  • Driver Travis Pastrana sets a new record with a fine-tuned 2020 Subaru WRX STI

2021 Subaru WRX STISubaru Motors USA driver Travis Pastrana managed to set a new record of 5 minutes and 28.67 seconds at Sunday’s 2021 Mt. Washington Hillclimb on the way to the overall victory at the wheel of the Airslayer STI, the monstrous 862-hp Gymkhana 2020 Subaru WRX STI. This new record is better than the previous with a total of 16 seconds, set back in 2017.

New record in the books! said Pastrana after his winning run, This car is the perfect machine to do it. Coming off a second-place finish at Goodwood I really wanted to set a new record here to show what the car could do in the right environment. Luckily we really had good weather this year and I knew if I could get a clean run-in, I’d have a great shot at the 5:44 time. So much fun and I can’t wait to do it again next time!

The Mt. Washington Hillclimb event is held every three years and is one of the most demanding motorsport events in the US and the oldest one in North America. In addition to its history, the tallest mountain on the East Coast usually brings unpredictable weather and mixed-surface road,  which forces drivers to contend with grip levels that shift suddenly and unexpectedly.

What is special about the winning car, is the exclusive aero package, which provides significant downforce, suspension upgrades, and the replacement of different components with their ultra-light prototypes. The Airslayer STI will be on display at September’s Wicked Big Meet as the next stop on the Airslayer Global Takeover tour.

  • Subaru WRX STI by Bilstein races through all corners better than before

Subaru WRX STI by Bilstein side viewIt is well known that Subaru WRX STI is one of the performance road-legal masters of our time. Being an automotive icon (literally) it has been featured on many racing games so that any one could drive it, although virtually. Those who are lucky to have driven it say that on a real country road, the WRX STI is behaving even more fun than in the virtual world or on the real streets. Fitted with the obligatory all-wheel drive and the powerful turbo boxer engine, the car almost seams unbeatable.

However, the team at Bilstein found ways to improve further the racy car by making simple changes. The decision made was to add the OE series of the in-house made gas-pressure shock absorbers. As the professionals say, they have a substantial influence on the handling of the car.

SEE ALSO: Bilstein Builds Captain America’s Car Based on Fiat 500 Cinquone

What is more, the suspension specialists from Germany have also shown that things can be a little bit sportier. As an upgrade or as a substitution of worn shock absorbers, the BILSTEIN B6 gas-pressure shock absorber is the perfect choice. Many who have tried it say that it is “better than original”. The reason – it is delivering more damping force, thus enhancing the performance, comfort and durability. And this happens even on poor road conditions and with heavy loads.

For those keen on being closer to the ground, the WRX STI could be equipped with Bilsetin’s B8 gas-pressure shock absorbers added to the in-house made lowering springs. By the way, the secret behind these shock absorbers is that they have been specially shortened with a main focus on a harmonious overall package. This also improves handling.

The last two options are for those who really love racing unstoppably. Precisely, the B12 Pro-Kit complete suspension features tuned springs and shock absorbers, while the B16 coilover suspension provides full adjustable lowering from 15 to 25 millimetres and a ten-fold adjustment option for bump and rebound stage.

On a Monday mornings coilovers and suspension seem a reasonable topic to discuss.

  • Revolutionary Subaru WRX STI Rallycross Car Debuts in NY

Subaru WRX STI Rallycross Car Side ViewSubaru is going to premiere its WRX STI rallycross car at the New York Auto Show tomorrow after a year of secret development. The rally team will compete with this car in the Red Bull Global and X Games Rallycross. Besides its sporting name, this vehicle is actually dubbed VT15x and is based on the popular STI. The technicians at Subaru joined forces for its development with Vermont SportsCar and have finished the racer in four long years. So the expectations on this car are very, very high.

As the technicians even say, this VT15x is not only an evolution of Subaru’s STI, but a revolution in terms of technology and development. Carrying Bucky Lasek’s livery, the model is powered by the 2.0L Boxer engine which produces 580 hp (426 kW) and is mated to a six-speed SADEV sequential gearbox that drives all four wheels. Believe it or not, this car is capable of 0-60 mph acceleration time in just 2 seconds.

Other spectacular features are the specific rallycross widebody and the racing wheels delivered by METHOD. When compared to the previous generation mode which was driven last year, this one is definitely better.

First of all it has optimized weight. Then, its center of gravity is balanced, while the suspension geometry improved. Handling was also made better thanks to the advanced aerodynamics. And all changes meet the GRC and FIA Rallycross homologation standards.

Subaru Rally Team USA will start competing in this year’s season on 31st of May in the Red Bull Global Rallycross that takes place in Florida, and then on 5th of June it will opt for the first place in the X Games in Texas.

“It was quite a lap we did today and I am really happy to have another record in the bank. The chassis on this new car is so much better it really allowed me to pick up time in each sector in the more technical parts of the course. I lost time on the second part of the track, overshooting my braking point at Sign Post corner. I actually hand-braked the turn in the end, so I feel we can definitely do better.”, said Higgins.
