  • Porsche 918 Spyder: Nurburgring Test [video]

Porsche has released a new promotional video of the 918 Spyder, which has lapped the Nordschleife in just 7 minutes and 14 seconds. This is the third video of this performance and obviously the manufacturer is very proud of this achievement of their hybrid sports car.

Talking about hybrid systems, the 918 Spyder is powered by a 4.6 liter V8 engine and two electric motors. The combined power is whopping 770HP (566 kW). This means 0-100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and a top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph).

The car was fitted with street-legal tires and had the optional Weissach Package which will be offered for the production model.

Check out the video below, where you will not see the full lap around Nurburgring, but a lot of interesting highlights and comments.

    Enjoy!

  • Porsche 918 Spyder at the Gran Turismo Events EVO Nurburgring [video]

Porsche 918 Spyder is expected to hit the market in the late 2013. The sports hybrid car was put on serious test during these months including the 2012 Gran Turismo Nürburgring Evo event in Germany.

The production version of 918 Spyder is powered by a 4.6 liter V8 with 570HP (419 kW) and two electric motors – a 109HP (80 kW) on the front axle and a 122HP (90 kW) electric motor on the rear axle. This means a combined power of 770HP (566 kW). 0-100 km/h in 3 seconds and a top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph). This performance comes at decent “price” – 3.0 litres per 100 km (94.1 mpg UK) with CO2 emission of 70 g/km. Furthermore, thanks to a 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery, the model can travel more than 25 km (15.5 miles) on electricity alone at speeds up to 150 km/h (93 mph).

“What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance,” said Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Executive Board Research and Development of Porsche AG.

  • Porsche 918 Spyder Prototype – 770HP

Porsche will actually release the 918 Spyder. The manufacturer has finished the first prototype.

The powertrain includes a 4.6 liter V8 with 570HP (419 kW) and two electric motors – a 109HP (80 kW) on the front axle and a 122HP (90 kW) electric motor on the rear axle.

Porsche is breaking yet more new ground with the technology demonstrator with spectacular solutions such as the full carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque with unit carrier, fully adaptive aerodynamics, adaptive rear-axle steering and the upward-venting “top pipes” exhaust system. In the process, the 918 Spyder is offering a glimpse of what Porsche Intelligent Performance may be capable of in future.
The 918 Spyder will go into production at the end of September 2013 as planned, with the first customers receiving their vehicles before 2013 is out.

  • Audi R8 GT Spyder

Audi has announced the R8 GT Spyder, just a year after the R8 GT. It will be run in limited edition of just 333 cars. However, all units of the open-top sports car are already sold out.

R8 GT Spyder is powered by the famous 5.2 FSI V10 engine from Gallardo – 560PS (412 kW) and 540Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque. 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 317 km/h (197 mph). Just staggering results, mainly because of the curb weight of the car – 1640 kg, which means 85 kg less than R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI Quattro.

The R8 GT Spyder comes standard with an automated 6-speed R tronic gearbox with two fully automatic modes. There is a launch control program, too. Nice!

All power is put on the road through permanent all-wheel-drive – Quattro. More of the power is send to the rear wheels, which means less understeering and more fun.

The whole car is lowered with 10 mm and sits on 19” alloy wheels fitted with 235/35 tires at the front and 295/30 at the rear. The large, lightweight carbon-fiber ceramic brake discs decelerate the car with supreme ease. The ESP stabilization program has a sport mode and can also be deactivated entirely.

The soft-top roof deploys or retracts in 19 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h (31 mph).

2011 Audi R8 GT Spyder is priced at €207 800.

  • 1973 Porsche 917-30 Spyder

Rule changes for the World Championship of Makes eliminated the stunning Porsche 917 during the early 1970s allowing the factory to develop the car for the open-top Canadian-American (CanAm) Championship in North America. Teams from McLaren, Lola and Chaparral were attracted to the 200 mile Sprint races of the formula and the rule book permitted almost anything, including free engine displacement and the use of turbochargers. Porsche used its new-found skills with forced induction to attach two exhaust-driven turbochargers to the flat-twelve engine of the 917.  The result had a displacement of 5.4 litres and produced at least 1,100 bhp, making it one of the most powerful racing cars ever built.
