2021 Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost - Front Angle

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has a unique fluency in its clients. Its close relationship with the women and men who patronise the marque affords the company’s decision-makers an unparalleled understanding of the super-luxury consumer: their aesthetic preferences, uncompromising lifestyle requirements and changing taste patterns. Only with this understanding, and briefings supplied by the brand’s Luxury Intelligence Unit, is the marque able to create an accurate product response. Black Badge is a vivid example of this.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has always attracted subversive clients – rebellious women and men who built their success by breaking rules, taking risks and challenging conventions. In the 2020s, these women and men engage with luxury products on their own terms. They reject suits for streetwear, use blockchain not banks and influence the analogue world through their digital endeavours. In doing so, they have created new codes of luxury that resonate with their sensibilities: darker in aesthetic, assertive in character and bold in design.

Their approach to Rolls-Royce products is no different. The marque has responded accordingly, developing new colour palettes, more technical surface treatments and even more powerful driving experiences without ever compromising the effortless sensibilities that have drawn this bold group of clients to the Rolls-Royce brand.

Black Badge, the highly successful alter ego of Rolls-Royce, now represents more than 27% of commissions worldwide and is codified by the mathematical symbol that represents a potential infinity, which is found within the motor car’s interior. This graphic, also known as the Lemniscate, was applied to Sir Malcolm Campbell’s record-breaking Rolls-Royce-powered Blue Bird K3 hydroplane and the marque’s designers nominated this hallmark for Black Badge motor cars to reflect their own unrelenting pursuit of power.

Rolls-Royce debuted Black Badge with Wraith and Ghost in 2016, followed by Dawn in 2017 then Cullinan in 2019. Today, a new, Post Opulent expression of Black Badge joins the family. The purest and most technologically advanced Black Badge motor car yet, Black Badge Ghost.

THE DARK SIDE OF POST OPULENCE

Conceived in response to a group of clients who requested a Rolls-Royce that was agile, discreet, highly connected and free of any superfluous design, the new Ghost is not just the most technologically advanced Rolls-Royce yet, but also the most aesthetically pure. In the twelve months since this motor car has been available, it has become one of the fastest-selling products in the marque’s history, representing more than 3,500 commissions worldwide.

This motor car also started a new design conversation in its relentless pursuit of minimalism and purity. Named ‘Post Opulence’ by Rolls-Royce designers, this aesthetic movement is characterised by reduction and substance. In service to this, exceptional materials are selected and celebrated while overt design is limited, intelligent and unobtrusive.

However, within this group of clients – who celebrate minimalism and material substance – a rebellious subset sought to create a disruptive expression of Ghost by permanently cloaking it in a shade so pure that its very classification as a colour remains a subject of debate: black. Black Badge Ghost reflects these clients’ desires. It is the dark side of Post Opulence: minimalism in extremis.

    EXTERIOR

Clients are free to select any of the marque’s 44,000 ‘ready-to-wear’ colours or create their own entirely unique Bespoke hue. However, the overwhelming majority of women and men who requested this darker expression of Ghost have selected the signature Black. To create what is the motor car industry’s darkest black, 100lbs (45kg) of paint is atomised and applied to an electrostatically charged body in white before being oven dried. The motor car then receives two layers of clear coat before being hand-polished by a team of four craftsman to produce the marque’s signature high-gloss piano finish.

At between three and five hours in duration, this operation is entirely unknown in mass production, creating an intensity simply unattainable elsewhere in the automotive industry. It is this depth of darkness that serves as the perfect canvas for clients to add a high-contrast, hand-painted Coachline, which has done much to create the Black Badge ‘black and neon’ aesthetic that has come to characterise this vivid family of Rolls-Royce motor cars.

2021 Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost Exterior

To match this dramatic coachwork, the marque’s Bespoke Collective of designers, engineers and craftspeople collaborated to create an entirely customisable process that allows Rolls-Royce hallmarks such as the high-polished Spirit of Ecstasy and Pantheon Grille to be subverted. Instead of simply painting these components, a specific chrome electrolyte is introduced to the traditional chrome plating process that is co-deposited on the stainless-steel substrate, darkening the finish. Its final thickness is just one micrometre – around one hundredth of the width of a human hair. Each of these components is precision-polished by hand to achieve a mirror-black chrome finish before it is fitted to the motor car.

The exterior treatment resolves with a Bespoke 21-inch composite wheelset. Designed in the Black Badge house style and reserved for Black Badge Ghost, the barrel of each wheel is made up of 22 layers of carbon fibre laid on three axes, then folded back on themselves at the outer edges of the rim, forming a total of 44 layers of carbon fibre for greater strength. A 3D-forged aluminium hub is bonded to the rim using aerospace-grade titanium fasteners and finished with the marque’s hallmark Floating Hubcap, ensuring the Double R monogram remains upright at all times. To celebrate the material substance and remarkable surface effect, a lightly tinted lacquer is applied to protect the finish but still allow clients to observe the technical complexity of the wheels unique carbon fibre construction.

    INTERIOR

Advanced luxury materials have been meticulously created and crafted for a unique ambience in the interior suite. While recalling the dramatic mechanical intent of Black Badge Ghost, the materials are true to Ghost’s Post Opulent design philosophy – one defined by authenticity and material substance rather than overt statement. In this spirit, a complex but subtle weave that incorporates a deep diamond pattern rendered in carbon and metallic fibres has been created by the marque’s craftspeople.

Multiple wood layers are pressed onto the interior component substrates, using black Bolivar veneer for the uppermost base layer. This forms a dark foundation for the Technical Fibre layers that follow. Leaves woven from resin-coated carbon and contrasting metal-coated thread laid in a diamond pattern are applied by hand to the components in perfect alignment, creating a three-dimensional effect. To secure this extraordinary veneer, each component is cured for one hour under pressure at 100°C. This is then sand-blasted to create a keyed surface for six layers of lacquer, which is hand-sanded and polished before being incorporated into the motor car.

If specified in the client’s commission, the Technical Fibre ‘Waterfall’ section of the individual rear seats receives the Black Badge family motif: the mathematical symbol that represents potential infinity known as a Lemniscate. Rendered in aerospace-grade aluminium on the lid of Black Badge Ghost’s Champagne cooler, it is applied between the third and fourth layer of a total of six layers of subtly tinted lacquer, creating the illusion that the symbol is floating above the Technical Fibre veneer.

2021 Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost interior

Aesthetes from the marque’s design team elected to further enhance the noir ambience of Black Badge Ghost by subduing the brightwork. Air vent surrounds on the dashboard and in the rear cabin are darkened using physical vapour deposition, one of the few methods of colouring metal that ensures parts will not discolour or tarnish over time or through repeated use. The Post Opulent principles of simplicity have also been applied to dramatic effect in the Black Badge Ghost timepiece design: only the tips of the hands and the twelve, three, six and nine o’clock markers are picked out, in a subdued chrome finish, creating a remarkably minimal clock. Additional timepieces are available within Black Badge Ghost to suit the client’s aesthetic preference.

The timepiece is flanked by a world-first Bespoke innovation that debuted with Ghost: the Illuminated Fascia, which displays an ethereal glowing Lemniscate, surrounded by more than 850 stars. Located on the passenger side of the dashboard, the constellation and motif are completely invisible when the interior lights are not in operation. As in Ghost, the Lemniscate motif is illuminated via 152 LEDs mounted above and beneath the fascia, each meticulously colour-matched to the cabin’s clock and instrument dial lighting. To ensure the Lemniscate is lit evenly, a 2mm-thick light guide is used, featuring more than 90,000 laser-etched dots across the surface. This not only disperses the light evenly but creates a twinkling effect as the eye moves across the fascia, echoing the subtle sparkle of the Shooting Star Starlight Headliner.

    ENGINEERING

Black Badge is not just an aesthetic – it is an experience. The clients who requested this motor car demanded that the Bespoke treatment of Black Badge Ghost extend from the design atelier into the marque’s engineering department. In doing so, the Bespoke Collective of designers, engineers and craftspeople collaborated to create a vivid driving personality that matched Black Badge Ghost’s visual intent without compromising the marque’s effortless ride proclivities and exhaustive acoustic tuning.

Key to its potent character is the Architecture of Luxury, Rolls-Royce’s proprietary all-aluminium spaceframe architecture that debuted with Phantom. This sub-structure not only delivers extraordinary body stiffness, but its flexibility and scalability allowed Ghost to be equipped with all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and the award-winning Planar Suspension system. For Black Badge, these peerless engineering qualities have been comprehensively re-engineered, including the fitting of more voluminous air springs to alleviate body roll under more assertive cornering.

The capacity of the Rolls-Royce twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V12 engine was deemed sufficient. However, the flexibility of this celebrated power plant has been exploited to generate an extra 29PS, creating a total output of 600PS. The sense of a single infinite gear has also been dramatised with the addition of a further 50NM of torque, for a total of 900NM. The powertrain has also received Bespoke transmission and throttle treatments to further enhance the engine’s increased power reserves. The ZF eight-speed gear box and both front- and rear-steered axles work collaboratively to adjust the levels of feedback to the driver, depending on throttle and steering inputs.

2021 Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost Engine

As with all products in the marque’s Black Badge portfolio, the ‘Low’ button situated on the gear selection stalk unlocks Black Badge Ghost’s full suite of technologies. This is asserted by the amplification of the motor car’s engine through an entirely new exhaust system, subtly announcing its potency. All 900NM of torque is available from just 1700rpm and, once underway in Low Mode, gearshift speeds are increased by 50% when the throttle is depressed to 90%, delivering Black Badge Ghost’s abundant power reserves with dramatic immediacy.

To bolster confidence when exploiting Black Badge Ghost, the braking bite point has been raised and pedal travel decreased. Non-Black Badge Ghost is provisioned with a robust braking hardware package that was deemed more than ample under extreme conditions, even accounting for the Black Badge alter ego’s increased power output. However, a new suite of bold high-temperature brake calliper paint colours has been developed in preparation for forthcoming Black Badge Ghost commissions.

Black Badge Ghost is available to commission now.

  • Rolls-Royce Ghost Extended

    2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announce new Ghost Extended, offering the indulgence of enhanced rear seating space with no compromise to Ghost’s driving dynamics. Ghost Extended is the product of an exhaustive process of consultation with a new generation of Rolls-Royce clients. This global, highly dynamic group of entrepreneurs expressed a desire for a chauffeur-driven business tool for the week that can transform into a serenely comfortable and dynamic self-driven saloon at the weekend. Ghost Extended is the response. The first customer deliveries will be made in the fourth quarter of 2020.

    DESIGN

Ghost Extended offers 170mm more space than Ghost, providing more rear legroom than any four-seat sedan with the exception of a Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended. Customer centricity has informed every step of the development process. A key learning was that Ghost Extended customers wanted no compromise to Ghost’s pure, minimalist design. The marque’s designers worked to cloak the extra length by only extending the rear door and body around the rear door apertures, preserving the lines of the car.

    TECHNOLOGY

    Rear Suite Serenity

A suite of enhancements to the rear of the cabin reflects Ghost Extended’s flexibility. For the first time, a reclining Serenity Seat can be selected, offering a new dimension of rear-seat comfort akin to a business jet cabin environment.

The rear cabin also provides the perfect environment to transition from business to leisure. To enhance this, a Champagne fridge is provided between the rear seats and has been developed with exacting attention to the needs of the Rolls-Royce client. To achieve this, the marque’s engineers consulted with a Master Sommelier. They learned that the optimum serving temperatures of non-vintage Champagne is around six degrees centigrade and vintage Champagnes is around 11 degrees centigrade. To that end, the refrigerator operates two cooling modes, chilling to six degrees and 11 degrees.

    Technology Without Obtrusion

Ghost is the most technologically advanced Rolls-Royce ever created. For Ghost Extended’s entrepreneurial customers, access to WiFi, and cutting-edge infotainment systems is essential for use during the business day. However, technological functions have been deployed with care to reflect customer demand for a serene environment, free from unnecessary distractions.

The commitment to delivering a pure, detoxifying space extends to the air within the cabin. To deliver this, Ghost is equipped with a new Micro-Environment Purification System (MEPS). This technology enhances existing air filtration systems through software and hardware. Highly sensitive Impurity Detection Sensors detect ambient air quality, automatically activating fresh air intakes into Recirculation Mode. If unacceptable levels of airborne contaminants are detected, the air is passed through a nanofleece filter that is capable of removing nearly all ultra-fine particles within the cabin in less than two minutes.

A suite of technologies enhances the driving experience in urban and country settings. This includes laser headlights with more than 600m of illuminated range and key safety enhancements including vision assist with day and night-time wildlife and pedestrian warning; alertness assistant; a four-camera system with panoramic view, all round-visibility and helicopter view; active cruise control; collision warning; cross-traffic warning; lane departure and lane change warning. An industry-leading 7×3 high definition head-up display and self-park ensure absolute effortlessness whatever the driving conditions.

    ENGINEERING

All-Aluminium Spaceframe and New V12 Engine
Ghost Extended is built on the Architecture of Luxury, Rolls-Royce’s proprietary all-aluminum spaceframe that underpins every new Rolls-Royce model. The marque’s hallmark Magic Carpet Ride is delivered by a new Planar Suspension System, the result of more than 10 years’ exhaustive testing and refinement by specialist engineers. Featuring continuously variable, electronically controlled shock absorbers, self-leveling high-volume air strut assemblies, and a world-first upper wishbone damper; this technology has never been previously applied to a production motor car. Ghost Extended also benefits from all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering for the first time.

Power is provided by a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged engine developed exclusively for Ghost. It produces 571PS and 850Nm of torque. The requirement for silence when traveling is answered through 100kg of acoustic damping materials incorporated into the chassis, bodywork, and tires, delivering exhilarating performance without disturbing the serenity within.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS

    Simplicity Through Complexity
The pursuit of design simplicity requires highly complex engineering and craft techniques. For example, sophisticated bodywork forms are only achievable through advanced generative design and 3D printing. This is the first time this technology has been incorporated within a component production facility and combined with Rolls-Royce’s craft and engineering competencies.

For Ghost Extended, beam-melted metal components are welded to the body-in-white, while parts made by multi-jet fusion and selective laser sintering are individually fitted at the Home of Rolls-Royce.

More traditional craft is given a contemporary expression through the introduction of two new wood finishes, developed especially for Ghost. Obsidian Ayous is inspired by the rich palette of colors found in igneous rocks, while Dark Amber has veins of fine aluminum particles running through the wood. Both are available in open-pore finish, allowing the tactility of the material to fully express itself.

  • Rolls-Royce with a ‘dark and edgy’ presence on the famous Hillclimb

Rolls-Royce Wraith Black Badge and Ghost Black Badge front viewRolls-Royce to reveal two Black Badge special editions

This year Rolls-Royce is about to reveal two special editions at Goodwood. They come rather unexpectedly and what’s even more impressive is the additional power added to their output. Based on the Wraith and Ghost, both limited edition vehicles carry the name Black Badge and share many similarities. With its uncompromised presence they evoke dark and edgy thoughts, but at the same time bring about the calm feeling of safety and affluence.

The name of the exterior color of both cars, Black Badge, brings about more assertive, but demanding aesthetics. I can even say that it somehow has a transformative effect on the appearance and essence of the Wraith and Ghost, which I’m very fond of. It seems that the color plays with the subconscious and the reason is probably the specific way of laying the paint. Precisely, multiple layers of paint and lacquer have been repeatedly applied and then hand polished. Since this is a solid color, the effect ends being deep, dark and extremely intense.

SEE ALSO: Rolls-Royce Black Badge: Taken to the Extremes

What’s common between both models (beside the exterior paint finish) is the facia inside which comes in what Rolls-Royce calls “aerospace-grade aluminium-threaded carbon fibre composite surfacing”. Moreover, both models have been specifically built for the event. Other cool features include “Spirit of Ecstasy” in high-gloss black vamp as well as Double R “inverted” badges and the 21-inch carbon alloys. The traditional chrome surfaces have been turned dark: take a look at the front grille surround, boot lid finisher, lower air inlet finisher and exhaust pipes.

    Wraith Black Badge

Rolls-Royce Wraith Black Badge and Ghost Black Badge side view

This luxury model will go for a Supercar Run up the hill and in between Hillclimbs in the Supercar Paddock. Its torque has been enhanced with 70 Nm, while the horses stay the same, 642 hp (465 kW). More spirited driving is ensured by the custom air suspension and upgraded gearbox. On the inside, Wraith Black Badge is adorned by Black and Mugello Red leather.

    Ghost Black Badge

This one will be Rolls-Royce’s Course Car. The Ghost Black Badge benefits from a power increase too: it packs an additional 40 hp and 60 Nm, making a total of 603 hp (450 kW). More upgrades have been made to the 8-speed automatic transmission and to the interior, which comes in special Black and Cobalto Blue contrast leather.

And if you happen to be at Goodwood, make sure to use the hashtag #BlackBadge when tweeting Rolls-Royce content. You might get noticed.

  • DMC Releases Rather Strange “LOVE” Rolls-Royce Ghost SaRangHae

DMC Rolls Royce Ghost SaRangHae Front View DMC has just tuned a Rolls-Royce Ghost, which eventually received a very special name and was commissioned for a very important person. It seems that the (so called) “stars” of the East like to dwell and be transported in luxurious limousines… but hey, who doesn’t? The difference between us and them is of course the money, and when it comes to $cash$ many seem to brake loose. Vanity comes in many forms and almost always affects the personal accessories.

The case with this gorgeous white Rolls-Royce Ghost is pretty much described above. The star for whom it was commissioned is the so called The Asia Prince or Jang Keun Suk, a Korean based singer, who obviously has some resources to spend. And things quickly escalate, when one understands that the car has been named with the pompous “SaRangHae” (사랑해), meaning literally “love”.

SEE ALSO: DMC Shows Winged Huracan LP610 Cairo Edition

Whether “the strongest feeling of all” is the best name for such project, I would rather remain silent. A very pleasant fact about this car is that the DMC tuners did not overdo it, meaning that they kept the “job” simple.

DMC Rolls Royce Ghost SaRangHae Rear View

And so it is. We only see minor trim changes on the front fascia, straight lined skirt in line with the original design at the sides, and a rear with a brand new trunk spoiler and diffuser. Good news is that under the hood the modifications have been stronger, thanks to the ECU tuning and high performance exhaust system.

Due to these changes, the twin turbo V12 adds the substantial 70 PS and 80 Nm, making it possible for the Rolls-Royce produce a total of 650 HP and to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The top speed was increased to 295 KM/H.

New shiny and huge wheels are almost preliminary, especially when it comes to “star”-tuning. The 24-inched diamond forged rims fitted with Pirelli tires here carry the DMC Rolls-Royce Ghost SaRangHae. For this size, the tuners actually had to modify in the wheel housings to ensure a continued smooth ride and steering ability. (But let me reveal you a practical matter: bigger wheels won’t make you look cooler, so keep that in mind).

Although Jang Keun Suk did not allow DMC to publish the interior (which I’m sure will be as magniloquent as possible), they disclosed that was adorned with Italian leathers, rare materials like Sting Ray and a lot of carbon fiber. Nothing surprisingly unusual.

If you dig this project, then the videos below will show you more about it. Enjoy!

  • Rolls-Royce Dedicates Special Edition Ghost to Eternal Love

Rolls-Royce Ghost Eternal Love Edition Exterior Called Eternal Love Edition, this Rolls-Royce Ghost comes to pay tribute to the white swan. The new and rather strange variant of the model was introduced to the Chinese market. And since it is Valentine’s Day in less than a week, it was the perfect time to show something more romantic and creative… even is it is a Rolls-Royce Ghost.

Why it takes inspiration to the White Swan? The reason is that in China these birds are viewed as “love birds” due to their unending love. Could it be more romantic than that? Basically this is the main design theme of the exterior and interior, which you can view in HD in the gallery below.

SEE ALSO: Jade Pearl Rolls-Royce Phantom is One-Off and Truly Original

On the outside, this limited edition model carries English White and Silver Satin two-tone paint finish. There is also a coach-line that shows two swans making the form of a heart. The same symbolism is featured throughout the interior. The car rides on 20-inch silver alloys.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Eternal Love Edition Interior

Speaking of the interior, this Ghost includes Seashell leather upholstery and the same motif of heart-shaped swans on the leather seatbacks. In addition, the headliner is finished in Hotspur Red. And since not so many speak fluently Chinese, here’s a little hint: on the custom tread-plates is written “Love is Eternity”. One of the pictures also shows that the interior includes a bespoke clock on the Tudor Oak wood panel.

Just like any other Ghost, this one is driven by the 6.6-liter V12 biturbo engine, which produces 563 horsepower (414 kW) and 780 Nm (575 pound-feet) of torque. The unit is mated to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Eternal Love Edition is limited to sixteen examples and will be distributed in China only.

Rolls-Royce-Ghost-Series-II-THUMBToday is the beginning of the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show, where the luxury brand Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled its brand new Ghost Series II. The car is fitted with the latest technologies and has a subtle re-design which keeps the popularity of Ghost’s iconic presence.

First of all, at the front the new model sports re-sculpted LED headlights encircled by daytime running lights. This gives the car more dynamic visual appearance. In addition, the new headlights blend perfectly with revised surface treatments to the front of the car.

The interior of the model delivers modern combination of luxury, technology and connectivity. II Series onboard technology features on-board Wi-Fi, Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT), which ensures the car automatically adapts to its surroundings, updated navigation system and car/user interface, an optional Bespoke Audio.
