  • Volkswagen ID.4 EV Drone Command Concept

    Volkswagen of America is collaborating with the Tennessee Valley Authority as the utility corporation sets a goal of operating a 100 percent electric sedan and SUV fleet by the year 2030. As one of its early steps, the utility provider has chosen to collaborate with Volkswagen on a year-long test using its ID.4 EV to analyze capabilities and various applications of electric vehicle usage.  As part of this test, Volkswagen has modified a 2023 ID.4 AWD Pro S as a “Mobile Drone Response Vehicle” to equip TVA test drivers for a number of real-world response scenarios.

    An eye-catching exterior graphics package was designed to boost visibility of the test fleet program. Featuring a trunk-housed custom storage unit for drone and field equipment, the vehicle is also outfitted with a portable power station. Versatility gets a boost by way of a Thule Caprock platform roof rack, supplemented with a Thule retractable side awning. Eighteen-inch wheels with H&R TRAK+ wheel spacers and 245/60R18 all-terrain tires unlock new roads for the SUV, while a heavy-duty suspension aids in hauling the weight of additional equipment. Roadside emergency lighting and side and rear-mounted floodlighting help responders when arriving on scene, while a full-display digital rearview mirror ensures optimal visibility for the vehicle’s operator. Additional Volkswagen Accessories on the concept include splash guards, a spare tire kit, dock & coat hanger, and Muddybuddy floor liners. The ID.4 EV Drone Command concept is shown with recovery boards and a fire extinguisher.

  • Volkswagen ID.4 reaches its turnaround point after an epic tour

    2021 Volkswagen ID.4Long-distance driver Rainer Zietlow and photographer Derek Collins have reached an impressive milestone on their cross-country road trip in the Volkswagen ID.4 EV as the team finished at their turnaround point in Los Angeles, CA.

    Two months ago, Zietlow and Collins took off from Herndon, VA with a mission to visit more than 600 Volkswagen Dealers in 48 states with Volkswagen’s first long-range EV for the U.S. market, the ID.4. When the duo reached the turnaround point in LA, they had driven 22,303 miles and visited 418 Volkswagen dealerships across 36 states. The pair also made time to stop by 6 Volkswagen Group of America offices to meet with employees and share stories of their adventure.

    Throughout the journey, Zietlow and Collins have taken the ID.4 through the bustling streets of New York City, the Midwest, Oregon and many other U.S. terrains. The team has documented their stops, at peculiar destinations such as vintage diners with neon signs and larger-than-life statues.

    Electrify America has been a massive support to the trip with 116 stops at Electrify America charging stations made by the time the turnaround point was reached. Electrify America has the nation’s largest open DC fast-charging network with more than 650 charging stations and more than 2,800 individual DC fast chargers. Electrify America expects to have more than 1,800 total charging stations with over 10,000 chargers in the United States and Canada by the end of 2025.

  • 2022 VW ID.4 earns a TOP SAFETY PICK PLUS award by the IIHS

    2022 Volkswagen ID.4Volkswagen of America, Inc. announces that the 2021 ID.4 has won the 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK PLUS award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

    To qualify for a 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, a vehicle must earn good ratings in each of the Institute’s six crashworthiness evaluations. It must also have good or acceptable headlights and available front crash prevention that earns advanced or superior ratings in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

    The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 EV managed to earn an acceptable rating for the standard LED headlights, a good rating for the available premium LED projector headlights, and good ratings in the six crashworthiness evaluations. The Front Assist system—standard on all ID.4 models—receives a superior rating for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and an advanced rating for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention.

    The ID.4 features standard IQ.DRIVE advanced driver assistance with hands-on semi-automated capability. On the highway, IQ.DRIVE features lane centering and a capacitive steering wheel to help make driving easier. Around town, IQ.DRIVE can alert you to surprise obstacles in front of you and keeps an eye around you to help make driving safer.

    With its full equipment package, the ID.4 comes with a front radar, front camera, two rear radars and eight ultrasound sensors to collect data from the surrounding area, enabling Travel Assist (semi-automated driving assistance), Front Assist (Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring), Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Stop & Go, Lane Assist (Lane Keeping System), and Emergency Assist (semi-automated vehicle assistance in a medical emergency). In addition to IQ.DRIVE, the ID.4 includes Dynamic Road Sign Display; Park Distance Control; and Light Assist (High Beam Control for headlights).

  • Volkswagen team takes home two prestigious awards and recognitions

    2021 Volkswagen ID.4Volkswagen team announces that the 2021 ID.4 SUV and the 2021 Ateon have received awards from this year’s Texas Auto Roundub, the annual spring driving event of the Texas Auto Writers Association media group. Hosted at the Texas Motor Speedway, the event allows journalists to experience and compare many vehicles from different vehicle manufacturers around the globe.

    For 2021, TAWA elevated the Green Vehicle of Texas category to major award status, given the growing popularity of electrified vehicle offerings. The award was won by Volkswagen’s all-new, all-electric ID.4 SUV. Named 2021 World Car of the Year, the ID.4 marks a new era for Volkswagen.

    It’s a great honor that ID.4 has been named the Green Vehicle of Texas, said Matthew Renna, Vice President E-mobility and Innovation, Volkswagen of America, Having organizations like Texas Auto Writers Association educate the public on our brand’s electric future – and EVs in general – is valuable to the transition to electrification.

    Also, 2021 Arteon won the award for Best Midsize Car. The advanced vehicle impressed the jury with its refined design concept and the rich standard equipment.

  • Euro NCAP awards VW ID.4 with the highest possible rating [VIDEO]

    2021 Vollkswagen ID.4The ID.4 managed to impress the jury of the Euro NCAP safety test. The vehicle received five stars and received top ratings in all criteria – for the protection of adult occupants, children, and vulnerable road users, along with the advanced assistance systems.

    The assessment is based on numerous factors, including frontal impact, lateral impact, and whiplash tests. Based on these crash examinations, and the evaluation of measures to ensure rescue and extrication are as advanced as possible and ID.4 scored the whopping 93% of the available points. The final score for child safety was measured at 89%.

    Along with the protection of occupants, Euro NCAP also examines how well the automatic safety systems work. One of the best things with the ID.4 is that all trim levels come with Lane Assist and Front Assist emergency braking. The vehicle also features a central airbag for the front seats, which greatly reduces the possibility of head contact between the driver and front passengers in the events of collision.

    Another interesting piece of technology in the list of standard features is the Car2X which allows the vehicle to exchange information about local hazards with other vehicles.

    As an optional extra, VW offers further assistance systems that can increase the comfort and pleasure of driving, as well as further improving the safety capabilities of the ID.4.

  • The all-electric VW ID.4 completes its cross-country tour

    2021 Volkswagen ID.4Volkswagen of America completed a drive across the US last week with the all-electric ID.4 EV. Starting in New York City in mid-March, the team has managed to cross the Stats and wrap up the tour in Sacramento, California in 18 days.

    The route included Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Cleveland, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Savannah, Orlando, New Orleans, Dallas, Austin, Marfa, El Paso, Tucson, Phoenix, Joshua Tree, LA, San Jose, San Francisco and Sacramento, among other cities. ID.4 was charged at 32 Electrify America charging stations, among a few other options like overnight charging at selected hotels.

    As it comes to the charging stations, Electrify America is the largest open DC fast-charging network with more than 560 stations and more than 2,400 DC fast charges.

    As it comes to the vehicle itself, the ID.4 is VW’s first all-electric SUV and offers some enhanced driving dynamics, spacious interior, and tons of infotainment systems. Offered in four trim levels, the vehicle also offers numerous possibilities for personalization. Later in 2021 there will also be an AWD version available.

  • Volkswagen ID.4 now part of the “Building an Electric Future” exhibit

    2021 Volkswagen ID.4Volkswagen team announces that the new 2021 ID.4 EV is now part of the “Building an Electric Future” exhibit at the Peterson Automotive Museum. The exhibit, which opened in November 2019, celebrates VW’s history, impactful moments and showcases some neat design ideas and technical advancements.

    Building an Electric Future’ gives a behind-the-scenes look at making the new age of electric and autonomous mobility happen, said Klaus Zyciora, Head of Design, Volkswagen Group. It shows varying perspectives from the point of view of the designer, the manufacturer, and the consumer.

    The exhibit is consistent of five rooms that showcase Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix, or MEB platform, various models which incorporate it and information about the building process. Through the incorporation of multimedia features in each room, visitors have the chance to visualize new changes faced by the automaker and explore what driving will look like in the future. The final room showcases the Volkswagen ID.4 and gives visitors an inside look of the brand’s first all-electric SUV.

    The ’Building an Electric Future’ exhibit is a prime example of the future of mobility through the eyes of the world’s largest automobile manufacturer, said Petersen Executive Director Terry L. Karges. We are proud to present this exhibit with Volkswagen and ignite a conversation about the impact of an electrified future. We hope it inspires museum guests to think critically about the cars of tomorrow and the challenges manufacturers are facing to design them.
