  • Kia at 2011 SEMA Show

Kia will exhibit several six outrageous sports-themed vehicles in Las Vegas at the 2011 SEMA Show.

This year’s show cars were inspired by Kia’s growing sports marketing portfolio that includes basketball, women’s golf, motor sports and more.  Two were built by the world famous West Coast Customs with additional vehicles conceived and built in-partnership with the popular lifestyle magazine, Antenna, as well as GoGoGear.com and Kia’s U.S. racing partner, Kinetic Motorsports.

“Kia is experiencing unprecedented growth and momentum and we’re bringing our most exciting range of show cars ever to this year’s SEMA Show, including several variations on the stylish all-new 2012 Rio 5-door and the fuel-efficient and technology-laden Optima Hybrid,” commented Michael Sprague, Vice President, Marketing & Communications, Kia Motors America.

“Our involvement in the world of sports has dramatically increased awareness and perception of the Kia brand, and together with some high-profile partners we have created a line-up of fun and eye-catching vehicles with unique back stories and plenty of personality.”, he added.

“Slam Dunk” Blake Griffin Optima Hybrid is created by West Coast Customs (WCC). They have created a basketball-themed Optima Hybrid that adds some hardwood flair to Kia’s first-ever hybrid in the U.S.

“Hole-In-One” Michelle Wie Soul is also built by West Coast Customs. It was inspired by Michelle Wie, Kia’s official golf ambassador and one of the most recognisable young athletes around the world.

“Retro Surf” Rio 5-Door is developed by Kia and Antenna. It features lowered and modified suspension set-up for sportier handling, and the aggressive exterior stance is accentuated by eye-grabbing 17” three-piece gold wheels.

“Hat Trick” Forte 5-Door is created by Antenna. The Hat Trick Forte 5-door can handle it all with a custom hockey stick holder that stretches from the trunk through the center of the vehicle into the cabin.

  • Scion iQ at the 2011 SEMA Show – Tatsu, Evasive, Sibal

Several tuned iQ small city cars will be exhibited at the 2011 SEMA Show, next week in Las Vegas. Three iQ have been created for the show’s Tuner Challenge, with a fourth custom special displaying a radical chop-top look. They are joined at SEMA by further American-market models that have been given ultimate makeovers, plus some of Toyota’s latest State-side racing machinery.

Michael Chang, Jon Sibal and Tatsu are the famous tuners who have worked their magic on iQ. Chang has produced the iQ-RS, giving the car the full motorsport treatment: key elements include a carbon fibre body kit, Air Runner suspension, Sparco race seats and Advan Racing wheels.

Sibal Scion iQ RX comes with a complete body kit including front and rear bumpers and side skirts. The car is finished in a subtle matte metallic grey and bronze pearl paint finish. The engine is slightly modified by adding a Nitrous Express injection kit. The car stands on 18” three-piece forged HRE rims. Again, Air Runner suspension sits the car close to the ground.

Tatsu Scion iQ MR is even more brutal. It comes with RWD and customized bodywork featuring new panels from Speciality Cars and 16” Sakura wheels from Axis are fitted.

Pit Boss Cartel iQ is a racing pits support vehicle. Cartel has removed the roof, reduced the size of the doors and fitted tough metal interior panels and carbon fibre seats and trims.

More radical still, this iQ can be controlled by iPad and serves as a mobile WiFi hotspot and power charging station.

The SEMA show opens at the Las Vegas Convention Center on 1 November.

  • 2012 Kia Optima Hybrid

Kia has a lot of experience producing alternate fuel vehicles. The manufacturer has produced its first electric vehicle (EV) – based on the Besta van – as long ago as 1986, and an electric version of the Sportage in 1999.

At the 2010 Los Angeles International Auto Show, Kia revealed a petrol-electric hybrid version of the new Optima saloon, which is now on sale in both the USA and Korea. It is powered by a a 2.4-litre petrol engine and a 30kW (48 PS) electric motor driving through a hybrid-specific six-speed automatic gearbox.  The combined power is 206PS (151 kW) 263Nm (195 lb-ft) of torque.

Optima Hybrid has lithium-ion polymer battery which is 30% lighter than the nickel-metal hydride systems in rivals, but has a higher energy density. It can accelerate to more than 60mph (96 km/h) on battery power alone.

Kia Optima Hybrid returns up to 44mpg – 6.4 litres per 100 km in city and 47mpg – 6.0 litres per 100 km on the highway. There are no apparent features that differentiate it from the Kia Optima except for a badge, different wheel discs and special Light Platinum Graphite paint color.

Four-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Brake Assist System (BAS) and Hill Assist Control (HAC) are also standard.

2012 Kia Optima Hybrid is priced at $26 500.

  • 2012 Mazda3 – upgraded

2012 Mazda3 will hit the UK market in the beginning of the next year. The Upgraded Mazda3 has more muscular visual appeal with a new front end design, a revised rear bumper and new twist-spoke alloy wheel designs.  Inside, there are new materials and colours, improved ease-of-use for the driver and a quieter cabin for all to enjoy.

Fuel economy across the range is enhanced thanks to the upgraded model’s refined aerodynamics which cut its Cd to just 0.29, and handling is improved, with the upgraded Mazda3 delivering a more consistent and linear driving feel.

New models include two Sport derivatives – 1.6 Sport and Sport Nav Diesel – and new equipment including a gear-shift indicator.

With the Upgraded Mazda3, CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 3.5 percent, depending on model.  Consequently, six diesel models in the 2012 line-up are rated at just 115g/km and seven petrol models are rated at 147g/km, while only the automatic and MPS models exceed 175g/km.

“We anticipate that the Upgraded Mazda3 will enable us to increase sales of our C-segment contender during 2012,” said Peter Allibon, Sales Director, Mazda UK.

“The changes to the Upgraded Mazda3 are subtle but every one makes a difference and enhances the generous specification already available.”, he added.

  • BMW E92 M3 vs tuned BMW E92 335i

Here is a tough dilemma, when you want to buy a sports car and you are sure that this will be 3-series BMW. Whether to buy an expensive E92 M3 with true motorsport spirit or a nice everyday overpowered E92 335i. It is really a very difficult choice.

Firstly, BMW E92 M3 is simply brutal car, which hardly can be compared with anything else. It is powered by a magnificent high-revving S65B40 – 4.0 litre V8 delivering 420PS (309 kW) at 8300RPM and 400Nm (295 lb-ft) at 3900RPM. 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) – electronically limited. Without the limiter, E92 M3 can easily pass 300 km/h (186 mph).  The price is astonishing as the car itself – € 72 900.

The “real deal” in E92 M3 is its spirit. No other BMW build revs, goes and sounds like those came out from Motorsport GmbH. It is simply astonishing with the unique style and stance. You can’t mistake a real M3, when you see it. It is more aggressive with its aerodynamics package, a big bump on the front bonnet and four tail-pipes.

The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a new generation SMG III dual-clutch gearbox, which is even faster than the manual version. Everything in E92 M3 “screams” – SPORT… and nothing else.

On the other hand, we have a nice E92 335i, which is the top-of-range 3-Series (except M3). It comes with N54B30 (International Engine of the Year award in 2007 and 2008) – 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged straight-six with 306PS (225 kW) at 5800RPM and 400Nm (295 lb-ft) between 1300 and 5000RPM. The redline is at 7000RPM, so you have enough time to change gears even with such amount of power.  0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) – electronically limited. Without the limiter, E92 335i can hit 280 km/h (174 mph). Although, it is a lot slower than E92 M3, the twin-turbocharged model has many advantages and the biggest is the tuning potential.

With a simple and cheap DirectFlash N54 ECU software by ESS Performance, the everyday sports car become a real beast with 400PS (294 kW) and 550Nm (407 lb-ft) of torque. The RPM limit is moved to 7200RPM and the top speed governor is removed.

A boosted E92 335i is definitely a better choice for everyday use and especially when it comes to a price and running costs. However, one thing is for sure, when you step inside E92 M3, you’ll feel much better. Heart or brain? It’s up to you!

  • 2012 Ford Fiesta Metal

Ford has announced the new Metal special edition Fiesta, which is in the top 10 of motoring magazine Auto Express’ Performance Cars of the Year 2011. Ford’s supermini ranks seventh amongst 30 finalists, rated higher than entries from Bentley, Porsche, Aston Martin, Maserati and Lotus.

“The Fiesta Metal evokes the spirit of an old-school hot hatch. It’s simple, lightweight and has an engine that doesn’t produce peak power until 6,700rpm. For such an affordable hatch to make such a big impression is a real achievement. Few cars provide as much enjoyment as the Fiesta.”, commented Auto Express motoring writer, Luke Madden.

“Every time we drive the supermini we’re reminded of the magic Ford’s engineers have sprinkled on the chassis. On the road its supple ride, perfectly weighted steering and sharp responses come to the fore.”, he added.

The special edition Fiesta Metal is based on the well-known three-door 120PS Zetec-S model.
