  • Limited Edition 2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO Finally in U.S.

The less there is of something, the more you want it. That is one of the many unwritten human principles that keep the world going. It could be said that it is applicable to, pretty much, anything. Especially when it comes to cars. It is a known fact that there is a limited amount of GT-R NISMO’s which are made every year. And the number of those that go to U.S. is even more limited.

October 21, 2014 turns out to be rather important for Nissan and even more memorable and significant for Winston-Salem, North Carolina, resident Matt McCulloh who received the first 2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO produced for the U.S. market.

McCulloh points out with extreme excitement that; “This car to me is like a brute-force tool. To me it is so purpose-built that I am going to do a lot of track.” He, then, continues and adds; “I’m going to really use this car as far as track, autocross, a little drag-strip – so, you know, track and getting to spend some time in this great garage that I have here now.”

It is intense, it is aggressive and, obviously, it is really wanted. With its screaming 600-horsepower, it becomes the most powerful and most desirable Nissan GT-R ever made. After all, it is quite an honor to have something that is of a limited edition. It kind of makes you feel more… special and valuable. One of a kind, just like the car. Almost (let’s not forget there are still a few more one-of-a-kinds who have been lucky enough to grab a hold of the limited 2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO).

  • All About Continuously Variable Transmissions

Today we have a new type of transmission to consider and it is called a continuously variable transmission (CVT). A CVT is a type of automatic transmission but it operates very differently than older automatics. CVTs provide more useable power, better fuel economy and smoother driving than traditional automatic transmissions. CVTs have been around for years in motorized applications such as snowmobiles and off-road recreational vehicles, but just started to be used in regular automobiles a decade or so ago.Conventional automatic transmissions use sets of gears inside that provide different ratios or speeds. Control units sense speeds and shift a transmission’s gears automatically to provide the most appropriate ratio for a given driving situation: lowest gears for low speeds, middle gears for acceleration and passing, and higher gears for efficient cruising. This is visually indicated in most vehicles with a selector display (P-R-N-D-L).A CVT replaces the complex gears sets common in standard transmissions with two variable-diameter pulleys, each shaped like a pair of opposing cones, with a metal belt running between them. One pulley is connected to the engine, the other to the drive wheels. The way it works is that during operation the pulleys move in and out such that a drive belt between moves higher on one pulley, lower on the other. You can picture this roughly as the way a 10-speed bike works, by routing the chain over smaller or larger gears to change the gear ratios. The controls for a CVT-based car are the same as an automatic-based car: Two pedals (gas and brake) and a P-R-N-D-L-style shift pattern. When driving a car with a CVT, you won’t hear or feel the transmission shift, though. It simply raises and lowers the engine speed as needed, calling up higher engine speeds (or RPMs) for better acceleration and lower RPMs for better fuel economy while cruising. Many people find that driving a CVT-based automobile is a little disconcerting because of the sound it makes. When you push hard on the accelerator, the engine races a bit as it would with a slipping clutch or a failing automatic transmission. This is normal, the CVT is simply adjusting itself to provide optimal power for acceleration.Engines do not develop constant power at all speeds; they have specific speeds where either torque, horsepower or fuel efficiency are at their optimum levels. Because a CVT can theoretically adjust to any gear ratio, engineers can program it to give maximum performance during all these situations. For example, when power is needed, or maximum fuel-economy is desired, a CVT can adjust to those conditions more accurately than a standard automatic transmission. The CVT’s biggest problem has been user acceptance. Because the CVT allows the engine to rotate at any speed, the noises coming from under the hood can sound odd to ears accustomed to conventional automatic transmissions. The gradual changes in engine note sound like something is “slipping”– signs of trouble with a conventional transmission, but perfectly normal for a CVT. Automakers have gone to great lengths to make the CVT feel more like a conventional transmission.Because early automotive CVTs were limited as to how much horsepower they could handle, there has been some concern about the long-term reliability of the CVT. This has not proven to be a problem, though. Advanced technology has made the CVT quite robust and reliable. Nissan has more than a million CVTs in service around the world and says their long-term reliability is comparable to conventional transmissions. The future of the CVT remains to be seen. In spite of the obvious efficiencies of CVTs, customers can be fickle and may prefer and older technology. We will likely see how CVT transmissions fare over the next few years or so.

  • Nissan ships first all-electric taxis to Barcelona and Madrid

    Nissan-electric-taxi_thumbNissan-electric-taxi_651

The Japanese auto maker Nissan has delivered the first all-electric taxis to the Spanish cities of Madrid and Barcelona. The introduction of the new Nissan electric vehicles means that these two cities will enjoy emission-free and quiet transportation from now on.

The vehicles delivered to Barcelona are e-NV200 units and they are the first step in the execution of an agreement between Nissan, the city of Barcelona and the Barcelona metropolitan area. An interesting fact is that the Nissan e-NV200 van is built in Barcelona as well. The delivery of the first electric taxis to Barcelona has taken place at the Expo-electric Formula-e event, which is one of the most important meetings on sustainable mobility in Europe.

Jean-Pierre Diernaz, Director of Electric Vehicles for Nissan Europe, welcomed the news, commenting: “Declining air quality levels are a top concern across Europe and it’s great to see Madrid and Barcelona taking such positive steps in improving air quality through the incorporation of Nissan’s all-electric cars into their taxi fleets. These taxi bring a huge benefit not only for residents but also for the drivers – thanks to the ultra-low running costs only an electric car can offer. This scheme demonstrates that sustainable transportation is easy and affordable for everyone.”

Madrid has received its first Nissan LEAF taxi, which is the best selling electric vehicle in the world with more than 142 000 units sold globally. The official delivery has taken place at Puerta del Sol in Madrid, where “Zero KM” – the measuring starting point of all Spanish roads – is located. Antonio Berzal Prieto, the first 100% electric taxi driver in Madrid to choose electric technology for his business, declared “When I heard that the Nissan LEAF had been approved as a taxi for the city, I quickly looked into all the options it offered me. In addition to the environmental benefits, the costs of ownership are highly competitive and the car’s performance is excellent.”

  • Nissan to Première new Concept SUV at the Sao Paulo Motor Show

Nissan Concept TeaserWith this teaser image Nissan wants us to prepare for a special première which will happen at the Sao Paulo Motor Show happening in 28th of October in Brazil. From what we can see, the concept car to be shown at the event is clearly an SUV type of vehicle. Judging by the philosophy of the Japanese brand we are not surprised that it didn’t’ released any additional information about the model, so we will have to wait until the official debut.

The car will be an expansion of company’s current design language. Nevertheless, the size of the concept outline in the teaser image shows that Nissan is probably planning something more masculine and aggressive. Take a look at the high roof and waistline as well as the slab-like doors.

From what we can see from the front end, it appears to be muscular, includes a big bonnet and semi-exposed wheel arches that incorporate the boomerang styled headlights. At the front we can also see a V -shaped grill, which includes the standard Nissan badge and bold chrome surrounding.

Two years ago Nissan hosted the global debut of the designed in Brazil Extrem Concept. We doubt that we are to see a vehicle of this size although we expect that Nissan will have retained the same aggressive looking, and probably the three-door-style.

  • Nissan adds more features to 2015 Navara

    2015-Nissan-Navara_thumb2015-Nissan-Navara_651

We all know that Nissan plans to launch the 2015 Navara model – after all the vehicle has been in the news since this past summer but the Japanese auto maker has decided to make a splash – the new vehicle now comes with more features and extras than previously expected.

The latest version of the 2015 Navara pick-up will be launched at the upcoming IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover, Germany (September 25 – October 2) and will have new safety features, new standard equipment, new body colors and an upgraded interior trim. For instance, starting now every model in the 2015 Navara range has 17-inch alloy wheels and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) as standard. Two new body colors are also present – bronze and grey and they both offer enhanced looks and improved quality. Nissan says the overall goal has been to bring enhanced value to the new features and improve customer benefits by up to EUR 800.

The big news is that the new 2015 Nissan Navara now offers a new SE model that comes with a 144 HP (106 kW) version of the 2.5-liter diesel engine used in other Navara modifications. This engine, which was launched for the first time in the fleet-oriented XE version last year, is the perfect compromise between power and efficiency. The 144 HP engine now produces 215 g/km of carbon dioxide, which is 7 g/km improvement over the 190 HP (140 kW) version and needs 8.2 liters of fuel per 100 km (29 US MPG). In addition to that the new SE version offers numerous improvements over the XE model that include automatic air conditioning, a combined CD tuner with Bluetooth connectivity, side airbags, chrome front grille, cruise control with speed limited, driver seat height adjustments and more.

The 2015 Navara has three versions – XE, SE and the top LE – and they all now feature a 190 HP (140 kW) version of the dCi engine, while the most advanced LE version of the same pick-up is available with a more powerful 231 HP (170 kW) 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine along with an advanced Nissan 7-speed automatic transmission. The LE version excels in other areas – it has premium navigation, a reversing camera, roof rails, heated seats, cruise control, privacy glass, rain sensor and electrically folding door mirrors as standard. A special version of the LE also adds eather/alcantara trim, 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome touches and a steel bar at the front for added protection.

No word on pricing as of now.

  • CVTs – The Perfect Transmission?

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission but operates very differently than older fluid-based automatics. CVTs are mechanically-based transmissions and provide more useable power, better fuel economy and smoother driving than traditional automatics. It should be noted that CVTs have been around for years in other motorized applications. Vehicles such as snowmobiles and some off-road recreational vehicles have utilized CVTs for decades. Only just recently has the technology seen mainstream automotive use.

    How they work

Conventional automatic transmissions have sets of gears inside their housings that provide different gear ratios or speeds. Control units sense a vehicle’s speed and other parameters and use that information to shift the transmission’s gears. The user just puts the transmission in the appropriate mode with the gear selector switch (P-R-N-D-L). A CVT uses a similar selector switch but replaces the complex gears sets common in automatic transmissions with two simple variable-diameter pulleys, each shaped like a pair of opposing cones, with a metal belt running between them. The way it works is that during operation the pulleys move in and out such that a drive belt between moves higher on one pulley, lower on the other and this provides a numerical gear reduction. You can picture this roughly as the way a 10-speed bike works, by routing the chain over smaller or larger gears to change the gear ratios. The gearing effect with a CVT is essentially “continuous”, hence the nomenclature.

What they are like to drive

The controls for a CVT-based car are the same as an automatic-based car: Two pedals (gas and brake) and a P-R-N-D-L-style shift pattern. When driving a car with a CVT, you won’t hear or feel the transmission shift, though. It simply raises and lowers the engine speed as needed, calling up higher engine speeds (or RPMs) for better acceleration and lower RPMs for better fuel economy while cruising. Some people find that driving a CVT-based automobile is a little disconcerting because they sound different when being driven.

    Advantages of CVTs

Internal combustion engines do not develop constant power at all speeds; they have specific speeds where either torque, horsepower, or fuel efficiency are at their optimum levels. Because a CVT can theoretically adjust to any gear ratio, engineers can program them to give maximum performance in all these situations.

    Disadvantages of CVTs

The CVT’s biggest problem has been user acceptance. Because the CVT allows the engine to rotate at any speed, the noises coming from under the hood can sound odd to ears accustomed to conventional automatic transmissions. Automakers have gone to great lengths to make the CVT feel more like a conventional transmission. For example, many CVTs are now programmed to simulate the “kick-down” feel of a regular automatic when the pedal is floored.

    Reliability of CVTs

Because early automotive CVTs were limited as to how much horsepower they could handle, there has been some concern about the long-term reliability of the CVT.

Give it a few more years and we should know how user acceptance plays a role in the adoption in CVT technology.
