In 2023 the first MINI “born in Germany” will roll off the assembly lines at BMW Group Plant Leipzig. Following a decision by the BMW Group, production of the all-new successor to the current MINI Countryman will be contracted out to the facility in Saxony, making it the BMW Group’s first German site to produce both BMW and MINI vehicles. As it will be manufacturing both the combustion and electric powered versions of the forthcoming MINI crossover, Plant Leipzig has been the subject of an investment programme to ensure suitable expansion of its production capacity, including e-drive component assembly.
The realignment of the MINI product portfolio will see the brand strengthen its commitment to electromobility and the crossover segment, which continues to grow around the world. The successor to the popular MINI Countryman will come with a choice of front or all-wheel drive, with highly efficient petrol or diesel engines, or an all-electric drive. BMW Group Plant Leipzig will launch production of the forthcoming generation of crossovers for the premium compact segment in 2023.
“Over the last few years, we have worked continuously to lead our plant into a successful future. This contract to produce the successor to the MINI Countryman gives us another major milestone to work towards,” says Hans-Peter Kemser, Director of BMW Group Plant Leipzig. “It is clear evidence of the company’s faith in our expertise and our site, and fantastic news for the future of our plant.”
Since opening in 2005, Plant Leipzig has constantly increased its production capacity. The latest investment programme to reach completion comprised extensions and upgrades to the body and paint shops, assembly and logistics, and totalled around €300 million. With production capacity now at more than 350,000 units per year, BMW Group Plant Leipzig has the best possible prerequisites for expanding its product portfolio to include the new MINI model.
Thanks to its extremely flexible production processes, BMW Group Plant Leipzig will be able to deliver a wide variety of drives for the next generation of the MINI Countryman. Since launching production of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer in 2014, it has become the pilot plant for BMW’s state-of-the-art front-wheel drive architecture. It currently manufactures the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, and both the front- and all-wheel drive variants of the new BMW 1 Series.
The site in Saxony is also the birthplace of BMW Group electromobility. Since 2013, it has manufactured over 200,000 all-electric BMW i3 (fuel consumption combined: 0.0 l/100 km; electricity consumption combined: 13.1 kWh/100 km; CO 2 emissions combined: 0 g/km) and BMW i3s (fuel consumption combined: 0.0 l/100 km; electricity consumption combined: 14.6 – 14 kWh/100 km; CO 2 emissions combined: 0 g/km) vehicles.
In the years ahead, the team’s experience in electromobility will be even more important, as a further investment of more than €100 million is now adding an assembly facility for e-drive components to BMW Group Plant Leipzig. Due to go on stream as early as 2021, the new facility will make Plant Leipzig a member of the BMW Group’s international production network for high-voltage batteries. It will cover an area of some 10,000 square metres and run a highly automated process to assemble lithium-ion cells brought in from suppliers into standardised battery modules. These will then be combined to create model-specific battery packs for BMW and MINI cars. Therefore the electrified variants of the forthcoming successor to the current MINI Countryman will be made in Leipzig and fitted with locally assembled battery modules.
The new 2.2-liter Korando crossover will proudly show some value raise with new features as fresh 18-inch diamond cut alloys, sat nav & sidesteps. There are also some new exterior colors: White, Metallic Black and Galaxy Green.
Enthusiasts know that this one is geared with diesel Euro6-compliant power unit and offers two-wheel drive with either a six-speed manual or Aisin 6-speed automatic gearbox. Sweet. Furthermore, there is a newly-developed e-XDi220 diesel engine that meets the requirements of many SsangYong fans out there and offers 178hp (132kW) and 400Nm of torque. And provided that it offers some reduced CO2 emissions, compared to older models, we tend to believe that enthusiasts will be satisfied. Or maybe no?
And now the special part. The exterior is reshaped by the Italian styling house Giugiaro and features clear lines, glass direction indicators, piano black grille and noticeable 18-inch diamond cut alloys. In terms of interior, there is a 7-inch high-resolution touch screen with audio streaming and link to the rear camera. Also present is a TomTom navigation system, USB memory slot, Aux port and HDMI port.
Frankly, I do not like the ambience in the cabin. It might be comfortable and functional, but I can’t accept it: maybe because of the big wooden thing before the front passenger seat, or because SsangYong tried to imitate the clean and beautiful design of super-premium vehicles. However, I’d like to know your opinion, written in the comment section below.

Furthermore, BMW is going to offer a larger number of surfaces painted in body colour. Chrome touches can be seen on the side edging of the Control Display. Next, the air vent surrounds are made in high-gloss black surface.

More available technologies included in the crossover are Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems, which use small camera installed behind the windshield. The camera detects lane markers in front of the vehicle, calculate its position relative to those lane markers and help warn the driver of a potential unintended lane departure with a visual indicator and audible signal.
Next comes the Blind Spot Warning (BSW) system, which illuminates an indicator light if another vehicle is detected in the blind spot area. In addition, there is also a Blind Spot Intervention™ (BSI) system. The latter provides selective braking if the vehicle approaches an adjacent lane while another vehicle is detected in the blind spot area to help the driver return the vehicle back toward the center of the lane of travel.
The advanced system, named Intelligent Cruise Control (Full-Speed Range), is another innovation included in the JX. It uses a combination of laser sensors, throttle and brake actuators. The JX’s braking system, measures the distance to the vehicle ahead and automatically adjusts the speed to help maintain a pre-selected following distance.
The Distance Control Assist (DCA) intuitively prompts the driver to release the throttle and applies the brakes in slowing traffic. Along with it are also being offered: Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and front Pre-Crash Seat Belts.
The 2013 Infiniti JX’s has a full range of standard safety features which comprises of: an Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt and occupant classification sensors; roof-mounted curtain side impact supplemental air bags with rollover sensor for outboard occupant head protection for all three rows; front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags; 3-point front seat belts with pretensioners, load limiters and seat belt reminder; 3-point seat belts for all rear seat occupants (including center position); LATCH System (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren), Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones and steel side-door guard beams.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) comes as a standard and it features an individual tire pressure display and Tire Inflation Indicator. It serves to maintain proper tire pressure, thus handling performance, fuel economy and long tire life.
At last, there is also a Remote Engine Start System included, which allows the driver the option of starting the JX distantly with the help of a remote keyless entry system.
More importantly however, is the fact that the vehicle is offered with Intelligent All-Wheel Drive. The standard 3.5-litre DOHC V6 is mated to a sport-tuned Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), thus providing high responsiveness and seamless, efficient shifting feel.
The engine is produces 265 hp (195 kW) @ 6,400 rpm and 336 Nm (248 lb-ft of torque) @ 4,400 rpm. The fuel economy is rated at 8.5 L/100km Highway, 11.5 L/100km City and a real-world 10.2 L/00km Combined.
Another feature is the Infiniti Drive Mode Selector, which utilizes a rotary switch mounted in the center console. With its help the driver can choose between four drive modes – Standard, Sport, Eco and Snow.
Moreover, JX’s braking system comprises of a 4-wheel vented disc design with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.
The crossover rides on 18-inch split 5-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with 235/65R18 T-rated all-season tires. Al this comes as a standard. Polished 20-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels are also available as an option. The JX os offered with an optional Premium Package, which consists of: Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System with 8-inch WVGA colour touch-screen display, Infiniti Voice Recognition, XM NavTraffic® with Real-Time Traffic Information, and Zagat Survey® Restaurant Guide, Streaming Audio via Bluetooth®, Infiniti Connection, Around View® Monitor with Moving Object Detection and front and rear sonar sensors, and Bose® 13-speaker Premium sound system with Acoustic Waveguide bass technology; dual occupant memory system front driver’s seat, steering wheel and outside mirrors, entry/exit assist for driver’s seat and steering wheel, Enhanced Intelligent Key, outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down feature, and auto-dimming inside mirror with HomeLink® Universal Transceiver.
And if the customer chooses the Deluxe Touring Package, they will add to their JX the following equipment: Bose® Cabin Surround® 15-speaker sound system with digital 5.1-channel decoding and Acoustic Waveguide bass technology, Maple interior accents, 20-inch split 5-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with 235/55R20 tires, panoramic moonroof with power rear sunshade, Advanced Climate Control System (ACCS) with auto recirculation, Plasmacluster™ air purifier and Grape Polyphenol Filter, climate-controlled front seats, and heated 2nd row outboard seats.
Another option being offered is the Driver Assistance Package, which will enrich the vehicle with the following characteristics: Backup Collision Intervention (BCI), Intelligent Cruise Control (Full Speed Range), Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Blind Spot Warning (BSW) system, Distance Control Assistance (DCA), Active Trace Control, Eco Pedal, heated steering wheel and remote engine start.
At last, but not least comes the Technology Package which includes all of the features of the Driver Assistance Package, as well as Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems, Blind Spot Intervention™ (BSI) system and front Pre-Crash Seatbelts.
The all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala full-size sedan will debut at this year’s New York International Auto Show which is going to take place next month. Chevrolet is also going to exhibit a transformed version of the 2013 Cehvrolet Traverse crossover utility vehicle. The only information that we have about those models are these two exclusively released teaser pictures, showing just a little peace of the vehicles. The new Impala model will further empower Chevrolet’s passenger car lineup by offering consumers a full-size sedan. In fact, Impala has been one of Chevrolet’s best-selling models since 1958. The all-new version of the Impala builds on that heritage.
On the other hand the refreshed 2013 Chevrolet Traverse was designed to deliver to families a new gathering space. It includes elements of style and refinement both inside and outside. It is also going to offer new and industry-exclusive safety features. Moreover Traverse model is among the safest vehicles on the road today. In this 2013 model, Chevrolet has added to the Traverse industry’s first front center air bag, which is engineered to protect drivers and front passengers in far-side impact crashes. What basically happens is that the air bag deploys in milliseconds and inflates between the driver and front passenger, providing added protection for both front occupants. Furthermore, the new edition of the crossover offers a wide variety of improvements in terms of ride and handling, interior materials and exterior styling.
2013 Mazda CX-5 is the all new production vehicle offered by Mazda Motor Corporation. The compact crossover SUV will arrive this spring in dealerships and moreover will be equipped with a range of breakthrough technologies. The SUC was designed to appeal to the corporate sector and some of the technologies included in it for the first time. Such are safety features as Smart City Brake Support, state-of-the-art passive safety structures, lightweight yet highly-rigid SKYACTIV-Body and various impact-absorbing structural innovations.
First, the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) helps the driver to avoid or minimise the impact of a frontal collision when driving at low speeds, for instance when in traffic. The technology is standard across the Mazda CX-5 range. In particular it uses a laser sensor mounted at the top of the windscreen to detect a vehicle or obstacle in front. And in case the driver fails to slow their vehicle appropriately, the SCBS automatically activates the brakes and reduces the engine output at the same time. Thus, the system helps avoiding collision or mitigating the damage from rear-end collisions at low speeds.
Secondly, Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology is featured for the first time on the vehicle. In fact, it is the first sixth generation model, and promises major total cost of ownership due to major fuel savings and low emissions.
Next, Mazda has developed a straighter and more continuous frame and an extremely efficient multi-load path structure for the SKYACTIV-Body of the vehicle in the event of a crash. The structure efficiently absorbs the load at the time of a crash by dispersing it in multiple directions.
