  • Volkswagen Mk 8 Golf GTI and Golf R come with an updated digital interior

2021 Volkswagen GTI InteriorMk 8 Golf GTI and Golf R come with an entirely new electronic designed, exclusively designed for this particular model in order to enable an advanced digital network of displays and controls within the cabin.

Driver and passengers enter the digital world once the Mk 8 doors are opened. The start button pulses in red until the engine is started and the VW Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster and infotainment system screens awake. Talking about the screens, the large 10.25-inch Cockpit Pro system integrates with the infotainment system in order to allow drivers to create a customized display of relevant information – vehicle status, driving data, phone info, driver assistance, and more.

Digitalization continues with the improvement of all the buttons across the cabin and the heads-up display projects onto the windshield relevant information and virtually floats in front of the driver.

The steering wheel has also received tons of upgrades and changes. It is fully capable of operating the Digital Cockpit and has touchpads for volume and audio selection. At the same time, the Travel Assist button engages the partially automated hands-on driving system and the capacitive sensors monitor in order to ensure that the driver has their hands on it. On the Golf R lineup, the R button takes the driver to the Driving Mode Selection where they can enable the selectable driving modes.

  • VW will make the new Golf R the most powerful in the lineup so far

2021 Volkswagen Golf RThe new 2022 Volkswagen Golf R will arrive later this year and will offer the best output in the Golf R to date with 315hp and 310 pound-feet of torque. In order to distribute this power more efficiently and get the maximum out of it, engineers have also included a revised 4Motion AWD system with rear-axle torque vectoring.

This new torque vectoring system uses a rear differential with two multi-plate clutches that can distribute up to 100 per cent of the rear torque to an individual rear wheel. This approach ensures that the distributed power is just enough to get the vehicle and drier out of the situation.

Also, for the first time ever, the 4Motion system has been connected to the Vehicle Dynamics Manager, a smart system that integrates the torque vectoring axle, the electronic differential locks and the cornering performance of the DCC adaptive damping system. The Vehicle Dynamics Manager monitors the vehicle’s behaviour on every corner and uses a combination of selected single-wheel braking.

The torque vectoring technology was also the key function of the new track-only “Drift” mode which changes the stability control parameter and the torque vectoring sends all available rear torque to the outside wheel.

  • The new Golf R – countdown to world premiere has started

    The new Volkswagen Golf R

More powerful, more dynamic, more efficient, more closely integrated, more digital. These are the characteristics of the new Golf R, the dynamic flagship of the eighth Golf generation. Another highlight of the new Golf R is the innovative all-wheel drive system featuring selective wheel torque control on the rear axle. The all-wheel drive system is controlled by a Vehicle Dynamics Manager that has been closely integrated with other running gear systems such the electronic front differential lock (XDS) and adaptive chassis control DCC. The new Golf R therefore offers optimum traction characteristics, neutral and precise handling, as well as maximum agility. The development goal was to achieve maximum driving pleasure at a previously unrivalled level. The corresponding drive output is generated by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged power plant in the most powerful version of the EA 888 engine series available for the new Golf. The high-tech, direct-injection engine is characterised by innovative solutions for individual details, such as integration of water-cooled exhaust gas routing to the turbocharger in the cylinder head or variable valve timing with dual camshaft adjustment.

A retrospective: it was an automotive sensation – the first Golf R322, introduced in 2002. With its 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine generating 177 kW (241 PS) it was the most powerful Golf that Volkswagen had built up to that point. It was also equipped with all-wheel drive and raced to 100 km/h in only 6.6 seconds. It sold three times as well as had been anticipated. From mid-2003, it was the world’s first Volkswagen available with a dual clutch gearbox (DSG). A technological benchmark in the compact class. In 2005, the second Golf R322 made its debut, and with 184 kW (250 PS)2 it was even more powerful and superior. Four years went by until the 2009 International Motor Show in Frankfurt: at this event, Volkswagen celebrated the world premiere of the successor on the basis of the sixth Golf generation, changing from a V6 naturally- aspirated engine to a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine (TSI)2 that was 21 percent more efficient. The R32 became the R and with it, the output of the third generation increased to 199 kW (270 PS)2. In September 2013, the fourth Golf R generation followed on the basis of the Golf 7, once again making its debut at the International Motor Show. With now 221 kW (300 PS)2, it broke through the magic threshold.

  • Why Volkswagen Golf R is the best car for power tuning and how Wetterauer Engineering proves that fact?

Wetterauer Engineering Volkswagen Golf R front viewVolkswagen Golf R is probably one of the most preferred vehicles to tune and power-uprate by performance enthusiasts. Therefore it is no surprise when we see it so regularly tuned by various brands which offer abundant and versatile customization packs. Today under the spotlight is the work of the professionals at the Wetterauer Engineering, which has did their best on the seventh generation VW Golf R.

Being at the top of the range, and supported by a turbocharged and a 4WD, the Golf R is a proud contributor of 300 hp (220 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of optimum torque. Although this might seem a remarkable figure for a compact car, it is also great starting point for chip tuning.

SEE ALSO: Is the family car Volkswagen Passat B8 ready to tackle any performance challenge?

Taking advantage of this are the engineers at Wetterauer, who have developed a multi-stage performance upgrade for the car, making it as they say “the most potent Golf ever”. The output increase had to be significant, so they did not carry it out simply with a software remapping.

Wetterauer Engineering Volkswagen Golf R rear view

Hence, the Wetterauer tuners created a three staged conversion specifically for this Volkswagen. The basic ECU software on Stage 1 helps the Golf R generate an impressive 340 hp (250 kW) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque, while the next stage is increasing these numbers to 380 hp (279 kW) and 470 Nm (347 lb-ft). It also includes a free-flow air filter. At last, the Stage 3 is making it possible for the car to make it to 400 hp (294 kW) and 510 Nm (376 lb-ft) of torque. This stage also requires hardware upgrades in the form of a free-flow sports air filter, larger diameter downpipe with sports catalyst, and a stainless steel exhaust system with four outlet pipes.

Besides the power tuning, the Golf R variant shown here also comes with updated suspension and wheel/tyre package that optimizes handling and grip, and offers a low and purposeful stance. The coliover suspension kit comes from KW (it is Varant 3 to be more precise) and it features fully adjustable bounce, rebound and ride height.

The wheels are sized 20-inches and are delivered by mbDESIGN LV1. They are fitted with 235/30R20 tyres. At last, but not least, SRS-Tec front wings with 25 mm wider wheel arches were installed.

  • Volkswagen Golf R is the safest car on wet roads

    VW-Golf-R_thumbVW-Golf-R_651

Drivers in the Northern Hemisphere of the world now face winter, which always brings months of road challenges that include fog, ice, snow and rain. Most people will keep on driving even in these conditions so having a safe car for challenging roads is essential if you want to get from point A to point B with no problems at all. This is especially true if you own a performance car too.

Choosing one such car is now a bit easier thanks to the efforts of the British automobile magazine Autocar. According to it, the safest wet road performance car is the Volkswagen Golf R. The result was achieved after extensive testing that included various other models such as the MINI Cooper, Audi RS4, Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, Range Rover Sport, Toyota GT86 and Nissan GT-R. The safety test included five separate challenges at a manufacturer test facility at MIRA Proving Ground. We should also say that the cars tested used tires chosen by the vehicle manufacturer.

All cars underwent tests that included control over stopping from highway speeds of 70 mph (113 km/h), stability when accelerating, braking on ice-like conditions at lower speeds, level of lateral grip when cornering and precision around a circuit.

VW’s four-wheel-drive Golf R, which costs GBP 31,970 and produces 296 bhp (300 HP/220 kW), performed the best across all five tests, with the rear-wheel-drive GBP 24,995, 197 bhp (200 HP/147 kW) Toyota GT86 the worst. Running the VW Golf R close was the GBP 88,400 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S with exception for the Lateral Grip tests where it’s rear-biased weight distribution unsettled its handling.

“Driving conditions can become hugely challenging very quickly for drivers of sportier and higher performance vehicles. It is very easy to get caught out,” explains Chas Hallett, editor-in-chief of Autocar. “Advanced electronics certainly aid the driver, and winter tyres will improve grip, but drivers still need to drive within their limits and abilities, not the cars.”

  • Volkswagen Golf R 400 Concept [video]

Volkswagen Golf R 400 Concept boasts a sensational soundtrack. It has been caught on video – starting and revving its powerful four-cylinder engine. The German manufacturer has exhibited the radical Golf R 400 Concept at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show.

The ultra-hot hatchback is powered by a 2.0 liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 400HP (294 kW) and 450Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque. The engine is connected to a 6-speed DSG transmission sending the power to 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph). The curb weight of the vehicle is just 1,420 kg (3,130 lbs).

There are also rumors about a production version with even more power as Heinz-Jakob Neusser said at the Vienna engine symposium in Austria – “The new Golf R 400 could make more than 400 horsepower“.

The uprated engine comes with a number of modifications including a newly developed turbocharger with a higher maximum charge pressure and reinforced crankcase. A water-cooled exhaust gas feed to the turbocharger integrated in the cylinder head helps to reduce full-load fuel consumption, while variable valve control with dual camshaft adjustment enhances the economy and performance.

  • 2015 Volkswagen Golf R – More Powerful and Efficient Than Ever

Volkswagen US has presented the 2015 Golf R, which is the most powerful Golf ever to be sold on the market. It has 34HP more than its predecessor, which was sold as a 2013 model. Despite the additional horsepower, the new R model is expected to be considerably more fuel-efficient.

2015 Volkswagen Golf R is powered by a 2.0 liter TSI four-cylinder direct-injected and turbocharged petrol engine – 290HP (213 kW) at 5,500RPM and 378Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque at just 1,800RPM. The additional power is thanks to a redesigned the cylinder head (together with exhaust valves, valve seats, and springs), pistons, high-pressure injection system, and turbocharger. The engine is connected to a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. The power is put on the road through the latest version of the 4MOTION system with a fifth-generation Haldex coupling. 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds (with manual gearbox) or 4.9 seconds (with DSG) and a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Other special features include a new sport suspension, the Progressive variable-ratio steering system, and a stability control system (“ESC Sport”) which can now be deactivated for track driving. There is also an optional DCC adaptive damping system.

The new Golf R is equipped with an extensive package of exclusive features – specially designed bumpers, side skirts, and 18” aluminum-alloy wheels, the Golf R can also be visually distinguished from the GTI by details such as standard Bi-Xenon headlights with newly designed LED DRLs (daytime running lights) and a quad exhaust system.

The interior features sport seats with leather seating surfaces, a leather-wrapped three-spoke sport steering wheel, ambient lighting, and R-specific instrumentation.

The most powerful and fuel-efficient Golf R will be launched in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2015.

  • US-Spec Volkswagen Golf R at NAIAS

2015-Volkswagen-Golf-R-mediumSo, the NAIAS draws near and so do the good news. In our case, the latest Volkswagen Golf R: it’s coming to the US market. There will be a preview at the show, but the actual sales won’t happen until 2015. What’s also interesting is that this US-spec R will be a tiny bit underpowered than its European counterpart.

Still, it will be the most powerful Golf on the market, brandishing 290 hp and 280 pound-feet of torque. The source of that power is a GTI-sourced TSI 2.0 engine. However, in order to make it meet the needs of the R, engineers had to tweak quite a few bits. the cylinder head (together with exhaust valves, valve seats, and springs), pistons, high-pressure injection system, and turbocharger have all been modified or completely redesigned. As a result, the latest flagship Golf will be the most powerful to date with 34 hp more than the previous 2013 model. Volkswagen also hail the TSI in it as one of the most powerful four-cylinder engines in the world (“one of the” being key here).

Mated to a manual six speed gear, it can propell the Golf R to 60 mph from a standstill in 5.3 seconds. Go for the DSG dual-clutch automatic and that number drops to 4.9 seconds. The same ratio is true for the combined fuel consumption. 33 mpg (manual) and 28 mpg (DSG).

The power transferred from the engine to the wheels goes through Volkswagen’s 4MOTION permanent all-wheel-drive system. Apparently not so permanent these days since a clever Haldex 5 coupling unit uses an electro-hydraulic oil pump to continuously alter the torque distribution. Under relatively light loads, the R can go all day with all the power going to the front wheels. When necessary, 100 percent of the torque can also be directed to the rear wheels. Flamboyant cornering should cause no sweats thanks to an XDS+ cross differential lock operates on both axles. The bravest of the brave can even completely switch off the electronic stability control, thus indulging in the car’s purest mode of driving.

An extra option that can come along with the R is the DCC dynamic chassis control – a state of the art software-operated system that has us confused with its many modes and settings. The gist of it, though, is the independent regulation of the damper rebound and compression on each wheel. The process is fast, adaptive and rather autonomous.

In terms of visuals, you will recognize a Golf R – granted you miss the R badges – by it’s lower stance (0.8 inches lower than any other regular golf and 0.2 inches lower than the GTI). The brake disks are also quite noticeable at a diameter of 13.4 inches at the front and 12.2-inches at the rear wheels. Distinctive body parts: the bumpers, side skirts, the rear diffuser, and two dual exhaust tips in chrome. The headlights (Bi-Xenon) get complemented by “U”-designed LED daytime running lights whatever that means. 18-inch “Cadiz” aluminum-alloy wheels shod with 225/40 tires complete the picture.

  • Volkswagen Golf R Celebrates World Premiere In Frankfurt

2014 Volkswagen Golf R is the most powerful Golf in the range and now it is ready to celebrate its world premiere at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The emblematic Volkswagen model has distinctive design cues which emphasize its sporty character.

The Golf R was especially developed to deliver dynamic performance. It is powered by a newly configured 296 horsepower (198 kW) TSI engine. This makes it with 30 horsepower more powerful; however it is 18 per cent more fuel-efficient than the previous engine.

The maximum torque here was enhanced by 22 pound feet to 380 Nm (280 lb-ft.). Thanks to its sporty characteristics the new model is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

In order to achieve these outputs, the engine went through a motorsports development. The power of the engine is transmitted to the road via a manual gearbox or a dual-clutch DSG® automatic transmission.

In addition, the new 4MOTION® all-wheel drive system is what will deliver optimal traction in any conditions of the track. Standard vehicle specifications include the variable-ratio “progressive” steering, Bi-Xenon headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tyres.

Furthermore, the car also includes revised styling which additionally emphasizes its sporty character. The design elements which are responsible for this are the distinctive air intakes, specially designed bumpers and side sills, and the dual-branch exhaust system with four chrome tailpipes.

Volkswagen Golf R will be launched on the market by the end of the year.
