “This measure allows us to reduce weight by 25 to 30 percent compared to a conventional livery for race cars. Less is more,” said Scully.

The debut of the BMW M Hybrid V8’s works livery also gives the first chance to see the car’s surfaces in non-camouflaged guise and to identify aspects of the design, which may have been previously obscured. The layout of the laser-lit kidneys coincides with the open, flow-through architecture of a modern prototype race car, and the air which passes beneath and through them is fundamental to the aerodynamic performance of the car; both in terms of cooling, but also for efficiency of downforce. The front of the car invokes the faceted hood, nested BMW logo, and inverted ‘Y’ configuration between the kidneys of the BMW M Vision Next, and is a great example of BMW’s showcars informing not only the production cars, but also the race cars. These elements, flanked by signature twin headlights on each side, make the front of the car unmistakably a BMW.

The kidneys’ lighting uses an exciting new technology. Innovative Swiss company L.E.S.S. SA has developed a new approach as an alternative to LED lighting where light is generated by a nano-active optical fibre trigged by a laser. This provides ultra-bright and ultra-uniform light within a very small form factor such that it considerably saves weight and energy when embedded onto a car. This technology was also presented as a future vision for the first time in the BMW M Vision Next in 2019. “

Transitioning around the side of the car, other BMW icons become apparent: the forward-leaning shark nose, the boomerang-shaped guide vane just behind the front wheel arch that summons the BMW M4’s air breather feature, the M mirrors and a modern interpretation of the Hofmeister kink. The sidepod carries a defined diagonal feature line which punctuates the radiused surface above it and at the same time also helps define the requisite front diffuser airflow exit. “A great example of the interdependence between BMW design DNA and dedicated efficiency which makes racing projects like this so engaging,” said Scully.

  • BMW M2

The new BMW M2 delivers signature M performance in a highly concentrated form. With its 338 kW/460 hp six-cylinder in-line engine, an optionally available six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive, the second generation of the compact high-performance sports car promises unadulterated driving pleasure. The debut of the new BMW M2 marks another highlight event in the model offensive celebrating the 50-year anniversary of BMW M GmbH, while making the first step into the world of its high-performance cars an even more enticing one.

Compact dimensions together with powertrain and chassis technology adapted from the BMW M3/BMW M4 are at the heart of a vehicle concept that endows the new edition of the two-door model with beguiling agility and handling that remain easily controllable even as the driver explores the car’s limits. This distinct character profile also manifests itself in the expressive exterior design with its athletic coupé proportions. The sophisticated control/operating concept for customising the vehicle setup also helps to produce a performance experience of remarkable intensity. Thanks to these many attributes, the new BMW M2 continues the brand’s tradition of ultra-sporty models with compact dimensions that began in 1973 with the arrival of the BMW 2002 turbo. It is also building on the success of its predecessor, which notched up nearly 60,000 sales worldwide.

The global launch of the new BMW M2 will get underway in April 2023. It will be built alongside the new BMW 2 Series Coupé at the BMW Group’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico.

    Compact dimensions, extremely powerful proportions.

The athletic appearance of the new BMW M2 stems from its compact dimensions, extremely powerful proportions and hallmark M design features. It measures 214 millimetres less in exterior length than the BMW M4 Coupé models and has a 110-millimetre shorter wheelbase. At the same time, the vehicle and track widths exceed the figures for the new BMW 2 Series Coupé by a considerable margin.

The large, frameless BMW kidney grille with its horizontal bars combines with a three-section lower air intake with almost rectangular contours to give the front end of the car a familiar M look. The design has been crafted around technical requirements in terms of cooling air supply and aerodynamic balance. Clearly designed surfaces, prominently flared side skirts and muscular wheel arches set the tone for the side view. The rear end of the new BMW M2 also has a compact, powerful feel and adds a number of individual touches in the form of the eye-catching spoiler lip on the boot lid, the vertically arranged reflectors, the rear apron’s diffuser insert – with its puristic design – and the two pairs of exhaust tailpipes positioned a long way in from the outer edges.

The choice of five exterior paint finishes available for the new BMW M2 includes the Zandvoort Blue solid and Toronto Red metallic shades exclusive to this model. An M Carbon roof that reduces vehicle weight by around six kilograms is offered as an option.

Six-cylinder in-line engine with instantaneous power delivery and a thrilling appetite for revs.

The version of the straight-six engine developed for the compact high-performance model with M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving design stands out with its M-typical performance characteristics. Differing only in a small number of details from the engine employed in the BMW M3 and BMW M4 models, the 3.0-litre unit thrills with its urgent response, healthy appetite for revs and linear power delivery into the highest reaches of the engine speed range.

Developing a maximum output of 338 kW/460 hp, the engine under the bonnet of the new BMW M2 outguns the base unit used by its predecessor by 66 kW/90 hp. Peak torque of 550 Nm (405 lb-ft) is produced between 2,650 and 5,870 rpm with maximum output arriving at 6,250 rpm. The new engine revs to a maximum 7,200 rpm. The pulsating build-up of power is accompanied by an emotionally rich soundtrack generated by the M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps. The system of oil supply is designed to handle extremely dynamic driving situations when out on the track, as is the cooling system.

A choice of performance experience: eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic as standard, six-speed manual gearbox as an option.

The engine’s power is relayed to the rear wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic as standard. Its extremely sporty gear shifts, direct connection to the engine and ability to execute multiple downshifts to the lowest available gear form the ideal basis for beguiling, instantaneous acceleration. It is operated by means of a selector lever sporting the latest M design as well as shift paddles on the steering wheel. The Drivelogic function offers a choice of three shift settings.

A six-speed manual gearbox is available as an option for anyone seeking a performance experience in the classical mould, rooted in the intense interaction between driver and car. It lends itself to a sporty style of driving thanks not only to its precisely defined shift action, but also the Gear Shift Assistant, which uses engagement speed control to ensure slip-free operation when downshifting under braking into corners. If required, the Gear Shift Assistant can be deactivated in the M Setup menu.

The new BMW M2 completes the sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 4.1 seconds with the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and in 4.3 seconds when fitted with the six-speed manual gearbox. It is capable of powering from 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 13.5 seconds (automatic) or 14.3 seconds (manual). The limited top speed of the new BMW M2 can be raised from 250 km/h (155 mph) to 285 km/h (177 mph) by specifying the optional M Driver’s Package.

Rear-wheel drive, M Traction Control and Active M Differential provide agility, precision and driving pleasure as the occasion demands.

Regardless of the choice of transmission, the new BMW M2’s traditional form of dynamic performance is also embodied by its rear-wheel drive. The linear build-up of lateral acceleration forces characteristic of M models helps the driver to guide the car through corners with controlled drifts, for example. The standard M Traction Control function is also designed to allow the driver to carefully probe the vehicle’s performance limits by setting individual intervention thresholds for wheel slip limitation, with a choice of ten stages.

Another contributor to the sublime dynamics of the BMW M2 is the Active M Differential at the rear axle. Also included as standard, it is able to seamlessly generate a locking effect of up to 100 per cent whenever required. This optimises traction on road surfaces offering different levels of adhesion for the left- and right-hand rear wheel, for example, as well as improving power transfer when accelerating hard out of corners.

Sophisticated chassis technology, precisely controllable handling.

The new BMW M2’s compact dimensions, short wheelbase, almost perfectly balanced 50:50 weight distribution and sophisticated chassis technology combine to deliver precisely controllable, fingertip handling. The car’s agility, dynamism and precision also gain from the excellent torsional stiffness of the body structure and chassis mountings helped by bespoke bracing.

Both the double-joint spring strut front axle and the five-link rear axle come with M-specific kinematics. The standard equipment roster for the new BMW M2 includes adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Servotronic steering with variable ratio, DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) including M Dynamic Mode, and powerful M Compound brakes with six-piston, fixed-calliper brakes at the front and single-piston, floating-calliper brakes at the rear. The integrated braking system presents the driver with two pedal feel settings. The new BMW M2 comes with 19-inch light-alloy wheels at the front and 20-inch items at the rear, each representing an increase of one inch on the diameter of the wheels fitted as standard on the BMW M3 and BMW M4 models. There is also the option of fitting them with track tyres.

Advanced sports car cockpit with BMW Curved Display as standard and the option of M Carbon bucket seats.

The new BMW M2 boasts a cockpit with a driver-centric design featuring M-specific readouts, controls and setup options, as well as the advanced BMW Curved Display. Driving-related information including Shift Lights appears in a new graphical layout on the 12.3-inch information display. M-specific widgets for vehicle setup and tyre condition are just two of the items that can be called up in the 14.9-inch control display. The optional BMW Head-Up Display also features M-specific readouts.

Both the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant form part of the latest-generation BMW iDrive. Based on BMW Operating System 8, it has been purpose designed for intuitive interaction between driver and vehicle using touch control and natural language. The new BMW iDrive system enables personalisation with the BMW ID and My BMW App as well as allowing a Personal eSIM to be used in the vehicle. Smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ is likewise included as standard on the new BMW M2, and there is also a 5G antenna system for optimised connectivity.

The driver and front passenger are welcomed as standard by sport seats in a model-specific design with Sensatec/Alcantara surfaces. M Sport seats with integral head restraints and perforated surfaces in Vernasca leather/Sensatec are available as an alternative. The M Carbon bucket seats that can also be found on the options list use carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the structural elements of the seat cushion and backrest and also feature cut-outs in the side bolsters and below the head restraints, thereby shaving around 10.8 kilograms off the vehicle’s weight.

Three-zone automatic climate control, BMW Maps navigation system, Setup button and M Drive Professional as standard.

The comfort features fitted as standard in the new BMW M2 include three-zone automatic climate control, BMW Live Cockpit Plus complete with BMW Maps navigation system, ambient lighting and the Hi-Fi speaker system. When it comes to automated driving and parking systems, the Front Collision Warning, Speed Limit Display with no-overtaking indicator, Lane Departure Warning and Park Distance Control functions all come as standard. The Driving Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and the Parking Assistant including Reversing Assistant are just some of the options available.

The Setup button on the centre console provides direct access to the settings options for the engine, chassis, steering, braking system and M Traction Control, as well as the Gear Shift Assistant if fitted. Two overall vehicle setups can be stored and then retrieved using the M buttons on the steering wheel.

Besides M Traction Control, the standard-fit M Drive Professional also includes the M Drift Analyser and M Laptimer. Plus, the M Mode button on the centre console can be used to adjust both the level of driver assistance system activity and the content shown in the information display and Head-Up Display, with a choice of ROAD, SPORT and TRACK settings.

Also on the options list is the M Race Track Package, comprising the M Driver’s Package together with the M Carbon roof, M Carbon bucket seats, interior trim strips in Carbon Fibre finish and track tyres.
