  • The Potential Consequences of Drink Driving

Public education campaigns across the country over the last few decades have made great inroads to reducing the incidence of drink driving, and as a result the road toll due to alcohol has steadily fallen from its peak in the 1970s. However, the message has not reached some people who still get behind the wheel after a drinking session without considering the damage they can cause.

Read on to discover some of the potential consequences of drink driving.

    Dulled senses

As a depressant, alcohol dulls the senses. This leads to slower reaction times and impaired judgement, meaning drivers affected by alcohol react more slowly to potential hazards (if they notice them at all). Alcohol can also affect your judgement, causing inhibitions to diminish and confidence to increase, leading to a belief that you are safe to drive when you are not. This combination can have terrible consequences for drivers, passengers, other road users and pedestrians.

    Loss of licence

Depending on how far over the blood alcohol limit you are, the penalty can range from a short suspension to a full cancellation of your driver’s licence. The impact on people who drive for a living (or where driving is their only option to travel to their place of business) is that they may lose their employment.

    Injury

Incidents caused by drink driving can result in horrific injuries, from broken bones to organ damage, brain damage and permanent paralysis. These injuries can be life threatening, and survivors may take a very long time to recover. Injuries place enormous strain on the families of victims and on an already overburdened health system. Since the driver tends to be the most protected person in a vehicle, it is common for the drink driver to receive less serious injuries than their passengers.

    Death

The most severe consequence of drink driving is death. Frequently, it is not the drink driver who loses his or her life but passengers in their car, occupants of other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. In addition to the grief of victims’ family members and friends, drink driving leading to the death of others may result in serious criminal charges, prison time, family breakdown and a lifelong feeling of deep regret for the damage wreaked upon so many people.

The consequences of drink driving are severe and far reaching. If you are in a situation where there is the slightest chance that you are over the blood alcohol limit, keep your keys in your pocket and find another way to get home. If you have received a penalty notice for drink driving, it is highly recommended that you contact a firm of specialist drink driving lawyers, such as GC Traffic Lawyers, to obtain expert legal advice. Penalties differ according to the severity of the offence. Legal experts will examine your case in detail and advise you on your options according to the local law. In less severe situations, they may be able to help negotiate restricted terms for returning your driving licence in order to retain your job or represent you in court if the case requires it.

  • With The Power Boost to the Abarth 595, Is The 695 Biposto Still the Better Option as a Track Ready Small Fiat?

The Italian tuning company Abarth has been manufacturing insanely powered up versions of what would otherwise be cute little Fiats for decades. The brandnow has the kind of reputation and pedigree that makes the launch of a new Abarth edition something that piques the interest of car enthusiasts. With the launch of the 695 Biposto model came much furore as Abarth themselves billed this vehicle as the world’s first ‘small supercar’.

Reception for the Abarth 695 Biposto

While some drivers and motoring journalists did in fact think the company’s claims that the 695 Biposto classed as a supercar were justified, for the most part it sounded like marketing hubris. However, there is no denying that this is a great vehicle for those who want a small car that can do great things on the track. Slimmed down to the lowest possible weight, this little beast may look like a lovable Fiat city car, but it is designed to be powerful, manoeuvrable, and of course, fast. Some felt that the price, which can approach £50,000 if you get all of the best racing options, was a little crazy for a Fiat. However this car is designed for excitement and competitive edge and it is that, which makes people willing to part with money for it.

    Picture: Abarth 695 Biposto

    The Mid Range Option

The 695 Biposto is the top end edition in terms of Abarth’s models based on the Fiat 500. At the lower end is the Fiat 500 Abarth, which is essentially just a sport version of the regular car and is designed to rival other sports editions like the Mini Cooper S. In the middle is the 595 Competizione and it has just been announced that this is going to be getting a boost in spec and power. The top speed has been boosted to 140 mph and the speed from 0-60 has dropped to 6.7 seconds from 7.4. This makes for a significant difference and with the tougher 1.4 litre Fiat turbocharged engine, it also gets an increase of 20hp to 180hp.

Do You Still Want the Biposto?

The improvements to the specifications of the 595 Competizione do of course come at a price. However, even the predictable price hike for the latest spec still doesn’t put it in the same ‘crazy money’ category as the Biposto, with even the most expensive options costing under £25,000. This makes it a much easier choice to justify to yourself as a sporty car you can take on the track and it is also much better suited to normal road use than the luxury-free Biposto. However, if you really want a car with a lot of power that can provide an extremely exciting, competitive track experience, the Biposto is the best option.

With Abarth producing some great cars over the years, only time will tell what upgrades they have in store for us next.

  • Monaco Grand Prix Preview

The Monaco Grand Prix is always one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the sporting calendar and the 2015 weekend will get underway on the 22nd May. Unlike last year, Ferrari have produced a competitive car but it is still Mercedes who lead the way with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg topping the grid on multiple occasions already this campaign.

As well as the race, we take a look at Formula 1 as a whole and discuss the various issues that the sport has faced over the last year – and how sponsorship may play a key role in the future of motorsports.

Mercedes have been on fire but Ferrari are not far behind

Lewis Hamilton is currently leading the race for the World Championship and is looking to win back-to-back titles for Mercedes. The 30-year-old has been in exceptional form throughout the early part of the year, winning three of the first four races. The world champion is certainly the clear favourite to retain his title, although Ferrari will give the Mercedes driver a run for his money. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen have both produced excellent drives this year and are expected to improve further in the near future.

Formula 1 has gone through a difficult spell in the last 12 months

The sport is struggling to attract new followers, mainly because of the less than competitive nature in the modern era. Sebastian Vettel won four championships in a row for Red Bull before Hamilton won last year – and the Brit looks well placed to secure the crown this year too. Meanwhile, Bernie Ecclestone has been involved in court cases and this has been another unwelcome distraction for Formula 1 fans.

Furthermore, it was recently revealed that the German Grand Prix will not be held this year and therefore, the race calendar will include one less event this season. The sport is struggling to attract sponsors as, traditionally, alcohol and tobacco companies were heavily involved but their influence is limited nowadays.

    Verdict

Ferrari are much improved and on current form, they could test the Mercedes pairing. However, Monaco is traditionally a difficult circuit to overtake on and it will be tricky for Raikkonen and Vettel to overtake either Rosberg or Hamilton. Qualifying will be crucial, but Lewis Hamilton will be confident that he can extend his lead at the top of the Drivers Championship with another victory.

  • So What do You Go For – Speed or Safety?

    2015 Mercedes S Class Coupe

If you ask a hundred people about which car they would buy if they were fortunate enough to have a win on the lottery, the chances are a hundred different replies will then be your reward. This is perfectly understandable, of course, because we are all individuals and we all have our own opinions on what makes the perfect vehicle.

There are plenty of people who will choose a brand new, fresh from the showroom SUV. Tough, robust and dripping with attitude, this choice is perfect for those men and women who want to be seen. Many of these cars represent the pinnacle of car fashion these days, so you can understand why this will prove to be a common pick.

It goes without saying, however, that many others will look for inspiration from the past. Sleek, sexy sports cars from yesteryear will always hold a certain kudos among both aficionados and people with only a passing interest in motors. You can be sure that, once they’ve received their winnings, many will head straight to the showroom.

One of the reasons for choosing a sports car from the past is the association with a certain type of glamor. After all, it’s easy to take a Jaguar E-Type for a spin along a deserted mountain road and imagine you are Steve McQueen or Paul Newman and that you’re on your way to visit Audrey Hepburn at her south of France hotel.

We all love to be fast, but we all need to be safe, too

This brings up an interesting question, however, about our attitude to motoring and our relationship with cars. If you have to choose between speed and safety, do you know for sure which option you will take? Sports cars of the past – and the present, too – have plenty of speed but they aren’t always as safe as we would like them.

Perhaps this is why many drivers choose something a little more dependable. We all hope that we will never feel the need to contact a motoring lawyer in order to make a road injury claim, of course, but if we continue to drive cars that aren’t as safe as others it could happen more often than we would like. That is simply a fact of life.

  • Keeping Your Car’s Fluid Levels Topped Off

    BMW-N54-twin-turbo

Maintaining the proper fluid levels in your car is an easy task. You may prefer that your local dealer or service center perform this for you but knowing how to do it yourself is a good thing too. For those that are in the DIY category, this guide can help you.

We will discuss the following automotive systems involving fluid levels:

    • Engine coolant
    • Engine oil
    • Automatic transmission fluid
    • Window washer fluid
    • Brake fluid
    • Power Steering fluid

Let’s look at them one by one.

Engine Coolant – The engine coolant reservoir is a plastic container under the hood usually just to the side of the radiator. This is where overflow coolant goes when the fluid expands with heat. Pop the coolant lid open and, if its low, fill it about two-thirds of the way full with anti-freeze. Note: Engine coolant is generally diluted 50/50 (50 percent water, 50 percent coolant).

Engine Oil – Checking your oil level is a simple procedure. With the hood open and propped, locate the dipstick. It sometimes has a brightly colored handle. Remove it and wipe it off. Reinsert it into hole, then slowly remove it again. Can you see the oil level down at the bottom of the stick? It should fall between the two hash marks. If it’s below the bottom level, you need to add oil -typically a quart. Be very careful not to overfill it, as this can cause over-pressure in the crankcase which may harm internal seals and gaskets.

Automatic Transmission –Generally, the automatic transmission fluid should be checked with the engine running. See your owner’s manual for more information on this. The transmission dipstick is often located behind the oil dipstick but doesn’t stick up as high. Sometimes it will have the similar colorful markings as the oil dipstick. With the engine running, (be careful!) pull out the transmission dipstick. Wipe it off and reinsert it, then extract it again. It will have high and low marks similar to the oil dipstick. If it’s at the low mark, it’s time to add some transmission fluid.

Window Washing Fluid – The receptacle is typically located in the engine compartment, underneath the windshield but it may be by the side also. It may look like the coolant overflow reservoir so take a good look with a flashlight if needed. If you’re unable to locate these fluid reservoirs, consult your owner’s manual. If the fluid is low, add more!

Brake Fluid – Locate the brake fluid reservoir. It’s usually in the engine compartment by the fire wall or against one fender. If you can’t find it, consult the manual. Remove the lid and check the level. It should be at least two-thirds full. If not, fill to the “full” line with either DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid, check your owner’s manual for recommendations on what level of brake fluid is best.

Power Steering Fluid – The reservoirs for power steering fluid can be in a number of location under the hood. Look carefully and you will see it labelled. It will have a plastic measuring post under the cap that registers the fluid level. Be sure and add only approved power steering fluid if it is low.

Maintaining proper fluid levels helps insure safe and trouble-free driving. It takes only a few minutes, and can often catch a problem before it becomes a crisis. Try and make it a habit to check them periodically.

  • Replacing the Original Carpet in Your Used Car

You got a great deal on a used car but the carpeting has seen better days. If it is heavily stained and/or has holes in it, you’ve really got a couple choices. First, you can buy inexpensive floor mats and just cover the nasty areas with them. This is the quick and easy solution and can work in many situations. Second, you can go first class and install brand new pre-fitted carpeting. This is a great solution because it makes the car almost look new again inside.

Sound expensive? Many people don’t know that you can easy buy preformed carpets for your car and you can install them yourself. Pre-formed carpets are designed to exactly match the originals in your car and they are generally available in the right color and fabric and will be custom molded with all factory pads attached. Pre-formed carpets are typically priced in the $150 to $250 range and are available either from your local dealer, local autoparts store or on-line.

Considering doing it yourself? Here’s a step-by-step guide that will help guide you:

    1)      The new carpet will be shipped rolled up. Before you start, unroll it and let it lie on a flat surface for at least a few hours to let it lose its curl. Placing some books on it to make it lie flat usually helps.

    2)      Next, let’s get the front seats out. Unscrew the four nuts that secure the seats to the floor pan studs. You may also have to remove the seat belt anchor bolts. Disconnect any electrical connectors under each seat also.

    3)      They may be surprising heavy so grab a helper and lift the seats up and out.

    4)      If you have a console in between the two front seats, loosen it or remove it. You may need to consult a factory service manual to see how this is done. (You may also find a Youtube video illustrating the process.)

    5)      Remove the rear seat cushion. These usually come out without much trouble but may require some hardware to be loosened or removed first.

    6)      When everything is free, pull the old carpet out.

    7)      The next step is to transfer the original cutout openings to the new carpet. Using the old carpet as a template, trace the cutouts where the studs went through to the new carpet with chalk. Then cut the cutout openings with a boxcutter. Your new carpet is now ready to go.

    8)      Before the new carpet goes in, vacuum the floor pan and check for rust. Treat rusted areas with a good rust-inhibiting paint and let it dry good.

    9)      When everything is dry, fit the new carpet in and reverse the disassembly procedure.

When finished, enjoy the look and feel of your brand new carpet and buy a set of good set of no-spill coffee mugs!

  • Should You Consider an Electric Vehicle For Your Next Purchase

Electric vehicles have long been on the periphery as a growing technology, and as a sustainable choice for our environment. Yet the lack of knowledge about how they work and function has left possible buyers wary of researching further, when an electric vehicle may mean incredible savings. For the 2015 year, it is obvious that more and more of the largest automobile manufacturers are engineering great electric vehicles that you should totally keep on your radar if you are in the market for a new vehicle.

One of the best selling points for an electric vehicle is the inevitable amount of money you will save in gas fees. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has done the research, and predicted that on average, an electric car costs $3.74 worth of electricity to run for 100 miles. In comparison, a conventional car will cost around $13.36. Though these numbers will vary by your individual needs, the difference of $9.62 which could add up to some serious savings over the course of your ownership.

You could look at that previous factoid and think to yourself, “That’s great, but electric cars cost more, so the savings are nullified.” Not so fast! Electric cars are increasingly becoming more and more affordable, and competitive with their conventional sedan counterparts, so the savings stay. On top of that, the federal government offers a tax credit of up to $7,500, in an effort to encourage drivers to drive electric cars and reduce their emissions. Furthermore, there are additional incentives offered at a local level. With the potential for massive savings, an electric car is not any more expensive than a conventional sedan.

Electric cars also need less maintenance than their fuel-filled counterparts do. Electric vehicles have ten-times fewer moving parts, so essentially they are a much more simple machine. There is no transmission, engine, valves, spark plugs, tailpipe, fuel tank, starter, distributor, catalytic converter, muffler or clutch – so there is less that can possibly go wrong.

Regardless of the potential for incredible financial savings, an electric car is also a responsible choice. The choices you make now will affect your children and grand children, and if you want to begin contributing towards a better environment for them, consider an electric vehicle as your chosen vehicle. Not only will it offer incredible savings over the years that you drive it, it is also an environmentally responsible choice.

  • Importance of Tire Pressure

It is easy to overlook your tires during the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Between getting the kids in the car, buying gas, getting the kids out of the car, and getting yourself to work, it is easy to find yourself doing the bare minimum when it comes to weekly or monthly car maintenance. However, if you find yourself overlooking regular maintenance of your tires, you need to figure out how to set aside a chunk of your day each week to look after your tires and check their pressure.

Tire pressure measures the amount of air within the vehicle’s tires, and is measured in pounds per square inch (psi). To check the pressure, you need to have an electronic tire pressure gauge, which will give you an instant reading as to their psi. Keeping up with your tire pressure is a crucial maintenance task, as the tires are quite possibly the most important aspect of your car to keep you safe. If the tire pressure of your vehicle is off, even by a few pounds, it can affect your ability to brake, as well as the stability of your car and the fuel efficiency during your daily commute. Incorrect pressure can also, in the worst-case scenario, can lead to tire failure which could cause an accident, putting you and your passengers at risk.

Ken Garff Dodge states, “the incorrect psi can affect your vehicle and tires in a number of ways, depending on whether the psi is too high or too low.” A psi that is to high creates less of a grip on the road, and can cause your vehicle to bounce more violently over every bump and leading to a less enjoyable, smooth ride. If your tires are not touching the ground correctly because the psi is too high, the traction of your vehicle lessens, which can create issues with the responsiveness of your brakes. Alternately, if your tire is too low in psi, too much of the tire will be touching the ground, which will lead to an increase in friction. This friction will encourage your tires to heat up, which will consistently wear away at the tread and lead to a tire that does not work correctly.

It is important to check your tire pressure weekly, so that you can consistently keep tabs on the effectiveness of your brakes. If you find yourself consistently having to add air to your tires, you will know that there is something wrong with the tire itself, and can proactively take it to the mechanic and have it fixed. You owe it to yourself and your passengers to consistently check the pressure of your tires, as the outcome can not only affect the enjoyability of your ride, but the safety of you and your passengers.
