  • Volvo V40 Cross Country Unveiled!

2013-Volvo-V40-Cross-Country-THUMB2013 Volvo V40 Cross Country brings the unique blend of capable ruggedness and expressive elegance in the premium C-segment. The new Volvo model mixes class-leading driving dynamics, interior convenience and a powerful stance, impressive fuel economy and pioneering safety technology.

Standard in this new model line-up is the Start/Stop function. Also standard is the Bluetooth hands-free communication and wireless music playing, plus City Safety auto-braking technology, pedestrian airbag and Pedestrian Detection technology.

In fact the V40 Cross Country is the third variant of the V40 family. It includes a number of unique details such as sleek silver roof rails, alloy wheels available up to 19-inch, contrasting front bumper, honeycomb mesh grille and upright day-running lights, sculpted, contrasting sills, contrasting rear bumper with integrated skid plate. In addition, the interior of this crossover is in contrast with the Raw Copper exterior via the stitching.

The D2 version of the V40 Cross Country has class-leading CO2 emissions of just 99 g/km. This is possible thanks to the unique 1.6-litre diesel engine which has 115 hp (85 kW) and 285 Nm (210 lb-ft) of torque. The D2 unit is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and start/stop function.

Furthermore, the other units featured in the line-up are the five-cylinder 2.0-litre D4 turbo-diesel and the 2.0-litre D3. The first one has been optimized and hence is now more fuel efficient. It generates 177 hp (130 kW) and has torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) across a wide rpm range.

This means that the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is possible in 7.9 seconds, when equipped with the automatic gearbox. The fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are 64 mpg (117 g/km) with a manual gearbox and 54 mpg (137 g/km) with the automatic.

The other engine produces 150 hp (110 kW) and has 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. Both turbo-diesels can be either matched to a six-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox.

Furthermore V40 Cross Country includes class-leading driving dynamics the standard All-Wheel-Drive on the T5 petrol turbo model. Its five-cylinder 2.5-litre T5 engine generates 254 hp (187 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. The model is available only with automatic transmission and has an acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h of 6.0 seconds. The fuel consumption here is 34 mpg.

Another engine option is in the T4 petrol model, namely the 1.6-litre GTDi engine. It generates 180 hp (132 kW) and has a maximum torque of 270 Nm (200 lb-ft). Its fuel consumption is 51 mpg, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 129 g/km.

Another unique feature here is the Hill Descent Control (only standard on the T5 AWD version). It controls the car’s speed automatically when driving down steep inclines. The V40 T5 AWD Cross Country also has a practical Hill Hold function which makes starting on a hill easier.

The T5 version comes with an automatic six-speed Geartronic gearbox only, while the T4 is available with the automatic six-speed Powershift transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. The Powershift operates as two parallel manual gearboxes with separate clutches. This system provides quick and fuel-saving gear changes.

Wide range of accessories is included as well. Some of them feature: Parcel Shelf Net that keeps smaller items secure and in order, Load Organiser that includes a load compartment divider, load belt and two floor rails, smart storage compartment below the armrest, two cup-holders and a 12V power outlet integrated in the console in front of the armrest.

Unique feature regarding the interior is the lighting, which is designed to give a “theatre lighting experience”. Here LED lamps are utilized in order to lighten up important areas. The occupants can enjoy a red-to-blue setting that adapts the light to the interior temperature, for example. They can also choose between another seven mood themes.

As an option, V40 Cross Country can also be equipped with a TFT digital instrument cluster. Here the driver can choose one of three modes – Elegance, Performance or Eco – depending on what information they prefer to see while driving.

  • Heico Sportiv Volvo V40 Green Racing

Heico-Volvo-V40-Green-Racing-thumbThe Volvo V40 is still pretty fresh. But Heico Sprotiv – sort of an official tuner house for Volvos – did make haste and came up with this: a bio-diesel sport edition V40. It’s a part of Heico’s initiative called “Green Racing” and thus it’s strictly for the track. But don’t despair as a followup project will give birth to a street version as well.

Heico have been personalizing Volvos for years now by providing accessories and parts. You can drive up to them with whichever of the mainstream Volvo engines and they will have an e.motion ECU upgrade for it. A range of sonorous exhaust systems, suspension and brake kits and Volution wheels are also available. The carbon fiber body kit here is pretty much identical to the one that will go on the road-going ones. At the very least, the diffusor will be the same. You won’t get the flaring wheel arches and we are not sure about that rear wing.

The V40’s D5, 2.0-liter 5-cylinder diesel engine has been remapped to produce 300 hp and a max torque of 600 Nm. The idea is to tackle a number of 2013 long-distance competition such as the the 24 Hour Race at the Nürburgring. Having a torquey fuel-sipper on the line always spells success at the end of the day.

Visitors at the Auto Mobil International (AMI) exhibition in Leipzig will have the privilege to be the Heico Volvo V40’s first spectators. The stand will be open from the 1st of June to around the 10th.

  • Volvo V40 Priced $31 501 in the UK

Volvo-V40-thumbThe Volvo V40 5-door hatchback which debuted last month at the Geneva Motor Show is ready for sale at a starting price of $31,501. It’s packed full of equipment and safety features one wouldn’t normally find on any other entry level car.

The basic trim line will be marked with an ES. But basic in Swedish terms is far what one would imagine – City Safety, pedestrian airbag, Bluetooth, high performance audio with 5″ colour display screen, ECC (Electronic Climate Control), 16″ Matres alloy wheels, DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control), power windows, a leather steering wheel and gear knob and textile floor mats. The SE (the next step) adds cruise control, keyless start, autofolding power door mirrors and a host of decorative luxories. There’s a LUX variation of the SE trim which sees the fitment of leather-faced upholstery, 17″ Mannan alloy wheels and LED day running lights as well as active bending xenon lights with a headlight cleaning system. All, be that ES, SE, SE Lux can come with a fully integrated satellite navigation system with voice activated control, a 7″ colour display screen and DVD player. Thus your Volvo V40 will be known as ES/SE/SE Lux Nav. It makes your head spin, we know.

The diesel D2 power plant in the V40 achieves an impressive figure of 78.5 mpg and spews out less than 100 g/km of CO2 emissions. Considering that we are talking about a 1.6 liter block that develops 115 hp, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, that is quite a feat. There is of course a Start/Stop function (here and everywhere else).

If it’s the most expensive model you’re after than better prepare a considerably more heafty sum of money. Let’s say $42, 705. For that you get the SE Lux Nav with a D4 177hp diesel engine unit. Not as economical as the D2, but still frugal enough and considerably more fun to drive.

Orders can already be placed, production starts sometime in May and delieries are expected to start in September this year.

The all-new 2012 Volvo V40 is available with a fixed panorama glass roof that stretches from the front windscreen to the backrest of the rear seats. What does the panorama roof is to improve the feeling of spaciousness inside the car. In addition, an electrically controlled fabric curtain is located under the roof and it opens from the rear. This means that the passengers can enjoy the light of the sun while the driver and front passenger are still shaded.

The interior of the Volvo is created with strong accent on ergonomics, comfort and an engaging driving experience. For instance, the wide instrument panel, together with the fluidity of the door design, creates a spacious, “large-car” feeling. For further comfort, electrical heating is available in both the front seats and the outer rear seats. The interior is offered in three main colour themes: Charcoal, Charcoal/Blond, or Espresso/Blond. Leather seats are also available in a new Azure Blue accent colour. Another highlight in the interior is the frameless interior rear-view mirror, inspired by modern smartphone design. Below the armrest is a storage compartment suitable for CDs and other small items. Two cup holders and a 12V power outlet are integrated in the console in front of the armrest. Furthermore, the glove compartment includes space for two soft-drinks cans or bottles that are kept cool with cold air from the Electronic Climate Control system. Furthermore, the interior lighting is created with the goal to give a “theatre lighting” feel. This was achieved thank to the LED lamps, which were used to light up strategic areas. The driver can enjoy a red-to-blue setting that adapts the light to the interior temperature – or choose between another seven mood themes.

    2012 Volvo V40

The V40 can be equipped with an “extra” floor in the load compartment. It makes the floor flat when the rear seat is folded. In addition, the front passenger seat can be folded forward to create even more space.

The new and highly technological Volvo Sensus infotainment system delivers driver-centric approach, which is enhanced by fully graphic instrument cluster that allows the driver to personalize instrument layout and the information provided. The fully graphic instrument cluster is an active TFT (Thin Film Transistor) crystal display that brings the interaction between car and driver into a new dimension.

The V40 has the most advanced audio unit: class D digital 5x130W amplifier, Dolby Digital in combination with Dolby Pro Logic II Surround, the latest MultEQ from Audyssey Laboratories and 10 loudspeakers.

Another innovation is the mobile application which allows the driver to stay in touch with the parked car via a smart phone. The mobile application is designed to offer the owner an intuitive, easy-to-use relationship with the car from a distance. It includes a number of features: Car locator – the location of the car is shown on a map; there is also a digital compass that points the driver in the right direction; Remote door lock – the status of all doors and windows is displayed – and the driver can lock and unlock the car with a push on the touch screen; Vehicle dashboard – this feature gives the driver access to a wide range of information: fuel level, remaining range to empty tank, average fuel consumption, average speed, odometer reading and trip meter reading; Car check – the mobile app performs a “health” check of the car; displaying information about lights, brake fluid level, coolant level, oil level and oil pressure; Driving journal – detailed data of each trip during the last 40 days can be downloaded and stored; it is also possible to extract the data as an Excel file – a perfect feature for company car owners; Vehicle information – basic car data such as model, registration number and VIN number are stored and can be displayed; Theft notification – if the car alarm is triggered, the driver is alerted via the mobile app.

The chassis of the V40 has been designed to offer the agile, connected experience that creates driving pleasure. The engine CO2 emissions begin at just 94 g/km to the turbocharged T5 petrol engine with 254 hp (187 kW) and acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in 6.7 seconds. All engine versions have start-stop and braking energy regeneration, no matter whether they are fitted with a manual or automatic gearbox.

The all-new 2012 Volvo V40 has two different chassis setups: the Dynamic chassis which comes as a standard and the Sport chassis, which is lowered 10 mm compared with the Dynamic chassis. The steering column’s thick tubing and stiff insulator increase torsional rigidity. This also contributes to the enhanced feeling of direct contact with the wheels and the road. Optional on the V40 is the Electrical Power Assist Steering (EPAS) which uses an electrical motor to support the steering rack. The Electrical Power Assist Steering enables integration of safety and driver support functions that involve the steering, such as Lane Keeping Aid and Park Assist Pilot. Furthermore, the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) system includes several sophisticated features that offer a unique blend of driving pleasure and safety. Advanced Stability Control uses a roll angle sensor that makes it possible to identify any skidding tendency at a very early stage. On the other hand the Engine Drag Control prevents the wheels from locking during engine braking on a slippery surface. Additional innovative feature is the Corner Traction Control that uses torque vectoring so the car corners even more smoothly. The car’s inner driven wheel is braked, causing more power to be transmitted to the outer driven wheel. This allows the driver to corner more tightly while reducing any tendency to understeer.

To go even further into details, the engine range comprises of several diverse engine, The firs one is the five-cylinder 2.5-litre turbocharged T5 engine with power output of 254 hp (187 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. The T5 comes with automatic transmission and acceleration from 0-62 mph takes 6.7 seconds. Fuel consumption is 35.8 mpg (EU Combined). The mid-range offer includes two versions of a 1.6-litre GTDi engine: T4 with 180 horsepower (132 kW) and T3 with 150 horsepower (110 kW). The 180 hp engine offers maximum torque of 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) and the 150 horsepower T3 engine offers 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque. Volvo’s engine experts have managed to bring fuel consumption down to 48.7 mpg. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 134 g/km. Furthermore, the T5 version comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox, while the T4 is available in combination with the automatic six-speed Powershift transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. The T3 comes with a manual gearbox. What has to be highlighted here is that the five-cylinder 2.0-litre D4 turbodiesel has been optimized for fuel-efficient driving pleasure. This engine delivers 177 hp (130 kW) and has torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) across a wide rpm range. Acceleration from 0-62 mph takes 8.3 seconds with the automatic gearbox (8.6 sec with manual). Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions is 62.8 mpg (119 g/km) with a manual gearbox and 53.3 mpg (139 g/km) with the automatic (EU Combined). In addition there is the 2.0-litre D3 producing 150 hp (110 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. Both turbodiesels are available with a six-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox. The star of the low emissions is the D2 version of the Volvo V40, which comes with CO2 emissions as low as 94 g/km – corresponding to fuel consumption of just 78.8 mpg. The 1.6-litre diesel engine has 115 hp and 285 Nm of torque, including 15 Nm overboost. The D2 engine is combined with a six-speed manual gearbox and start/stop function. The 1.6-litre diesel engine can also be mated to the six-speed Powershift gearbox.

Volvo has added several new high-tech features to the safety and support systems such as Pedestrian Airbag Technology, Lane Keeping Aid with haptic auto steering, an ingenious Park Assist Pilot, automatic Road Sign Information, Active High Beam and a Cross Traffic Alert radar system at the rear. The groundbraking here is the Pedestrian Detection technology, which has full auto brake; and the further developed City Safety low-speed collision avoidance system which now operates at speeds up to 31 mph. In addition to all this, the new 2012 Volvo V40 also features world-class crash safety including a safety cage with effective deformation zones and various grades of high-strength steel. Safety belt pre-tensioners are standard in the front and outer rear seats and the front seats are equipped with whiplash protection (WHIPS) to help prevent neck injuries. Both the driver and front seat passenger seat have dual stage airbags. There are also side airbags integrated in the front seat backrests.

At last, the V40 is available with a Personal Car Communicator remote, which enables keyless drive. In addition to this the remote can also transmit and receive signals, thus providing the driver with locking and alarm information.

  • Efficient Volvo Revolution

Volvo-V40-Hatch-thumbIt would seem that Volvo is now turning to efficiency after mastering the art of safety. Preparing for the Geneva Motor Show, the company has innovated (also downsized) a great deal of its technological arsenal. Now, some of the economy figures coming from the Volvo C30, V60 Plug-in hybrid and even the latest Volvo V40 are stunning. The cars will still be safe though.

Within the Volvo fleet, overall four models will soon spew out less than 100 g/km of CO2. This spring the C30 will join the all-new V40 at 94 g/km. The other, D2 versions are the Volvo S40 and Volvo V50. They both have emissions of 99g/km. In addition, there are currently another four models with CO2 emissions below 120 g/km: the Volvo S60 (114 g/km), Volvo V60 (119 g/km), Volvo V70 (119 g/km) and Volvo S80 (119 g/km).

    Volvo C30 (2012)
    Volvo C30 (2012)

Later on this year Volvo will also start selling the V60 Plug-in hybrid that boasts a fuel economy of 1.9 liters/100km (49 g CO2 /km) when in Hybrid mode. Alternatively, it run on pure electricity for at least 50 km or it can utilize both engine and motor. That means a combination of power that measures up to 215+70 BHP and 440+200 Nm of torque.

“The V60 Plug-in Hybrid boosts our pole position in electrification. None of our competitors can offer customers an equally ingenious car. It elevates hybrid technology to an entirely new level,” says Stefan Jacoby. “It is the perfect choice for the uncompromising customer who wants minimum carbon dioxide emissions and maximum driving pleasure.”
“We have also established a strong partnership with Siemens in developing the next generation of pure electric cars after the Volvo C30 Electric,” continues Stefan Jacoby.

    Volvo V60 Plug-in hubrid
    Volvo V60 Plug-in hubrid

The most important car here however is the all-new V40 – Volvo’s first 5-door proper hatchback. It looks dynamic and from what we hear it is dynamic. With a D2 diesel setup, you only get 3.6 l/100 km and, as we said earlier, 94 g/km of CO2 emissions.

In 2013, Volvo is planning to launch a new 4 cylinder engine range that is based on a platform called VEA (Volvo Environmental Architecture). Both petrol and diesel engines will fall into that category and there will be something for everyone, assure us from Volvo.

“”It is time for the industry to stop counting cylinders. We will develop four-cylinder engines with higher performance than today’s six-cylinder units and lower fuel consumption than the current four-cylinder generation,” says Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development at Volvo Car Corporation.

  • Volvo V40 Premiere at 2012 Geneva Motor Show

Volvo-V40-Hatch-thumbGood news from Vovlo – the Swedish company that brings us everyday road safety and stability. At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show a new model will be revealed. Called the V40, it will be targeting a niche that goes under the category of “Premium hatchback”. What that basically means is that the V40 is expected to pock some big boy heat underneath a practical and sensible body.

When it comes to engine choice, one can go subtle and sensible. I am talking about Volvo’s first sub-100g/km CO2 diesel engine. Alternatively a turbocharged T5 unit will offer top of the range performance in terms of speed – 254hp good for a sprint from 0 to 60mph in a time of 6.7 seconds. Or anything in between will do just as fine No matter what engine and transmission, the cars will always carry a stop/start module and a brake energy recharging system.

Being Swedish, the V40 can’t roll out of the factory without ticking some safety technology features. The car is constantly aware of pedestrians and will automatically stop if it has to. The second line of pedestrian safety is the pedestrian airbag. A Lane Keeping Aid will keep you from veering in other people’s way while a City Safety low-speed collision detector will prevent bumps and crashes actually that occur within the 31mph range.

“The all-new V40 is the most intelligent and safe Volvo model so far. All its features are designed around the driver, helping him or her stay alert and well informed to avoid collisions and dangerous situations,” says Håkan Abrahamsson, Vehicle Line Director C Cars & V40 Vehicle Programme Manager. He adds: “With this class-leading safety package, including enhanced focus on pedestrian protection, the all-new V40 aims for a full star rating in the new, sharpened 2012 Euro NCAP safety tests.”

The company hopes to sell 90,000 V40 vehicles per year with as much as 85% of them going to the European markets. The debut is set for the Geneva Motor Show next week while sales are expected to start in May.
