  • Volvo Concept Coupe Shows The Future Design Language Of The Brand

Volvo-Concept-Coupe-tHUMBVolvo Concept Coupe was inspired by the modern and extremely progressive Scandinavian lifestyle and design. Of course, the concept includes iconic elements for the brand, but it is the first of a series of three concept cars that reveal the design possibilities created by the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA).

The design of the vehicle is made by Thomas Ingenlath, who is the new Senior Vice President of Design. Through it, he aims to give an idea of the next generation of Volvo models, starting with the forthcoming XC90 in 2014.

When one looks at the concept it immediately creates on them a powerful visual impact, thanks to the new proportions and athletic stance. In addition, the distance between the dashboard and the front axle is extended and the greenhouse has been moved rearwards.

Other new design cues are the new lower hood, roof, and 21-inch five-spoke wheels. A beltline that spans an elegant bow along the whole car additionally highlights the sporty visual characteristics of the car. Entirely new are the topography on the hood and the ‘floating’ grille, flanked by headlights featuring new T-shaped daytime running lights guides.

As a matter of fact, the Volvo Concept Coupé includes design elements which refer back to 1960 Volvo P1800. For the concept, the designer has used elements inspired from the P1800 exterior and interior. For instance, a highlight in the interior is the sparkling crystal gear-leaver which perfectly complements the blue-grey exterior.

Throughout the interior is also visible a leather instrument panel, inlays made of naturally aged wood and the dark blue woven carpets as well as beautifully machined metal details. Furthermore, a large portrait touch-screen is an embodiment of Volvo Cars’ human-centric user experience.

The new Volvo Concept is powered by gasoline plug-in hybrid system. It is the most powerful version in the new four-cylinder Drive-E engine family. The concept vehicle includes a two-liter high-performance Drive-E gasoline engine with a supercharger and turbo. On the other hand, the petrol engine is matched to the electric motor on the rear axle. Volvo Concept Coupé delivers a total output of around 400 hp (294 kW) and over 596 Nm (440 lb.-ft.) of torque.

  • Volvo Autonomous Parking Concept [VIDEO]

Volvo-Autonomous-Parking-Concept-THUMBVolvo has developed a revolutionary concept for autonomous parking. Volvo Autonomous Parking Concept Car is going to be officially showcased at a media event this week. It has the capabilities of finding a vacant parking space by itself, without the driver inside.

In addition, the smart and driverless Volvo interacts safely with other cars and pedestrians in the car park. The concept utilizes Vehicle 2 Infrastructure technology, which transmitters in the road infrastructure and delivers information to the driver when the service is available. On the other hand the driver uses a mobile phone application to activate the Autonomous Parking.

Furthermore, the car is equipped with special sensors which can locate a free parking space and then navigate the car to it. The procedure is reversed when the driver comes back to pick up the car.

In addition, the vehicle combines autonomous driving with detection and auto brake for other objects. This makes it possible for the car to interact safely with other cars and pedestrians in the car park. Speed and braking are changed accordingly, for smooth integration in the parking environment.

The autonomous parking and platooning technologies are still being developed. However, the innovative technology Volvo Autonomous Steering is going to be integrated in the next Volvo XC90, which will be revealed at the end of 2014.

  • Volvo develops smart charging concept for electric cars [VIDEO]

Volvo Car Corporation takes important part in the development of the new concept concerning electric cars. The main focus is on connectivity technology and also includes smart features for charging of electric vehicles.  Volvo is one of the partners in the research project ELVIIS which stands for Electric Vehicle Intelligent Infra Structure. This intelligent infra structure develops a smart on-board concept for controlling, measuring and paying for electricity when charging via any outlet. The ELVIIS project is a product of the collaboration of Volvo Car Corporation, Ericsson, the utility company Göteborg Energi and the Viktoria Institute. The goal of this creative project is to bring mobile connectivity to electric cars. More importantly, it aims to identify and remove barriers for using electrical vehicles in daily life.

To get into the details, first the driver chooses to charge the battery pack via any ordinary power outlet. Secondly, the outlet is identified via GPS. Next, the driver pre-sets timing and charging amount on the touch screen or remotely via a smart phone or tablet. With the help of a mobile network, the car communicates with the grid and sets the charging scheme in order to support optimal utilisation of the grid and most favourable energy price. Any unintended interruption of charging process is directly reported to the driver’s mobile phone. In addition to this, the system directs the cost for each charge to the car owner’s personal utility bill.

As an experimental car for the project, the partners used 2012 Volvo C30 Electric. It was equipped with an integrated 7-inch colour touch screen, which made possible the smooth charging concept available at the driver’s fingertip. Five Volvo C30 Electric cars will further be used for testing and evaluating the technology during a year. Moreover, the concept is developed on a generic communication platform with the aim to make the technology globally applicable. At last, important fact is that the ELVIIS technology is fully in line with Volvo Car Corporation’s development of Sensus technology. In this way the driver will undeniably feel totally in control and totally connected.
