Here is an easy way to embarrass yourself (your company) in front of a lot of people. Just take a Golf GTI Concept, make its suspension lower by using straps pulling the springs down and then show this car at huge Auto Show. This formula is perfect for only one thing – HUGE failure.
We can’t even think how this happened. Probably, VAG don’t have enough resources for creating lowering springs for their showcase vehicles or the engineer responsible for the suspension of this car was under the influence of something…
Of course, this is not fatal, because obviously the car won’t run in series production with straps on the springs. Still, it is quite fun and embarrassing, when a company gets caught faking it.
Still, this is “nothing” compared to Lincoln MKZ concept at the North American International Auto Show, which started smoking in front of everybody.
Peugeot has announced a limited edition of the new 208 GTi. Only 29 (one for each year since the UK launch of the original 205 GTi in 1984) this model will come with an enhanced specification. Worldwide, just 54 will be sold.
The price is £20,495, which is a bit high, but the car totally worth it.
Each car will be individually numbered, visually exclusive and specified to a high standard with Satellite Navigation and, for the first time on a Peugeot − Digital Radio (DAB). All cars will also feature a Union Jack flag on the lower grille, signifying the importance of the GTi badge to the UK.
This range topping GTi model will be numbered from 01 to 29, and will come with exclusive satin pearlescent white paint and 17” Carbon Onyx Black Alloys.
Production of this GTi is scheduled for April 2013 and these cars will be available for hand-over to customers ahead of the 208 GTi official launch date in late May.
British buyers will be delighted with this modern take of a true Peugeot GTi classic.
It’s been a tradition for over 30 years now – a convention within the convention – The “GTI Meeting at Wörthersee”…. for Volkswagen people. This year a concept “warm” hatch is making an appearance – It’s the Polo WRC Street. And calling it warm is a massive understatement. Surely however, the GTI festival won’t be a party of one. Lot’s of other exciting appearances will be made as almost all of Europe rolls into Austria for the event.
Literally taken from the track and put on the streets, the Polo WRC Concept is due to become a reality in 2013. It’s mad looks contribute to it’s appeal – a rear spoiler, a diffuser, a sporty and lowered suspension and a bunch of R-WRC logos. It’s not exactly a real WRC car (it wouldn’t be road legal) but it is out there – we are talking 220 spine-snapping PS from a 2.0-liter TSI engine. Want one for sure.
Volkswagen Polo WRC Street
What is the real deal however is the Polo R-WRC – a road-going prototype of the actual FIA World Rally Championship. It’s pretty serious about taking on its WRC rivals next year. At it’s core a 1.6 TSI engine pumps out the 300 PS (that’s the championship limit).
Other notable appearances at the GTI Meeting will be the Golf GTI Cabriolet – a 210 PS open-top with a DSG transmission as an option and an XDS electronic differential lock on the front axle.
If you happen to be there, be on the look out for a Volkswagen Golf “GTI Black Dynamic” design concept as well. It’s been styled by a bunch of young men and women for the… young men and women – black and red motives, a low ride, a 1,800 Watt sound system with nine speakers and subsequently hardly any space for luggage.
The last of the best would be a Golf GTI “White Concept” and as you might imagine, it is white in color. Inside however, again we get that Black Dynamic gene of red and black (it really is a classic this combo). Some contrasting stitches here and there, on the fine Nappa leather, GTI logos. It’s more of a visual feast than anything else.
The GTi Concept was presented by Peugeot at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.
The specially created vehicle features two chrome exhaust tips, complete aerodynamics package and some badges at the rear quarter panels.
The interior features some sport elements, too. There is a leather steering wheel, a lether gear knob and Nappa leather sporty seats. The instrument cluster features LED backlighting.
The GTi Concept is powered by a turbocharged 1.6 liter THP with 197PS (145 kW) and 275Nm (203 lb-ft). It is coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Other performance elements feature complete braking system and a revised suspension. Probably, Peugeot will put in production the GTi Concept as a top-of-range 208 model. We expect soon more information and full details about this performance hatchback.
2012 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet will be presented at the Geneva Motor Show, next week. It features four-seats, electrically powered fabric roof, performance and practicality.
The Golf GTI Cabriolet features all performance GTI design cues including radiator grille has a honeycomb structure with red edging and the GTI badge, a new front bumper incorporating incorporates a deep honeycomb air dam and distinctive vertical fog lights. There are also side sill extensions, a bespoke rear diffuser with a chrome tailpipe on either side. Last, but not least, the smoked LED tail lights complete the aggressive look. The ride is lowered and sits on 17” Monza alloy wheels.
The interior boats classic tartan Jacara cloth upholstery, while the Vienna leather is optional. There is a bespoke GTI multifunction steering wheel wrapped in leather as well as the handbrake and gear lever gaiter, all finished with contrasting red stitching. The pedals are in brushed aluminum and the doors and facia have black Edge decorative inlays.
The new GTI Cabrio is powered by the same 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the GTI hatchback. It is mated to a 6-speed manual as standard and there is an option for 6-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox. The engine produces 210PS (154 kW) at 5300RPM and 280Nm (207 lb-ft) at 1700RPM. 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 237 km/h (147 mph).
A standard EDS electronic differential lock and XDS transverse differential lock help to ensure that the power is easily transferred to the road and the driver has maximum traction at every conditions.
Like all Golf Cabriolet models, the GTI comes with automatically deploying rollover protection, front and side head/thorax airbags and a driver’s knee airbag as standard, all of which helped it to achieve a five-star (96%) rating for adult occupancy in Euro NCAP crash tests.
2012 Golf GTI Cabriolet will hit the UK market in the second half of the year.
With the 5th generation of Golf GTIs, Volkswagen decided to bring back the essence of the original and iconic Golf GTI Mk 1. Anyone who has seen the the Golf GTI from the 70’s can immediately point out which genes have made it on to the Mk. 5. The red lining of the front honeycomb grille, the black side skirts, the plaid seats and a typical tachometer all give away the otherwise discrete hot hatch.
Shmidt Revolution, a German tuning company, finding it pointless to try and improve on perfection (so to speak) have preserved all these elements in their project called The Powerhouse. What they have done to change the appearance of the VW however is to put an again standard R32 rear bumper and add a lip spoiler and some skirts here and there.
Schmidt VW Golf V GTI
The original 2.0 TFSI, 200 horsepower engine has undergone an ECU upgrade and the air intake has been tweaked by HG Motorsport from Lubeck. The end result is a 275 horsepower lump of power that can take you anywhere you want. And you will be able to go literally anywhere as there is also an all-in-one Kenwood DNX520VBT navigation system provided.
To wrap it up, Shmidt have fitted four massive 19 inch Gotham wheels wearing 225/35R19 Marangoni M-power all-rounders.
So you have 30 000$ laying around and you want to buy a car? Well great! Always willing to give reasonable consumer advice, we at automobilesreview.com have compiled a list of the best cars out there that go effortlessly under that limit.
It’s nice to have something exclusive just to tackle the mundane day-to-day life. So why not try the Mazda RX-8? Yes, it has been around for over 7 years now and soon it will be gone but it still is capable to put a smile on your face and also to punch you in the chest. While retaining a typical sloping profile of a two-door coupé it actually has four doors if we count the clever rear-hinged “freestyle” ones at the back. That gives you a certain degree of practicality and also something to brag about The power comes from a 1.3 but it is a rotary Wankel engine so it develops the staggering 232 units of horsepower. However, despite it’s size, this engine is quite thirsty (because of working in a completely different manner from conventional engines) for both fuel and oil. So running costs might be a problem for some.
This is the closest thing to a BMW you can get for that kind of money. It has a 1.6 twin scroll turbocharged engine with fully variable valve timing. So in essence you get 181 hp in a car that weighs no more than a double cheeseburger. It has perfect road manners, plenty of efficiency and a classy image deriving from an old British icon. It’s not very big though, is it?
This was an easy pick. Ever since the magnificent Mk.1, GTIs have always been dominant on the hot hatch market. Blistering performance, superb handling and a solid image are just a few superlatives that can describe what the capable hand German engineers has done here. Ever evolving, the Golf now makes use of a powerful 2.0 l. TSI engine coupled with either a 6-speed DSG gearbox or a 6-speed manual for diehard motoring enthusiasts. It’s hard to find anything here not to like. Focus ST fans may argue that it is a bit dreary and plain but that is as far as they would go.
Volkswagen Golf VI GTI (2012)
Mazda MX-5 – Starting at $23,190
Another Mazda here however, unlike the RX-8, the MX does not take itself very seriously. It has a refined 2.0 l, 136 hp engine and not a million horsepower rocket thruster under the hood. Nor does it get any cunningly disguised compartments. All it does is to stay true to itself – front mid engine, rear-wheel drive, two seats and a soft top. It was originally conceived to honer the memory of the emblematic small British roadster class. Yes, most probably not the technological miracle that other cars try to be, but you’ll notice heads turning while driving around in town and that will make you happy.
We wouldn’t miss a chance to add some Italian pesto on our petrol salad. It is another iconic supermini which changed the world of consumerism when it got out in 1957. Today, more than half a century later it is still as good to the taste as Italian wine. Abarth is a subsidiary company for Fiat that produces hardcore, lunatic, rubber burning demons. With their help this 2012 imp now has a 16-valve 1.4-liter engine that brings 160 hp. The design has managed to preserve its simplistic spirit coming from the 500’s ancestors and yet it is absolutely stunning to look at. Is it better than the MINI? We will let you decide.
“It’s a muscle car and it is awesome!” That is at least what the kid in all of us says. In reality it is impractical, thirsty, barely a technological landmark and it handles like a rowing boat. But bare with us on that one. Imagine – you on the open road, the sun blazing down on you, haze rising from the black tarmac. What do we need to complete the picture? You guessed it, it’s a Dodge Challenger. But it’s not the power, nor are the emblematic looks you want the most. All you want to hear is the sound of a 375 hp, V8 HEMI thundering down that road with you behind the wheel. That sort of practice should actually be classified as therapy for it might be the most smile-inducing thing out there. But it is even more than that: with it you are fighting for a cause to save this dying breed of vehicles which used to be so cherished in the past.
So Cameron Diaz drives a hybrid and so does Leonardo DiCaprio. The list goes on for miles and it makes you think: “what is it about those cars?” Well, nowadays it has become a trend to think about the environment. 30 years ago it might have been “cool” to own the above mentioned Dodge Challenger but now Prius is the new swagger. But are you willing to play along and subdue to the the newly established norms? No, you are better than that. Go full on environmentally friendly with the Honda Clarity FCX – the car that according to Jay Leno will save the supercar just like the the car saved the horse. Put simply, the FCX will be the future of motoring when petrol starts running low. It is a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle which you just top up with compressed hydrogen and then use the oxygen from the atmosphere to create a reaction with an end result – H2O (water). The energy expelled from the reaction however powers up a 136 horsepower electric motor. This mode of energy producing eliminates the need of the dreadful battery packs used in various hybrids which are unreliable and dependent on power sockets and the weather. The Honda is efficient, clean and quite normal actually. The only problem of driving around in it is that you might flood the Earth eventually (joking really). While it is amazingly cheap to buy, obtaining one is as tricky as obtaining hydrogen itself. About 200 vehicles will be leased over the next three years, primarily in Southern California. But if you do manage to get one, you wont get more exclusive than that.
Volkswagen now offers more goodies for the latest GT, GTI, GTD or R models. From today, the leather upholstery will be offered as standard as well as Bluetooth phone preparation. This means that customers benefit from over £2 000-worth of extra value.
Luxurious black ‘Vienna’ leather upholstery was previously a £1,890 option, and offers more than just a fine hide seat covering. Both passenger and driver get electrically operated lumbar support and heated seats, which should receive a warm welcome in the coming winter months.
The GT, GTI and GTD all feature sports seats with bolsters to hold occupants securely in place, while the sports seats in the Golf R have even deeper bolsters, as befits the R’s extra performance. Recaro sports seats remain an option for Golf R customers.
Bluetooth phone preparation was previously a £255 option, which integrates compatible mobile telephones with the Golf’s in-car entertainment system, allowing users to access many of their phone’s features using buttons on the radio or via the standard leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel.
This upgrade is offered for just £140 on GT models, and for no extra cost on GTD, GTI and R.
2012 Golf VI GTI is powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol delivering 210PS (154 kW) at 5300RPM and 280Nm (207 lb-ft) at just 1700RPM. 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph)
The price list starts from just £21 310 for 2012 Volkswagen Golf VI GT. The GTD model costs £24 635 and the GTI is a bit pricy £25 305.

SIEMONEIT RACING has unveiled a special tuning package for the new Golf VI GTI. The name of the project is black pearl.
The exterior tuning package consists of a carbon-fibre bonnet, in-house sport exhaust system and a set of nice wheels.
The performance package consists of a special air intake which forces cooler air into the combustion chamber for better efficiency. There is also an ECU re-map and the results are more than satisfying – 355 PS and 485 Nm. However, Hardware modifications will transform the R20 Golf into a beast producing about 530HP.
At SIEMONEIT RACING the stainless steel SR20.500.1 exhaust system for the current Golf R20 was developed for performances well above the 500 HP limit. The system starts out at 76mm at the turbocharger with a 100 cpi (or optionally a 200 cpi) metal catalytic converter and from there it goes straight through to the two 90-mm exhaust outlets. The system is made of US405.409 marine quality stainless steel and is indispensable for performance of 330 HP and above. It goes without saying that the system is ready for the TÜV Inspection.
