  • 2015 Subaru Impreza gets new looks and technologies

    2015-Subaru-Impreza_thumb2015-Subaru-Impreza_651

One of the best selling auto brands in the past few months – Subaru – has presented the new 2015 Impreza. The new car comes with a number of improvements that touch all vehicle categories but the most new features can be found in the looks and the technologies used inside the car.

Available as 4-door and 5-door models the new 2015 Impreza now comes with revised front styling with a new front bumper, grille and headlights that give it a closer kinship to the all-new 2015 Legacy. A new exterior mirror enhances aerodynamics, as does a low-profile trunk spoiler on 4-door models. The sedans also feature LEDs (light emitting diodes) for the center high mounted stoplight. Rides have also been made quieter thanks to the usage of additional sound deadening materials and thicker side glass windows with improved sealing. All models now have a standard Rear Vision Camera while the base 2.0i model has standard cruise control and a touch-screen infotainment system. Certain versions of the 2015 Impreza now feature integrated turn signals in the exterior mirrors and more. A major new feature of the 2015 Impreza is that it now joins the Legacy, Outback and Forester lines in offering the brand’s innovative EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning.

On the inside the new 2015 Impreza has a new standard 6.2 infotainment system that is operated via a 6.2-inch multi-function touch screen display and single-touch gesture control. The system includes an AM/FM stereo and HD Radio, a Radio Data Broadcast system, a single-disc in-dash CD player, Subaru STARLINK smartphone integration with Aha Infotainment, Pandora and iHeart Radio, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity and audio streaming, an iPod control capability and an iTunes Tagging capability, a USB port and an aux. input jack, and four speakers. The Impreza 2.0i Premium features the same system, but with six speakers.

The 2015 Subaru Impreza is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder BOXER engine that delivers 148 HP (109 kW) of power at 6200 rpm and 145 lb-ft (197 Nm) of torque at 4200 rpm. The engine features a long-stroke configuration with 84 mm bore and 90 mm stroke for better low and mid-range torque. The camshafts are chain driven, reducing long-term servicing costs. Dual Active Valve Control System (AVCS) variable valve timing optimizes torque performance and emissions. The BOXER engine can be connected to a 5-speed manual or the second generation, lighter and more compact version of the Lineartronic CVT that is now also offered in all 2015 Subaru models except the BRZ sports car. All Impreza models (5-speed and CVT) feature Incline Start Assist, which helps prevent the vehicle from rolling back when moving away from a stop on an incline. In addition to that all Imprezas with the CVT, except the base 2.0i, feature a 6-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters that allow the driver to control the transmission. In the base 2.0 models with the CVT, a driver-selectable Low shift mode can provide additional engine braking when traveling down a grade, to enhance vehicle control.

Thanks to the new engine and the transmissions the new 2015 Impreza offers improved fuel economy of 28 US MPG city (8.4 liters per 100 km), 37 US MPG highway (6.4 liters per 100 km) and 31 US MPG combined (7.6 liters per 100 km) which is great mileage for an all-wheel drive car.

The new car should be at a Subaru dealer near you in November 2014. Pricing is unknown.

  • Certain 2015 Subaru models earn Top Safety Pick+ awards

    2015-Subaru-Legacy_thumb2015-Subaru-Legacy_651

No matter what kind of car you drive on a daily basis, safety remains a top objective because after all the goal of travelling and driving in particular is to get where you want on time and well. This is the reason why many safety technologies get implemented in various cars and they tend to improve on a yearly basis. Still, it is really hard to pick a safe car but thanks to the efforts of the US Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) this task has become a bit easier.

The IIHS has just enriched your choice with the addition of the all-new 2015 Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback, which have been given the 2014 Top Safety Pick+ designation. The new Subaru Legacy has achieved the highest possible rating of “good” in the Institute’s crashworthiness evaluations of front small overlap, front moderate overlap, side impact, roof crush and rear impact. The sedan also received a “superior” rating in the Institute’s front crash avoidance testing. The catch is that in order to have the 2014 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation the 2015 Subaru Legacy must have the optional EyeSight® driver-assist system.

    2015-Subaru-Outback_651

The all-new 2015 Subaru Outback has also achieved the highest possible rating of ‘good’ in the Institute’s crashworthiness evaluations, as well as a “superior” rating in the front crash avoidance testing. Just like in the 2015 Subaru Legacy case, the new 2015 Subaru Outback needs to be equipped with the optional EyeSight® driver-assist system.

Subaru is also proud to announce that seven Subaru models, including the BRZ, Impreza, WRX/STI and XV Crosstrek, have earned 2014 safety awards from IIHS – four with Top Safety Pick and three with Top Safety Pick+ including its Forester, Legacy and Outback models equipped with optional EyeSight®. As Thomas J. Doll, president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc., says “The Institute’s findings reinforce our dedication to building safe vehicles. We are proud of the 2014 Top Safety Pick endorsement for every Subaru vehicle in our line-up.”

  • Revolution Motorstore Subaru Impreza WRX STI – Nurburgring [video]

Revolution Motorstore has created a real monster – Subaru Impreza WRX STI Nurburgring. It managed to complete a lap around Nurburgring in just 7 minutes and 53 seconds. Behind the steering wheel was Tommi Makinen.

The project is based on the JDM-spec STI and is the first unit part of a limited series of 10 cars. The tuner needs four months to build each car, and all of them will come without rear doors. Other highlights include a carbon fiber hood, widened wheel arches, thinner glass and an aluminum boot.

The power is coming from the 2.1-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which received Cosworth’s 2.2 stroker kit and whopping pressure from the bigger turbocharger of 1.9 bar. The result is 508HP (379 kW) and 677Nm (500 lb-ft) of torque.

Other upgrades include a set of 19” OZ Superturismo LM alloy wheels, Tarox 10-pot brake calipers, no ABS, Tein ProFlex coilovers with an EDFC remote control system. There is also a rollcage which has replaced the rear seats, along with Recaro seats and TRS harnesses. Carbon fiber and Alcantara was used to trim the cabin which also has gained a custom dash featuring a built-in tire pressure warning system.

The Revolution STI Nurburgring is priced at – £71,994.

Developed under the theme ‘Redefining Value, Redefining Class’, the newly premiered ride is the fourth generation Impreza since the model’s debut in the distant 1992. For its design process, Subaru shares: „we focused on improving environmental friendliness and adapting to changes in customer’s values.” Thanks to these approach, the all-new Impreza showcases amazing reliability, handling, and safety features, as well as Subaru’s original Symmetrical AWD (All-Wheel Drive) system and high-end Boxer engine linked to a new Lineartronic transmission.

On the inside, the 2012 Subaru Impreza boasts more spacious cabin with improved comfort and quality, but without an overall increase in size. Its bottom end of the A-pillar has been extended 200 mm toward the front and the wheelbase enlarged by 25 mm. According to Subaru, the 4-door model Impreza has enough trunk space to accommodate four golf bags, while the 5-door model is capable to accommodate three golf bags or a large baby stroller.

It benefits improved fuel efficiency and  performance (36 mpg highway and 148 horsepower at 6,200 rpm), yet is mated to a new Lineartronic (CVT) 5-Speed Manual transmission.
