  • Attention George Jetson, Your Car is Ready

Not long ago the coolest automobiles were built in America and a good example was the Chrysler turbine. It is probably not entirely coincidental that Hanna-Barbera’s seminal animated TV show, the Jetsons, aired from 1962 to 1963 and the Chrysler Turbine premiered in 1963. True, the Jetson’s animated car flew but having a jet-like turbine in a ground based car seemed like a step in that direction.

From the viewpoint of engineers, the turbine engine’s smoothness and durability seemed to be a better alternative to the standard piston engine. It had few moving parts compared to piston engines, just a bunch of fan blades on a spinning shaft with one spark plug and no cooling system. It was a car manufacturers dream.

Chrysler built a few ordinary-looking prototype turbine cars in the ’50s, but for the pilot-program cars (1960s) an all-new, futuristic body was developed. The bodies were hand-built by the Italian company Carrozzeria Ghia and were shipped to Detroit for installation of the Chrysler-built turbine engine.

Chrysler built a total of 55 turbine cars between and 50 of these were made available for testing by 203 American families. Each family kept the car for three months and, as part of the deal, they recorded impressions and details in logbooks. The service guys at Earnhardt Dodge, told us that Chrysler actually had a elite team of mechanics on call who would fly out and fix the cars right away if anything went wrong.

Unfortunately, Chrysler’s Jetson-like turbine car never went into production.  The high cost was one reason. Back in the early 60s you could buy a perfectly fine, reliable V8-powered car for some $5000 or this “jet-engine” car that would have cost around $16,000. Big difference in price! They also had about the same performance; the turbine car was rated at 130 hp about the same as a Chrysler’s 318-cubic-inch V8. Gas mileage was the same on the highway, both would get some 19mpg. The major difference seemed to be mainlyprice.

  • The Ins and Outs of Window Graphics

Car window signs are designed to be installed on both the inside and outside of the window. It is a surprise to most drivers that signs which are seen on the outside of the car are designed to be installed on the inside of the car. The term “inside glass” is attached to these signs. Both outside and inside car window products can do the same things but the differences are discussed further below:

    Outside Glass Decals

Most of the time car owners purchase outside glass signage. If the sign is placed inside a tinted window it would be hard to see. Decals are applied with a strong adhesive but one that still allows for the driver to see through the design. Rear window decals are tricky for many drivers because they are afraid of the windshield wiper on the back window causing harm to the decal. It will not cause harm if it is used sparingly. Be sure to clean the decal so that dirt and grime does not buildup and might be something the wiper could catch and lift the decal off the window.

    Inside Glass Decals

Most “inside glass” customers are worried about theft or vandalism and even weather affecting the decals. The concerns are justified, but the one car sign not designed to last in weather is the window cling. The cling does not have adhesive and is the only product that demands to be place inside the vehicle facing out. Vandalism does not have a chance with “inside glass,” the only issue is the degree of the tint on the window. A strong tint takes away from the design showing.

  • How to Fit a Towbar to your Car Safely

Fitting a towbar to your car offers a convenient and useful method of increasing the capacity of your car. It can afford you the opportunity to fit things like tow bar mounted bike racks and it can also provide you with a means of towing anything from a small and convenient utility trailer to something considerably larger like a touring caravan. As such, it is important that your tow bar is fitted properly and safely to ensure that it remains safely in place.

A poorly fitted tow bar may come loose and if this occurs when you are towing something then not only can this lead to damage of the trailer and its contents but it could cause a serious accident on the road. The safety element of your tow bar and the trailer that you are towing is one of the most important reasons why you must ensure that it is fitted properly.

One factor to consider is the make and model of tow bar. Not all bars will fit your make and model of car so be certain that you are buying one appropriate to the car you drive. You may also find different types of fitting that are best suited to towing particular types of item. If you are looking to tow a large caravan, for example, then you may require different fitting than if you were towing a small utility trailer.

With a professional tow bar specialist you can get a tow bar fitted and be absolutely certain that it has been fitted correctly and safely. You can receive a guarantee not only for the parts used but also for the work that was required to fit the towbar itself. This means that not only can you drive away with a high quality and professional fitted tow bar but with the peace of mind that guaranteed work offers.

There are many reasons to consider having a tow bar fitted and there are good reasons to use a professional fitting service to complete the work for you too. By having the work done professionally you can enjoy peace of mind and confidence that the job will be done properly and effectively.

  • Danger of the Desert

As the unpredictable and often dangerous weather of the Dakar Rally once again reared its ugly head, it didn’t halt the fantastic progress of Team KTM’s bikes.

The hazardous weather conditions struck stage eleven of Dakar 2013, causing the stage to end early for both the trucks and cars. This news dealt a bitter blow to Toyota duo Giniel De Villiers and Dirk Von Zitzewitz, as they had developed an impressive lead before the stage met an abrupt end.

    When asked about the subject, a frustrates De Villiers said;

“The decision to take the times at CP1 does not go in our favour but that’s how it is so we’ll have to try again. Everything is feeling really good with the car, I’m happy with how I’m driving and Dirk is find us the right way to go. Today we had the chance to cut about 15 minutes off the gap between us and race leader Stephane (Peterhansel) and that would have increased the pressure on him.”

The decision to halt the stage also had a negative effect on the overall leaderboard, with Team Kamaz also being affected.

The trio of Eduard Nikolaev, Ayrat Mardeev and Andrey Karginov were making waves throughout and were setting a good time, that was until the stage was annulled.

    Nikolaev vented his frustration by saying;

“I’m sad that another stage at this Dakar has been cancelled because I come to race. Also at this Dakar the stages are very short so to lose another stage makes the distance we race even smaller. It seems that every year the race gets shorter and shorter and that is not something we are pleased about.”

The bike race didn’t suffer the same problems however, as Team KTM took advantage of stage eleven going ahead as planned, with the route between La Rioja and Fiambala giving debutant Kurt Caselli his second stage victory.

“Today is another stage win for the team and that’s always good. Things are looking better for the team then they were in the first week of the race. The start of the race was a little dodgy for us but things are starting to smooth out and we’re all feeling better.”

The victory wasn’t just a boost for Caselli, but it allowed team-mate and overall leader Cyril Depres the chance to increase his lead and the gap at the top of the leaderboard.

    Caselli’s victory made Depres extremely happy, who said;

“The stage was going okay for me but then for the final 60km I got a boost because my new team-mate Kurt Caselli picked up the pace. He was pushing like he does in his Baja races and thanks to him I was able to try and catch his rhythm. It was really helpful for me to ride with him because he really picked things up. The rhythm we had was not really the right way to ride when you are leading a race but it felt good so I went for it.”

  • Avoiding winter car accidents: How safe is your car?

Volvo C30 ElectricAdverse weather conditions can make driving in winter a risky business.

Ice on the roads causes skids and slippage, snowstorms impair vision and sub-zero temperatures can make your car become temperamental. You should always leave plenty of time to make any journeys and drive more slowly than usual in winter.

Leave plenty of space between you and other cars around you in case either you or they hit a patch of ice and skid. Be sure to check your car over frequently as you don’t want to be the cause of an accident.

All cars must be fitted with seatbelts in the front by law, and most will have them in the back too. If you have children or frequent passengers, be sure your car has a proper shoulder belt in the middle of the back seat rather than just a lap belt.

Airbags will cushion the impact of a collision but can be dangerous to children under 12 so always seat them in the back where possible.

If you are planning on buying a new car this winter look for one with additional safety features such as ABS, all-wheel drive and electronic stability control. Generally heavier cars are safer for the occupants than lighter ones so it can be worth upgrading if you have a family.

If you do still find yourself skidding remember to ease off on the pedals and steer gently into the skid to slow it down.

In poor weather it is vital to pay attention not only to your own driving but also to anticipate what other cars may do. Don’t ever get too close to another car if the roads are icy as you or they could easily skid and cause a collision.

Be especially wary of anyone driving at speed and remember that just because you drive safely doesn’t mean you are safe from other drivers.

Don’t let festive high spirits tempt you into having just one more drink for the road. Drink driving is dangerous at any time of year, but you especially need all your wits about you when the roads are iced over.

If you do find yourself a victim of someone else’s careless driving this winter and suffer whiplash or any other medical injury, my recommendation is to contact a leading medical solicitor .

  • Car buying trends 2012

2014 Ford FiestaWith less than a month remaining of 2012, the motoring industry is starting to reflect on what cars have proved to be the most popular with consumers looking for something new or used.  Whether customers want something new or a used Audi from VCARS.co.uk, in these austere times, they want value for money, and the fact that many new cars that have sold well are smaller, more efficient models shows how much people want to drive on the cheap.

Some of the most popular new cars sold in 2012 are small city cars and superminis. The Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa are two good examples. Given their size, they cost less to buy, but they tend to offer drivers much more in terms of savings than a lower price tag. Smaller cars use less petrol, which at a time when fuel is becoming more expensive by the day is very useful. Meanwhile, small cars also tend to cost less in terms of tax.

As well as smaller new cars, used cars are also growing in popularity. As companies like VCARS sell used cars at great prices, the temptation for motorists who don’t mind buying second-hand is great to say the least. You could get a car that has everything you could ask for – great fuel economy, plenty of space, comfort and equipment plus a smooth ride for a fraction of the price of a new model.

If the economy improves over the course of 2013, there’s a chance that more people will be buying new. However, any new models that are bought are likely to be more fuel-efficient. Hybrids and electric cars are likely to grow in popularity, especially if the price of petrol and diesel continues to increase at its current rate. However, with many drivers with their eyes on the pennies, they’re likely to continue to buy thriftily.

  • Advice on buying a sat-nav for a used car

Sat-navs really are a handy device that I think all drivers – regardless of their level of experience or the kind of car they own – should look to have. Although these products are now often built-in to new high-end vehicles, if you’re buying a slightly older second-hand, you may find you have to purchase one separately.

Even if you have been driving for many years, I can’t stress enough the importance of getting a good-quality sat-nav. After all, nobody wants to get lost while on the road – particularly when they’re driving to a destination for the first time or have an urgent appointment they cannot be late for – so the assistance such items provide will be vital.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that these devices can also help to make sure you’re in the right lane when approaching junctions, provide directions to amenities such as petrol stations and alert you to where speed cameras are located. Of course, the particular features that you can use will depend on the particular model you buy, so you should consider what you want from a device and which facilities you’re most likely to use on a regular basis before you make a purchase. With that in mind, here are some of the devices that I think are worth considering for drivers of all budgets and backgrounds.

    Garmin nuvi 2515

If you want an affordable sat-nav, the Garmin nuvi 2515 is certainly worth considering. Although it is not as expensive or feature-laden as some of other devices in the company’s range, it still has everything you need to help you reach your destination.

Featuring a 5-inch touchscreen and pre-loaded maps of the UK and Ireland, the gadget comes with Garmin’s trafficTrends technology, a service that calculates your route based on estimated traffic flow levels.

Other services include park position recall technology (a feature designed to help you locate where you parked your car) and built-in Bluetooth, which enables you to sync the sat-nav with your phone so you can make hands-free calls.

    TomTom Via 135

The TomTom Via 135 also allows hands-free calls to be made, while gadget-loving drivers may be interested in the fact it enables icons and text descriptions to be added to the destinations they drive to the most.

If you choose this device, you can get alerts to tell you when you’re approaching a speed camera, while the foldaway mount makes it easy to attach the sat-nav to your car’s windscreen.

    Navman Tourer

Finally, I think the Navman Tourer is a great choice of sat-nav for those who often take long trips, partially because it includes features such as 3D junction views and speed limit alerts.

It also comes with a Choice of Routes service that allows you to preview what the fastest, shortest, easiest and most economical directions for you to take are, before selecting the one that is right for you. Buy this sat-nav and you’ll not onlys access maps for roads in the UK, but you can also plan routes for dozens of European countries. France, Portugal and Germany are just three of the countries whose roads and motorways information are included on the device, so it’s perfect if you often take your car overseas.

Whether you own asecond-hand Nissanor some other car, I can’t stress enough how useful sat-navs are, but what are your experiences of using these devices? Please leave a comment and let us know!

  • The LA Motor Show: Best of the debuts

2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe Black SeriesAs the curtain drops on another year, the motoring industry will conclude the last 12 months with the final major motor show of the year which is being showcased in Los Angeles from November 30. Over 40 new cars will make their debuts from a whole range of manufacturers over the course of the 10 days the exhibition is open.

Based in the heart of the city at the LA Convention Centre, the motor show will see such cars as the Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series and BMW’s new i4 Concept being revealed. Low key cars will also make their public debuts and the following is a few of the best of what to expect from the LA Motor Show.

    Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series

The Stuttgart outfit has already wowed us this year with the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series which offers raw performance for the road through Mercedes’ 6.2 litre V8 and the addition of aero parts to make the car look positively ferocious. Now, the same treatment has been given to the brilliant SLS which boasts an increase in power of 59bhp, meaning it now produces 622bhp and an even more explicit exhaust note thanks to a change of materials from steel to titanium for the exhaust system itself.

    BMW i4 Concept

After already showcasing their i3 and i8 models, BMW will now reveal another in its electric line-up and is expected to be a compact sports coupe to fit between the i3’s city car and i8’s sports car credentials. The i4 could very well use the i3’s running gear and is expected to have just the two seats available in the cabin, whilst sticking to the hybrid mantra of its electric sister models and feature the same 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-charged hybrid system. Low fuel and emissions is key for the range and with the i8 having a proposed 78mpg, the i4 should be easily be able to match it, if not offer more.

    Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost

Targeted directly at the US market, Ford will put on display the new EcoBoost Fiesta in LA and show off its capabilities as a frugal petrol-powered vehicle. The Fiesta’s three-cylinder engine will emit just 114g/km of CO2, but offer 123bhp on tap and its weight saving under the bonnet should enable more than capable handling. When it goes on sale next year, the EcoBoost Fiesta will be the only three-cylinder car available in the States as Ford look to challenge the hybrid market with a petrol-powered car that can achieve around 60mpg, but still offer fun driving dynamics, as well as helping those in Europe too who look to compare fuel cards.

    Volvo S60 Polestar Concept

Another exciting LA Motor Show debut is Volvo’s new Polestar model, the S60, which follows on from the C30 Polestar Concept that excited many a motoring journalist with its manic capabilities. The S60 Polestar features a 3.0-litre straight-six offering a massive 508bhp; over 200bhp up from the standard S60. That’s enough to get the four-door saloon from 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds. A widened chassis, uprated brakes and a four-wheel drive system all make the car a very intruiging prospect indeed.

About the author: Sam Bisby writes for UK Fuels who offer fuel card solutions for those looking for a great deal when comparing fuel cards.

  • New Mini Paceman unveiled

2013 MINI PacemanIt won’t be long before the seventh model in the Mini range goes on sale in the UK, though it’s difficult to know what the British market will make of it. Essentially the new car, called the “Paceman”, is a Mini Countryman with three doors which Mini hopes to market as a “Sports Activity Vehicle”.

Unfortunately the Paceman isn’t all that sporty when compared to many of the larger sports utility vehicles, and it’s hard to say whether drivers will be willing to show it off, even if it is the first “Sports Activity Coupé in the premium small and compact segment”.

That’s not to say that the Paceman doesn’t look good though – inside especially it’s not dissimilar to the Countryman with its large (though not particularly garish) speedo; complete with sat nav, fuel gauge and audio. The rev counter is much more difficult to see, tucked away as it is behind the steering wheel. There’s plenty of information on show if you do crane your neck over the wheel to notice, with an odometer and a gauge for fuel economy on display.

The fuel economy is likely to be one of the major selling points for the Paceman, as it ranges from a very reasonable 46.3 mpg in the standard Cooper S, to a not too shabby 64.2 mpg in the smaller capacity diesel variant.

Sadly the Paceman needs to be cheap to run, costing as it does £18,970 for the most basic version. Road tax is not exactly inexpensive, and cheap car insurance from 123 for Irish customers are among the best available; with reasonable quotes in the UK often hard to come by.

The Paceman looks set to be somewhat rare though due to the extremely niche nature of its audience, so proper protection is absolutely essential. The good news for Mini drivers is that it’s a relatively safe vehicle, with the four wheel drive version handling particularly well even for a small car.

  • Hyundai Elantra 2013

2013 Hyundai ElantraThe 2013 Hyundai Elantra boasts an engine that weighs much less than its predecessor’s and an automatic transmission that makes the car feel light as a feather. The new and improved transmission in the Hyundai Elantra gives the driver a smoother ride and more efficient use of gas. This model also boasts a D-CVVT that lessens the car’s emissions.

There are several safety features built into this car, including a traction control system, brake assist, a management system that guarantees the car’s stability, side impact beams on both passenger doors, an excellent anti-lock system for the brakes, electronic stability control and brake-force distribution as well as six airbags.

The Elantra’s traction control system makes the car’s acceleration more stable than it would be otherwise. This means the car is easier to safely control in inclement weather. The brake assist feature can sense when the driver is hitting the break in an emergency and it will allow the car to stop as quickly as possible. Vehicle Stability Management System makes all the car’s safety features work as well as they possible can. It helps the various safety features work together to provide a safe driving experience. The side-impact beams protect the car’s passengers in the event another vehicle slams into the passenger doors. The anti-lock brake system helps the driver control the car better and makes it less likely the wheels will be locked when the brakes are hit quickly.

The electronic stability control is a feature that cuts down on accidents and deaths. According to the NHTSA cars that have an ESC crash 35% less often than cars that do not have it. It also cuts down on fatalities by 30%. This feature assists the driver in turning safely by ensuring that the correct force is used to brake for the turn.

The Hyundai Elantra 2013 is a sleek, classy looking car. One unique feature is that unlocking this car is easier than ever. With what is known as a proximity key, the driver can simply push a button located on the driver’s side door handle and the door will unlock right away. This is a great feature when the driver has their hands full or has young children or an elderly person they want to get into the car quickly.

The Elantra Limited boasts side mirrors that include an indicator to let other drivers know when the turn signal is on. It also comes with a sunroof that is easy to open and close and even has a shade to cover the sunroof. The wheels on the Elantra Limited have seven spokes and are 17 inches, making it easier for the tires to grip the road tightly.

Classified as a midsized car, the Hyundai Elantra boasts more leg room than other cars made in the same year. There is 14.8 cubic feet of space in the car that makes it ideal for weekend road trips. The interior of this car was designed to reduce the harshness, noise and vibration that comes with driving long distances or over rough terrain.

For the gadget lover, this Elantra includes a place to plug in an iPod or other USB device. The Elantra Limited also boasts a navigation screen as well as Bluetooth technology. It also includes a camera that gives the driver a view of what is directly behind the car. This assists the driver in backing up safely as well as parking. The Limited also boasts heated seats in both the front and back of the car.
