  • Pristine Jaguar e-type series 1 takes you back to the factory floor

    PRISTINE JAGUAR E-TYPE1

Ahead of the 60th anniversary of the Jaguar E-Type in 2021, E-Type UK is pleased to offer this extremely early Series 1 that perfectly exemplifies the fascinating developments hidden with the first E-type design – Chassis 875407.

Chassis 407 is the 407th left-hand-drive roadster to have rolled off the production line, and the 21st model built after the final outside bonnet locker E-type. Today seen finished in a heritage correct Opalescent Gunmetal over Red interior with French Grey hood, fully restored, this early Series 1 E-Type retains the same beautiful shine that it did when it rolled off the production line in August 1961.

What makes Chassis 407 so desirable is the level of early and original features, which include flat floors, spot welded-in louvers, two-piece door skins, correct double hinges and single drain hole of the boot, the extremely sought after Butlers number plate lights and of course the pumpkin-colored cylinder head. So significant is this E-Type, that it is frequently referred to in the ‘Jaguar E-type Six-Cylinder Originality Guide’ by Dr. Haddock & Dr Mueller, a well-known E-Type bible for true enthusiasts.

From new, it was exported to Jaguar Cars in New York before being sold to an owner in Ohio and is believed to have spent the next 45 years in the Mid-West, including a full restoration by its owner in 1981. Completed with input from Jaguar Cars, including original factory records, the car was returned to as-new condition.

A later trip to Dubai to what was registered to be the third owner in 2015, saw the E-type treated to a full strip-down of the chassis to bring new life to the heritage combination of Opalescent Gunmetal, red interior and French Grey mohair hood.

Whilst maintaining the breathtaking red leather interior – adding originality to the vehicle – the Series 1 also underwent several reliability upgrades, including a new aluminum radiator and power steering, adding a new level of drivability to this stunning vehicle.

Complete with its original 3.8L straight-six – one of the most iconic engines of all time –, this ultimate driving machine combines classic performance with modern upgrades for a truly memorable driving experience.

E-Type UK Founder, Marcus Holland said: “This is a fine example of an early Series 1 E-Type that has been incredibly well maintained by each of its owners. As we enter a very important anniversary year for the E-Type, it’s a real privilege to have Chassis 407 in our showroom. These early E-Types are very nearly the purest translation of the original engineers’ and designers’ vision, and they hold a very important place in automotive history.”

  • Lightweight V8 trio of sought-after Ferrari models now available from bell sport & classic

    BSC Ferrari1

Bell Sport and Classic is excited to welcome three iconic modern Ferrari models to its dealership. Available for sale now from its Hertfordshire showroom are three incredible lightweight and V8-powered examples from Maranello – a 360 Challenge Stradale, a 458 Speciale and a 488 Pista – representing some of the most driver-focused performance cars to come from the iconic Italian brand in recent years.

The first is an extremely desirable and sought after 2003 Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale, one of a limited number of examples supplied new to the UK dealer network in right-hand drive. The car is one of 119 UK examples from a global run of 1,288 units, making it one of the most desirable of the special series, eight-cylinder Ferrari models ever made. Inspired by the 360 Modena Challenge championship, the Challenge Stradale is the track-focused iteration of the 360 Modena, designed with a focus on handling, braking and weight reduction measures. This example is finished in Argento Nurburgring with Nero Leather, having covered only 27,900 miles and supported with a full service history, together with original books, tools, car cover and battery charger.

The 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale offered by Bell Sport & Classic captures the spirit of the 360 Challenge Stradale, taking the standard model into new performance territory. The carbon fibre underbody saves 90kg compared to the original 458, while power comes from a 4.5-litre V8 engine that produces 597bhp at 9,000rpm. Extra weight saving measures include a thinner windscreen and side windows, a Lexan engine cover, lighter ceramic brakes, forged wheels and a minimalistic interior. This example has covered only 3,800 miles from new, finished in Bianco Avus with Nera and Rosso Alcantara seats.

Joining its incredible two lightweight and V8 sister models in the Bell Sport & Classic showroom is a 2019 Ferrari 488 Pista, presented in almost new condition having only covered 290 miles since leaving the Maranello factory. Equipped with the most powerful V8 engine in Ferrari’s history, the 488 Pista benefits from the highest level of technological transfer from the Italian brand’s enviable racing pedigree. The twin-turbo V8 of this 488 Pista produces 711bhp at 8,000rpm and is connected to Ferrari’s latest evolution of the seven-speed, twin-clutch gearbox. This car is finished in Rosso Fiorano with Nero and Bordeaux Alcantara carbon fibre racing seats.

Tim Kearns, Managing Director of Bell Sport and Classic said: “The addition of these three incredible cars to our showroom speaks volumes for Bell Sport & Classic as a leading Ferrari specialist – they really are three of the very best. It’s rare to see any one of these sought after cars on the road, so customers have a genuine chance to own an exclusive part of recent Ferrari history, focused intensely on the performance side of the famous marque.”

Call, make an appointment, optimize, drive off and experience the 1-series driving pleasure for yourself. True to the motto: power, performance & pure fun! With the M135i xDrive «DCL dÄHLer competition line», which has been tuned and optimized as a desirable overall package, you can literally feel the technological harmony and precision and enjoy the sporty, active feeling.

And last but not least: Meanwhile, word has got around that dÄHLer does not only dedicate itself to the respective top model of a series, but also offers an optimization for (almost) every motorization (gasoline or diesel) as well as tested and homologated performance upgrades «powered by dÄHLer». This also applies to the dÄHLer interpretation of the new 1-series.

  • 1929 Chrysler storms to victory in the UK’s first post-lockdown classic car rally

Images from Bespoke Rallies 2020 Highland 1000 event

The husband and wife team of Andrew and Anne Davies drove their splendid 1929 Chrysler 75 Roadster to a convincing overall victory in Bespoke Rallies’ recent and much-anticipated Highland 1000 classic rally.

It was the very first event of its type since the national lockdown, and was achieved before Scotland was again forced to implement major restrictions, and was therefore a unique opportunity for the fun-loving motorsport fraternity to dust off their treasured cars, and briefly once again enjoy the freedom of the open road. The 1000 kilometre rally started and finished in Falkirk, the home of the extraordinary Falkirk Wheel. And, while what could have been a full capacity event was perhaps inevitably affected by COVID-inspired international travel restrictions, the nine teams that were able to participate were blessed with the best of the UK weather at the time, and revelled in clear skies, prolonged sunshine and stunning views of the incomparable West Coast of Scotland.

The event made full use of Bespoke Rallies’ proprietary Virtual Marshal system, which meant no physical officials were required – a major aid during this period of social distancing regulations. Thanks to the system, the rally ran like clockwork, despite having to cope with 60-plus time controls. The sustained series of regularity sections on this most scenic of routes were divided into three legs of c.205 miles a day.

The Mini-Cooper pairing of Edmund Peel and Sarah MacDonald were among those quick to praise the Highland 1000: “It was wonderful to get out and participate in what may be the only such rally to take place until sometime next year. The route was outstanding, with great roads and spectacular scenery, and the Bespoke Rallies team were helpful and friendly, as were the other crews. It was the breath of fresh air we needed!”

  • Flying Spur ready to soar with V8 power

    2021 Bentley Flying Spur V81

The Bentley Flying Spur – hailed as “the best luxury sedan in the world” – is now available with Bentley’s renowned and highly successful V8 powertrain, as an alternative to the iconic W12.

Research from the last ten years shows a significant shift in the usage of the Flying Spur from chauffeur-driven owners to customers driving themselves with passengers accompanying them. Global research (including two customer clinics in America and China) also demonstrated that over 40 per cent of customers travel with rear seat passengers at least once a week. This data has been used to develop the latest iteration of the new four door grand tourer, focusing on the driver experience whilst retaining a cabin space that combines exquisite luxury with integrated latest-generation technology.

The Flying Spur V8 offers a more driver-centric experience via increased agility and a more characterful engine note, whilst benefiting from increased range between fuel stops and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

At the heart of the vehicle is Bentley’s 4.0-litre, twin turbocharged V8 engine, that produces a peak power of 550PS (542bhp, 404kW) and uses twin-scroll turbos to reach its maximum torque of 770Nm at just under 2000 rpm.

To maximise fuel economy, the V8 can shut down four of its eight cylinders under light-load conditions, when torque demand is below 235 Nm and engine speed is below 3000 rpm. The change is imperceptible to the occupants – with deactivation times of around 20 milliseconds (a tenth of the time it takes to blink).

The Flying Spur V8 is 100 kg lighter than the W12 version, making the vehicle feel more agile and responsive with a distinctive personality of its own. The new model includes the latest powertrain and chassis advancements; Adaptive Air Suspension, Torque Vectoring by Brake, Drive Dynamics Control, and Electric Steering, all of which are standard features. Furthermore, customers can add Bentley’s pioneering 48V electric active anti-roll technology (Bentley Dynamic Ride), and Electronic All-Wheel Steering for even greater agility.

The new Flying Spur, available in both four-seat or five-seat configurations, incorporates a class-leading portfolio of intelligent and intuitive equipment and technology tailored to the driver and passengers. The industry-first Bentley Rotating Display is also available on the new Flying Spur V8, including Apple CarPlay®, photorealistic landscapes through satellite maps and advance warning of changing road or traffic conditions via the local hazard information service.

Member of the Board for Engineering, Dr. Matthias Rabe, comments:
“Based on our research, customer feedback and trends of customer usage, the new Flying Spur V8 has been engineered to deliver driver-focused ability, whilst offering passengers the refinement, comfort and technology expected from a grand limousine.

“The Flying Spur range is purposeful yet elegant. It has classic Bentley design, best-in-class execution, authentic materials and attention to detail. The new Flying Spur V8 also includes the latest driver assistance and infotainment systems for enhanced safety, security and relaxation on every journey. “

A modern, highly efficient V8 powertrain
Bentley’s 4.0-litre, twin turbocharged V8 engine produces a peak power of 550PS (542bhp, 404kW) and used twin-scroll turbos to reach its maximum torque of 770Nm at just under 2000 rpm, maintaining this as a flat plateau through to 4500 rpm.

A key feature of the twin-scroll turbochargers is the two separate, parallel flow channels in the turbine housing. The result is high torque available at low speeds. The turbos are located inside the ‘V’ of the engine, minimising the distance the exhaust gases travel from the engine to the turbochargers, promoting rapid response and high–efficiency.

The turbochargers store up boost pressure on light throttle openings, comparable to a dam and reservoir, so boost pressure is instantly available again when the throttle is opened wide, significantly improving throttle response and engine flexibility. To withstand higher stress and bore wear, the cylinder bores are iron coated using an atmospheric plasma spraying process creating a coating that is robust yet just 150 microns thick.

The 90 degree “V” configuration, cross-plane crankshaft and eight perfectly balanced cylinders give the engine its characteristic and unmistakable V8 engine sound and the impressive power output provides a 0-60 mph time of 4.0secs (0-100kph, 4.1 secs) and a top speed of 198 mph (318 kph).

The result is a fuel consumption benefit to the customer of up to 16 per cent, which also means increased range, lower environmental impact and longer driving between fuel stops.

    Driver-focused with increased agility
The Flying Spur V8 is 100 kg lighter than the W12 version, making the vehicle feel more agile and responsive with a distinctive personality of its own.

The new model includes the latest powertrain and chassis advancements; Adaptive Air Suspension, Torque Vectoring by Brake, Drive Dynamics Control, and Electric Steering, all of which are standard features.

The Flying Spur V8 is equipped with front and rear hollow, lightweight anti-roll bars for exceptional handling. Additionally the technically advanced, adaptive chassis can feature Bentley’s pioneering 48-volt electric active ant-roll control system (Bentley Dynamic Ride) and Electronic All-Wheel Steering are available as an option.

The Dynamic Ride system controls ride comfort and lateral roll, cushioning passengers from excessive movement through decoupling of the wheels across the axles, with the ability to then apply up to 1300 Nm of anti-roll torque in 0.3 seconds when cornering to keep the body flat and stable.

The air suspension uses three-chamber air springs, which contain 60 percent more air volume compared to the previous generation Flying Spur. This allows more scope to vary from sporting levels of spring stiffness to luxury limousine ride comfort depending upon which mode the driver has selected.

The optional Electronic All-Wheel Steering is an all new technology feature introduced for the Flying Spur, which enhances both stability at highway speeds and manoeuvrability around town. During low-speed manoeuvres, the system steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels. This has the effect of shortening the wheelbase, reducing the turning circle, increasing agility and making parking noticeably easier.

During high-speed manoeuvres, the system steers the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels, increasing stability and making overtaking and lane-changes more assured. Electronic All-Wheel Steering means no compromise between high-speed confidence and low speed convenience.

A fusion of design, craftsmanship and materials
The bold exterior design of the Flying Spur is based on a new and modern vision that is unmistakably Bentley. With a wheelbase lengthened by 130mm compared to the second generation model, the new Flying Spur now has an increased road presence and stronger, more muscular lines that sweep the full length of the car.

For the Flying Spur V8 there are seven Bentley paint colours to choose from as standard, which have been carefully selected to complement the character and lines of the car. Customers can also specify their vehicle from the additional extended paint range of over 60 colours, including Mulliner and personal commission. The blackline specification offers a contemporary alternative to exterior brightware including a dark version of the optional illuminated electric Flying B, and for a more sporting exterior aesthetic, the new Styling Specification complements the Flying Spur V8’s peerless capabilities.

Standard exterior features of the new V8 model include a 20-inch, 10-spoke painted alloy wheel, a V8 wing badge and quad exhaust pipes, making a visual impact at the rear of the vehicle.

The interior of the all-new Flying Spur V8 showcases Bentley’s expertise in creating a modern cabin of unrivalled luxury and innovation. Stylish and unique, it features supremely comfortable seats in five hide colours, with Bentley’s ‘Wing’ theme across the lower console and fascia. For additional choice, the Colour Specification option adds 10 further hide colours and two duo-tone interior configurations.

Sweeping horizontal veneer flows across the dashboard and into the doors, emphasising the spacious width of the cabin. Crown Cut Walnut is offered as standard, which uses a straight cut process to provide a contemporary finish. There are a further seven veneer species to choose from, plus a High Gloss Carbon Fibre technical finish. Dual veneer finish can also be specified in all veneer types to add an even more bespoke feel to the cabin with Côtes de Genève specifically available for the front centre console.

The industry-first Bentley Rotating Display is also available on the new Flying Spur V8. When the engine start button is pressed, the veneer section in the middle of the dashboard rotates to reveal a 12.3-inch touchscreen, displaying three, customisable digital tiles. The second side of the display reveals three elegant analogue dials showing outside temperature, a compass and a chronometer. A complete digital detox can be selected on the third side, to simply enjoy the seamless wood veneer fascia continuing around the cabin.

In the rear, an all-new Touch Screen Remote is made from beautifully-crafted materials. It integrates almost invisibly into the console but is easily removed at the touch of a button for remote use. It allows access to a wide range of applications, including control of all blinds, rear seat massage function and rear climate control, and can be used to pre-store configurations such as Mood Lighting.

Innovative technology hand in hand with contemporary luxury
The new Flying Spur incorporates a class-leading portfolio of intelligent and intuitive equipment tailored to the driver and passengers. An embedded SIM is provided, meaning My Bentley connected car features no longer require customers to provide their own data connection. My Bentley in-car and remote services is a continually-developing range of services available to customers through a dedicated app, available both on Apple iOS and Android mobile platforms.

Remote services – subject to regional availability – are accessible through the My Bentley app, including a range of features our customers now come to expect – from ‘find my car’ and ‘lock my car’, through to car status and statistics – including integration with other functions such as the park heater where fitted.

Other features via the vehicles infotainment system include Apple CarPlay®, photorealistic landscapes through satellite maps and advance warning of changing road or traffic conditions via the local hazard information service.

Through a range of optional equipment including Rear Seat Entertainment tablets, audio options up to the industry-leading Naim for Bentley system and even the luxury of an onboard two-bottle drinks cooler, the rear cabin of the Flying Spur is the ultimate place to work or relax while on the road.

The new refrigerated bottle cooler can be found between the rear seats behind the centre armrest. With two levels of cooling from +6°C to -6°C and the ability to accommodate six 330ml soft drinks, four 500ml bottles or two full sized (750ml) champagne bottles, the cooler can be stocked to suit any journey. A completely new design means that the cooler is packaged into a much smaller space than the previous generation Flying Spur, meaning less intrusion into the vast 420 litre boot space.

In the rear cabin customers can also specify a four seat configuration benefiting from a long, through-console extending from the front console to the rear. The four-seat configuration makes the ultimate statement in design, comfort and luxury. The console includes a new housing for the 5” touchscreen remote, twin cupholders, extra stowage and the option of a wireless charging point. The rear armrest includes a bright metal finisher and hides two USB ports and a 12v power socket.

Electrically operated picnic tables mounted in the rear of the front seat can be deployed with a single press of a button. The veneer covered table lowers, levels electrically and reveals a leather trimmed surface with a recess for a pen or stylus. Holding the button down the table elegantly returns to its home position.

Desirability of the Flying Spur increases even further
All Flying Spurs are produced at Bentley’s home in Crewe – the world’s first carbon neutral factory for luxury car production. Customer orders are underway, and first customer deliveries are due before the end of 2020 in the UK and Europe, with other global markets following shortly thereafter in 2021.

The world’s best luxury four door grand tourer has now broadened its appeal, offering further driver focus and practicality yet without compromise on luxury or craftsmanship.

  • JMS meets JM Cardesign: Lotus Esprit sports car as a joint project

    2020 Lotus JM

A true mid-engine classic from Great Britain, which has been manufactured over a truly long period of 28 years and continuously developed during this time, is the Lotus Esprit with up to 354 hp. The team from JM Car design from Bergheim near Cologne, in cooperation with JMS Fahrzeugteile, has given a copy of this unforgettable sports car a refinement in the form of a new wheelset.

This presents itself absolutely stylish and contemporary: It is a three-part Kerscher CS rims in a filigree Y-spoke design with silver stars and polished and stepped outer beds. The dimensions are 8×17 inches at the front and an impressive 10×18 inches at the rear, which means that the wheel arches are really perfectly filled. The mounted tires measure 225/25ZR17 and 285/35ZR18.

The implementation of the conversion, which, thanks to a special registration with JM Car design, is of course duly approved for road use, was quite demanding: The rims are specially tailored for this use, for which the brake contour and the available space in the wheel arches were measured in advance.

  • The new Golf GTI Clubsport – world premiere of the 300 PS flagship GTI model

The new Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport

With the world premiere of the new Golf GTI Clubsport, Volkswagen is writing the next chapter of the successful Golf story. The Clubsport has a power output of 221 kW (300 PS) and is the new flagship model of the eighth Golf GTI generation. With its enhanced turbocharged engine, new fully connected running gear, and the brand new Nürburgring driving profile designed for the legendary Nordschleife track in Germany, the Golf GTI Clubsport marks a new milestone for driving dynamics among front-wheel-drive sports cars.

Outstanding driving dynamics. Many of the details in the Golf GTI Clubsport have been enhanced, including the even more agile turbocharged engine (EA888 evo4), which now delivers 221 kW (300 PS) and 400 Nm of torque, and the new sports running gear equipped with a new Vehicle Dynamics Manager. In the new Golf GTI, a new Vehicle Dynamics Manager already closely integrates control of the electronic differential locks (XDS) and the lateral dynamics components of the optional adaptive chassis control DCC. Even at this level, the feature offers noticeable performance benefits. In the new Golf GTI Clubsport, however, the standard electromechanical front-axle locking differential is now included in the Vehicle Dynamics Manager’s network for the first time.

Karsten Schebsdat, Head of Driving Dynamics, Steering and Control Systems at Volkswagen: “Networking all driving dynamics systems means that the new Golf GTI Clubsport handles even more neutrally and precisely than the classic Golf GTI. For the legendary Nordschleife track, we have also programmed a new Nürburgring profile, which specifically adapts the running gear components in the new Golf GTI Clubsport to this race track.”

A genuine Clubsport. It is obvious from the outset that the new Golf GTI Clubsport fits in on the race track, too: its customised front end is very striking. The bumper looks almost open at the bottom – only the radiator grille trim with the honeycomb design typical for GTI models and the larger aerodynamic wings offer resistance to the head wind. At the rear, the two-part roof spoiler catches the eye, which is a unique hallmark feature reserved exclusively for the Golf GTI Clubsport. The front spoiler and rear wing are much more than just design features – they significantly increase the downforce on the sports car. The Golf GTI Clubsport rolls off the production line in Wolfsburg with 18-inch alloy wheels fitted as standard. A special diffuser, a body lowered by 10 millimetres, and wider side sills also enhance the overall sporty impression. Another new feature: oval tailpipes replace the round version in the sports exhaust system, with one tailpipe positioned on the left and right of the body.

Countless GTI-specific features also customise the vehicle interior, including premium sport seats in ArtVelours, which even provide support when cornering at high speed, plus a sports steering wheel with perforated leather grip zones and paddles for the standard 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG). Aluminium-look pedals and other superior details round off the exclusive interior design.

A brief look back. Volkswagen is continuing the tradition of high-performance GTI models with the new Golf GTI Clubsport: the first Golf GTI Clubsport5 was launched in 2016 on the 40th anniversary of the iconic sports car. The original member of the Clubsport series developed 195 kW (265 PS) and temporarily delivered 213 kW (290 PS) using a boost function. This car was followed in the same year by the Golf GTI Clubsport S5 in a limited edition of 400 units with a continuously available output of 228 kW (310 PS). Driving the Golf GTI Clubsport S, pro race driver Benjamin Leuchter set a new lap record for front-wheel-drive vehicles on the Nordschleife at Nürburgring in May 2016. The time: 07:49:21 minutes.

The All-New Arkana SUV will also be available with a 1.3-litre TCe 140 petrol engine utilising 12V mild-hybrid technology, which assists with faster and refined Stop & Start functions, energy recovery and reduced CO2 emissions. Paired with the responsive EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission, the TCe 140 engine produces 140hp and 260Nm of torque from 1,600rpm, offering an engaging driving experience combined with low running costs.

    All-New Captur E-TECH Hybrid
The comprehensive All-New Captur range also continues to expand. Already available with efficient petrol, diesel and E-TECH Plug-in hybrid options, the All-New Captur E-TECH Hybrid now joins the powertrain offering, creating the most comprehensive
line-up of its type, and within the Renault range.

The Captur is Renault’s most popular model in the UK, and as such now offers the widest selection of powertrain options of any model. The E-TECH Hybrid powertrain is shared with the All-New Clio and All-New Arkana models. It features the same 140hp output and intelligent energy management system to optimise fuel efficiency and driving comfort.

In addition to the expanded E-TECH powertrain line-up, All-New Captur models feature efficient TCe turbocharged petrol engines which now benefit from the same 12V mild-hybrid technology found in the All-New Arkana, boosting both engine responses and fuel economy.

At the same time as the introduction of the new electrified powertrains, a new R.S. Line trim level joins the line-up. Following R.S. Line versions of All-New Clio, New Megane and All-New Arkana, the Captur’s style has been enhanced further with a suite of features inspired by Renault’s sportier models.

There are unique exterior elements including redesigned front and rear bumpers featuring an F1-style front blade across the front bumper, along with exclusive alloy wheels. Inside, black headlining, unique upholstery with red stitching and carbon-style trim details distinguish the Captur R.S. Line from the rest of the range.

New Megane Hatch E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid
Renault’s E-TECH Plug-in hybrid powertrain will be introduced to the Megane Hatch line-up to complete the range following its introduction in the New Megane Sport Tourer.

Using a 1.6-litre petrol engine combined with larger 9.9kWh battery and two electric motors, the Megane E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid provides 160hp and the ability to travel up to 30 miles in pure electric mode. Renault models fitted with E-TECH Plug-in hybrid powertrains – like the E-TECH Hybrid engines – start in pure electric mode for silent running and optimum efficiency, with My Sense and Sport modes also available for the powertrain. These are selectable via the EasyLink touchscreen, while running in electric mode can also be selected via a dedicated button on the centre console.

The New Megane Hatch E-TECH Plug-in hybrid benefits from the comprehensive range of enhancements made across the range, with new styling additions to the exterior – including a new R.S. Line model – alongside upgraded interior upholstery and materials.

Technological upgrades include the availability of a new 10-inch TFT Driver Information Display and 9.3-inch portrait EasyLink infotainment screen with enhanced functionality and a host of advanced functions.

  • New 500 wins red dot award 2020’s design concept

    Fiat 5001

The New Fiat 500 has won the Red Dot Award’s Design Concept category. The coveted award was bestowed by an international jury consisting of 21 of the most renowned design professionals and lecturers in the world. Fiat’s new city car received an award for its excellent, unique design and its ability to stand out from its competitors. In 2019, the same award went to the Fiat Centoventi concept.

Olivier François, President of Fiat Brand Global, noted: “Winning the Red Dot Award fills me with pride, because the 500 has always kept pace with time. It changes when social needs change. That is also how it has been for the third generation of the 500, expected as it is to respond to people’s new mobility requirements. Fiat New 500 was conceived, designed and constructed in Italy, with the authenticity of a product lovingly made at home. Since its very outset, the New 500 project has filled all of Fiat with its positivity, bringing energy and creativity with it. That all-Italian creativity, having proven itself able of starting off from 63 years of history and successes, has resulted in an all-new, all-electric, high-tech and connected car, but always 500: stunning, charismatic and with the ability to bring about change, to become an object of desire for zero-emissions mobility in a pure Dolcevita style.”

In the words of Klaus Busse, Head of EMEA FCA Design: “Our aim with the Fiat New 500 was to create an electric car with a soul, whose design strongly features the Italian approach to style and the feeling that can be drawn from the sculptural trend of the New 500, in its ‘eyes’ – the headlights – and in its interior. We wanted to create a unique product, as a statement of the Italian spirit, of how Italy as a nation and Fiat as a brand can create today. Receiving the Red Dot Award is a great honor for the entire team who have worked on the New 500 project.”

The Red Dot Design Awards began in 1955 and over time have become some of most sought-after awards in the world of industrial design. Organized into three broad categories (Product Design, Communication Design and Concept Design), the Red Dot Design Awards are aimed at all companies where a significant focus is given to design. The international jury, consisting of independent designers, lecturers and journalists, evaluate projects according to criteria such as innovation, formal quality, functionality and sustainability. This year, more than 4,100 applications were received from 52 countries, with 187 of those projects receiving an award.

  • Volkswagen scoops the Sunday times ‘car of the year’ and ‘manufacturer of the year’

    VW UP1

The Volkswagen Golf and up! GTI led the charge with category wins at The Sunday Times Motor Awards, with the technology-packed Golf winning ‘Family Car of the Year’ and the plucky, fun-filled up! GTI taking the ‘Value Car of the Year’ title. The Golf’s breadth of appeal and position as the standard-setter for the C-segment were noted and praised by The Sunday Times judges, while the up! GTI’s clear Mk1 Golf GTI DNA was key to the pocket rocket’s success with the panel.

So far ahead of its competitors was the Golf, that it was also crowned overall ‘Car of the Year’, jointly with its Volkswagen Group stablemate, the Porsche Taycan. And last – though certainly not least – the fourth award went to the Volkswagen brand, which was named ‘Manufacturer of the Year’. The publication reserved particular praise for the brand’s range of MEB-based ID. cars, of which the ID.3 has already arrived on UK roads.

Volkswagen’s 2020 is set to continue this momentum, with the imminent arrival of the updated Arteon, new Arteon Shooting Brake and the revised Tiguan. Furthermore, high-performance R variants of the Tiguan and Touareg will arrive in early 2021, shortly followed by the Arteon R, and the ID.4 – the next chapter in the Volkswagen ID. story. The series versions of the ID.3 will also open for order in the coming weeks, making the wider line-up of the ground-breaking electric hatchback available to the motoring public.

The eighth-generation Golf has been praised by experts since its launch earlier this year for its dependable blend of quality, innovation, driving experience and appeal to all. It is a benchmark not only in its segment, but across the automotive industry overall – a true ‘People’s Car’. Alongside this proven recipe, the Golf was the first volume model in Europe to launch with innovative Car2X technology – a system with the potential to revolutionise car safety, providing advance warnings of dangers ahead, facilitated by its ability to pass details on to other Car2X-equipped cars. This way, notice can be passed back through traffic to give warning of an approaching hazard, emergency vehicle, or another unexpected scenario on the road.

Will Dron, Editor of The Sunday Times’ Driving.co.uk, said: “The Golf continues to be the benchmark against which all other family cars are judged. The new model is the perfect blend of forward-thinking and everyday practicality, with a modern but familiar shape and a strikingly high tech, minimalist interior. Its astonishingly wide selection of powertrains will suit every type of driver, too.

“The up! GTI, meanwhile, captures the spirit of the original Golf GTI — a pocket rocket that’s great fun to drive but won’t break the bank. And while Volkswagen is still developing high quality cars that are testament to its esteemed heritage, we also had to recognise the brand for its renewed focus on hybrid and electric models — the ID. range is one to watch and its arrival could mark another significant moment in the history of motoring.”

Andrew Savvas, Managing Director of Volkswagen UK, said: “During a year like 2020, recognition like this is inspiring for all at Volkswagen UK, with our icon – the Golf – awarded with ‘Family Car of the Year’ as well as the overall ‘Car of the Year’ title by The Sunday Times.

“The up! GTI’s success as ‘Value Car of the Year’ is also pleasing, given its status as a through-and-through driver’s car with GTI DNA running through it. It is a great value, brilliantly fun package.

To win the ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ award, though, is something else entirely. This recognises every car we offer, from the up! itself to the Touareg luxury SUV, and includes hot-off-the-press models like the newly-introduced ID.3, the upcoming ID.4, updated Tiguan, and a raft of exciting R models to set pulses racing. It also recognises the level of investment we are making, compared with other car brands, in the field of e-mobility. I am really pleased and proud for Volkswagen to receive this prestigious accolade.”

  • Servcity: a project making autonomous mobility a reality in the UK’s cities

    ServCity Nissan1

ServCity, the UK’s newest autonomous mobility service research project, has launched this month to help cities solve how they can harness the latest autonomous vehicle technologies and successfully incorporate them into a complex urban environment. ServCity is jointly funded by government and industry, the government’s £100m Intelligent Mobility fund is administered by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) and delivered by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK. Over 30 months, five partners – Nissan, the Connected Places Catapult, TRL, Hitachi and the University of Nottingham – will work together to develop a blueprint that directly tackles the barriers to deploying autonomous vehicles in the UK’s cities.

ServCity leverages the experience and expertise acquired though the HumanDrive project. Completed in February this year, this project tackled autonomous driving on country-side and motorway lanes, overcoming challenges such as roundabout and high speed country lanes with no marking, white lines, or kerbs. Completed with a 100% electric Nissan LEAF, it was finalised with Grand Drive, the UK longest and most complex autonomous drive from Cranfield to Sunderland. Data and learning gathered during HumanDrive represents a tremendous help in the completion of the new venture.

Through a combination of test simulation, end-user experience research and real-world trials, ServCity will inform how cities can exploit the potential of future mobility solutions and accelerate their deployment. Concentrating on the three key areas of technology, people and scalability, ServCity aims to ensure the user experience is as intuitive, inclusive and “engaging” as possible.

Business and Industry Minister Nadhim Zahawi said: “If society is to enjoy the benefits of self-driving vehicles, we need to ensure the technology can safely master a complex and lively modern city, with all its obstacles.

This project, backed by Government funding, will not only help make autonomous vehicles more user friendly, but also give users confidence that they can respond quickly and safely and to all types of challenges they face on the roads.”

Bob Bateman (Project Manager) from Nissan explains: “We are extremely proud to be a part of the ServCity project and are excited to trial our 100% electric Nissan LEAF as test vehicles. Our Nissan Intelligent Mobility strategy strives to achieve a mobility future that is more electric, more autonomous and more connected and we look forward to working in collaboration with ServCity’s other partners to achieve this.”

Edward Mayo (Programme Manager) from the Connect Places Catapult said: “The Connected Places Catapult supports organisations in harnessing emerging technologies and developing new services. ServCity is a perfect example of how we can use this approach to deploy autonomous vehicles on a wide scale to achieve the aim of Intelligent Mobility and improve the movement of both people and goods.”

Lucien Linders (General Manager) from TRL adds: “As world leaders in creating the future of transport, TRL is committed to developing safe systems that are available to everyone. Through using the infrastructure and monitoring facilities at our Smart Mobility Living Lab in London, we are uniquely placed to analyse the performance and benefits of automated mobility services in a complex city environment. We are proud to be offering our expertise to this ground-breaking ServCity project.”

Nick Blake (Chief Innovation Strategist) from Hitachi explains: “The team at Hitachi’s European research and development is focused on tackling the complex technical challenges involved in autonomous driving in congested urban environments. Our role in the ServCity project will include developing the technology behind predicting – and safely responding to – other moving objects such as pedestrians, cyclists and cars, as well as delivering accurate and robust localisation solutions.”

Gary Burnett (Chair of Transport Human Factors) from the Human Factors Research Group at the University of Nottingham stated: “Our team brings significant expertise in conducting and analysing user studies to evaluate human-computer interactions. We are excited by our role as part of ServCity to generate theories, models and methods behind the user experience of the vehicle occupants. To this end, we will ensure that the design and development of the autonomous vehicle service is user-centred and truly meets consumer needs.”

Andrew Hart (Director) from SBD Automotive explains: “Robotaxis have the potential to fundamentally transform mobility for both consumers and the cities they operate in. The user experience lies at the heart of that transformation, as operators will need to carefully balance customer expectations with real-world technological constraints. SBD is proud to be a part of the ServCity project, bringing our decades of hands-on experience from working with car makers to help define and test different approaches to delivering a seamless Robotaxi experience.”
