  • Toyota reveals GT 86 Blue Edition model

2018 Toyota GT86 Blue EditionToyota reveals GT86 Blue Edition – it is part of the so-called Club Series and focuses on styling and performance. Also, the design team has decided to gear this bad boy with numerous exclusive components and offer some exterior goodies that would be available only for this particular model. So, let’s check it out!

The first notable feature of the new Blue Edition is the color – Electric Blue (you don’t say!) is dominating the whole body, while small black components are painted in glossy black finish – perfect contrasting color, right? Such are the front grille, rear spoiler and diffuser, door mirror housings and front fog light surrounds. On the other hand, driver and passengers will enjoy a cozy and comfortable ride in classy interior with numerous black leather and Alcantara-covered components.

    2018 Toyota GT86 Blue Edition

There is also a special Performance Pack that offers more agile ride, thanks to the introduction of Sachs-tuned suspension fine-tuning, Sachs Performance dampers and Brembo brakes – what is special about these brakes is that they not only contribute to better control and stopping power, but also offer improved pedal feel. And there is neat visual update: the red Brembo calipers and these neat eye-catching 17-inch black alloy wheels. Sweet!

SEE ALSO: Vilner Bulgaria has revised a Mercedes-AMG interior. Check it out!

In terms of performance rates, Blue Edition does not disappoint. The vehicle comes with revised chassis with low center of gravity and low-set driving position. And remaining true to its sporty nature, it features a front-mounted power unit – it is a 197hp 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder unit with rear-wheel drive. However, it is up to customers to specify the drivetrain system with either manual or automatic gearbox with six speeds. This whole system offers some pretty good performance rates: the vehicle offers a top speed of 252km/h (234km/h for the automatic gearbox version) and quick 0 to 100km/h sprint, measured at 7.7 seconds and 8.4 seconds for the automatic option.

  • Manga-inspired Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept pays tribute to the mid-80s AE86 Corolla

Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept front and side view

Car from Initial D manga comics is the inspiration for the GT86 concept

If you are into manga, then you have probably heard of the Initial D: cult Japanese comics, where the young hero, Takumi Fujiwara, drove a modified AE86. He honed his driving skills on mountain roads as delivery driver for his father’s tofu shop. As you can expect, the car immediately became a star, influencing the emerging drifting scene and inspiring a live action movie and various arcade games.

What’s even more exciting is that Toyota’s new GT86 project is inspired and based on the world-famous mid-80s AE86 Corolla featured in the series. Well, here’s a hint, since the GT86 was introduced in 2012, it was instantly recognized as the successor to the rear-wheel drive Corolla GT Coupe.

Now, Toyota is re-emphasizing this link with one-off project called GT86 Initial D concept. Besides the spirit, the car also mimics the livery of the Corolla featured in the comic book. Highlighting the pop-culture roots, the brand has made the fantastic decision to commission manga artist Sonia Leong to design a series of panoramic backdrops that put the real GT86 into comic strip action scenes.

Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept interior

The GT86 Initial D concept’s livery copies manga car’s panda-style monochrome outfit. In addition, it utilizes new versions of the same Japanese market components that were once on the successful original. Precisely, here are featured custom-made RS Watanabe alloy wheels, TRD suspension, a Fujitsubo exhaust system, Cusco strut brace, and a carbon fibre bonnet.

The yellow-tinted fog lights that were a trend back in the 80s haven’t been forgotten. They hint at the Cibié spotlights and the silver-painted engine cover. The latter features underneath high-revving 20-valve ‘Silver Top’ 4A-GE unit.

Modernized a little bit, the car sports carbon fibre door handle protectors and mirror covers. They give a similar effect to the black plastic material used on the AE86. Just like the Initial D car, this one features mud flaps and tinted rear lenses and no boot lid spoiler. Check out the details below for further inspiration.

All in all, this Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept acknowledges how important the AE86 was. Unfortunately, it won’t reach production, but still it will be attending motoring events around Britain throughout the summer. So, if you are lucky (and have the passport) you might end up having a glimpse on it.

    2017 Toyota GT86 Rear View

In terms of driving dynamics, the GT86 from the 2017 model year will be equipped with new suspension, with revised shock absorber tuning and spring rates. Despite the changes so far and the expectations for modifications on the engine, it will stay unaltered, meaning that the GT86 will be driven by the well known front-mounted, naturally aspirated 2.0-litre “boxer” engine that drives the rear wheels.

Besides the new MY2017 GT86, Toyota has been also developing a racing variant, GT86 CS-Cup, which will compete at the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit. The GT86 CS-R3 version of it will be available to customers for rallying events.

  • One-Off Toyota GT86 Collection Pays Homage to its Heritage

Toyota GT86 is one of the most famous and wanted sports cars in company’s line-up of vehicles. Well, the news that has just arrived is that Toyota is paying tribute to its heritage with classic a fleet of six GT86 coupes dressed in classic liveries. They are actually a celebration of the great Toyota race and rally cars of the past. The one-off liveries have been achieved with the help of vinyl wraps, lowered springs, stainless steel exhaust and retro-styled wheels.

As a matter of fact, many of the great characteristics of the GT86 have their roots in the generations of classic performance Toyota sports cars. So, each car is inspired by a different model, which was famous in the racing competitions during the last 50 years.

SEE ALSO: 2015 Toyota GT86 Goes on Sale

The fleet of the six starts with the two versions of the 2000GT, Ove Andersson’s 1970s Celica 1600GT rally car, the IMSA GTU Celica famous for its wins in the 80s, the World Rally Championship Celica GT-Four and the Esso Ultron Tiger Supra from the All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship.

Behind the vinyl application we can see the work of the experts at Motor Mode. They have literally mimicked the key elements from the original liveries onto the GT86. In addition, the cars also received new springs that have brought them closer to the ground. The right height was actually lowered by 40mm.

At last, rounding out the retro-styling are the Rota wheels in different finishes and the Milltek Sport stainless steel exhaust systems.

If you happen to be at Goodwood Festival of Speed’s Moving Motor Show on 25 June, then you’ll have the opportunity to ride any of the coupes in the one-off collection, because they will be available for public drive. It is also the place, where they will make their public debut. There will be also a static display supporting the GT86 Drift Experience at Goodwood’s race circuit.

  • Toyota GT86 sets Guiness World Drift Record – 144.1 km [video]

Harald Müller managed to set a new Guinness World Record for longest vehicle drift in a Toyota GT 86. The previous holder was Johan Schwartz – BMW Performance Center Instructor, who managed to drift the new M5 F10 for 82.520 km (51.278 miles). Harald Müller has achieved whopping 144.126 km (89.55 miles).

The record attempt was made in Samsun, Turkey on July 15th at an event organized by local board of Youth and Sports. The course measured 235.5 meters, where Müller did 612 laps in 2 hours, 25 minutes and 18 seconds with a 2012 Toyota GT 86.

The lightweight RWD car is powered 2.0 liter boxer engine delivering 200HP (147 kW) and 205Nm (152 lb-ft) of torque. It also features a rear spoiler, 17” light alloy wheels, chrome-finished dual exhaust tailpipes and a signature “T”-mesh grille. That T motif is repeated in the shape of the rear fog light, set centrally between the tailpipes.

At the video below you can see, that the GT 86 didn’t go all the time with a proper drift (sideways). Instead, the vehicle was going straight several times and stopped for a turn. We believe that the record should be a continuous drift without any stops or huge corrections. Still, Guinness admits the record, so it is official.

    Enjoy!

  • 2015 Toyota GT86 Is Here!

2015-Toyota-GT86-THUMB2015 Toyota GT86 is here and it is showing-off its perfectly enhanced aerodynamics for the new model year. It will offer even better handling and stability due to the optimization of suspension’s rigidity and shock absorbers. In addition, the changes are also evident in the interior, which now features new instrument panel finish. An entirely new element is the shark-fin type antenna that comes to enhance the aerodynamics and deliver a bolder look.

The GT86 was officially introduced in 2012 and made a big furor. Wisely enough, Toyota is continuing the development of the car. The foundation of the upgrade is the more rigid fixation of the front suspension and the rear shock absorbers.

The rework of shock absorbers provide more stable damping and improved friction control, thus delivering smoother and communicative handling. Body-roll is reduced and the steering feel is sharper than before.

Another exclusive change is featured on the inside of the GT86. It is the new carbon-fibre motif on the dashboard insert. This not only gives more contemporary appearance of the car, but also hints to future utilization of the popular material.

On the outside, another introduction was made. It is the shark-fin antenna, which has been adopted in order to enhance the looks and aerodynamics of the car. The 2015 model year update also features a new pearl-white and silver paint finishes.

2015 Toyota GT86 will be available in dealerships only throughout Europe staring this summer.

  • Pure Sports Feeling: Dotz Shift Toyota GT86

The iconic Toyota GT86, the latest version of which was introduced back in 2012, has fallen in the hands of the German based tuners at Dotz Shift. They decided to enhance their dynamic pearl white version of the car, thus making it delivering the purest sports feeling.

As a reminder, this Toyota is driven by a 200 hp (147 kW) 2L flat engine which ensures its Japanese-racing qualities. Regarding the refinement, the specialists have equipped the car with TRD body kit that adds onto the architecture of the model.

Precisely, the kit consists of a front and rear spoiler, a 4-pipe rear silencer and Eibach springs. Next, they have also given the GT86 a set of new shoes to run on, namely the Dotz Shift shiny black and polished 19 inch wheels.

In fact, they are unique and feature rim with the star pattern formed by seven slender, edgy double spokes and deep lip. They are also lightweight because the recessed center reduces the wheel’s mass. The wheels are also offered in numerous ABE applications from 15 to 19 inch.
