2012 Toyota 86 GTS now will be equipped with new comprehensive aero package, which will reduce the aerodynamic drag and increase the downforce for superior handling stability. At the same time this package is destined to maintain vehicle’s wind-cheating 0.27 drag coefficient.
In details, the aero kit of the Toyota comprises of a new front bumper skirt, side skirts, rear bumper skirt and large rear spoiler. It can be ordered optionally to the high-grade 86 GTS model, both with manual and automatic transmission.
What the front bumper skirt does basically is that it has vertical fins to control air entering the front grille. It also includes dual canards at 12-degree angles which optimize the handling stability.
The side skirt design includes a rounded leading edge to assist airflow evacuation from the front wheel housing.
Next, the rear bumper skirt’s profile is projected horizontally. This makes it able to manage the air turbulence from the front and fin and assist in evacuating under-body airflow.
At last, the large rear spoiler of the 86 GTS, which is painted in gloss black, includes horizontal ‘winglets’ on the uprights. They help create downforce and additionally optimize the handling stability.
2012 Toyota 86 is a sportscar which is much appreciated and awaited and more importantly which now goes on sale. In fact the 86 model is an aim for a grand return to Toyota’s sporting roots. And the brand does this with the world’s only combination of a front-mounted, free-revving, horizontally opposed “boxer” petrol engine and rear-wheel drive!
The car is indeed unique, because it combines a one-of-a-kind powertrain format, compact design, light weight and a low centre of gravity. All this results in the best possible power-to-weight ratio. Of course, this also contributes to a maximum driving pleasure – lively, accessible performance and highly engaging dynamic abilities with minimal electronic intrusion.
2012 Toyota 86 is being offered in two grades – GT and GTS, which are both powered by a 2.0-litre flat-four engine. In addition, Toyota‘s D-4S direct-injection technology enhances the throttle response, power and torque over a wide range of engine speeds.
2012 Toyota 86 GT
In details, the maximum power the vehicle is 147kW – equivalent to 100hp per litre – and peak torque of 205Nm (151 lb-ft). Additionally, fuel economy is absolutely remarkable for a sports car: it is only 7.8 litres/100km for manual variants – and even better for automatic versions at just 7.1 litres/100km. CO2 emissions are 164 grams/km (auto) and 181 grams/km (manual).
Both engines can be mated to a newly developed six-speed manual gearbox, which offers quick, precise shifting through closely stacked ratios. The other option in terms of gear box is the Lexus IS-F-inspired six-speed automatic transmission, with shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel, combines direct response with an extremely fast shifting speed of only 0.2 seconds.
The 86 includes an aerodynamic and stylish body design built around a low, highly compact chassis for optimum handling and performance. The vehicle also comes equipped with wide array of standard equipment: seven airbags, a five-mode stability control system, traction control, anti-skid brakes, 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, air-conditioning, CD sound system, daytime running lamps (DRLs) and a multi-information display.
The 86 GTS runs on 17-inch alloy wheels, and has in its equipment a 6.1-inch display screen, satellite navigation with live traffic updates, auto-levelling HID headlamps, leather-accented front seats, dual-zone climate-control air-conditioning, aluminium pedals, LED DRLs and red stitching highlights.
The unique visual identity of Toyota’s cars is due to the distinct T-mesh pattern in the front grille, door-switch base, instrument panel, meters, triangular rear-centre foglamp and spare-wheel cover. The models in both grades also include numerous exclusive sporting details through both the exterior and interior, including a conrod motif to the HID headlamps, twin exhausts, instrument dials, air vents and gear-lever base.
The 86 piston logo can be see on the car’s front wing and is based on the car’s unique front boxer engine, rear-wheel drive powertrain format. It also is a representation of the vehicle’s tyres sliding in a four-wheel drift, highlighting the perfect on-the-limit balance of the 86.

Toyota GT86, in fact four units of it and one of the Lexus LFA are going to compete in the Nuerburgring 24 Hours from 17th till 20th of May. It is a well known fact that the Nürburgring has played an important role in the development of Toyota’s latest generation of high-performance cars.
Hence, it is the perfect time for the demonstration of the powers of those two exceptional models the Lexus LFA and the GT86. At the disposal of the brand for the racing will be Gazoo Racing team. It will field the LFA (in the SP8 class) and two new race-prepared GT86 (SP3 class).
In the team of course are included technicians and drivers, which will take care for the unique racing vehicles and apply their skills and craftsmanship where needed. Furthermore, they will also gain information and experience which will serve as a means of feedback directly into the work developing future vehicles.
Lexus LFA
Gazoo Racing has already achieved much success by winning the two shorter-distance races at the Nuerburgring. There the Lexus LFA won two times in its class and the GT86 showed promising progress.
In addition to this, the Toyota Swiss Racing Team will also be taking part, fielding two GT86 race-prepared by Toyota Motorsport. Those tow sport cars will take part in the competition class (V3) for production models.
Because of the 86, Toyota now enjoys an ever increasing popularity. Most recently, the Toyota 86 (or Subaru BRZ) has won the title “Car of the Year” on the 2012 Vehicle Dynamics International Awards. A bunch of engineers, technologists and journalists concluded that the 86 is the embodiment of the perfect race car formula. Chief engineer Tetsuya Tada has also been recognized as Dynamicist of the Year alongside his partner Toshio Masuda.
Simplicity is at the “base” of the 86 – literally. A 2.0-liter flat engine at the lower front provides perfect balance and ensures a low center of gravity. At the same time, 200 hp go through the back wheels and that’s it. No excess power, no IT certification needed and no strings attached. Graham Heeps, Vehicle Dynamics International magazine’s Editor puts it even better:
“In the face of rising power outputs and ever-greater levels of complication in the drivetrain, suspension and steering, cars from major manufacturers that take a less-is-more approach and offer fun at legal speeds have been thin on the ground. That’s why we believe the Toyota GT86, and its twin sister the Subaru BRZ, are deserved recipients of the 2012 VDI Car of the Year Award.”
Much praise was also directed at Akio Toyoda, Toyota CEO for steering the company in the right way for the past few years.
Toyota 86 is the new sports car produced by the brand and on which a lot of expectations are put. The car will make its Australian debut in June this year.
However the vehicle will take part in very serious racing a month before its first appearance.
Toyota just announced that not only one but two of the 86 sports cars examples are going to compete in 24 Hours Nuerburgring endurance race. The racing will take place in May.
In details, the racing cars are currently in preparation for the big event. The care for this is provided by Toyota’s partner GAZOO Racing. The goal is to reach and support a new generation of car admirers all over the globe.
In addition, GAZOO Racing team will include a unique feature. In particular it is that it will include Toyota’s in-house employees as drivers and mechanics for the race.
The underlying reason for this participation is the goal of the brand, which is to make advanced vehicles which will satisfy enthusiasts and promote the joy of driving.
The 40th running of the 24 Hours Nrburgring will be held from May 17 to 20.
Finally, Toyota will officially reveal the new GT 86 sports car at the 42nd the Tokyo motor show on November 30. The compact 2+2 model, one of the most keenly awaited new cars of the coming year, will go on sale in the UK in June 2012.
The new GT 86 is an entirely driver-focused, which is designed to deliver maximum pleasure behind the steering wheel. The sports car has instant response to the smallest throttle and steering inputs and the kind of performance that appeals to those for whom driving is a passion, not a necessity.
The GT 86 measures 4 240 mm long, 1 285 mm high and 1775 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2 570mm, dimensions which make it the most compact four-seater sports car available today.
The car is built on a new platform featuring a highly aerodynamic bodyshell stretched tight over the car’s mechanical elements. Both the powertrain and the driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to achieve the best balance: the car has a near-perfect 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution.
2012 Toyota GT 86
2012 Toyota GT 86 is powered by a 2.0 liter four-cylinder boxer engine with equal bore and stroke of 86.0mm. It generates 200PS (147 kW) at 7000RPM and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque at 6600RPM. The engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox. The automatic transmission can be controlled using paddle shifts mounted on the steering wheel.
The power is put on the road through rear wheels via a LSD (limited slip differential) to give the best possible grip in all driving conditions. The ABS and switchable vehicle stability control systems have been tuned specifically to deliver dynamic stability at the limit of the car’s performance envelope with minimal electronic intervention to help preserve the purity of the driving experience.
The suspension features MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbones at the rear. The car rides on 17” wheels and is fitted with ventilated disc brakes fore and aft.
With its staggering look, rear-wheel-drive and the nice naturally aspirated petrol engine, the new GT 86 will turn in one of the best sport coupes on the market.
