  • Toyota reveals GT 86 Blue Edition model

2018 Toyota GT86 Blue EditionToyota reveals GT86 Blue Edition – it is part of the so-called Club Series and focuses on styling and performance. Also, the design team has decided to gear this bad boy with numerous exclusive components and offer some exterior goodies that would be available only for this particular model. So, let’s check it out!

The first notable feature of the new Blue Edition is the color – Electric Blue (you don’t say!) is dominating the whole body, while small black components are painted in glossy black finish – perfect contrasting color, right? Such are the front grille, rear spoiler and diffuser, door mirror housings and front fog light surrounds. On the other hand, driver and passengers will enjoy a cozy and comfortable ride in classy interior with numerous black leather and Alcantara-covered components.

    2018 Toyota GT86 Blue Edition

There is also a special Performance Pack that offers more agile ride, thanks to the introduction of Sachs-tuned suspension fine-tuning, Sachs Performance dampers and Brembo brakes – what is special about these brakes is that they not only contribute to better control and stopping power, but also offer improved pedal feel. And there is neat visual update: the red Brembo calipers and these neat eye-catching 17-inch black alloy wheels. Sweet!

In terms of performance rates, Blue Edition does not disappoint. The vehicle comes with revised chassis with low center of gravity and low-set driving position. And remaining true to its sporty nature, it features a front-mounted power unit – it is a 197hp 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder unit with rear-wheel drive. However, it is up to customers to specify the drivetrain system with either manual or automatic gearbox with six speeds. This whole system offers some pretty good performance rates: the vehicle offers a top speed of 252km/h (234km/h for the automatic gearbox version) and quick 0 to 100km/h sprint, measured at 7.7 seconds and 8.4 seconds for the automatic option.

  • Manga-inspired Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept pays tribute to the mid-80s AE86 Corolla

Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept front and side view

Car from Initial D manga comics is the inspiration for the GT86 concept

If you are into manga, then you have probably heard of the Initial D: cult Japanese comics, where the young hero, Takumi Fujiwara, drove a modified AE86. He honed his driving skills on mountain roads as delivery driver for his father’s tofu shop. As you can expect, the car immediately became a star, influencing the emerging drifting scene and inspiring a live action movie and various arcade games.

What’s even more exciting is that Toyota’s new GT86 project is inspired and based on the world-famous mid-80s AE86 Corolla featured in the series. Well, here’s a hint, since the GT86 was introduced in 2012, it was instantly recognized as the successor to the rear-wheel drive Corolla GT Coupe.

SEE ALSO: Australian engineers pushed Toyota’s Land Cruiser to its limits. Check out what happened!

Now, Toyota is re-emphasizing this link with one-off project called GT86 Initial D concept. Besides the spirit, the car also mimics the livery of the Corolla featured in the comic book. Highlighting the pop-culture roots, the brand has made the fantastic decision to commission manga artist Sonia Leong to design a series of panoramic backdrops that put the real GT86 into comic strip action scenes.

Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept interior

The GT86 Initial D concept’s livery copies manga car’s panda-style monochrome outfit. In addition, it utilizes new versions of the same Japanese market components that were once on the successful original. Precisely, here are featured custom-made RS Watanabe alloy wheels, TRD suspension, a Fujitsubo exhaust system, Cusco strut brace, and a carbon fibre bonnet.

The yellow-tinted fog lights that were a trend back in the 80s haven’t been forgotten. They hint at the Cibié spotlights and the silver-painted engine cover. The latter features underneath high-revving 20-valve ‘Silver Top’ 4A-GE unit.

Modernized a little bit, the car sports carbon fibre door handle protectors and mirror covers. They give a similar effect to the black plastic material used on the AE86. Just like the Initial D car, this one features mud flaps and tinted rear lenses and no boot lid spoiler. Check out the details below for further inspiration.

All in all, this Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept acknowledges how important the AE86 was. Unfortunately, it won’t reach production, but still it will be attending motoring events around Britain throughout the summer. So, if you are lucky (and have the passport) you might end up having a glimpse on it.

  • Toyota Reveals GT86 Shooting Brake Concept

Toyota GT86 Shooting Brake Concept front viewToyota Australia has made a great debut during the weekend, which has slipped somehow through our fingers. We are talking about the global debut of the new Shooting Brake concept version based on the GT86 coupe. Well, it is only in a prototype form, but still has fantastic design.

Although it was conceived and developed in Australia, the car has been hand built in Japan under the direction of Toyota’s global sports car division. Basically, the car adds a new hatchback styling to the rear of the GT86. In addition, concept’s name “Shooting brake” signifies how the design gives the GT86 more rear head room and luggage space.

It seems that Toyota’s design team has decided to expand the appeal of the car, but at the same time has kept the sleek and sporty couple styling of the GT86. Officials say that the model will be suitable for both weekends and track, so this might look like a perfect opportunity for many.

Toyota GT86 Shooting Brake Concept rear view

There are not many details disclosed so far. What we know is the following. The GT86 has a great weight and direct steering, which ensures that the car retains coupe’s involving driving experience. However, it has slightly more neutral feel in tight corners.

The designers also aimed at keeping the as much of the original GT86 as possible. They have only changed what was absolutely necessary to make the car more… practical. Well, the silhouette is still sporty, taut and energetic. By the way, the roof can be used to carry surfboards, bikes or storage pods for a weekend away while the larger opening of the new boot enables much easier loading.

Toyota isn’t planning to produce this vehicle in reality. It is only an internal design study. Nevertheless, Toyota would “never say never” if the demand is really big.

The one-off liveries have been achieved with the help of vinyl wraps, lowered springs, stainless steel exhaust and retro-styled wheels.

As a matter of fact, many of the great characteristics of the GT86 have their roots in the generations of classic performance Toyota sports cars. So, each car is inspired by a different model, which was famous in the racing competitions during the last 50 years.

  • Volkswagen Golf R is the safest car on wet roads

    VW-Golf-R_thumbVW-Golf-R_651

Drivers in the Northern Hemisphere of the world now face winter, which always brings months of road challenges that include fog, ice, snow and rain. Most people will keep on driving even in these conditions so having a safe car for challenging roads is essential if you want to get from point A to point B with no problems at all. This is especially true if you own a performance car too.

Choosing one such car is now a bit easier thanks to the efforts of the British automobile magazine Autocar. According to it, the safest wet road performance car is the Volkswagen Golf R. The result was achieved after extensive testing that included various other models such as the MINI Cooper, Audi RS4, Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, Range Rover Sport, Toyota GT86 and Nissan GT-R. The safety test included five separate challenges at a manufacturer test facility at MIRA Proving Ground. We should also say that the cars tested used tires chosen by the vehicle manufacturer.

All cars underwent tests that included control over stopping from highway speeds of 70 mph (113 km/h), stability when accelerating, braking on ice-like conditions at lower speeds, level of lateral grip when cornering and precision around a circuit.

VW’s four-wheel-drive Golf R, which costs GBP 31,970 and produces 296 bhp (300 HP/220 kW), performed the best across all five tests, with the rear-wheel-drive GBP 24,995, 197 bhp (200 HP/147 kW) Toyota GT86 the worst. Running the VW Golf R close was the GBP 88,400 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S with exception for the Lateral Grip tests where it’s rear-biased weight distribution unsettled its handling.

“Driving conditions can become hugely challenging very quickly for drivers of sportier and higher performance vehicles. It is very easy to get caught out,” explains Chas Hallett, editor-in-chief of Autocar. “Advanced electronics certainly aid the driver, and winter tyres will improve grip, but drivers still need to drive within their limits and abilities, not the cars.”

  • Toyota GT86 sets Guiness World Drift Record – 144.1 km [video]

Harald Müller managed to set a new Guinness World Record for longest vehicle drift in a Toyota GT 86. The previous holder was Johan Schwartz – BMW Performance Center Instructor, who managed to drift the new M5 F10 for 82.520 km (51.278 miles). Harald Müller has achieved whopping 144.126 km (89.55 miles).

The record attempt was made in Samsun, Turkey on July 15th at an event organized by local board of Youth and Sports. The course measured 235.5 meters, where Müller did 612 laps in 2 hours, 25 minutes and 18 seconds with a 2012 Toyota GT 86.

The lightweight RWD car is powered 2.0 liter boxer engine delivering 200HP (147 kW) and 205Nm (152 lb-ft) of torque. It also features a rear spoiler, 17” light alloy wheels, chrome-finished dual exhaust tailpipes and a signature “T”-mesh grille. That T motif is repeated in the shape of the rear fog light, set centrally between the tailpipes.

At the video below you can see, that the GT 86 didn’t go all the time with a proper drift (sideways). Instead, the vehicle was going straight several times and stopped for a turn. We believe that the record should be a continuous drift without any stops or huge corrections. Still, Guinness admits the record, so it is official.

    Enjoy!

  • Cosworth Reveals FA20 Power Package

Cosworth-Toyota-GT86-FA20-Power-Package-THUMBCosworth FA20 Power Package is here. Through its introduction the company deliberately moves on from individual component supply towards fully validated system packages. The current upgrade is suitable on for Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86. Cosworth’s Power Packages will offer motorsport enthusiasts the ease and reliability of power upgrades. The development of FA20 is inspired by Formula One and sports car racing, and the result is a peak performance of up to 380 horsepower (280 kW). There are several stages of the upgrade, each of which builds upon and uses components in the previous Stage.

Stage 1 Power Package offers a power increase of up to 230 hp (170 kW). It features Cosworth free flow sports exhaust, a “Power by Cosworth” calibration kit, an exclusive vehicle badge and a uniquely numbered authentication plaque with the name of the tuning company, performance filtration solution and low temperature thermostat.

All of the components mentioned work together as a solution, rather than a collection of individual parts. They maximize peak performance and reliability. For example, tuning company’s free flow sports exhaust features two 4” diagonally cut, branded, double wall tips and a stylish “Y” shaped back muffler/silencer.

In combination with the other components, this stainless steel exhaust increases the power output to 220 hp (162 kW). By adding the optional combined overpipe front pipe, which has a spherical resonator, the new calibration power output is raised to 225 hp (165 kW). At last, the black manifold header has equal length piping and CNC machined exhaust flanges, not only helps to significantly reduce under hood/bonnet temperatures, but also boosts the output up to 230 hp (170 kW).
