  • 2013 Geneva Motor Show: Audi A3 Sportback g-Tron

Audi is currently exhibiting the new A3 Sportback g-Tron at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The ultra-efficient hatchback boasts incredibly low fuel consumption and awesome range.

The A3 Sportback g-Tron has two gas tanks which can carry up to 7 kg (15.3 lbs) of compressed natural gas (CNG) at a maximum pressure of 200 bar. Despite the huge pressure, the car is perfectly safe, because the tanks are manufactured from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). What is more, they weight only 27 kg (59.5 lbs) – each, when they are full.

The engine is a 1.4 liter TFSI with 110HP (81 kW) and 200Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque. 0-100 km/h in 11 seconds and a top speed of 190 km/h (118 mph). Although the performance is not great, the car consumes 3.5 kg / 100 km and provides a range of around 400 km (242 miles) on CNG and another 900 km (559 miles) on gasoline. This means an impressive range of 1,300 km.

  • Audi A3 Sportback g-tron Supports Renewable Energies

Audi-A3-Sportback-g-tron-THUMBAfter the recent introduction of 2014 Audi A3 e-tron the brand is now ready to enter the A3 Sportback g-tron. The latter is a compact five-door car, powered by the CO2-neutral fuel Audi e-gas. This new Audi vehicle innovatively combines ecological balance, economy and high-tech solutions.

To go further into details, the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron is equipped with the full gamut of company’s technology expertise. Starting from ultra-lightweight technology, and infotainment, and ending with the driver assistance systems. However, what is the most important feature here is the state-of-the-art CNG drive technology, with included fuel storage.

The fuel storage has two tanks under the luggage compartment floor. Each of them can hold seven kilograms (15.43 lb) of CNG at a maximum 200 bar pressure. At the same time each tank weighs 27 kilograms (59.52 lb) less than its conventional counterpart.

Even more, the tanks consist of a new type of matrix, where the inner layer comprises of gas-impermeable polyamide polymer, while the second layer – of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) that gives the tank its extremely high strength. In addition, the third layer is made of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP), which provides rugged protection against damage from the outside. High-strength epoxy resin is used to bind the fiber reinforced materials.

Another highlight in the A3 Sportback g-tron is the electronic gas pressure regulator, which is compact and lightweight and therefore reduces the high pressure of the gas flowing from the cylinders down to around five to nine bar in two stages.

For instance, if the pressure in the tank drops below ten barr, the engine management system automatically switches over to gasoline operation. The model is fully bivalent, this means that its performance figures are identical in CNG and gasoline modes.

Furthermore, the CNG provides a range of around 400 km (248.55 miles), with gasoline providing another 900 km (559.23 miles). All in all, the total range is approximately on a par with an Audi TDI.

The information of the fuel level is visible on two displays in the instrument cluster. The driver information system also displays the current fuel consumption based on the particular operating mode.

The engine under the hood of this Audi is based on the new 1.4 TFSI, which develops 110 hp (81 kW) and 200 Nm of torque. Key modifications relate to the cylinder head, turbocharging, injection system, and the catalytic converter.

The Vmax here is 190 km/h (118.06 mph), with an acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h (0 – 62.14 mph) in 11 seconds. Additionally, the fuel consumption here is also impressive: the five-door car consumes on average less than 3.5 kilograms per 100 km of CNG or Audi e-gas – the fuel that is generated from eco-electricity in the Audi e-gas project. CO2 tailpipe emissions are less than 95 grams per km (152.89 g/mile) in gas mode.

What is more attractive however, is the greenhouse gas balance in a well-to-wheel analysis that accounts for all factors from the fuel source to the car’s wheels. When the A3 Sportback g-tron is powered by Audi e-gas, no more CO2 is released. Buyers of the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron will presumably obtain the e-gas at the public CNG refueling stations via an ecological accounting¬ method.

This so called e-gas project makes Audi the first automobile manufacturer to develop an entire chain of sustainable energy carriers. The start of the chain has electricity produced from renewable energy sources and the end products are hydrogen and the synthetic Audi e-gas.

What is more, the construction of the world’s first industrial plant to produce synthetic methane (e-gas) from CO2 and renewable electricity is almost complete in Werlte in Germany. The Audi e-gas plant will make a way for tapping into the natural-gas network with its huge capacity as storage and transport system for hitherto excess electricity capacity.

The CO2 used in Audi’s e-gas plant is a waste ¬product from a nearby biogas plant, operated by power utility EWE. The CO2, which would otherwise pollute the atmosphere, is chemically bonded into the fuel at the Audi e-gas plant. In addition, it is expected that the e-gas plant will annually produce about 1 000 metric tons of e-gas and will chemically bind some 2,800 metric tons of CO2.

In other words, the CO2-neutral e-gas derived from the plant will be able to power 1 500 new Audi A3 Sportback g-tron vehicles every year. The electricity-gas technology is an aim to significantly foster the expansion of renewable energies.

  • 2014 Audi A3 e-tron Delivers Efficiency And Innovation

2014-Audi-A3-e-tron-THUMB2014 Audi A3 e-tron which will have a premiere in Geneva has an “electrified” drivetrain thanks to a plug-in hybrid technology. With 150 kW (204 hp) of system power and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of system torque, sporty performance is guaranteed.

Further details are that the car has a top speed of 222 km/h (137.94 mph), and sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.6 seconds. The five-door model consumes on average just 1.5 liters of fuel per 100 km and has CO2 emissions of 35 grams per km (56.33 g/mile).

When it operates in electric mode, the Audi A3 e-tron reaches a top speed of 130 km/h (80.78 mph) and has a maximum range of 50 km (31.07 miles). The combustion engine is a modified 1.4 TFSI that generates 110 kW (150 hp).

Moreover, a clutch links the TFSI to an electric motor with an output of 75 kW. The latter is integrated into a newly designed six-speed e-S tronic, which sends the power to the front wheels. It is important to mention that both motors work in cooperation. The electric one deliver a peak torque that starts from around 2000 rpm, and the TFSI’s maximum pulling power is available in a range from 1,750 to 4,000 rpm.

Of course, this Audi model can be driven with just the combustion engine, just the electric drive or in hybrid mode. In addition, the driver can choose to have both powerplants active at the same time (“boosting”). On the other hand when he or she lets up on the accelerator, they both deactivate temporarily (“gliding”) thus motor braking torque is eliminated and efficiency is enhanced.

  • 2013 Audi A3 Sportback – €22,500

Audi has released full details about the new 2013 A3 Sportback. The compact five-door model with the spacious luggage compartment breaks new ground in terms of vehicle weight thanks to ultra-lightweight construction technology. The engines are powerful and efficient. The infotainment and driver assistance systems available in the new A3 Sportback set new standards in the premium compact segment.

The new Audi A3 Sportback is long and lean – length 4,310 mm, width 1,780 mm and height 1,425 mm. This  are only slightly greater than on the previous model, the wheelbase now measures 2,636 mm (8.65 ft), an increase of 58 millimeters (2.28 in). This makes the five-door model 35 mm (1.38 in) longer between the axles than the three-door version.

As a result of these dimensions, the passengers get some more legroom, a boot space of 380 liters and 1220 liters, when rear seats folded down.

The design with the three side windows is taut and concentrated, with every detail precise and expressive. The distinguishing element at the front of the vehicle is the distinctive, stone gray single-frame grille with the angled upper corners. The lower edges of the flat headlights taper off at an angle. Audi offers optional xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights, with LED headlights to follow somewhat later. Large air intakes up front hint at the power of the engines.

The new A3 Sportbck is coming with a choice of one TDI and two TFSI engines.

The 1.6 TDI is the most efficient engine in the model lineup. It can average just 3.8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (61.90 US mpg) when paired with the manual transmission. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 99 g/km (159.33 g/mile). 0-100 km/h in 10.9 seconds and a top speed of 194 km/h (121 mph).

The other more powerful diesel will be available later next year, the 2.0 TDI has 184HP (135 kW) and 380Nm (280 lb-ft). 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 232 km/h (144 mph). The average fuel consumption is 4.3 liters per 100 km (54.70 US mpg) and 111 grams CO2 per km.

    The petrol range includes a new 1.4 TFSI – 122HP (90 kW) and 200Nm (148 lb-ft). 0-100 km/h in 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 203 km/h (126 mph). The average fuel consumption is excellent – 5.3 liters / 100 km with 123 grams of CO2/km.

The same engine has a second more powerful version – 140HP (103 kW) and 250Nm (184 lb-ft). It features the innovative cylinder on demand (COD) system, which deactivates the second and third cylinders at low to intermediate loads and while coasting. Average fuel consumption is 4.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (50.05 US mpg) with CO2 emissions are just 110 grams per. Performance is sporty, with a time of 8.4 seconds for the standard sprint (with manual transmission) and a top speed of 213 km/h (132.35 mph).

The new 1.8 TFSI, the most powerful gasoline engine in the lineup, produces 180HP (132 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. It combines FSI direct injection with indirect injection and uses the Audi valvelift system to vary valve lift as required. The exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head – a similar solution is also used in the two smaller TFSI engines. Key performance data with S tronic and front-wheel drive: from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.3 seconds, top speed of 232 km/h (144.16 mph) and average fuel consumption of 5.6 liters per 100 km (42.00 US mpg) corresponding to 130 grams CO2 per km.

The 2013 Audi A3 Sportback is scheduled to hit the German market in February next year. The base model with the 1.2-liter TFSI starts at 22,500 EURO.

  • Review of Audi A3

German car manufacturer Audi has released a new version of their A3 model in 2012 with their idiosyncratic style and panache. The badge itself will stir interest from their diehard fans but how well equipped is the model for the run of the mill car owner?

First of all let’s look at the price; the newest model comes in at around upward of £20,000. When visiting the Audi website, you may be inclined to add a couple of their added extras, whilst the manufacturer has always offered the most luxurious of extras, adding on just a couple could see the price soar.

Fortunately for buyers, a new model always means used car prices fall. This is not, though, good news for those looking to sell a used Audi A3. If you are looking to buy or sell, make sure you do so through legitimate sales platforms, used car reviews are always thorough enough to paint a fairly detailed portrait of what’s on sale.

    2012 Audi A3 2.0 TFSI S-Line
    2012 Audi A3 2.0 TFSI S-Line

The exterior design is as sleek and stylish as ever with a sharper body and slimmer headlights. Although a little wider, the new model is substantially lighter than its predecessor making it far more energy efficient.

The Multi Media Interface comes as standard with all new Audi models and the A3 is no exception. A slim touch screen appears from within the dashboard that allows the user to control anything from music to air conditioning.

With regards to room there is a lot to give in the front seat of the new Audi. A little less can be said about the back seats but there shouldn’t be too much discomfort, even for adults. The boot space in the new hatch back has grown to 365 cubic litres from the previous 350. It may not seem like much, but it can really make the difference if you are part of a large family.

All in all, the new A3 is a very smooth ride, although some test drivers have claimed its gear change to be a little sticky as well as the steering to be somewhat heavy handed for a small family car. Its CO2 emissions make it a lot more economical in terms of car tax and its agronomical design and weight loss add to reduced running costs.

The new A3 comes only in a 3 door model for now, so despite a large boot capacity, the family car owner may want to wait to see if a 5 door option is offered in the future.

  • Audi A3 Eset tuned by Vilner

Vilner has prepared a special promo car for ESET Bulgaria. The project is based on Audi A3, which was put on entire rebuild during two months in Vilner’s studio.

ESETs wish was that the corporate colors are kept on the car. It started with a design project of the exterior and interior. In the course of the work, all the modified bumpers were removed – the aim was to keep the vision of the A3 at the maximum, so that the emphasis remains largely on the colors and some elements of the exterior.

The main color of the car body is pearl white with gray-blue nuances. Red and turquoise were used primarily for the accents. The rims are new – MAK 17 “, and were also precisely lacquered in white and turquoise. The ESET logo appears on the front doors. The decorative grid in blue catches the attention to the new Hella headlights, the original stop lights were replaced by new InPros.

The interior features high-quality Nappa leather and Alcantara as the main color inside is black. Decorative white edges emphasize the seats and inlaid mats. The dashboard was also covered with Nappa and Alcantara and enriched by a precise turquoise seam. The steering wheel was given a new and ergonomic design, both handmade. The seams on the seats, the car door and inside the trunk do reflect the elements of a robot – the symbol of ESET. The same is printed on the bright Alcantara headliner.

The speedometers are new, and are on company’s colors. Samsung Android Galaxy was installed in the middle console, playing the role of a mobile office – it also shows the mapping of the front and rear camera. The metal was painted with matt turquoise, but purposely – it corresponds with the door elements, the gear change, and the dash air vents.

The car body is isolated and soundproofed, which ensures the full enjoyment of quality music Ground Zero and AudioSon processor.

  • 2012 Audi A3

The five-door 2012 Audi A3 includes a design which expresses sporty elegance. The xenon plus headlights are combined with LED daytime running lights. The single-frame grille element and the trims on the B-posts are painted in high-gloss black and the lower air inlets have chrome struts. The same sporty elegance can be seen as well in the interior. The instruments are coloured gray, and a flat-bottomed, leather sport steering wheel is available to, however as an option. In addition, the air vents are framed in black rings while the navigation system sports a high-gloss bezel. The vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission. In addition, a gear-change indicator in the driver information system complements the operating concept. The front-wheel drive A3 Sportback offers impressive luggage capacity that varies between 370 and 1,100 liters (13.07 and 38.85 cu ft).

More importantly, the engine lineup features range of eight powerplants – four gasoline and four diesel units. Of course, all are turbocharged four-cylinder units with direct injection and badged as TFSI and TDI. Audi has included the start-stop system as well; it works together with both the manual and the S tronic automatic transmissions. First, the entry-level gasoline engine is the 1.2 TFSI uses a substitution of turbocharging for displacement. The four-cylinder unit develops 77 kW (105 hp) and a hefty 175 Nm of torque (129.07 lb-ft) from its small displacement of 1,197 cc. However, when combined with the S tronic gives just 5.3 liters of fuel per 100 km (44.38 US mpg). Next, the most powerful gasoline engine is the 2.0 TFSI with whole 147 kW (200 hp). Furthermore, the diesel range extends from the 1.6 TDI which develops 66 kW (90 hp) to the 2.0 TDI with an output of 125 kW (170 hp). If you wonder which is the most efficient engine in the range, well it is the 1.6-liter TDI which delivers the 77 kW (105 hp). The most fuel-efficient version of the A3 Sportback consumes on average just 3.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (60.31 US mpg).

    2012 Audi A3 2.0 TFSI S line Front Angle

Engine lineup: 1.2 TFSI with 77 kW (105 hp); 1.4 TFSI with 92 kW (125 hp); 1.8 TFSI and 1.8 TFSI quattro with 118 kW (160 hp); 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI quattro with 147 kW (200 hp); 1.6 TDI with 66 kW (90 hp); 1.6 TDI with 77 kW (105 hp); 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TDI quattro with 103 kW (140 hp); 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TDI quattro with 125 kW (170 hp).

The diversity can also be found in the transmission lineup. Most engine versions in the A3 model series are paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Nonetheless, Audi offers many of the engines with the S tronic. In addition, depending on engine version, the dual-clutch transmission has six or seven speeds. At last, the seven-speed version uses dry clutches.

The chassis of the new 2012 Audi A3 expresses the sporty character of the car and yet supreme safety and a high level of comfort. It includes four-link rear suspension, which handles longitudinal and transverse forces independently. In front-wheel drive models, there is featured electronic stabilization program (ESP), which integrates an electronic differential lock. A conventional sport suspension and the taut S line sport suspension from quattro GmbH are also available.

An extensive range of high-end options include the adaptive light dynamic cornering light system for the xenon plus headlights, the high-beam assistant and the navigation system plus with MMI operating logic. In addition, there is also featured the park assist system.

  • Audi dominates ”Best cars of 2012″ Poll

2012-Audi-A1-thumbAudi has proved itself very popular within the German community which is rather unsurprising. This year, the German-based magazine ”Motor und sport” surveyed a six-digit number of people to determine the “Best Cars of 2012”. The thing is that many people that took part in the research were from other countries as well – The “Motor und sport” magazine has a fan base in more than 13 European countries, Brazil and China. These are all vague numbers and speculations but the fact remains that Audi is one of the most referred to car makes on the market today.

Gaining 37.9 percent of the participating votes, the Audi A1 is crowned victorious in the battle for the best small car segment. The A4/5 on the other hand, won the best mid-size car title with 24.9 percent of the votes cast.
