  • Ariel Atom – Primitive Pure Fun

Having fun on four wheels these days is easy, right? Indeed, there is a lot of power out there to play with. However, “with great power comes great responsibility”… is what many car manufacturers have in mind now. That is why today we have speed limiters, brake assist, lane departure warnings, ABS, ESC, TCS, xDrive, and many, many more abbreviations that keep us safe and sound and on the road. Everything is automatized and we as drivers start to feel isolated and neglected. All is rather convenient and indeed safe, but there’s something amiss. Our primal instinct to be in a constant search for the ultimate thrill is starting to boil and cars today are having a hard time satisfying it.

Happily however there are exceptions – a familiar, yet small company called Ariel still offers that what many other do not any more – an unbridled fun generator called the Atom. Founded in 2001, Ariel is a 7 employee, Somerset (England) based firm that produces performance vehicles. It’s production portfolio consists of four projects – The Ariel Atom 1, 2 and 3 and the Ariel Atom 500 – all rather limited in numbers and there’s a reason for that. To begin with, if it’s a car it doesn’t look like one, if it’s a bike, it has four wheels and a steering wheel. It doesn’t come with a windshield nor a roof and not even a boot for that matter. The chassis is also a body and a frame and all the various car mechanics are slightly or completely exposed to the human eye. So, in terms of practicality it is a disaster. But now we are going somewhere – it’s exciting just to look at.

    Ariel Atom 3 Works

The Atom certainly wasn’t made to pull up next to that fancy restaurant you were thinking of visiting. I mean, because of the disheveled person sitting next to you who used to be your elegant partner and because of the bugs in your hair and between your teeth you are likely to be rejected a table that evening. And why would you and your passenger look like that upon arrival? Well, when you operate an Atom you always feel the temptation to give it the beans, partly because it’s so light (612 kg) and partly because it has a magnificent supercharged 2.0 L, 300 bhp Honda Civic Type R engine ready for exploiting. And that is if you don’t go with the 500 which has an even more hardcore 3.0 liter John Hartley V8 engine that develops 500 bhp (in a car weighing less than a ton!). So in essence, when you put your foot down your body is getting destroyed by immense G forces and skin pulling wind resistance (no windshield, remember?).

    Ariel Atom 500 V8

That gives us an idea how much the Ariel Atom does not care about safety and driver aids. While thundering down the road, stomp on the brakes and you’ll end up skidding off in a vast cloud of tire smoke for there are no anti-locking systems to interfere. Dare a mistake at a high-speed bend and you’ll miss the electronic stability control that puts you back in line. Yet, the thing about the Atom is the improbability of something going wrong and that has something to do with it’s nimbleness and ease of control. It doesn’t need all the computerized gizmos which only add weight in excess. Instead, steering is light and sharp (you can actually see, while driving, the front wheels clipping apexes and working their magic), the gearbox is a charm and 0 to 60 takes less than 3 seconds – what more does an adrenaline junkie need?

So it’s no wonder that the Atom gained such praise from automotive reviewers and critics over the last several years. It’s a technological landmark that is fun and extraordinary to drive – just a little bit of road legal lunacy in our everyday sensible lives.

  • New Honda Civic Super Bowl Spot [VIDEO]

2012-Honda-Civic-thumbEvert tought what would it be to have an actual “brainstorm”. Well it seems that the people at Honda are having one on a daily basis and the results are quite dramatic. What made us think so is  the new Honda Super Bowl 00.30 second spot about how a Civic is born.

It is a nice composition of CGI graphics, deep and serious narration and clever metaphors. The spark which can be seen as passion and innovation starts off from the basis of the factory and goes trough daring leaps, fears, challenges and obstacles until it culminates into the great reality that is the Civic. But lets not get too literary – Now in its ninth generation, the 2012 Civic is available from just $26 027 for the entry level (SE) 1.4-litre 100PS i-VTEC.

“We have timed the launch of the TV advert to coincide with the first cars arriving in showrooms to really maximise awareness. The advert is a synopsis of the unknown journey the engineers took to continuously improve the Civic and is brought to life in a dramatic reveal of the new model at the end.” commented Martin Moll, Head of Marketing, Honda (UK)

It also encourages the active audience transitioning between their twenties and their thirties to conquer their aspirations by completing their own “Leap List.” It’s no secret that the CR- is a pillar vehicle in the Honda lineup, but the goal of the ad is to bring to it even more fun and youthfulness, which are inherent to the brand.

To go further into details, Broderick is playing himself while drawing on his well-known coming-of-age character, which the CR-V target audience grew up watching. More importantly, the commercial reminds viewers to go out and embrace life by doing whatever you want to do and not just the things included in the “have to” list.

  • HONDA at Tokyo Auto Salon 2012

HONDA ThumbHonda has just participated in the Tokyo Auto Salon 2012 with models of automobiles, motorcycles, power products, racing vehicles. In the exhibit, Honda has presented a variety of ways to customize a vehicle, while keeping the joy of mobility and the appeal of the motor sport cars.

Firstly, the presented future automobiles include two study models based on currently available production vehicles. The so called Honda FLASH BOX for example is all based on the all-new Honda N BOX Custom minicar, which went on sale in the end of last year. However the FLASH BOX features a special body color, reflective decal sheets and LEDs, which are used as a decorative motive in both exterior and interior. The next vehicle, called the Honda Feed Wa, is based on the Honda Freed Hybrid compact minivan. Here the “spirit” of the vehicle is hidden in the name, in which the word “Wa” comes from Japanese language and refers to the traditional Japanese culture. Hence, we can see all over the exterior the ancient Japanese art of lacquering and in the interior – flowers, which represent the four seasons.

  • 2013 Honda Accord Coupe Concept – NAIAS

Honda has revealed the Accord Coupe Concept today at the North American International Auto Show. The new ninth-generation 2013 model is set to go on-sale this fall. It boasts cutting edge technologies combined with bold design and nice powerful engines.

“Marking the 30th anniversary of U.S. production, this new ninth-generation Accord will raise the bar again through a tour de force of new Honda powertrain and safety technologies, geared to ensure that Honda and the Accord continue to lead in fuel economy, safety and fun-to-drive performance,” commented John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda.

The engine range includes a new 2.4 liter Earth Dreams with 184PS (135 kW) and 240Nm (177 lb-ft). It is coupled with a 6-speed manual or a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). There is also a hybrid model with a 163PS (120 kW) electric motor and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine. Last, but not least, Accord can be power by a mighty 3.5-liter V6 with 314PS (231 kW) and 359Nm (265 lb-ft). It can be connected to a 6-speed manual or a new 6-speed automatic.

The new Accord will be available with Honda’s first application of Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) technology. Both systems use a camera mounted behind the windshield to alert drivers if the car is moving out of its lane or to warn drivers of a potential collision in front of them.

The standard equipment is amazing, but the most interesting features are the Bluetooth 3 HandsFreeLink phone interface, a full-color intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) and an SMS text messaging function. Another standard feature and first for the Accord is the introduction of a Pandora Internet Radio interface4, compatible with the Apple iPhone, which works with the vehicle’s audio controls and i-MID.

  • Honda Crosstour with a Fresh Lineup

The Honda Crosstour will be available with a new 4-cylinder engine and two trim levels next month. It will be cheaper than it’s V6 predecessor and also more economical – the mpg has gone up with 3 and 2 points (EPA) respectively for urban and extra urban driving.

In terms of design, the Crosstour is a warehouse on 17′ wheels, wrapped around in a curvy, slippery body. Two new paint finishes, with matching door handles, will be available for these newcomers – Twilight Blue Metallic and Basque Red Pearl II. Inside, at the back there is an under-floor compartment which adds to the practicality and reversible cargo floor panels that can be used for transporting dirty items.

In the cabin, equipment is abundant. The Crosstour EX, which is the lower trim line, gets as standard auto-on/off headlights, USB audio interface and an electrochroming rearview mirror as well as back-up camera display with integrated guidelines. The list goes on as we get also projector-beam headlights, a moonroof, body-colored defrosting electric side mirrors, electronic front-door windows and air conditioning with second-row ventilation. Multimedia indulgences include a 360-watt AM/FM 6-disc audio system with seven speakers and a steering wheel with controls on it for the cruise, audio and phone systems. The EX-L (the higher trim line) gets all of that plus a leather interior, heated front seats, setting memory storage for the driver’s seat and side view mirrors’  position, dual-zone automatic climate control and an even better audio system with Kevlar® cone speakers and front aluminum dome-type tweeter speakers. Also available on the Crosstour EX-L is the Honda Satellite-linked Navigation System.

    2012 Honda Crosstour EX-L (4-cylinder)
    2012 Honda Crosstour EX-L (4-cylinder)

The power necessary to move all that technology around, comes from a 2.4 16-valve DOHC i-VTEC® engine that delivers 192 horsepower at 7,000 RPM and 162 lb-ft. of torque at 4,400 RPM. This is quite respectable considering the fact that the combined fuel economy stands at the affordable 24 mpg (EPA). One way to achieve such efficiency is to fit a clever 5-speed automatic gearbox with Grade Logic Control as standard to all trim lines. And that is just what Honda have done.

Safety has been addressed thanks to the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure that the Crosstour gets. The key is in the shell’s functional design which aids occupant protection and offers increased crash tolerance in frontal collisions. Other safety features on the Crosstour include Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor, driver’s and front passenger’s side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, and active front seat head restraints.

The 2012 Honda Crosstour comes with a 3-year/36,000-mile new-car limited warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, and a 5-year/unlimited-mile corrosion limited warranty.

  • Cars Under 30 000$ You Can Buy Today

So you have 30 000$ laying around and you want to buy a car? Well great! Always willing to give reasonable consumer advice, we at automobilesreview.com have compiled a list of the best cars out there that go effortlessly under that limit.

    Mazda RX-8 – Starting at $26,795

It’s nice to have something exclusive just to tackle the mundane day-to-day life. So why not try the Mazda RX-8? Yes, it has been around for over 7 years now and soon it will be gone but it still is capable to put a smile on your face and also to punch you in the chest. While retaining a typical sloping profile of a two-door coupé it actually has four doors if we count the clever rear-hinged “freestyle” ones at the back. That gives you a certain degree of practicality and also something to brag about  The power comes from a 1.3 but it is a rotary Wankel engine so it develops the staggering 232 units of horsepower. However, despite it’s size, this engine is quite thirsty (because of working in a completely different manner from conventional engines) for both fuel and oil. So running costs might be a problem for some.

    Mazda RX-8
    Mazda RX-8

    MINI Cooper S – $23,800

This is the closest thing to a BMW you can get for that kind of money. It has a 1.6 twin scroll turbocharged engine with fully variable valve timing. So in essence you get 181 hp in a car that weighs no more than a double cheeseburger. It has perfect road manners, plenty of efficiency and a classy image deriving from an old British icon. It’s not very big though, is it?

    MINI Cooper S (2010)
    MINI Cooper S (2010)

VW Golf GTI –  Starting at $23,700

This was an easy pick. Ever since the magnificent Mk.1, GTIs have always been dominant on the hot hatch market. Blistering performance, superb handling and a solid image are just a few superlatives that can describe what the capable hand German engineers has done here. Ever evolving, the Golf now makes use of a powerful 2.0 l. TSI engine coupled with either a 6-speed DSG gearbox or a 6-speed manual for diehard motoring enthusiasts. It’s hard to find anything here  not to like. Focus ST fans may argue that it is a bit dreary and plain but that is as far as they would go.

    Volkswagen Golf VI GTI (2012)
    Volkswagen Golf VI GTI (2012)

    Mazda MX-5 – Starting at $23,190

Another Mazda here however, unlike the RX-8, the MX does not take itself very seriously. It has a refined 2.0 l, 136 hp engine and not a million horsepower rocket thruster under the hood. Nor does it get any cunningly disguised compartments. All it does is to stay true to itself – front mid engine, rear-wheel drive, two seats and a soft top. It was originally conceived to honer the memory of the emblematic small British roadster class. Yes, most probably not the technological miracle that other cars try to be, but you’ll notice heads turning while driving around in town and that will make you happy.

    Fiat 500 Abarth – Starting at $23,000

We wouldn’t miss a chance to add some Italian pesto on our petrol salad. It is another iconic supermini which changed the world of consumerism when it got out in 1957. Today, more than half a century later it is still as good to the taste as Italian wine. Abarth is a subsidiary company for Fiat that produces hardcore, lunatic, rubber burning demons. With their help this 2012 imp now has a 16-valve 1.4-liter engine that brings 160 hp. The design has managed to preserve its simplistic spirit coming from the 500’s ancestors and yet it is absolutely stunning to look at. Is it better than the MINI? We will let you decide.

    Fiat 500 Abarth (2012)

    Dodge Challenger R/T – Starting at $29,995

“It’s a muscle car and it is awesome!” That is at least what the kid in all of us says. In reality it is impractical, thirsty, barely a technological landmark and it handles like a rowing boat.  But bare with us on that one. Imagine – you on the open road, the sun blazing down on you, haze rising from the black tarmac. What do we need to complete the picture? You guessed it, it’s a Dodge Challenger. But it’s not the power, nor are the emblematic looks you want the most. All you want to hear is the sound of a 375 hp, V8 HEMI thundering down that road with you behind the wheel. That sort of practice should actually be classified as therapy for it might be the most smile-inducing thing out there. But it is even more than that: with it you are fighting for a cause to save this dying breed of vehicles which used to be so cherished in the past.

    Honda Clarity FCX – Around $22 000

So Cameron Diaz drives a hybrid and so does Leonardo DiCaprio. The list goes on for miles and it makes you think: “what is it about those cars?” Well, nowadays it has become a trend to think about the environment. 30 years ago it might have been “cool” to own the above mentioned Dodge Challenger but now Prius is the new swagger. But are you willing to play along and subdue to the  the newly established norms? No, you are better than that. Go full on environmentally friendly with the Honda Clarity FCX – the car that according to Jay Leno will save the supercar just like the the car saved the horse. Put simply, the FCX will be the future of motoring when petrol starts running low. It is a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle which you just top up with compressed hydrogen and then use the oxygen from the atmosphere to create a reaction with an end result – H2O (water). The energy expelled from the reaction however powers up a 136 horsepower electric motor. This mode of energy producing eliminates the need of the dreadful battery packs used in various hybrids which are unreliable and dependent on power sockets and the weather. The Honda is efficient, clean and quite normal actually. The only problem of driving around in it is that you might flood the Earth eventually (joking really). While it is amazingly cheap to buy, obtaining one is as tricky as obtaining hydrogen itself. About 200 vehicles will be leased over the next three years, primarily in Southern California. But if you do manage to get one, you wont get more exclusive than that.
