  • BMW ///M Performance TwinPower Turbo Engine Six-Cylinder Diesel – N57S

BMW has recently announced their new Diesel M Performance Division powered by the all-new N57S tri-turbocharged engine. This is the most powerful diesel ever fitted in BMW models. It showcases the commitment of the manufacturer to the pment of ultra-sporty yet impressively efficient diesel power units.

The new N57S features a lot of innovative technologies. It is the first engine adopting tri-turbocharging, latest common rail injection system with maximum pressure of 2200 bars and red line at 5400RPM making it also the most revving diesel in the world. The result is the incredible 381PS (280 kW) and 740Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque at just 2000RPM. 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) – electronically limited. In terms of efficiency, the N57S is astonishing – 6.3 liters per 100 km with emission of just 165 g/km CO2.

The new N57S needs a perfect gearbox – ZF 8-speed automatic transmission sending all that torque to the world’s most intelligent xDrive AWD system.

The 2 993 cc engine achieves an incredible output of 127.3HP (93.6 kW) per litre of displacement.

The tri-turbocharging system comprises two relatively small turbochargers and one large turbo, which join forces precisely to deliver the amount of power required. This reduces the turbo-lag to minimum and gives sensational power at high revs.

  • ZF 9-speed automatic gearbox

BMW have been already put on sale some vehicle with ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox, which offers superb driving dynamics as well as nice low fuel consumption. Now, the famous company has introduced the world’s first 9-speed automatic gearbox.

9HP will offer up to 16 percent better fuel efficiency compared to the current 6-speed gearboxes. However, it will be able to work with engine start/stop systems as well as hybrid powertrains and all-wheel drive vehicles.

A minus for the 9HP is the low torque outputs that range from 280(206 lb-ft) to 480 Nm(354 lb-ft), which means that it won’t be suitable for diesel power plants. Still, petrol engines will benefit a lot from the new 9-speed automatic gearbox.

Finally, thanks to its open software and interface structure as well as the powerful electronic control unit, it will be possible to integrate the unit flexibly in different vehicle concepts. This diversity of the 9HP construction kit makes the transmission especially efficient for OEMs.

  • BMW Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo achieves 107 HP per litre from a diesel engine

The first sport-diesel model – D3 from 2006 was delivering 200hp and over 850 units sold since its inception. The small displacement and high effectiveness make this engine extraordinary good according to fuel consumption and low emissions. Now to continue the tradition Alpina introduced a new even more powerful version of the power unit.

D3 Bi-Turbo is powered by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder bi-turbo engine developing 215 hp and 450 Nm from 2000 rpm.  Really, an amazing achievement for diesel power unit. With its characteristics the small Bi-Turbo diesel is operating like V8 or a large-displacement six-cylinder one. (more…)
