  • Hyundai describes the new 2015 i20 in detail

    2015-Hyundai-i20_thumb2015-Hyundai-i20_651

The new 2015 Hyundai i20 is nothing new nowadays as the car has been in the news for weeks but despite all the information online the car has not been described in detail. Well, this is something that we will do now thanks to abundance of information that comes straight from Hyundai.

As shown before the new vehicle will come with numerous improvements and new features that are designed to make your life on the road more pleasurable and safer. The i20 delivers on all fronts when it comes to the car. Thus you can expect to find a sophisticated design, elegant lines and refined details, more internal space that makes the car a true five-seater, unique in-segment features and much more. Designed and developed in Europe, the new i20 tries to meet the demands and needs of European customers who are interested in class-leading interior space, high-technology, comfort-enhancing features and clean and refined design.

The new car is longer, lower and wider than the previous model thanks to the inspiration received from the company’s Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy. The wheelbase is extended by 45 millimeters to 2570 mm, which means there is more space for the occupants inside. The class-leading interior space of 1892 mm combined front and rear legroom makes the new i20 a true five-seater car, while the outstanding boot capacity of 326 liters heightens the vehicle’s versatility.

The vehicle has also been fitted with a number of new technologies that provide levels of comfort and convenience normally associated with large-vehicle segments. For example, the inclusion of front and rear parking assist, heated steering wheel, static bending headlamps and automatic defog system are firsts for a Hyundai B-segment vehicle. Additionally, the lane departure warning system is another innovative feature, normally found in higher segments. The unique-in-class panoramic sunroof, able to both tilt and fully open, enhances the comfort and the sense of space for occupants, filling the cabin with natural light and fresh air. The extensive use of lightweight high-strength steel in the platform and bodyshell has yielded a reduction in the core weight of the vehicle, as well as a significant improvement in torsional rigidity, reducing vibrations when on the move and aiding handling performance. The car looks great on the outside – it features nine exterior colors to choose from that include two solid (Baby Elephant and Polar White), four metallic (Mandarine Orange, Iced Coffee, Sleek Silver and Star Dust) and three pearl (Aqua Sparkling, Phantom Black and Red Passion) colors. Inside customers can choose among four colors: Comfort Grey, Elegant Beige, Cappuccino and Blue Grey, while the leather seats are black, featuring distinctive color stitching.

As to the engines provided the new 2015 i20 features a choice between two Hyundai “Kappa” gasoline engines and two “U-II” diesel units. The gasoline engines feature displacement of 1.25 liters and 1.4 liters with the first engine being available in two models. Thus you can get a 1.25-liter low power unit that delivers 75 HP (55 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 122 Nm (90 lb-ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm and a high-powered 1.25-liter engine that gives out 84 HP (62 kW) at 6,000 rpm and the same 122 Nm (90 lb-ft) at 4,000 rpm. The 1.4-liter unit is the most powerful of all i20 gasoline engines – it has 100 HP (74 kW) under the hood at 6,000 rpm and 134 Nm (99 lb-ft) of torque at 3,500 rpm. The outstanding features of the Kappa engine’s modern architecture include dual overhead camshaft (DOHC), dual continuously variable valve timing (CVVT), a very stiff cast aluminum block with cast iron liners, aluminum cylinder head, lighter connecting rods and maintenance-free long-life timing chain.

The diesel family of engines includes two units – a 1.1-liter powerhouse that has 75 HP (55 kW) at 4,000 rpm and 180 Nm (133 lb-ft) of torque at 1,750-2,500 rpm and a 1.4-liter unit that delivers 90 HP (66 kW) at 4,000 rpm and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque at 1,500-2,500 rpm. There’s also a choice between five-speed and six-speed manual transmissions and a four-speed automatic transmission.

The new car delivers a lot when it comes to safety too. Occupant and pedestrian safety are a key priority for Hyundai and this is why the car comes with numerous active and passive safety systems. There are six airbags in the car that sit up front, to the side and in the curtains. The stronger body shell and chassis of the car means there will be fewer injuries in case of an accident. In addition to that the vehicle comes with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), which work in combination to reduce wheel spin or loss of vehicle control on low-friction road surfaces. The ESC has been carefully tuned to be as unobtrusive as possible during driving, creating a natural and comfortable driving experience. The implemented Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) system, which activates the hazard warning lights if a driver suddenly brakes heavily, warns drivers of following vehicles of the car’s rapid deceleration. Finally there’s a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) that alerts drivers if they are veering off course without signaling their intention to change lane during motorway driving.

The new 2015 Hyundai i20 will be 100 per cent built in the company’s plant in Turkey. The plant has a capacity for 200,000 cars per year so market demand, at least in Europe, should be easily met.

  • The Dodge Viper, Then and Now

In February 1998, Chrysler Chairman Bob Lutz asked Tom Gale, Chrysler Chief Design Engineer, to make a mockup of “a modern day Cobra performance car”. Gale with years of experience at Chrysler went to work. Later that year, the fleshed out design was presented to Lutz who immediate asked that it go forward as a working concept car. Metalcrafters in Fountain Valley, CA was chosen to product the sheet metal and chassis was Chrysler-based. The car was presented at the 1989 North American International Auto Show and public reaction was so enthusiastic that Chief Engineer Roy Sjoberg was directed to immediately develop it as a production vehicle.

Sjoberg selected 85 engineers to be on “Team Viper,” with development beginning in March 1989. The team asked the then-Chrysler subsidiary Lamborghini to cast a prototype aluminum block based on Dodge‘s V10 truck engine for sports car use in May. The production body was completed in the fall, with a chassis prototype running in December. Though a V8 engine was first used in the first test vehicle, the V10, which the production car was meant to use, was ready in February 1990. Official approval for the car came in May 1990 from Chrysler chairman Lee Iacocca. One year later, Carroll Shelby piloted a pre-production car as the pace vehicle in the Indianapolis 500 race. In November 1991, the car was released to reviewers with first retail shipments beginning in January 1992.

Since 1992, the Dodge Viper has had four long generations lasting until 2010. There were actually no 2010 models, only extended 2009 models, and 2011 saw zero production Vipers at all. In 2012, the Viper returned under the SRT brand and arrived with a redesigned body and a slightly larger engine. Enlarged to displace 8.4 liters, the V-10 powerplant delivered 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, a figure that remained unchanged until 2014.

Heading into 2015, the SRT and Dodge brands have again become one, allowing the Dodge Viper SRT to return. Aside from switching the SRT badge with a Dodge logo, exterior changes for the 2015 model year are mostly about vibrant new colors and new special-edition packages. A GT model that slots between the entry-level Viper and the Viper GTS is also available, but this new model stands out from the regular “snake” by means of chassis settings and interior features.

Modifications are a bit more obvious on the Viper TA 2.0, which is basically an evolution of last year’s track-prepped, Time Attack model. The updated track-capable model comes with a new aerodynamic package, which includes new front dive planes, carbon-fiber front corner splitters, and a revised, larger rear wing. The latter brings significant improvements in terms of downforce, increasing the 2014 model’s 278 pounds at 150 mph to 400 pounds at the same speed. Also brand-new is the Yorange exterior finish – described as “a vibrant mix of bright orange and yellow tones” – which joins the familiar Competition Blue and Venom Black.

Moving over to the GTS model, Dodge is now offering a Ceramic Blue Edition Package. The bundle adds an exclusive Ceramic Blue paint color with black stripes and set of five-spoke Rattler wheels finished in Black Vapor Chrome. The package is rounded off by a GTS sill badge, a Satin Black exhaust bezel, orange brake calipers, and carbon-fiber brake ducts and rear applique. Lastly, both the GT and the GTS models can be ordered in Stryker Purple, an all-new “liquid mercury” color for the 2015 model year. The exterior stripe color packages have been enhanced as well, and now include Adrenaline Red.

  • Nissan’s Forward Emergency Braking Technology

Nissan’s new Forward Emergency Braking technology works like Bats do. Consider that bats fly in the pitch black but rarely, if ever, hit anything. And some types of bats can catch insects while flying in the dark. To do this, bats they emit very high frequency sounds and use sonar, analyzing how the signals bounce off other objects, to give them an accurate grasp on distances and locations. All of this in the pitch dark.

The latest technology in Nissans uses similar techniques to analyze certain environments and situations. Unfortunately humans do not have sonar so they must use their eyes and ears to check his surroundings. At times this may not be enough to prevent collisions and accidents. Too bad cars aren’t like bats.

Well, now they can be, sort of. Engineers at Nissan have developed a technology called Forward Emergency Braking. The way it works is that in some situations, the technology calculates whether there is a risk of a collision with an object detected in front of the vehicle and then responds.

This is how it works. The Forward Emergency Braking system constantly monitors the distance between the vehicle and the one in front of it. This means that if for some reason the distance to the other car suddenly decreases, the system will determine that there is a risk of collision and will sound an audible alert. At this stage, the driver needs to notice this warning and then take action to avoid a collision.

But if this doesn’t happen and the system judges that the car is still in danger of colliding with something, it will automatically engage the brakes, helping avoid a collision. If a collision is unavoidable, the speed of the vehicle will have been decreased helping to mitigate damage caused by the collision.

The Forward Emergency Braking system is just one of the many technologies available to help drivers stay aware of their surroundings. Additionally, there is also Blind Spot Warning (BSW), which can detect another car diagonally behind, an area that may be difficult for a driver to see. There is also Lane Departure Warning (LDW), which alerts a driver when they are about to stray from their lane. There is even technology that can read road signs and warn a driver if they are trying to enter a one-way street traveling the wrong direction.

Think this is advanced, the folks in Nissan Safety Technology Group are working on systems that sense whats going on with a vehicle two cars ahead. How is this possible? When a car is traveling on a highway or a place where multiple cars are moving in a row, the sensor at the front of the car can detect the distance to and also the relative speed of the vehicle two cars ahead. The technology is no longer just watching directly in front; it is now looking even further ahead. For example, if the driver two cars ahead of yours suddenly braked, the technology in the car can detect this and tell the driver so he or she can perform the next appropriate action.

The technology is called Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW). It examines the movement of the car traveling two vehicles ahead and if it determines that the driver should brake, it will alert him or her both visually and by a warning sound. By warning the driver to brake early on, it can help prevent a pileup.

Nissan knows that technology that monitors the surroundings can work to reduce accidents or the damage caused by unavoidable collisions. Just like bats in the dark, the latest car technologies are helping drivers keep an eye on certain vehicle surroundings, helping to reduce potential accidents.

  • The Ill-fated Oldsmobile Diesel

    1978-Oldsmobile-98-THUMB1978-Oldsmobile-98-651

Sometimes automotive companies do silly things and the story of General Motor’s diesel V8 highlights one of the best (worst?). Here’s the story. During the mid-1970s, meeting new federal EPA emissions regulations was causing many issues for car manufacturers and their dealers. The solution, at least to some executives at General Motors, was to rush a series of diesel engines to the marketplace. This is because diesels were not subject to the same emissions requirements as gasoline engines. Besides Mercedes and Peugeot had both been quite successful selling diesel cars in the U.S. so why wouldn’t General Motors be? Though the new GM-designed diesel engines were destined for all the GM car divisions, the design responsibility fell to GM’s Oldsmobile group. Working at a frantic pace, the first Oldsmobile-built diesels hit the dealer lots in 1978, and there were problems. Oh boy, were there problems.

To begin with, Oldsmobile powertrain engineers based the design on the division’s existing 350-cubic-inch V8. It is an urban legend that GM engineers simply slapped new diesel heads on the standard 350 block and did little else. This is not the case by any stretch. The new block was reinforced substantially internally and was built of a sturdier cast-iron alloy; the blocks weren’t really the problem. The trouble came from the cylinder heads and the fuel system. In particular, the cylinder heads. They broke an awful lot resulting in massive problems for GMs dealer network.

To understand the GM diesel debacle it helps to understand a little about diesel technology. Diesel engines operate using a compression-ignition scheme. As gas is compressed, its temperature goes up, and, in the case of a diesel engine, it’s compressed until the diesel fuel in the combustion chamber ignites. This leads to much higher combustion chamber pressures than are present in a gasoline engine. Once again, much higher combustion chamber pressures than in a gasoline engine. Typically, diesel engines have more and stronger head bolts to compensate for the diesel’s higher cylinder pressure. The Oldsmobile diesel, however, maintained the same 10-bolt pattern and head bolts as gasoline engines so that common production tooling could be used for both the gasoline and diesel engines. This was a big mistake. There were also other issues with the engine: a fuel-pump timing chain that stretched and poor dealer service training, to name a few. And, even in good running order they were just plain loud, and belched quite a bit of smoke; all to provide acceleration that can best be described as modest.

Production of the Oldsmobile diesel lasted from 1978 and 1985 and it caused a class-action lawsuit that saw owners reimbursed for up to 80 percent of the cost of a replacement engine upon failure. The engines were so bad that they spurred legislators in several states to draft early lemon laws. Ultimately, Oldsmobile-built diesels ruined the American consumer’s appetite for diesels for almost 3 decades. Only now are diesels beginning to reenter the U.S. car market in small numbers—and most of those are from non-US manufacturers. This is quite unfortunate because diesel technology is robust, proven and can lead to tremendous fuel economy.
