  • Superchips Volkswagen Golf MK6 Bluemotion

superchips-vw-THUMBsuperchips-vw-651Superchips Volkswagen Golf MK6 Bluemotion is the latest tuning the Buckingham based firm has been dealing with. This Mk6 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDi 103 hp (75 kW) has boosted levels and fuelling settings to safely and reliably extract the remarkable increase in terms of power.

The enhancement was made with the utilization of extensive data logging, dyno testing and on-road analysis. In fact, the Superchips ECU remap achieves a proven maximum power gain of 41 hp (30 kW) at 4070 rpm.

Knowing the basic mathematics, this means that the transformed vehicle with its initial 103 hp, it is now capable of generating 144 horsepower. But this is not all: the Superchips ECU remap also modifies the torque output of the Golf.

After the installation that the company has implemented, the peak torque figure adds the remarkable 70 Nm (52 lb-ft) at just 2356 rpm, with serious gains from 2000 rpm onwards. The effect is a maximum torque of 307 Nm (227 lb-ft).

Now the one sitting behind the steering wheel will undoubtedly enjoy a great driving experience, thanks to these impressive power and torque increases. Furthermore, the engine is much keener to pull from all speeds, with the improved flexibility resulting in less gearchanges to manage progress.

At last, the Volkswagen’s fast cruising, towing and load carrying capabilities are additionally enhanced due to Superchips’ work. The optimized Golf TDi’s remap combined with the upgraded engine’s additional low down torque offers potential economy improvements of up to 7%.

  • The Seventh Volkswagen Golf is Out

Volkswagen-Golf-VII-thumbVolkswagen-Golf-VII-mediumTime to get excited since the seventh chapter of a 38-year-old legend is at our doorstep. The Volkswagen Golf VII made its debut in Berlin. More spunk and less fat for this one. Back to the primitive then!

Well, not really. The latest incarnation of the best seller will be still as complicated as a car can be – a new Modular Transverse Matrix body (which is supposedly roomier), a new information and entertainment system and even more interfering assistance software. Nevertheless, the Wolfsburg boffins have managed to trim off 100 kg of weight.

The 140 PS petrol engine is also now 23 percent more fuel efficient thanks to an already developed and tested cylinder deactivation system (remember the Polo Blue GT?). Additionaly, throughout the engine range, a stop/start system comes and standard and battery regeneration as well. Subsequently, we get figures that feel more at home with today’s diesel engines – 4.8 l / 100 km. Speaking of diesels, the 105 PS TDI in the Golf VII happens to sip just 3.8 l per 100 km. Add to that a BlueMotion trim and you get 3.2 l and less than 86 g/km of CO2 emissions.

Do not for a minute think however, that the seventh Golf will slip through without newly installed plants. There are two entirely new generations of engines, designed to offer power from 85 PS to 150 PS.

Be on the lookout for a full specification list.

The new Golf is promised to deliver improved comfort and safety features, despite the reduced weight of up to 100 kg. One of the new assistance systems is the multicollision brake. This in fact is a complete new feature which Volkswagen is going to implement for the first time.

Other systems include proactive occupant protection system, standard XDS electronic differential lock, ACC adaptive cruise control plus Front Assist and a City Emergency Braking function, Lane Assist lane-keeping assistant, fatigue detection, traffic sign detection and the latest generation of the automatic parking assistant Park Assist including OPS, automated light functions Light Assist and Dynamic Light Assist.

Some of the new technologies which are going to be included here are the progressive steering, selection of the driving profile with up to five modes, an electronic parking brake, a newly developed ergonomic sport seat, a guard against using the wrong fuel in the diesels, a new climate comfort windshield and a new generation of information and entertainment systems.

Another interesting fact around the Golf is that it has been made more spacious, safer and more comfortable. In addition to that, Volkswagen was able to reduce its weight by up to 100 kg compared to the previous model.

All of the above mentioned facts combined with the feature of two new engine lines, result in up to 23 per cent decrease of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

To be more precise, the new engines are the new 1.4 TSI with powerful 103 kW/140 PS and combined fuel consumption of just 4.8 l/100 km (112 g/km CO2) and the TDI with 77 kW/105 PS and combined fuel consumption of 3.8 l/100 km for emissions of 99 g/km CO2.

  • A Volkswagen Golf for the Summer by Schmidt

Schmidt-VW-Golf-GTI-Convertible-thumbWhen we heard that Schmidt Revolution are bringing out yet another Golf, we got excited. It was only after when we realized that the “programme” comprised solely of a set of wheels and a fancy audio system. The upside of the story is that, since the programme is just that, all Golfs are eligible to it. We were pleased to find out that Schmidt’s weapon of choice was a Volkswagen Golf Mk 6 Convertible GTI.

That means 210 hp coming from a 2.0-liter TSI engine which in turn uses a PDK transmission to channel that force to the wheels. This is where Schmidt made their move. The Golf here in the pictures has 8.5Jx19H2 Shift design wheels that boast 45 mm of positive offset. The color: gloss silver. Tires: Conti Sport Contact 5 sized 235/35R19. One however, can go a tad less conspicuous with the 8Jx18H2 version of the same wheels or even the 7,5x17H2 ones.

That leaves us with the B&S Sound system with Rockford Fosgate- and Mosconi-components, a foot-mounted subwoofer and the Kenwood DNX521DAB navigation which is as sophisticated as the Starship Enterprise.

So there you have it. The Schmidt Revolution Volkswagen Golf GTI Convertible – not a lot of work done but then again, not a lot of work needed to be done in order to end up with a genuinely good car.

  • Volkswagen with four awards from What Car?

Volkswagen managed to get four awards from the prestigious What Car? contest. The famous 2012 Volkswagen Up! claimed Car of the Year as well as the best City Car award. Other two victories are for Small Family Car – Volkswagen Golf VI and the coveted Safety Award.

“The Volkswagen up! sets new standards for a car at £10,000.  It’s a city car that can seat four adults, while offering new levels of refinement, quality and maturity at this price; none of its rivals feels quite so grown-up.  Buyers will be looking for even more for their money than ever in 2012, so the up! is a worthy winner of the What Car? Car of the Year.”, said What Car? editor-in-chief Chas Hallett.

The Safety Award was in large part the result of the availability of Volkswagen’s innovative City Emergency Braking system on the Up!.  Although safety features are no longer the preserve of larger, more expensive models, the judges were impressed by this particular example of ‘big car’ technology filtering down to a smaller model.  The system uses sensors to scan the space ahead, then applies the brakes automatically if it detects that the car is about to hit an object in front.  City Emergency Braking costs from just £225.

The Up! is available to order now, with prices starting at £7 995 (RRP OTR) and with the first models arriving in showrooms in March.

  • Shmidt Revolution and The Powerhouse

With the 5th generation of Golf GTIs, Volkswagen decided to bring back the essence of the original and iconic Golf GTI Mk 1. Anyone who has seen the the Golf GTI from the 70’s can immediately  point out which genes have made it on to the Mk. 5. The red lining of the front honeycomb grille, the black side skirts, the plaid seats and a typical tachometer all give away the otherwise discrete hot hatch.

Shmidt Revolution, a German tuning company, finding it pointless to try and improve on perfection (so to speak) have preserved all these elements in their project called The Powerhouse. What they have done to change the appearance of the VW however is to put an again standard R32 rear bumper and add a lip spoiler and some skirts here and there.

    Schmidt VW Golf V GTI
    Schmidt VW Golf V GTI

The original 2.0 TFSI, 200 horsepower engine has undergone an ECU upgrade and the air intake has been tweaked by HG Motorsport from Lubeck. The end result is a 275 horsepower lump of power that can take you anywhere you want. And you will be able to go literally anywhere as there is also an all-in-one Kenwood DNX520VBT  navigation system provided.

To wrap it up, Shmidt have fitted four massive 19 inch Gotham wheels wearing 225/35R19  Marangoni M-power all-rounders.
