  • 2013 Land Rover Electric Defender With Premiere In Geneva

2013-Land-Rover-Electric-Defender-THUMB2013 Land Rover Electric Defender is going to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next week. The research vehicle delivers zero emissions but at the same time keeps it’s tough and go-anywhere capability.

The standard diesel engine and gearbox in the 110 Defenders have been replaced in this electric version with a 70kW (94 hp), 330 Nm electric motor twinned with a 300-volt, lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 27 kWh. The latter gives a range of more than 50 miles.

As a matter of fact, when the car is driven in low speed and off-road the battery can last for up to eight hours before recharging. In addition, it can be fully charged by a 7kW fast charger in four hours or a portable 3 kW charger in 10 hours.

Furthermore, the Electric Defender keeps the legendary four-wheel drive system and the differential lock. The electric motor delivers maximum torque from the moment it starts, therefore there’s no need for gear shifting and the transmission comprises a single speed, 2.7:1 reduction gearbox combined with the existing Defender four-wheel drive system.

In addition, another technology included is the modified version of brand’s Terrain Response System. Moreover, the vehicles were developed by Land Rover’s Advanced Engineering Team. As a basis for their construction served the successful Defender-based EV – Leopard 1.

Of course, the vehicle has been tested in extreme and environmentally sensitive conditions. Trials included pulling a 12-tonne ‘road train’ up a 13 percent gradient and wading to a depth of 800 mm.

Other details disclosed around this model ahead of its debut are that the battery weighs 410 kg and is mounted in the front of the Defender in place of the diesel engine. The kerb weight is 100 kg more than a basic Defender 110 and ranges from 2055 kg to 2162 kg.

The most prominent elements in the electric powertrain – such as the battery, inverter and motor – are air-cooled which saves weight and complexity and adds robustness. In addition to this, this Electric Defender includes an optimized regenerative braking which utilizes Hill Descent Control.

Unfortunately, there are no plans for the all-terrain electric Defender to enter production so far. More details around this EV will be disclosed next week at Geneva Motor Show.

  • Land Rover Defender Going Rural With The XTech Special Edition

Land-Rover-Defender-XTech-SE-thumbThe Land Rover Defender has always been a work horse and whoever is trying to steer it into the world of luxury can be proved wrong with this special edition. It’s the Defender Xtech Special Edition – a rugged looking, off-road going rangie But is that really the case?

Don’t be fooled by the grand MTR off-road tires on it’s 16-inch alloy wheels. Nor should you be humbled by the XTech‘s Ford 2.2-liter diesel engine which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. (that engine has actually specifically chosen to comply with Euro V emission regulations). The paint job works to a certain extend but once you step inside, marks of the Special Edition’s squeamishness became widely apparent.

The interior is mostly white leather and there are Land Rover logos everywhere – on the headrests and down on the carpets, embossed or woven. That is not the rugged way. As complementary equipment, you get Air Conditioning, Anti-Lock Brakes with Electronic Traction Control, central locking and heated seats and windscreen. All that for the price of £27,995 ($43,440).

Main point: The Land Rover Defender Xtech, with it’s cool name and it’s black wheel arches and stylized side sills, is not a work horse. It’s a high-speck geek dressed as a commando.

  • Land Rover Defender 2 by Vilner

Vilner has announced a new tuning program for the rough Land Rover Defender 2, which has been transformed from hard off-roader to luxurious ride suitable for everyday driving.

The interior has been entirely reorganized – 4 individual sport seats upholstered in brown and black, using Nappa and Alcantara. There is also leather on the door panels, the dashboard, the grips on the headliner and the sun visor. It is an interesting decision to cover the sun visor in Alcantara, but it looks very nice. The same applies to the rear view mirror and the third brake light.

The shapes on the leather, the new elbow rest and the bottom of the seats reflect an athletic vigor, and the “piano lacquer” subtlety.

The floor is the another interesting highlight. It features wooden decoration, a motive that embellishes the rear arm rest. The speedometer on the dashboard has the same color as the interior.

Vilner also installed a nice multimedia system with power of 600W and 15” LCD screen connected to the DVD-player has been installed. The car cab has been soundproofed, so you can listen at max volume without disturbing anyone on the road.

  • Land Rover Defender Concept 100

Another debut today at the 2012 New Delhi Auto Expo has made the Land Rover’s Defender Concept 100 and Defender Concept 100 Sport. These concepts are an attempt for a possible replacement of the iconic model. Moreover they are intended to showcase the potential breath of capability for the future Defender family, capturing the rugged, dependable and adventurous spirit of the original.

Furthermore Defender Concept 100 represents the essential Defender design cues for the 21st century, but a bit modified ad optimized. Such optimizations and modifications include short overhangs for extreme approach and departure angles, vertical panels, an upright windscreen and strong shoulder line for visibility and ease of positioning and Defenders frontal image with its signature round lamps and prominent grille, incorporating a winch. Improvements have been made with the optimised off-road 20-inch alloy wheels shod with Cooper all-terrain tyres. On the other hand the Defender Concept 100 Sport takes all these key design cues and adds to them the spirit of freedom with their fold-down windscreens.

Land Rover Defender Concept 100 and Defender Concept 100 Sport

The first and foremost highlight here is the next generation of Land Rover’s Terrain Response System which will optimise the car for any conditions without driver’s pre-selection. Moreover a new Terrain-i System shows an intelligent map of the topography in front of the car and displays it as a 3D visualisation. It also automatically identifies potential difficulties on the road and of course suggests alternative routes. And while driving in urban environments, the same system identifies pedestrians and hazards with great accuracy. Another innovation is the new Wade Aid System which uses sonar sensors mounted in the bumpers and wing mirrors to measure water depth. Additionally Wade Aid will optimise the car for water crossings by closing body vents, raising the ride height, selecting a low gear and advising on the safest speed.

Land Rover Defender Concept 100 Sport Interior

The Land Rover brand is also concerned about the environment and extends the commitment to develop new technologies which will reduce the environmental impact. First of all there is an intelligent Twin-Solenoid Stop/Start System mated to the latest eight-speed automatic gearbox, both of which have been designed with future hybridisation in mind. Secondly, there is the one-of-a-kind Driveline Disconnect System, which sends power to the front-axle only unless conditions demand all-wheel drive. Hence, this systems physically, rather than electronically, decouples the rear-axle to reduce friction losses but can reengage drive almost instantaneously.
