  • Chevrolet talks about new Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed transmission

Hydra-Matic-8L90_thumbHydra-Matic-8L90_651The new 2015 Chevrolet Silverado has many features to boast with but Chevrolet is very proud to present the GM-developed Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed transmission that is implemented in the vehicle. Indeed, this is a technological masterpiece and deserves some attention because apart from the engine, the transmission is the most important car feature that defines a vehicle.

The new Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed transmission is connected to a powerful 6.2-liter EcoTec V8 engine that is housed in the new 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and provides 11 per cent more torque than GM’s 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission. This along with the 6.2-liter EcoTec V8 engine that gives off 420 horsepower (309 kW) and 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) of torque is a combination that will satisfy everyone’s thirst for power.

“The new 8L90 eight-speed is designed tougher to handle the greater power of the Silverado’s powertrains, with great improvements in spin loss to complement that capability with greater efficiency,” said Kavoos Kaveh, global chief engineer for eight-speed automatic transmissions. “It is a marvel of packaging efficiency and driving efficiency that has garnered more than two dozen patents for General Motors.”

The Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed transmission features four simple gearsets for optimal efficiency, five clutches (two brake clutches and three rotating ones) and innovative packaging that allows it to fit in the same space as the previous six-speed automatic with a lower weight. A wider 7.0 overall gear ratio spread provides a numerically higher 4.56 first gear ratio, helping drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering. Smaller steps between gears, compared to the 6L80 (see chart below), keep the engine within the sweet spot of the rpm band, making the most of its horsepower and torque to optimize performance and efficiency. They also enable numerically lower rear axle ratios, which reduce engine rpm on the highway for reduced fuel consumption. The gearbox also features a number of friction-reducing technologies, including an all-new synthetic fluid and lower spin losses via a powerflow that uses only two open clutches. A new torque converter design with turbine damper enhances refinement, particularly during low-speed gear changes, for smoother performance when the truck is loaded or pulling a trailer.

Similar to GM’s six-speed automatic design, the eight-speed’s architecture locates the grounding clutches rearward of the middle of the structure, outside the gearsets. However, the grounding clutches are splined to the case, eliminating the center support, which reduces weight. This architecture also features a turbine shaft node that reaches to the outside of the barrel, enabling easy execution of a high-resolution magnetic speed sensor. The turbine shaft itself is very short, keeping oil channel drill lengths to a minimum. The rotating clutches are located near the front of the transmission, with short oil feed channels, supporting very fast shifts.

There are many other features that this revolutionary gearbox comes with such as an industry-first off-axis, chain-driven binary vane-type pump that allows for two pumps in the packaging size of a single, a 60-percent reduction in pump torque at points that represent large portions of the operating duty cycle, compared to the 6L80 six-speed, a new torque converter clutch friction lining and a new control strategy and more.

The new 8L90 is built at GM’s Toledo, Ohio, transmission facility.

  • Chevrolet Silverado Cheyenne Concept Debuts At SEMA Show

Chevrolet-Silverado-Cheyenne-Concept-THUMBChevrolet Silverado Cheyenne Concept vehicle makes a debut today at the popular SEMA Show. This is a performance-oriented version of the new 2014 Silverado, however it combines reduced curb weight with the performance of the new 420-horsepower 6.2L V-8 engine.

In addition, the tuned model also includes lowered ride height, a rear stabilizer bar and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes. These enhancements further highlight model’s high-performance character.

As mentioned, the design philosophy of this concept features lightweight strategy. In particular, the vehicle includes carbon fiber front and rear bumpers, tailgate and inner cargo box. These elements reduce Chevy’s weight with approximately 200 pounds from the 4,503 pounds base curb weight.

The form of the lightweight components was matched with their low-mass function. The carbon fiber front bumper features racing-inspired ground effects styling. There are also carbon body-side ground effects and a carbon fiber tailgate with a spoiler. The hood includes a Camaro Z/28-inspired extractor vent.

Furthermore, in terms of weight saving there have been also added Camaro Z/28 Brembo carbon ceramic brakes. To be more precise, their carbon ceramic-matrix rotors are much lighter than conventional steel rotors. The result is saved un-sprung weight, enhanced driving performance and more immediate and direct handling.

The truck runs on charcoal-painted 19-inch Camaro Z/28 aluminum wheels and high-performance tires that definitely contribute towards its powerful stance on the road. What is more, in the Cheyenne are removed the trailer hitch, spare tire, interior center console and some of the sound-deadening material. The truck also adds lightweight aluminum driveshaft and composite rear leaf springs.

The performance of this Chevrolet is spectacular due to the EcoTec3 6.2L V-8 engine that it is equipped with. It produces 420 horsepower (309 kW) and 623 Nm (460 lb-ft) of torque. A Borla performance exhaust system complements the 6.2L’s output.

The powerful unit is coupled with a production six-speed automatic transmission, which includes hill descent control, as well as fuel-saving electric power steering and StabiliTrak electronic stability control with hill start assist.

The interior of the truck was also given a touch. It includes Recaro sport seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel. As an option, there are available safety features such as lane departure warning, front and rear park assist and a rear-vision camera.

All production Silverado models are made with fully boxed frame which is the foundation for their strength and capability. The main rails and major cross members are made of high-strength steel which delivers rigidity and optimal hauling capability.

  • 2014 Chevrolet Silverado High Country Offers More Luxury

2014-Chevrolet-Silverado-High-Country-THUMB2014 Chevrolet Silverado High Country is the latest addition to brands range of models that expands the premium pickup segment. It will join the LTZ and Z71 models in the Silverado lineup this fall.

Silverado High Country is characterized by a unique chrome grille with horizontal chrome bars, halogen projector headlamps and body-color front and rear bumpers, massive 20-inch chrome wheels with P275/55R20 all-season tires, chrome body side moldings, door handles and mirrors.

On the other hand the interior of the pickup includes an exclusive saddle brown interior. The latter features heated and cooled perforated premium leather front bucket seats with High Country logos on the headrests, Chevrolet MyLink connectivity with an 8-inch touch screen, Bose premium audio and front and rear park assist.

As a matter of fact, High Country is the top model in the Silverado lineup. It delivers higher level of premium features and materials with a rich, Western themed appearance. On the other hand, the vehicle is a true Chevy truck, and this means that it offers great capability and dependability.

Furthermore, the standard engine for the Silverado High Country is the 5.3L EcoTec3 V-8 one. It produces 355 horsepower (250 kW), while the fuel economy is estimated up to 23 mpg highway for all 2WD models.

An optional unit is the all-new 6.2L EcoTec3 V-8 one. Both engines include direct fuel injection, Active Fuel Management and continuously variable valve timing, thus delivering refined power and torque. What is more, both engines seamlessly switch to four-cylinder mode to save fuel during light-load driving.

Other optional features here include a chrome rear bumper with CornerStep, integrated trailer brake controller, sunroof, navigation, and a rear-seat entertainment system and High Country Premium Package. The latter provides heated steering wheel, driver alert package, adjustable pedals and integrated trailer brake controller.
