Today, Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of Kia Motors America (KMA) and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG), was joined by local and state representatives for the grand opening ceremony of the new 21.7-acre Kia U.S. corporate campus in Irvine, Calif. The $130-million investment includes the Kia Motors America Corporate Headquarters and state-of-the-art Kia Design Center America (KDCA).

“The investment in our new corporate campus reaffirms our commitment to the United States market and California,” said Ahn. “Our new U.S. Corporate Headquarters and Design Center enables us to develop products specifically for Kia that are designed and tuned for North American consumers.”

Now fully operational, the Irvine campus currently employs approximately 400 permanent full-time employees and has the potential to house approximately 600 employees at full capacity. The corporate headquarters is a custom-built facility that is home to the KMA U.S. sales division, as well as its marketing, public relations, consumer affairs, technical service, research and development, product planning and administration departments. The new facility also houses the KMA western region office and IT services.

“We established our operations in Orange County 15 years ago, and as the company has grown, so has our presence in California,” added Ahn. “This is a special day as we celebrate our permanent home in Irvine and look forward to our continued success in the U.S. market.”

The state-of-the-art, 100,700-square-foot design center was developed with tremendous input from the Kia Motors U.S. design team to ensure an aesthetically pleasing and physically functional layout that encourages creativity. It consists of a design studio, a modeling studio that allows up to eight vehicle models to be worked on simultaneously, a milling shop that features a Zimmerman computerized milling machine, a 2-D presentation room, a color and trim room, a wood/metal shop, a 3-D presentation room that features clearstory windows to allow for viewing indoors under natural light, a paint booth, a private outdoor viewing courtyard, a recreation room, a research library, four conference rooms and a secure, underground garage.

“By establishing the first Kia-exclusive U.S. design center in Irvine, we can take advantage of the tremendous design talent and inspiration provided by the Southern California car culture in a functional environment set up to maximize our designers’ abilities and creativity,” said Tom Kearns, Kia Motors U.S. chief designer. “KDCA will produce stylish, new vehicles that will impact the new design direction for Kia Motors worldwide.”

The Irvine corporate campus was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP in partnership with the City of Irvine to serve as a distinctive architectural gateway to the city and an example of eco-friendly features. The 239,000-square-foot modern glass and steel main structure features a 36,000-square-foot reflecting pool visible to drivers on Interstate 5. Kia was one of the first companies in Irvine to voluntarily install a bioswale system in its parking lot to remove silt and pollution from surface water runoff. The landscaping features drought-resistant plants, and reclaimed water is used for landscaping irrigation and toilets. The exterior glass of the building meets the California Energy Commission’s requirements for energy efficiency standards.

    Hello,

Let me start by saying I was a satisfied customer until my visit with the local Kia Dealer last week. I live in New Hampshire and purchase my 2006 Kia Sportage from Kia of Keene in late 2006 with 4,600 miles on it. I love the vehicle but the other day I noticed the floor mat on the drivers side was soaked. I brought the car into service for the recall on the brake light and they said they would take a look at it. They called me and said it appears to be a drain from the sun roof but the sun roof was put in by someone else so it will not fall under warranty. When I purchased the Sportage the sun roof was in it and the owners manual clearly shows the same controls I have so it looks like it came from Kia to me. They never told me the sun roof would not be covered or that it was an after market install when I purchased the Sportage. I am really disapointed because they refused to fix it unless I paid for it myself. Well it still isn’t fixed. I wrote the dealer ship and they have not answered me. Is there something I can do. I like my vehicle and the quality is good but I guess I will be forced to purchase a different vehicle next time because the service apparently isn’t very reliable. Can you look into this and give me the final no before I have to go somewhere and have this fixed at my expense, which by the way I was laid off from my job two months ago and it pretty tough to make ends meet right now.

Thank you for any help you can give me

  2. Hi Randal. You are in really tough situation, but firstly you have to contact the dealer ship (through phone) and ask them politely to take care about your problem. If it doesn’t work try the hard way, tell them that you wont come back to buy another car from them and you will tell all your friends about the incorrectness of the company. By the way, what is the price the service asked you for repairing the sun roof? I wish you good luck and keep us in touch of what happening.

I purchased a 2004 KIA Sadona mini van. In 2008 I took it in for power steering problems they replaced a pump. Then shortly afterwards it started to make the same noises so i took it back again this time they told me it was some pully. Then in 2010 a year and a half later it started making those same noises so i took it in again and this time they are saying its a power steering rack, but of course now Im am no longer under warrenty and it will cost me 1300.00 to replace hmmmm. I to called the customer service where i was informed the district manager has the finaly say. I should mention to that they did not call me back so afetr 4 days i had to call them the first time and then the second time when they did not call me back i called them the next day when i was told the district manager said they cant help me in anyway as it is no longer under warrenty. Needless to say i will not be purchasing any KIA’s and will strongly reccomend that no one else does to any who ask or bring it up. Oh and by the way i called a local shop who said if the power rack is bad it will only cost a little over 700.00 to fix it! I am very dissapointed and discouraged with KIA !

I recently purchased a kia forte from a used kia dealership. I had my 19 year old daughter with me and was teaching her how to purchase a car. First we found the car we liked spoke to the salesmen he gave us the price. We asked does the price include everything out the door. Yes he replied. When we decided that was the car my daughter wanted we were made to go 5 miles up the road to sign the paperwork. We get up there the paperwork is drawn up and low and behold it was a different price. They said the price did not include tax title and lisc. so after much arguement a very mad husband we still bought the car because my daughter really liked it. Now a week later the dealership calls and says well the bank wont finance the car with the full warranty included. What the heck we signed paperwork was told it was a done deal and now they want to renig again. Please tell me how to explain to my daughter that there are crooks and liars in the kia dealership and now they want us to come back and resign new papers excluding the warranty.
