  • Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness

Today, Subaru of America introduced the latest member of its Wilderness family, the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness, at the New York International Auto Show. The car combines Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and an updated drivetrain with standard X-MODE, a high 9.3-inch ground clearance, and exclusive body cladding, making it the most robust and trail-ready Crosstrek to date.

In addition to its already impressive standard features, the Crosstrek Wilderness has unique mechanical, design, and functional upgrades that increase its ability to handle off-road conditions. Crucially, the new model maintains the Crosstrek’s well-known blend of SUV capability and a smooth car-like ride and handling. The Crosstrek Wilderness is also outfitted with various interior and exterior details that make it particularly suitable for carrying outdoor equipment, even when wet or muddy.

The Crosstrek Wilderness has a 2.5-liter direct-injection SUBARU BOXER® engine that produces 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. To enhance the car’s off-road performance, Subaru updated the drivetrain by installing a revised differential gear ratio and retuned Lineartronic CVT. The new 4.111 final drive ratio (compared to 3.700) improves the SUV’s ability to climb, and the updated CVT tuning optimizes traction on slippery surfaces and at low speeds. Additionally, the car’s maximum towing capacity has more than doubled to 3,500 lbs. because of the transmission oil cooler addition.

The Wilderness and other 2024 Crosstrek models come with Subaru’s EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, which has won awards. The tech includes Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. The new model also has Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert as standard features.

The Crosstrek Wilderness has Automatic Emergency Steering as a standard feature, which works with EyeSight and Blind-Spot Detection to help with steering control and prevent collisions at speeds under 50 mph. The car also comes with Standard Reverse Automatic Braking, which provides additional safety in narrow trail situations and while parking.

Design + Function = Unique Wilderness Style

The Crosstrek Wilderness design combines style and function to create a rugged appearance that catches attention. To showcase its improved off-road performance, the car has an exclusive look with new front and rear bumpers, a bold hexagonal front grille, larger wheel arch cladding, a metal front skid plate, unique hex-design LED fog lights, and an anti-glare hood decal with a matte-black finish.

The car has Subaru Wilderness badges on the front doors and rear gate. It also has a body-color roof spoiler and black side mirrors with integrated turn signals that complement the SUV’s tough look. The car comes in several colors, including the exclusive Geyser Blue for the Wilderness family.

The Crosstrek Wilderness has a versatile ladder-type roof rack system that can carry up to 176 lbs. dynamically and 700 lbs. statically, making it safe for larger rooftop tents. The roof rail design allows for flexibility in fitting various carrying accessories, including Genuine Subaru Accessories from Subaru retailers.

    Off-Road Capability

The 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness has exclusive suspension components that give it a 9.3-inch ground clearance, which is over half an inch higher than the other Crosstrek models that are already among the highest in their segment. Longer coil springs and shock absorbers provide the added ground clearance while special tuning maintains the car’s dynamic performance.

Longer travel strokes for the front and rear shock absorbers help improve vehicle stability on rough surfaces. The car also has a longer dampening compression stroke that helps absorb shock on rough road surfaces for a smoother ride. Despite the increased ground clearance, the Crosstrek Wilderness still has a low step-in height for easy entry.

The Wilderness model of the 2024 Crosstrek increases approach angle from 18.0 to 20.0 degrees, departure angle from 30.1 to 33.0 degrees, and ramp breakover angle from 19.7 to 21.1 degrees. The SUV also features Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires that are mounted on exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels in matte-black finish and have raised white letters. These tires provide optimal performance in mud, gravel, or snow.

    X-MODE for Maximum Control

Subaru’s driver-selectable dual-function X-MODE comes standard on the Crosstrek Wilderness. The system includes Snow / Dirt and Deep Snow / Mud modes, which optimize the engine output and CVT ratio positions, increase the Active All-Wheel Drive engagement, and enhance the control logic of the Vehicle Dynamics Control with Traction Control System. The X-MODE display also includes a Roll-Angle Indicator to help the driver assess potentially hazardous situations.

When the X-MODE system is turned on, the Crosstrek Wilderness becomes a nimble climber. The Low Speed / Low Ratio Gradient Control senses when the vehicle is moving at low speed on a steep incline and shifts the CVT to its lowest ratio (4.066:1). With the Wilderness model’s lower differential ratios, this system enhances rough off-pavement, low-speed drivability over rocks and other situations that require repeated on/off accelerator usage.

The vehicle also comes with standard Hill Descent Control that will engage individual wheel braking on downgrades when driven under 12 mph with less than 10 percent pressure on the accelerator pedal. This helps control vehicle speed. All 2024 Crosstrek models come with Active Torque Vectoring, which improves handling stability on both road and trail.

An Interior designed for the Outdoors

Subaru designed the Crosstrek Wilderness interior with both comfort and durability in mind. The seats are upholstered in Subaru StarTex®, a water-resistant material featuring the Subaru Wilderness logo embossed in the front headrests. Bold copper colored contrast stitching accents the interior, matching the anodized copper-finish accents on the shifter, gauge meter rings and leather-wrapped steering wheel. The driver is greeted with a Wilderness logo displayed in the meter at start-up.

The black pillar trim, assist grips, overhead console, and headliner are paired with Gunmetal Grey trim on the dash, doors, and shifter plate. All-weather floor mats feature a unique Wilderness design. The cargo area includes a removable, water-resistant tray to protect the load floor from wet and muddy gear. Additionally, an LED light on the rear gate provides better nighttime visibility.

The Crosstrek Wilderness has the SUBARU STARLINK 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system as standard. It features a high-resolution 11.6-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay® and wireless Android Auto™ with full-screen display. Other features include Bluetooth® hands-free phone and audio streaming connectivity, AM/FM stereo, rear vision camera, SiriusXM® All-Access Radio, SiriusXM Travel Link® (4-month free Platinum Plan), HD Radio®, and over-the-air updates.

The multimedia system also doubles as a center information display with on-screen controls for vehicle functions. Additionally, the Wilderness comes with a wireless phone charger located in the center console.

    Competitively Priced Adventure Compact SUV

The Crosstrek Wilderness is priced at $31,995 and includes many standard features. These features consist of Keyless Access with Push-Button Start, SI-Drive engine performance management system, and Tire Pressure Monitoring System with individual tire display. The SUV also has USB-A and USB-C ports, dual-zone automatic climate control, and the All-Weather Package with heated front seats, windshield and exterior mirrors. Additionally, the vehicle has steering responsive LED headlights.

You can add an available option package to the Crosstrek Wilderness for $2,270, which includes a Power Moonroof, 10-way power driver seat with 2-way lumbar support, and a Harman Kardon® 10-speaker system with 432-watt equivalent amplifier.

Also, a new Wide-Angle Mono Camera is added to Touring models. The Outback lineup (except the recently released Wilderness) receives a bolder look thanks to a new front fascia incorporating a more prominent grille; redesigned LED headlights and fog lights; and a more rugged front bumper cover. On the sides, the expanded wheel arch cladding adds to the vehicle’s bolder new look while providing additional protection. The 2023 Outback comes standard with the latest version of EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. These improvements are thanks to a wider field of view, updated control software, and the addition of an electric brake booster.

The top-level Touring trim adds a Wide-Angle Mono Camera that works together with the dual-camera EyeSight system. The additional camera further expands the field of view to recognize pedestrians and bicycles sooner when the vehicle enters an intersection at low speed. EyeSight gives an alert to the driver, and, when necessary, applies brakes to avoid collisions with crossing bicycles and pedestrians.  Also new for Touring is a full LCD Smart Rear-View Mirror with auto-dimming, compass, and Homelink®.

On models equipped with Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, EyeSight includes Automatic Emergency Steering. The new feature works in conjunction with the Pre-Collision Braking System to help avoid a collision at speeds less than 50 mph.

    PERFORMANCE AND CAPABILITY

The 2023 Outback delivers the optimal blend of SUV capability and car-like ride and handling with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Active Torque Vectoring, Vehicle Dynamics Control and X-MODE with Hill Descent Control. The 8.7 inches of ground clearance (9.5 inches for Wilderness) is greater than that of many SUVs, yet the Outback maintains a comfortably low step-in height for both front and rear passenger entry.

Standard on XT models, the 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER engine delivers robust all-around performance with 260 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 277 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. The 2.4-liter turbo delivers an estimated 23/30 mpg city/highway and has a 3,500-lb. towing capacity, the most of any Outback in history. The 2.5-liter achieves up to an estimated 33 mpg and a range of more than 600 miles on a single tank.

    STRUCTURE AND SAFETY

Introduced for 2017, the Subaru Global Platform has been optimized for the Outback, boasting a structure that is 70-percent stiffer in both torsional and front-suspension rigidity.  It is also 100-percent stiffer in both front lateral flexural and rear subframe rigidity compared to the previous Outback’s platform. Crash protection is improved, as the new body absorbs over 40-percent more energy in front/side crashes than the prior model. When a crash is unavoidable, the Outback protects driver and passengers with eight standard airbags, including a driver knee airbag. Subaru expects the 2023 Outback will achieve top safety scores when it is tested later this year, including a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology includes Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, which provides steering assist when the vehicle veers toward the outside of its lane, helping the driver maintain a direct path. The DriverFocus™ Distraction Mitigation System uses a dedicated infrared camera and facial recognition technology to identify signs of driver fatigue or distraction and provides audio and visual warnings to alert the driver and passengers. Additional available driver-assist technologies include Reverse Automatic Braking; and EyeSight Assist Monitor with head-up display.

An available Front View Monitor captures images within the driver’s blind spots in front of the vehicle and displays a 180-degree view on the 11.6-inch display, providing safety and assistance when checking road conditions ahead, parking, and off-roading.

    COMFORT, CONVENIENCE, AND VERSATILITY

All trim levels feature power door locks, windows and side mirrors; Welcome Lighting; Sound Insulation Windshield; and One-Touch Folding Rear Seats. And with a wide rear gate opening, the Outback can comfortably accommodate long items such as camping gear, golf clubs or strollers. For added convenience while loading the vehicle, an available Hands-Free Power Gate allows the owner to open the rear gate by simply waving in front of the Subaru emblem (positioned in the center of the rear gate), and a single-touch lifting cargo cover provides easier access. For additional cargo versatility, the Outback offers standard roof rails with tie-down points and integrated and retractable cross bars. Outback Wilderness retains its stronger roof rails that allow for roof tent capability.

    BOLD DESIGN

The Outback’s exterior emphasizes ruggedness and functionally while evoking a sense of adventure. For 2023, the Outback lineup (except Wilderness) receives a new front fascia that includes an aggressive front bumper cover; larger grille; and redesigned LED headlights and fog lights. • Introducing the 2022 Subaru Forester e-BOXER

    2022 Subaru Forester e-BOXER - Front Angle

Since its debut in 1997, the Forester has been a popular choice among customers, establishing its trust as a safe, fun and reliable package.

Over the last 25 years, the Forester has sold over 357,000 units in Europe, establishing itself as one of the best-sellers in the line-up. Its accumulated global production reach about 4.5 million units.

The latest model Forester presents a refreshed version, offering new safety functions, more capability, new convenience features, and improved driving dynamics.

The 2022MY Forester is safer than ever, equipped with newly advanced safety technologies available as standard on the latest 4th generation EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. The enhanced safety system features a wider field of view, almost doubled, available with 11 safety functions, and among which 3 new functions were added, such as Automatic Emergency Steering, Adaptive Cruise control with Lane Centering, Lane Departure Prevention recognizing also dividing line like grass or road edge.

The Pre-Collision Braking System offers now expanded support for collision avoidance at intersections.

Driver Monitoring System, Subaru’s facial recognition technology that alerts the driver of fatigue or distraction while on the road, as well as automatically adjusting driver settings for seat position, door mirror angles, and air-conditioning preferences, has been enhanced for the 2022MY Forester with a new gesture control function, allowing the driver to raise and lower the set temperature of the automatic climate control system through hand gestures.

It is built on the Subaru Global Platform (SGP) that offers dynamic performance resulting in superior handling and stability, improved hazard avoidance performance, more responsive steering, and exceptionally low vibrations. The improved coil springs and dampers of front and rear suspension provide a more refined ride comfort and more agile handling.

The latest Forester continues the model’s tradition of offering a car-like ride and handling with the capability of an SUV. Standard (permanent) symmetrical full-time all-wheel drive (S-AWD), a trademark of Subaru’s vehicles, provides all-weather confidence and capability, while standard active torque vectoring offers improved handling and cornering performance.

The MY2022 Forester offers a unique combination of S-AWD with the e-BOXER powertrain. This incorporates a direct-injection 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor within the customized Lineartronic transmission, achieving a smoother, 30% more linear, responsive acceleration and a highly responsive torque.

The Subaru e-BOXER system adjusts the power-split ratio between the dedicated 2.0-litre direct-injection (DI) engine and the electric motor to match the driving condition, changing between 3 driving modes: Engine driving, EV driving, and Motor Assist driving. From standstill, or at low speed, the electric motor alone powers the vehicle, for a quiet and zero-emission driving. At medium speeds, power combined both from the motor and the engine give a responsive, linear and fuel-efficient acceleration, while at high-speed the 2.0L Boxer engine powers the vehicle while recharging the battery.

The standard driver-selectable mode (SI-DRIVE), is Subaru’s powertrain performance management system that allows the driver to tailor the vehicle’s throttle characteristics by choosing between “Intelligent” (“I”) and “Sport” (“S”) modes, adds more flexibility for a more convenient and enjoyable drive.

With 220 millimeters of ground clearance, it is well suited for off-road adventures, while the dual function X-MODE (“Snow/Dirt” and ”Deep snow / Mud” modes) is now offering improved functions, suited for a variety of weather and road conditions. A control function has been added that restores X-Mode system, with the ability to automatically re-engage once the vehicle speed drops to 35 km/h or less, enabling drivers to concentrate more on driving without needing to operate the switch again. The Hill Descent Control function that automatically maintains a constant speed when travelling down hills with foot off the pedal, has been improved so that the brake is released when the accelerator is pressed further and the brake is applied immediately after the accelerator is subsequently released, so driver can fully focus on steering while driving downhill.

Keeping its rugged and capable character known as a workhorse, the 2022MY Forester offers a towing capacity of 1,870 kg.

The roomiest, most capable Forester to date, features a high-quality interior, spacious passenger cabin and an expanded cargo compartment with a generous cargo space of 509L (with the back seat up). The luggage volume even increases to 1,779L with the seats down, leading to up to 1.98 metre long loading area.

Upper cargo hooks have been adopted to make use of the height of the Forester’s trunk space, to facilitate safe hanging and holding of luggage.

The latest Forester model debuts a more rugged style based on the “DYNAMIC X SOLID” design philosophy, with a redesigned front fascia, grille, headlights and fog light covers.

New color choices include “Cascade Green Silica”, “Brilliant Bronze Metallic” and “Autumn Green Metallic”.

The 2022MY Forester is available with 8-inch screen navigation featuring the latest infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay*1 and Android AutoTM*2.

2021 Subaru WRX STISubaru Motors USA driver Travis Pastrana managed to set a new record of 5 minutes and 28.67 seconds at Sunday’s 2021 Mt. Washington Hillclimb on the way to the overall victory at the wheel of the Airslayer STI, the monstrous 862-hp Gymkhana 2020 Subaru WRX STI. This new record is better than the previous with a total of 16 seconds, set back in 2017.

New record in the books! said Pastrana after his winning run, This car is the perfect machine to do it. Coming off a second-place finish at Goodwood I really wanted to set a new record here to show what the car could do in the right environment. Luckily we really had good weather this year and I knew if I could get a clean run-in, I’d have a great shot at the 5:44 time. So much fun and I can’t wait to do it again next time!

The Mt. Washington Hillclimb event is held every three years and is one of the most demanding motorsport events in the US and the oldest one in North America. In addition to its history, the tallest mountain on the East Coast usually brings unpredictable weather and mixed-surface road,  which forces drivers to contend with grip levels that shift suddenly and unexpectedly.
